Queen Blossom finished a distant sixth when last seen in the
G3 Irish National Stud EBF Blue Wind S. at Naas May 11.
AShe=s trained well coming into this,@ said Aimee Dollase,
assistant to trainer Graham
Motion. AShe=s had two good
works here [at Santa Anita]
and we=ll see what happens.
It=s a tough race, but she acts
like she=s worked well. She=s
been here a little over three
weeks, and we=ve got [Joel]
Rosario to ride.@
Sassy Little Lila (Artie Schiller) makes her graded stakes debut
after finishing a good second in Aqueduct=s Winter Memories S.
Nov. 25. She previously delivered in an optional claimer at this
1 1/4-mile distance at Belmont in late October.
Decked Out (Street Boss), just a head short when second in
the Del Mar Oaks, was freshened after a 12th-place finish in the
GI Rodeo Drive S. at Santa Anita Oct. 1. She was an impressive
winner of the GIII Providencia S. over this course in April.
Cara Rafaela cont. from p1
Cara Rafaela=s first foal was Ile de France (Storm Cat), who was
GISP for the Borges Torrealba family=s Stud TNT and eventually
produced GISW Love and Pride
(A.P. Indy). Her second foal, Bold
Legacy (Seattle Slow), was a $1.35-
million Keeneland July yearling.
Sheikh Mohammed purchased
Cara Rafaela privately in 2002
while she was carrying Bernardini,
who would go on to annex the
2006 GI Preakness S., GII Jim Dandy S., GI Travers S. and GI
Jockey Club Gold Cup before finishing second in the GI Breeders=
Cup Classic and eventually earning champion 3-year-old honors.

PEGASUS PLAYBOOK: CRUNCH TIMECourtesy Gulfstream Park
Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, a private racing stable owned by
Dean and Patti Reeves of Atlanta, GA., is one of a dozen
stakeholders in the $12-million GI Pegasus World Cup
Invitational, the world=s richest horse race to be run Saturday,
Jan. 28 at Gulfstream Park.
The Reeveses, who formed their stable in 2009 with trainer
Kathy Ritvo and campaigned 2013 GI Breeders= Cup Classic
winner Mucho Macho Man, are currently searching for a horse
to contest the 1 1/8-mile Pegasus.
Dean Reeves shares his thoughts on the process of acquiring a
participant for the Pegasus World Cup as well as participating in
this unique event.
It is now down to about five of us looking for horses for the
$12-million Pegasus World Cup Invitational, but there are still
some quality horses out there and I think you will see some
deals done over the next four or
five days. We have offers out
for some horses and I've had
some long conversations with
owners, so the ball is in their
court to see what they want to
do.
We've narrowed things down.
We've all got to make decisions
because time is of the essence.
The trainer and owner need to
know if they're going in this race
because now is the time they
have to focus and prepare the
horse, so there is a need for movement. I know some people
I've talked to want to make a decision by the weekend.
You know, when I first got into this, I thought this would give
me an opportunity to talk to other owners I wouldn't necessarily
talk to...to have a conversation with them. And it's been exactly
that. I have talked to owners all across the country, some
internationally, and it's been a great experience. Cont. p5

WITH ANDY BEYERFrom his writing to his railing against
drug trainers to his speed figures,
which revolutionized handicapping,
Andy Beyer's impact on the sport is
immeasurable. He is semi-retired
now, but he still has plenty to say
about racing. Beyer is this week's
guest on the Thoroughbred Daily News podcast. Click
here to listen, or subscribe in your Podcast app on
your iPhone or iPad.
Pegasus Playbook cont.
The owners I have talked to have just been very nice, very
business-like, about the whole process. The stakeholders have
all done a nice job. Nothing has been cutthroat. The main thing
is they really know their horse and they want what's best for the
horse. Sure, they want good deals--some different in terms--but
they also know where and when they want to run their horse.
I've really enjoyed the conversations and feel like wherever I go
in my travels, we'll talk more and this will open things up for
next year.
The other thing about this race is the fans will get their race if
it all unfolds like it looks like it will. They got their big race with
the two big horses, California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) and
Arrogate (Unbridled=s Song). Plus, there's some pretty nice
horses in there that might shock them if things don't go just
right for them or if they don't bring their 'A' game.
I'm really looking forward to Pegasus. It's going to be a fun
week, a heck of a race, and the start of great opportunities in
2017.

