Textiles at CSAD is directed at the future of fashionapparel, interior design and surface decoration for thepaper and product industry. Whatever the medium, atextile designer will have a creative vision and thecommercial awareness to relate to a finished product,starting with a design concept and evolving throughcreative experimentation.

The primary specialism of the course is in print and stitch– one that is broad-based and experimental for body andspace. With core subjects of drawing, colour workshops,traditional studio design techniques and high-endCAD/CAM technologies, understanding materials anddigital media will lay the foundations for specialisations inboth hand-based and digital applications. In addition tothese, you will have the option to extend your skill set bytraining in any of the range of technologies from withinthe School, such as paper making, plaster moulding, lasercutting or woodwork.

You will learn about the prediction of trends and, throughparticipation in international trade and craft fairs or onlinewebsites, develop a working understanding of thecommercial and professional textiles industry. There willbe a number of opportunities for you to gain professionalplacements; indeed, you can even elect – in your finalyear – to replace your dissertation brief with a businessplan, paving the way for your career after graduation.

Our role, leading up to that point, is to develop your skills,curiosity, and intellectual awareness, as you identify youroriginal style and approach. Throughout your studies,there will be great emphasis on self-reflection, criticalanalysis and theory; all of which shall underpin more

vocational insight into business practice andentrepreneurship. You will have the opportunity to meetand learn from designers, makers and externalconsultants who contribute to the course, and whorepresent the diversity of professional pathways open to you.

Particularly in you first year, you will learn fromcollaborative work across the disciplines of the School,teaming up with students from other programmes toanswer a shared brief inspired by the city. Your secondyear presents an exciting opportunity to travel; to exploreall that another culture may teach you about textiles,through an Erasmus programme or a study visit toMorocco or Rajasthan.

In your final year, with the advice and support of theacademic team, you will exhibit the culmination of yourcreative practice; a body of work which represents theskills, concepts and technologies you have chosen topursue in finding your unique design approach andoriginal talent.

Graduating from the programme, you will be wellpositioned to progress in your chosen field – whether you wish to work as a designer in large organisations forthe fashion, paper design, or interior industries, set upyour own business, or pursue your studies at post-graduate level.

You will study three modules each year and, at the end ofeach year, you’ll have just one single formal assessment.You will be developing your work and improving itthroughout the year, following the example ofprofessional artists and designers; this is how they work,so it’s how we work too. We work closely with design companies, arts and makerorganizations, as well as the professional art and designcommunity. Almosteverything and anything we have available is for ourstudents to use, from digital stitch and plaster mouldingto our metal foundry and our rapid prototypingworkshops.

We are also home to the only MIT accredited FabLab in aUK university.

Your studies are built around three fundamental aspectsof what it is to be an artist, maker, or designer: uniqueskills; creative ideas; and an ability to contextualise thesein a professional situation.

These essential qualities – which are dependent uponone another – will form the basis for each of your briefsand assignments, throughout your three years at CSAD.They will be the markers of your progress towards being awell-rounded graduate; an individual who possess notonly the talent, but also the confidence, experience, andinsight, to thrive as a creative professional in today’sworld. Your core skills will be a consistent focus, as youexplore both new and established mediums and identifythose practices that you’d like to pursue further.

In terms of your ideas, your tutors will be encouragingyou to constantly reflect, question, and asses; to explorehow and why the world came to be as it is and how itmight be re-thought or re-imagined.

Contextualizing your skills and ideas is about gainingpractical and professional experience. You will have achoice of projects to undertake, where you willcollaborate with students from across the school’s otherdisciplines.

You will also have the chance to take up placements withan employer or voluntary organization. You may elect tojoin a research group or exhibit your work. You also havethe chance to travel and study in Europe, India, Korea,Australia, Morocco or America. You can even begin tobuild your own business or creative professional practice.
