Rescue Review

C.A.R.E.’s primary goal is to rescue as many animals as possible and place them into loving homes. On average, we rescue approximately 1,000 animals a year. In an effort to increase this number, C.A.R.E. has instituted some new adop-tion promotions to encourage Southwest Missouri families to rescue their next pet!

Pets for Vets: C.A.R.E. is offering free adoptions to veterans! The goal of the Vets for Pets program is to help heal the emotional wounds and stress incurred by military veterans. This is accomplished by pairing them with a specially selected shelter animal who matches their per-sonality and needs. They can then adopt the pet for free. This program, sponsored by Reliable Superstore and Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 621, covers adoption fees for veterans in the Spring-field MO are and surrounding communi-ties. Not only does a veteran get a new companion, but a shelter animal joins a new family!

Half off Dog Adoptions: Castaway Animal Rescue Effort is striving to place every dog we can in a loving home by

Christmas. This is why we are offering half off our normal adoption donation of $100 for dogs until Christmas Eve. We have many loving canines waiting for you to take them home and give them a Merry Christmas! All of our dogs are neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, de-wormed and health checked. Come by our adoption centers any time from 10am to 6pm to meet our adoptable dogs and learn more!

Freeline Fridays: C.A.R.E. is offering free cat adoptions on Fridays until Christ-mas. All of our felines are spayed and neutered, vaccinated, tested for FIV/Felv and dewormed. Our goal is to en-sure that families wanting to add a kitty to their home this fall and winter are able to adopt one who is already spayed or neutered.

The C.A.R.E. MISSION

To rescue as many adoptable animals from “death row” as we can properly care for.

To provide medical treatment to sick or injured stray animals.

To combine an aggressive spay/neuter program with a high volume adoption program while providing quality lifetime care for unadopted pets.

To network with and provide a rescue service for other shelters, ultimately reducing the kill-rate in Southwest Missouri.

Bobby Bones and 100.5 the Wolf Raise Money for C.A.R.E.

On Ocotober 4th, 100.5 The Wolf organized a free concert presenting The Rag-ing Idiots!, featuring Bobby Bones, Eddie, Cruz, and special guest Kelsea Ballerini. This concert took place in the Battlefield Mall, and while guests waited for the show to start there were raffle tickets and T-shirts for sale. Those who bought raffle tickets were eligible for the chance to win autographed guitars, signed by Florida Georgia Line, The Band Perry, Justin Moore, Randy Houser, even The Bob-by Bones Show! It was a great time, and we are so grateful for all the hard work put in by those at 100.5 The Wolf and the Bobby Bones Show for raising money for the animals!

C.A.R.E., Central High school Student Stephanie Bradshaw and the teachers of Eugene Field Elementary have organized a program that will not only benefit our shelter animals, but also help children learn to read! C.A.R.E. staff and volunteers brought specially selected dogs to Eugene Field Elementary so first grade children could practice reading to them. Every child who participated in the program got the opportunity to sit down and spend time with a shelter dog, while also working on their literary skills. The dogs loved a chance to spend time with the children, and enjoyed every minute of the attention!

2014 Putt For Paws Charity Golf Tournament The seventh annual “Putt for Paws” golf tourney was held on October 20th. This event, sponsored by the Mihlfeld family, was held at Highland Springs Country Club. Over 25 teams competed for several prizes, and after the tournament was over drinks, appetizers and food was served! C.A.R.E. would like to thank all those who helped organize this event! It was a beautiful day for golf, and for helping save more animals!

Thank you to all that came to this event! Your support is what

makes everything possible!

Macho is a 1.5 year old tabby up for adoption at our Springfield adoption center. He is an incredibly charismatic kitty, who makes friends with everyone he meets! Open up his cage, and he will gracefully leap onto your shoulder for cuddles. He loves to give kisses and rub your face. Macho is also very playful, and will eagerly play with a ball, string or another cat! He would be a fantastic addition to any family, and always keep things interesting around the house. Could you be the family he has been waiting for?

Barley is a 1.5 year old Great Swiss Mountain Dog mix. He is a calm and quiet dog, who prefers to observe his surroundings rather than jumping into the mix right away. He is very sweet and affectionate once he warms up to you, which takes almost no time at all! Barley loves to go on walks and would love a family of his own to spend quality time with. He will be a very loyal dog once someone takes him home. Come by and see this beautiful boy, you could be the one for him!

C.A.R.E. Ozark Adoption Center

Raleigh is a 10 year old American Eskimo dog. This older gentleman is looking for a nice family to spend his golden years with! Raleigh loves having his ears scratched and his soft coat brushed. He enjoys lounging around with a few toys, and laying in the sun. He gets along best other dogs who appreciate the laid back lifestyle he has embraced. He would be the perfect companion for an older dog or canine-friendly cat. Come to our Ozark adoption center to meet Raleigh, and see if you are the home he has been waiting for!