North America, unless otherwise indicated

NYRA ANNOUNCES ENHANCED SPRING
2-YEAR-OLD PROGRAM The New York Racing Association will card eight maiden races
worth $100,000 each during the spring leading up to Belmont=s
June 8 Astoria S. and June 9 Tremont S. in an ongoing effort to
build up its early juvenile program. Fillies may run in the Astoria
Trial A, 4 1/2 furlongs at Aqueduct Apr. 19; Astoria Trial B and C,
contested at Belmont over five furlongs May 3 and May 17,
respectively; and Astoria Trial D over five furlongs of Belmont
turf May 25. Male juveniles will contest the Tremont Trial A over
4 1/2 panels at Aqueduct Apr. 20; the Tremont Trial B and C at
Belmont going five furlongs May 4 and May 18, respectively;
and the Tremont Trial D on the turf May 26. Fields for each trial
are limited to 10 starters, with $50,000 to the winner. All
runners will be paid. If 10 runners start, the second through
sixth-place horses would receive $20,000, $10,000, $7,500,
5,000 and $4,000, respectively, with the remaining $3,500
divided among the seventh through 10th-place finishers.
Additionally, bonuses of up to $20,000 will be available to
owners and trainers of New York-breds who finish second or
third in any state-bred or open maiden juvenile race held during
the Aqueduct spring or Belmont spring-summer meets. The
bonuses, offered in partnership with the New York Breeding
Fund, stipulate that owners will receive $7,000, $4,500 and
$2,500 bonuses for first, second and third, respectively. Trainer
bonuses will be $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000.
According to a release, NYRA ran 26 juvenile maiden races
during the spring and summer in 2016--up from 16 in 2015.
Those races attracted 222 total starters, a 65.57% increase year-
over-year, and averaged 8.54 starters per race.
AA strong 2-year-old program is important to the Aqueduct
and Belmont spring meets and the high demand for the bonus
program in 2016 shows us that we're moving our racing
program in the right direction," said Martin Panza, NYRA's
Senior Vice President of Racing Operations. AIt's one thing to
offer races, but it's another thing to make sure they go. We want
our horsemen to feel confident when they send their
2-year-olds to New York in April, May, or June, that we will
make every effort to be sure these races are used.@

behind a :22.92 quarter. Stymied in traffic for much of the far

earn a half-length decision. The winner=s third dam is

Middleburg Training Center Donated to TRF:
Horseman and real estate entrepreneur Randy Rouse has
donated the historic Middleburg Training Center in Virginia to
the Thoroughbred Retirement Fund (TRF), the Fauquier Times
reports. The transaction was completed Thursday, and Rouse, a
prominent figure in the local horse community, turned 100
years old Friday. Originally built by the great owner/breeder
Paul Mellon in the 1950s as a private training facility, the
training center was purchased by Rouse in 2006 and has been
on the market in recent years. About 80 horses are currently
based at the center, and TRF President and COO Lenny Hale said
that current operations will continue. He also told the Fauquier
Times that there are plans to renovate the property to prepare
for an expected 90 retired Thoroughbreds that will be housed
there. AWe=re hoping that it will eventually support itself,@ said
Hale. AWe=d also like to involve the community, use it for riding
for the disabled and wounded veterans. We have a lot of
options and it will take a little time to get it done.@ TRF Director,
External Affairs Diana Pikulski told the TDN, AThe training center
is in the heart of some of the nicest horse country in America. It
will be a beautiful place to showcase the work of the TRF and
brilliance of the Thoroughbred in many disciplines.@

favorite Fantastic Style (Harlan=s Holiday) in early stretch, but
Bad Ju Ju, who had weaved her way into contention on the turn,

in the Eddie Logan S. at Santa Anita.
Taken for $40,000 from the Doug O=Neill barn out of a
fourth-place finish Sept. 2 at Del Mar, the chestnut graduated
next out in a maiden seller here Oct. 2. Tried in the off-the-turf
GIII Cecil B. DeMille S. last out Nov. 27 at Del Mar, the $100,000
KEENOV buy was a good
second at 12-1 after
contesting a quick pace. Sent
off at the same number in
this turf debut, Vending
Machine showed speed to
chase inside from third
through moderate splits of
:23.86 and :48.19. Patiently
handled on the far turn, he
was sent after frontrunner Cistron (The Factor) in earnest
approaching the quarter pole and overtook that foe at the
sixteenth marker before holding off late-running favorite Soglio
(Scat Daddy) by a half-length in 1:35.87. The winner=s dam has a
yearling filly by Street Cry (Ire) and foaled a Cairo Prince colt this
term before visiting Bellamy Road. Click for the Equibase.com

