hat is a Career?

A career includes all the roles you undertake throughout your life - education,

training, paid and unpaid work, family, volunteer work, leisure activities and more.

"Career" is usually associated with a single job. But, in today's world the term career is seen as

a continuous process of learning and development. Activities that contribute to a career can

include:

training

education

employment

work experience

community activities

volunteer work

leisure activities

You have already started on your career journey! Many of the skills and subjects you

learnt at school will be used in your work someday. And you may already have preferences

for certain types of subjects and skills (for example, science, business or art) which will

incline you towards certain types of work in the future.

To be a good life/career manager, you need to be engaged in learning throughout life.

Lifelong learning is now the norm and will be an important part of workplaces of the future. It is

critical for people to manage their life, learning, and work if they are to have a successful career

How to choose a career?

The first thing to consider when choosing your career is YOU. Your interests, strengths and

personality play a big part in determining which careers will provide you with the most personal

satisfaction. Making the best career choices involves:

knowing yourself - what you like (your interests), what you are good at (your skills and

abilities), what is important to you ( your values)

gathering information on the educational and job opportunities open to you

understanding the world of work

talking to people who are already working in the different areas to understand the nature

of their work

discussing it with friends, family and teachers

learning how to make informed decisions

taking action - Finding out about the employers that offer the types of jobs you are

interested in.

This guide will give you a basic understanding of the careers in different sectors and the

educational qualifications they need.

8 | P a g e

Careers in different sectors:

There are various sectors in which to pursue careers. Some of the common career

choices are:

Engineering

Health

Management

Finance

Defense

Administration

Public Sector Undertakings / Specialized Organizations

Banking

Agriculture

Pharmaceutical / Media / Vocational / Polytechnic / Fine Arts / Dance/ Music /

Social Work, etc

The following pages will give you an introduction to careers in each sector, the

educational qualifications needed for them and details of educational institutions in India, and in

Puducherry.

9 | P a g e

Educational Institutions - How to select an institute?

There are many educational institutes to choose from in every field of study. When you

are choosing an institute, keep in mind the following aspects:

Does the institute have approval from government regulatory bodies?

For example, a medical college must have approval of Medical Council of India (MCI);

an engineering college must have approval of AICTE, a dental college must have

approval of Dental Council of India (DCI). Other such regulatory councils are : Central

Council of Homoeopathy (CCH) ,Distance Education Council (DEC), Central Council of

Indian Medicine (CCIM), Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), Pharmacy Council of India

(PCI), Bar Council of India (BCI), Indian Nursing Council (INC), Council of Architecture ,

National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).

Does the college have the necessary infrastructure?

Infrastructure does not only mean a good looking building. Check whether the institute

has proper classroom, administrative building, workshop, computer labs, various

laboratories etc.

Does the college have necessary facilities?

Facilities provided by college assist you during your college period. This includes library,

internet, hostels, seminar halls, sports complex and dispensary.

Does the college have good placements?

This is the most important factor while deciding a college. Placements of a college

depend upon many factors like its infrastructure, faculty, facilities provided by college to

its students, college rank, past performance of the students in company. Look on past

placement record of college, branch wise, as well as company wise.

Since there are many colleges to choose from, some practical tips to gather information on institutes are:

Visit the college web site on Internet.

Consult your seniors.

Visit the college personally, if possible.

Take the help of your teachers.

Career in Agriculture

Agriculture is the process of producing

food by cultivation of certain plants. The study of

agriculture is called agricultural science. In India,

the majority of our population is engaged in

farming and related works. It is not only an

occupation but a way of life for many of them.

India's agriculture is composed of many crops,

with the foremost being rice and wheat. Indian

farmers also grow pulses, potatoes, sugarcane,

oilseeds, and such non-food items as cotton, tea,

coffee and rubber. A major issue with agriculture

in India is lack of skilled and technical persons in this field. This leads to lack of awareness

among the farmers about scientific best practices, leading to low yields and poverty among

farmers. Thus, there is an urgent need for trained people in the field of agriculture.

Agricultural science education trains people on the

Production techniques (e.g., irrigation management)

Improving agricultural productivity in terms of quantity and quality

Prevention and correction of adverse environmental effects (e.g., soil

degradation, waste management, bioremediation)

Traditional agricultural systems which feed most of the poorest people in the

world.

Career in Public Sector Undertakings

A government company in India is called a public sector undertaking (PSU). These

companies are owned by the union government of India, or one of the many state governments.

Some of them are:

Space Technology : o Indian Space Research Organisation

Nuclear Technology o Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL)

Oil and Energy Technology. o Indian Oil Corporation o NTPC Ltd. o Oil and Natural Gas Corporation

Others o Steel Authority of India Ltd. o Airports Authority of India o Pawan Hans Helicopters Ltd.

Life in a PSU : Most of these public sector companies require people with knowledge in certain branches of

engineering or sciences. Suppose you want to help launch satellites ( or maybe even travel to space!)

you will have to join Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). To join ISRO, you may need to get a

degree in Aeronautical Engineering and pass the competitive exam conducted by ISRO. Likewise, if you

want to work in a nuclear power plant, you will have to join Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL).

To do that, you may need to get advanced degrees in Physics and then pass selection exams conducted

by NPCIL. These are just examples for your understanding, please refer to the websites of the relevant

organizations which you want to join to plan your career.

banks. The scheduled banks are further classified into: nationalised banks; State Bank of India

job security, salaries and exciting career and growth opportunities offered by banks.

Eligibility :

Candidates must have completed their Graduation Degree from any recognized

university or institution. For detailed and up-to-date information on eligibility and application date

please refer to the following website : http://www.ibps.in/

Recruitment Procedure :

Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) conducts a Common Written

Examination (CWE) for the selection Officers and Clerks in Indian banks. IBPS CWE is now

mandatory for anyone who seeks an employment in 20 public sector and Regional Rural banks.

IBPS periodically accepts the exam applications from the candidates at their website, and the

exams are organized at various locations in the country in online mode. Apart from the

government banks, job opportunities are available in private sector banks for MBA graduates.

Vocational Careers and Training Institutes

A vocational course aims to prepare students for a specific profession, vocation or trade. These courses are tailor made and quite direct in their purpose which is to make students completely job-ready. The term 'vocational' means 'work-related'. So if you are pursuing a vocational course, it simply means that you are learning skills that will help you get and do a job. Vocational courses involve less of the traditional academic learning and more of hands-on training. Such courses focus on applying the skills learnt and are the ideal stepping stone from the world of education to a stable career.

Having a certificate from an independent body which states that you have the necessary skills to perform in a particular profession will always give you that extra edge when you are out in the job market. In short, vocational courses will improve your “employability”. Industrial Training Institute generally (known as ITI's) are those training institutes that provide training in engineering and non-engineering technical fields and are constituted under the Ministry of Labour, Government of India. These institutes were established to impart technical knowledge in various trades to the young boys and girls who have just passed their 10th standard and want to have some technical knowledge instead of going for conventional higher studies.

After the completion of ITI course, the candidate has to undergo practical training in his trade in an industry for a year or two which is mandatory to appear for National Council of Vocational Training (NCVT) Certificate. This certificate is compulsory for applying jobs in relevant categories in various reputed companies. There are both government funded and private (self-financing) ITI's in India. Most of ITI's impart training in technical trades like electrician, fitter, plumber, mechanic etc. which are evergreen courses. For a list of Industrial Training Institutes in Puducherry, please refer Annexure -1. Flow chart of vocational education system is given below :