Daisy is a beautiful 2 year old domestic longhaired cat. She is very sweet and calm, perfect for a laid back household or a family who wants a cat to cuddle with. She enjoys looking out the window and snuggling up to the other kitties in our cat room. She also enjoys the occasional romp with a string or ball. Daisy is an extremely friendly cat who will walk up to politely ask for attention as soon as you walk in the door. Come by our Ozark adoption center to see her, and you could have Daisy greet you every day when you come home!

Updates From Adopters!

Below are facebook messages and photos from past adopters. All of the animals pictured were once on the euthanasia list at Animal Control, but thanks to your support, they have found loving homes instead!

“Thank you for our Mary Marshall!

We are in love!”-Rachel L.

“We adopted Sadie (previously Skittles) a little over a year ago from the Ozark location and she is the joy of our lives. This was the day she came home to us and you can see how she has grown and thrived. We love

this little girl so much!”-Holly J.

“Update on loki a.k.a. Thad he is spoiled rotten, he turned chloe (on the left) into a cuddling love bug. She mothers him daily, he opens doors wherever I go, follows me through the house and stands up to put his head in my hand to be petted. He really is

the king of mischief ”-Haylee P.

“Just ran across this guys adoption papers from March of 2009, when his name was “Todd”. I chose him because when I picked him up he hugged me and he still does any chance he gets. We re-named him Bender and he

has been so awesome”-Rachel W.

“We adopted Bandit (who used to be known as Juno) from your Ozark facility yesterday. We couldn’t be happier! He’s SO sweet, smart and well behaved, and gets along great with his new sister, Magic! Thank you for taking such good care of him while he was at

your shelter!”-Christie H.

“This was taken back in March. The first picture we got with our babies together (Millie, our little C.A.R.E rescue is the white one and Mol-ly, our personal rescue is our light brown/tan one). I love everything you guys do to help save animals and helping them find their forever families. We are extra appreciative of C.A.R.E because without you we would not have our oldest baby Millie and probably wouldn’t have ended up with our youngest baby (5 months later) Molly. Thank You so much for helping us make our little

family”-Love, Millie, Molly, Joe S.

1.) Build a Small Outdoor Shelter: This is a cheap, easy and fun way to majorly help the com-munity cats in your area. You can find simple instructions online or create your own. Building materials are cheap, and you can use scrap lumber, old dog houses, even plastic storage bins! This is a great project for a Youth Group or similar party. The shelter should be fairly small, as the cat’s body heat will be the source of warmth for the shelter. To insulate the shelter, try “wallpapering” the insides of the shelter with carpet scraps and Mylar, which will reflect the cat’s body heat back to it. If you can check it regularly, straw and paper shreds work well too, but must be changed whenever they are damp or dirty.

2.) Keep Food and Water From Freezing: Thick plastic bowls are better insulated than others, and can keep moist food or water from freezing for longer. If you have a shelter, place the food inside the shelter. Refrain from placing water bowls inside the shelter however, as they are easily spilled and can ruin the cat’s safe haven. You can also use a solar-powered water dishes or Styrofoam containers. More ideas are available at http://www.neighborhoodcats.org/

3.) Trap, Neuter, Release: While you may initially have concerns with TNR during the winter months because vets usually shave a femaie’s stomach for the surgery, it can actually be a beneficial time. The amount of pregnant cats is significantly lower (requiring less complicated surgery) and there is more time to neuter the entire colony before spring arrives, when the ma-jority of kittens are born. If you are going to TNR a cat or a few, make sure they have adequate

shelter as they heal. If you follow the steps in this article, they will be in good shape!

It is a common concern for many who live in the Ozarks: How can I help the community cats in my neighborhood survive the winter? The term “community cats” includes stray cats, abandoned pets and ferals. Many of these cats are resourceful and have adjusted to their life outside. However, as the temperatures continue to drop, these outdoor kitties could use a hand in staying warm and dry. Often there is no room in area shelters and rescues who are already full of cats who need homes, and many of the feral cats would

not be considered adoptable. So how can you help these cats when there is nowhere to take them?

C.A.R.E. Calendar Pet Contest Winner! For our 2015 Pet Calendar, we decided to do something new to include our supporters in the pro-cess of making our calendar. We allowed visitors to our website to vote for their favorite photo of the featured animals. Each vote was $1, and raised ad-ditional money for the animals before the calendars were even printed!

The winner of our contest was a little dog named Lucy. She is the beloved pup of one of our board member, Mary Crawford. Like many of the animals we rescue, Lucy was very sick when she was rescued. She had double pneumonia and it was a long road to recovery for this little girl. After recovering, she then waited months for the perfect home to come along. Luckily, Lucy was adopted by Mary and they have had a truly happy ending ever since! Mary takes Lucy with her to work almost every day, so she is never far away from her mom. Lucy loves playing with her dog friends, but can be a little frightened of kitties. She loves to sing to her mom and loves meeting new people. We love happy endings like this, and many more are featured in our 2015 Pet Calendar.

Here is Lucy and her mom, Mary. It is clear to

see how much they love eachother!