fifth in her debut Aug. 28 at Del Mar and ran second there
Nov. 12 before finishing a respectable third at 33-1 when
stepped up into the GI Starlet S. Dec. 10 at Los Alamitos.
Hammered down to 3-5 here, the $300,000 Fasig-Tipton March
breezer held a narrow advantage through splits of :23.66 and
:47.39. Confidently handled around the far bend, the chalk was
cut loose after three-quarters in 1:12.06 and beat back the
stretch challenge of Spooky Woods (Ghostzapper) for a half-
length victory. Mopotism is the first foal out of a half to MGSW
Songster (Songandaprayer). Peppy Rafaela=s yearling filly by

beat slowly, the chestnut settled in fourth, about a half-dozen
lengths off a contested quarter in :23.07. Advancing three-wide
on the turn, he swept to the fore outside the eighth pole and
kept to his task for a 2 1/4-length tally. Odds-on favorite Call the

CHANGING OF THE GUARDAT THOMASTOWN CASTLE
By Daithi Harvey
There will be a new name on the trainer's license at
Thomastown Castle Stables in the New Year, and if James Stack
doesn't sound familiar to some people, that's because he has
been known as 'Fozzy' for pretty much as long as he can
remember. Stack officially takes over the baton from his father
Tommy, who partnered the legendary Red Rum to his third
Grand National victory in 1977, and who has been based at the
picturesque Thomastown Castle in Tipperary since taking over
the yard from the late Phonsie O'Brien in the mid-eighties. The
passing of the reins will not see a seismic change in operations;
Stack junior has played a pivotal role in the business since his
father got struck down with meningitis in 1998, an event that
forced his son to abandon his then-role as assistant to John
Dunlop and return home at the tender age of 19 to oversee the
training of one of Ireland's leading flat stables.
The year of 2016 hasn't been one of the more successful
seasons, with Stack bemoaning the fact they had "more seconds
than winners," and he said he is hopeful that among the fresh
intake of 30 or so yearlings they might in 2017 unearth another
Myboycharlie (Ire) (Danetime {Ire}), the now-respected stallion
that the Stack team trained to win the G1 Darley Prix Morny in
2007. To offset a small decrease in the number of winners, Stack
continues to augment his business through trading horses to
countries such as America and Hong Kong. Cont. p2
ROSEHILL TRIALS TO PRODUCE SOME STARSby Alan Carasso
It was a busy Friday morning at Rosehill Gardens, as the track
hosted no fewer than 18 barrier trials, and there was no more
successful collaboration than that of Team Hawkes and jockey
Tommy Berry. They teamed to win three of the trials, while
Berry added a fourth for trainer Michael Freedman.
Perhaps the star of the morning was the 2-year-old colt Eden
Roc (Aus) (Star Witness {Aus}), an A$750,000 purchase from the
Widden Stud consignment at the 2016 Magic Millions Gold
Coast Yearling Sale who quickened home to take the day=s
seventh trial (900m) by 3 1/4 lengths in :53.90. Alertly away,
Eden Roc set a pressured pace before swatting away his rival en
route to a facile success before galloping out with good energy
(video).

