ARE YOU THE NEW TYPE B?DRIVEN, RESOURCEFUL, BRILLIANT, RELENTLESSPURSUE YOUR OPPORTUNITY @ BLOOMBERG.COM/CAREERS

Are you an active user of Foursquare or Gow-alla? Facebook Places? Other location-based social networks? Are your friends? Here are a few points to consider when imagining how these services intersect with your public impres-sion online.

Consider the potential positives and nega-tives of making location information publicly available. This creates opportunities or chal-

lenges for you based upon what others find in your profile or history. A few examples to con-sider:

A savvy employer might discover you while appearing as “checked in” at a networking event or career fair they are also attending. Are you comfortable with the other activity on your site? This has now become a primary part of your professional first impression!

You’re actively pursuing a number of oppor-

tunities, as you should. Are the conversations you’re having with recruiters consistent with the check-in activity that these people can see?

Your friend checks you into a location as a prank because he or she uses Facebook Places. Do you feel that others can discern fun from your real activities? Is it a type of humor that you’re interested in bringing to your future workplace?

Educate yourself about account privacy set-tings available to you and make conscious de-cisions about how you’d like to appear to fu-ture employers or others who might discover you on the web. One way to keep up with the latest options would be to find a technology news site (mashable.com or techcrunch.com would be two options) and search for “priva-cy” + “whatever service you’re curious about”. You could also set up a Google News alert (or comparable) for yourself if you want to stay in-formed as changes occur.

Keep up with ways you can make your first impression online a positive one. The video series at loic.tv, for example, provides an over-view of strategies you can use to expand your online presence and make a strong profession-al impact by sharing your interests. The Career Center also provides advice and resources on these topics. Check our events, the career guide, and our website for more information. Schedule an appointment with a counselor if you’d like to have a conversation on the topic.

September 21, 2010 Duke eRecruiting Resume Submission Deadline

by Dave Ranzenhofer ‘07

A career fair can be the first time you meet your interviewer or even your future boss. First impres-sions count, so make sure you start off on the right foot. It is important to look profes-sional for career fairs, so change out of your pajamas, sweatpants, gym clothes, sandals, and other college attire. For those of you hurrying over from Econometrics or rushing off to English Lit, suffering through an hour and fifteen minutes in your least comfortable clothes can be worth a rewarding job next year, and some students need to get used to dressing professionally before they start work-ing ten hours a day (don’t worry every-one won’t be working ten-hour days next year). Take a shower and comb your hair. Weekly shavers switch to Wednesday, at least for this week.

Recommended dress for a career fair is professional. While it is not mandatory to show up in a three-piece suit (and I have never seen anyone actually wearing a three-piece suit), an ironed shirt, dress pants, skirt,

blouse, even a blazer and tie is nice. These are very common and accept-able career fair clothes. You’ll even see some students dug out that suit their mom forced them to get but they’ve never worn or the skirt and blouse they’d never wear to Shooter’s. It is better to be overdressed than underdressed. Recruiters like to see that students are making an effort to be professional. While a suit will not win you a job, jeans and t-shirts will be a major turnoff. So, after you finish polishing off that resume, unzip your garment bag, head over to the dry cleaners, and make sure you dress to impress.
