Michelangelo Merisi de Caravaggio, known for his startlingly naturalistic depiction of religious figures, amaster of chiaroscuro and an influential figure in Baroque art, heads the exhibition of Italian paintings with hismasterpiece “Narcissus at the Fountain” plus 12 other works of his followers. “Narcissus” is the last paintingof the second stage of the artist in which he depicts the beautiful youth in Greek mythology who fell in lovewith his reflection. The painting, which is part of the collection of the National Gallery of Ancient Art of theBarberini Palace in Rome, will be on exhibition at the Universal Building of the National Museum of Fine Artsuntil 27 November.
Enjoy.

Obini Bata - Pioneering All-Women Afro-Cuban Group
Twenty-five miles outside Havana along the coastal highway, the sleepy fishing village ofGuanabo sits beside perfect sandy beaches, warm water and ideal bodysurfing waves. Cows graze on the nearby hillside, and anyone foolish enough to be out in the heat sits under the shade of a tree. An old rickety locomotive hoots as it chugs along the bottom ofthe field, and boyish British architect and Coral Capital COO Stephen Purvis pointsexcitedly to the tracks. “The golf course will end near those tracks”, he says and then lookstowards the sea. …
Things are pretty tense around here. And it doesn’t help that Hurricane Irene is heading towards Port-au-Prince as I write this. When it’s threatening this close, we swing intoaction (see note 1). 2011 is a particularly harrowing hurricane season because we’veescaped major damage for 2 years running (toca madera/knock on wood). Like anunfaithful spouse who spends too many Saturdays ‘at the office’ or ‘runs errands’ at oddhours, you just know the luck is going to run out one of these days. But I digress...
While in Cuba this past July, I had the pleasure of seeing the all-female group, Obini Bata, perform at Havana’s Yoruba Cultural Association. Obini means “woman” in the Yorubalanguage of Nigeria, and Bata is the name given to the hourglass-shaped drums thataccompany Yoruba dance and song. The culture of Bata drumming originates withAfricans who were brought to Cuba as slaves. However, women have historically havebeen banned from playing the Bata. At some point, it was decided to sanctify the Batadrums for the purposes of playing them inAfro-Cuban religious ceremonies...

Festival Internacional de Coros
This International Digital Art Salon was held forthe first time in 1999 with the aim of offering “aspace to exhibit and reflect upon” a new form ofartistic creation which explores the potentialthat new technologies offer in creating art. Itbegan with the participation of some thirtyCuban artists, eventually becoming arendezvous of digital artists, designers andphotographers from dozens of countries, different ages and varied aesthetic views.
The 6th World Meeting of Casino and SalsaDancers and Dance Academies includesdance lessons, guest speeches, short coursesand choreography workshops, as well asperformances by the best bands in the country.
The International Video Art Festival promotesthis art in all its forms: video performance, video installation (video-sculpture and videoenvironment), video dance and animation.
It was in the Cathedral of Santiago de Cubawhere the first known choir pieces in the Islandwere composed by Havana-born composerEsteban Salas (1725-1803), who for years waschapel master. Honouring this tradition, in1961 Electo Silva, who has been for decadesdirector of Orfeón Santiago, organized the FirstChoir Festival. Throughout the years, choralgroups from different countries have alsoparticipated in the festival together with theirCuban counterparts, winners at prestigiousinternational competitions. An intensiveprogram of concerts in theatres, schools, factories, hospitals and public squarescharacterizes these days in which audiencescan enjoy the best of the repertoires of choralmusic.
