Carbon Nano Research Unit (CNRU)
Presented by:
Dr. Muataz Ali Atieh
Great interest has recently been developed in the area of nanostructures carbon materials. Carbon nanostructure materials are becoming of considerable commercial importance with interest growing rapidly over the decade or so since the discovery of buckminsterfullerene, carbon nanotubes, and carbon nanofibers . Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon nanofibers (CNFs) are among the most eminent materials in the first rank of revolution nanotechnology. The most eye-catching features of these structures are their electronic, mechanical, optical and chemical characteristics, which open a way to future applications. These properties can even be measured on single nanotubes and nanofiber. For commercial application, large quantities of purified carbon nanotubes are needed.
Carbon Nanotechnology Research Unit (CRU) was formed to provide engineering and scientific solutions using, experimental, analytical, and computational techniques necessary for dealing with problems involving , such as aerospace science, bioengineering, environmental, materials industry, petrochemical industry, medical and medicine science, electronic computer, security and safety, and science education. Emphasis will be on employment of engineering principles and environmentally friendly technologies/techniques to solve diverse environmental problems.
Carbon Nano Research Unit (CNRU)
The Objective of CNRU• To design, develop and fabricate a low cost
system that can produce high purity and high quality of Nanoscale Carbon Nanomaterials
• To control the morphology of the Carbon Nanomaterials
• To produce the Carbon Nanomaterials at specific chemical and physical properties
• To apply these Carbon Nanomaterials with specific chemical and physical properties and controlled dimensions in different fields.
Eight sub research groups have been formed they are
• Nanomaterials Research Group• Functionalization Research Group• Nanocomposite Research Group • Water Research Group• Thermophyical Research Group• Petrochemical Research Group• Bionanotechnology Research group• Simulation Research Group More than 15 high level academic staff and researchers are carrying
out cutting edge research under the Five sub groups in CNRU to achieve our goal in designating, fabrication, production and application of carbon nanomaterials.

Current and Future work of CNRU (outcomes)
CNRU has extensive research work in the area of nanotechnology, and specifically in synthesis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and
carbon nanofibers(CNFs). We designed and fabricated locally a Double
Stage Chemical Vapor Deposition Reactor (DS-CVD). Using this equipment CNRU has
produced different types of nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes, carbon
nanofibres, carbon nanoparticle etc.

• From the first results it has been observed that, the rate of bacterial removal with modified carbon nanotubes was high.
• It is a promising field for removal of micro organism from water
LABORATORY FACILITIES
Presently CNRU is using the facilities available in the department of chemical
engineering, chemistry, physics and earth science. Our CNRU Laboratory is still
developed.
