    Afternoon tea is said to haveoriginated with one person;Anna, 7th Duchess of Bedford.In the early 1800's shelaunched the idea of having teain the late afternoon to bridgethe gap between luncheon anddinner, which in fashionablecircles might not be serveduntil 8 o'clock at night. Thisfashionable custom soonevolved into high tea amongthe working classes, where thislate afternoon repast becamethe main meal of the day.
