FSOP Celebrating Milestones:

ALUMNI NEWSLETTER – STAYING CONNECTED

In 2004, eight years ago, the Pre-Pharmacy cohort wanted to be an organization – so they formed a club

and coined the name “The Remedies.” This was the beginning of the legacy. As it always does, time

passed. The pharmacy school and the faculty came into being. Many of the original “Remedies”

graduated and now proudly wear the title of Alumni of the Feik School of

Pharmacy.

We want to preserve the legacy and maintain contact – along the continuum –

throughout tenure at the FSOP and with our alumni. With this inaugural issue of the

“Cardinal Script,” the FSOP newsletter, your school reaches out to inform and

connect with you – our product, our capital, our representatives, our greatest asset –

our students and alumni.

Please allow us to hear from you as we continue to live vicariously with you and

through you. The newsletter, published quarterly, will bring news; upcoming

events; faculty, staff and student accomplishments and activities; and much more. I hope you enjoy the

newsletter!

Best personal regards,

Dr. J. DR. ARCELIA JOHNSON-FANNIN

FOUNDING DEAN, FEIK SCHOOL OF PHARMACY

P.S.

Please send us your news and stories!! They

may be submitted to [email protected].

Attention Alumni of the Feik School of Pharmacy,

My name is Chris Alvarado and I am the President of the UIW

FSOP Alumni Network. First of all, I’d like to welcome the class of

2012 to our network. The classes of 2010 and 2011 know how busy

you have been taking your exams, settling into a new job, spending

quality time with your family, and getting your loans in order. The

UIW FSOP Alumni Network is here to keep you informed about

events at the FSOP, and to share ideas concerning continuing

education, job openings and to help the current FSOP student body.

I have reached out to alumni and I’m very excited about the

abundance of support, both of time and money, for events to

support current FSOP students and to create events to socialize

with your colleagues. Our next social event will be a tailgate

party on October 20th

(Saturday at 4:00 p.m.) on the main

campus prior to the UIW football game. Cost of the event will

be $10. This will cover your food and beverages for the tailgate

party. $20 total will get you a ticket to the game and a red UIW

shirt including the tailgate party. Small children will be allowed into the tailgate party at no charge.

If you haven't joined the UIW alumni association (there is no charge to join), please do so. Any questions

contact me or Steve Hemphill (Asst. Director of Alumni Relations) at [email protected]. I would like

to keep the UIW FSOP Alumni connected. The alumni would like to hear about new and exciting things

in the lives of the FSOP Alumni, such as new family arrivals, weddings, etc. We would also like to know

if you need alumni to help you in any way, such as events, support, or prayers.

Thank you,

Chris Alvarado

SPRING 2012, VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1!

The University of the Incarnate Word Feik School of Pharmacy is pleased to announce publication of the

first completed edition of its electronic and print, open-sourced, peer reviewed and student-operated

journal, the UIW Pharmacy Review. The Pharmacy Review is the

nation’s first pharmacy school-based journal offering an avenue for

peer-reviewed publication for experts in their respective fields, while

providing students with the opportunity to learn the intricate processes

of editing and publishing a professional journal. It is anticipated that the

journal will be released in three editions per calendar year, with various

themes that encompass the changing landscape of the pedagogy and

practice of pharmacy. Future planned themes include

pharmacogenomics, the changes in healthcare education, and the impact

of national health insurance on the health professions.

The Pharmacy Review is currently welcoming peer reviewers, as well

as original article submissions for all future editions. The Pharmacy

Review seeks articles that are germane to healthcare policy, humanistic

experiences, and decision-making processes from healthcare professionals, students, or alumni. All

submissions can be completed using our online submission process. For more information, please visit:

www.uiwpharmacyreview.com.

PARTNERSHIP PROVIDING CONSUMER DRUG INFORMATION

The Feik School of Pharmacy, in partnership with Top200Rx, LLC,

unveiled the first medication information kiosk in the city on June 29,

2012 at the UIW Eye and Vision Care Clinic. The clinic is an

integral part of the UIW Rosenberg School of Optometry, and is one

of the largest eye clinics of its kind. Located in the San Antonio

Medical Center, it serves greater San Antonio and surrounding south

Texas communities.

The partnership was formed to address medication health literacy.

Top200Rx offers information about the top 200 written prescription

medications in the U.S., accessed through touch-screen kiosks. The

kiosks serve to augment the pharmacy and physician consult and

serve as a point of reference for consumers, caregivers, and family

members.

Under the direction of Dr. Tina Lopez, Drug Information Center

Director, the research and development stage of prescription

medication monographs provided a unique opportunity for advanced

pharmacy practice students. FSOP students have the opportunity to develop, monitor and update drug

information monographs for Top200Rx Medication Information Kiosks.

student age of 25. The class is comprised of 63% women

and 37% men. 68% of the students are first generation

Recent Events:

STUDY ABROAD CHINA! BUILDING INTERDISCIPLINARY PARTNERSHIPS AND

CULTURAL SENSITIVITY

A group of 30 students and five faculty members from the

UIW Feik School of Pharmacy and the UIW Ila Faye

Miller School of Nursing & Health Professions has

returned from a 14-day study abroad trip to China, May

15-29, 2012. Pharmacy faculty on the trip were Drs.

Rebecca Attridge, Russell Attridge, and David Maize.

The trip was the culmination of a unique spring elective

where students used blended learning techniques to

engage in a variety of activities that promoted interdisciplinary education and cultural competency.

The time spent in China was a rare opportunity to experience the country

first-hand and observe the similarities and differences between our

cultures, our healthcare practices, and our daily lives. Scheduled trips to

tour healthcare facilities provided opportunities to view the roles of

healthcare profess-

sionals in a different

society.

Drink at your own risk! RISK-BENEFIT ANALYSIS OF THE FSOP WATER FOUNTAINS

There seems to be something unusual about the water at the Feik School of Pharmacy. The collective

conviction is growing that a surprising correlation exists between consuming the FSOP water and

procreation! A high percentage of our professional family are or have recently been “in a family way.”

The Dean keeps thinking there must be a fund-raising opportunity to be found somewhere in this

phenomenon!

We thought you might enjoy sharing in the news about our expanding FSOP family:
