CARARE in a nutshell

• CARARE is a Best Practice Network funded under the ICT

PSP 2009 programme of the European Commission. It is

designed to involve the network of heritage organisations,

archaeological museums, research institutions and specialist

digital archives:

• in making the digital content that they hold available to Europeana,

the European Digital Library,

• establishing a sustainable aggregation service for archaeology and

architecture resources and

• enabling the integration of 3D and Virtual Reality content in

Europeana.

• 3 year project which started on 1st February 2010

CARARE work on 3D and Virtual Reality

• 3D is not yet a content type in Europeana, there is some

• CARARE is defining the functional requirements for Europeana to include 3D and

• Workflow for content providers – preparation of metadata, publication and delivery online for education, tourism and general public

• Supporting content providers in preparing their 3D content and metadata for harvesting

Page 10: CARARE: Connecting Archaeology and Architecture in Europeana

Issues:

• 3D models of heritage sites generate huge files

• Conversion for online publication

• Suitable formats including 3D PDF

• Resource discovery metadata for Europeana

• Relations between 3D and 2D objects

3D model prepared by Prof. Guidi, INDACO, Milan in cooperation with the Archaeological Superintendence

of Pompeii, Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa and ARCUS s.r.l. Fortuna Visiva di Pompeii project

Heritage places…

CARARE will contribute geo-referenced content to

Europeana

• Big opportunity to improve place-based searching and

• Add Map-based searching

Page 12: CARARE: Connecting Archaeology and Architecture in Europeana

CARARE: where are we?

• Year 1 = preparation

• Setting up aggregation services

• Reviewing and preparing the content

• Defining metadata

• Implementing the CARARE metadata mapping tool

• Building and testing the harvesting and aggregation systems

• Year 2 implementation

• getting content into Europeana

• Year 3 sustainability

• getting more content into Europeana

• Establishing a sustainable business model

Page 13: CARARE: Connecting Archaeology and Architecture in Europeana

Approach

• The content remains on our partners’ websites

• Content partners map their metadata to the CARARE schema

• CARARE transforms the metadata to Europeana’s format

using CARARE tools

• Metadata is ingested into the CARARE repository

• Europeana harvests the CARARE repository

Implementing OAI-PMH metadata harvesting

for sustainability and to enable updates

Europeana content - summer 2011

• CARARE want to maintains the rich semantics of heritage

data especially key information about time and place

• Content -> Europeana Danube release, 2011

• EDM metadata

• Semantically richer than current ESE schema

• Enhanced searches for time and place

• 3D will be added in the next release

Page 15: CARARE: Connecting Archaeology and Architecture in Europeana

CARARE as an aggregator

• Some of the partners are already national or regional aggregators,

some are setting up services to aggregate content for archaeology

and architecture in their countries

• Some are individual content providers setting up OAI-PMH for the first

time to enable harvesting by CARARE

• CARARE will make a contribution to the Europeana’s infrastructure

• Harvesting starts next year!

CARARE is a best practice network

which is open to new content providers