Stack cont. from p1
"We had quite a good year selling horses," he said. "A recent
example being Tooreen Dancer (Ire) (Vale Of York {Ire}), who
won her maiden first time out at Dundalk last month. A
California-based agent rang me about her soon after and she has
gone out there to be trained by Phil D'Amato."
As a i6,500 yearling, one can be sure Tooreen Dancer
enhanced her resale value significantly through her Dundalk
victory. Stack isn't shy either about traveling his own horses
abroad if he thinks they can be competitive. Success for
Alexander Tango (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) in the GI Garden
City S. at Belmont in 2007 and a win for Waltzing Matilda (Ire)
(Danehill Dancer {Ire}) in the GII New York S. also at Belmont in
2015 are two prime examples, and he came close to plundering
another nice pot with Diamond Fields (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus})
earlier this year. The Mary Slack-owned 3-year-old was a model
of consistency throughout the summer, and following stakes
placings over six furlongs at Navan and over a mile at Royal
Ascot in the Listed Sandringham H., Stack sent her to Saratoga,
where a slipped
saddle ruined her
chance on her first
run there in the GII
Lake George S. in
July. Turned out a
month later in the GII
Lake Placid S., the
filly finished a good
third to Time And
Motion (Tapit). Stack
then pointed
Diamond Fields to the GII Sands Point S. at Belmont Sept. 16 and
she again acquitted herself well, finishing second to On Leave
(War Front).
"She's back here now and stays in training next year, which is
great,@ Stack says. AObviously it would be great to win a stakes
race with her, so that will be the objective and if we have to
travel to do so then so be it. I'm not sure she fully got the nine
furlongs in Belmont, so it may be a case of limiting her to a mile,
but we'll see, she's quite adaptable."
Another benefit of racing them in America is the prize money,"
Stack adds. "Diamond Fields won $130,000 out there and even
though it costs a bit to ship them, the gains are still significant.
With fillies, they are also adding value to themselves. If the
owner was a seller she could have gotten a lot of money for her
over there."
That owner, South Africa-based Mary Slack, has half a dozen
horses with Stack, a link that came about through Stack's
friendship with Mike De Kock. This in turn has also led to the
trainer receiving patronage from another significant South
African figure, Gaynor Rupert. In addition to the above clients,
Stack can also count on support of owners from New Zealand,
Japan, Hong Kong, Britain and of course Ireland, where he has a
number of syndicates on board as well as the Coolmore team
maintaining historic links with the yard, even more so now with
the recent retirement of his friend David Wachman.
"Thank God we're not too heavily reliant on one owner, we
have a good mix of clients and fingers crossed it continues that
way," he says.
In addition to a strong squad of juveniles, Stack's team for
2017 is also bolstered by a few smart older horses, headed by
Onenightidreamed (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}), a soft
ground-specialist who is a dual Group 3 winner on his favoured
surface. Given he won the Irish Lincolnshire on the opening day
of the flat season in
2015, Stack already
has one eye on the
2017 opener, though
it will be staged in
Naas due to the The
Curragh
redevelopment. "He
might be a bit high
for the Lincoln this
year so we'll have to
see,@ Stack said. AAs
long as the ground is soft he'll run away in whatever he can."
Another one the trainer is keen on is Son Of Rest (GB) (Pivotal
{GB}), who remains a maiden after two promising juvenile
efforts this year. Second at Tipperary on debut, he certainly
wasn't disgraced when making eye-catching late headway to
finish fourth to Churchill (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G1 Goffs
Vincent O'Brien National S. at The Curragh in September.
"He's not a bad horse and could end up being a smart sprinter.
He might get a mile, but I would say we will go down the
sprinting route with him," Stack explains.
Stack will also begin the new season with a new stable jockey,
though he will have to share him with one of Ireland's senior
statesmen Kevin Prendergast. "Chris [Hayes] will start when he
gets back from Dubai, he'll come down here Tuesdays and
Fridays, the days we do fast work,@ he says. AThere shouldn't be
much overlap with Kevin, only I suppose if we both run
something we really fancy in the one race, but I can't imagine
that'll happen too often."
In conjunction with a thriving racing stable, the Stacks also run
a breeding programme that has produced some stellar results in
recent years, though the new trainer will be the first to admit
that it could have been more beneficial to their training
enterprise had some different decisions been made. Cont. p3

Thomastown Castle Stud cont.
"We sold both The Wow Signal (Ire) (Starspangledbanner
{Aus}) and The Last Lion (Ire) (Choisir {Aus}) as yearlings in
recent years so I guess that mightn't have been the smartest
thing in the world to do,@ he notes. AAlthough we did well out of
a Power (GB) yearling half-brother to The Last Lion that we sold
this year in Goffs, so that made up for it a bit."
The family also made up for selling The Wow Signal by cashing
in his dam, Muravka (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}), after the John
Quinn-trained horse won the G1 Prix Morny. The Last Lion, bred
by the Stacks in partnership with Barronstown Stud, is out of
Mala Mala (Ire) (Brief Truce), who hails from a family that the
Stacks know well, being a half-sister to Tarascon (Ire) (Tirol {Ire}),
who they trained to win the G1 Moyglare Stud S. in 1997 and
the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas the following year.
"Mala Mala has been a great broodmare, producing eight
winners from eight runners, including three black-type winners,@
Stack said. AShe's in foal to No Nay Never, but unfortunately
she's not young so we could do with a filly from her at this
stage."
In addition to this year's G1 Middle Park S. winner and now
Darley stallion The Last Lion, Mala Mala has also bred the stakes
winners Contest (Ire)
(Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and
Russian Rock (Ire) (Rock Of
Gibraltar {Ire}), as well as
the 16-time winner
Silvanus (Ire) (Danehill
Dancer {Ire}). In total her
progeny have won over 40
races.
Training, however,
remains the major focus
for Stack, and recalling his baptism of fire into the training game
all those years ago he reflects, "I didn't think I was going to be
back in Tipperary at 19 years of age; I had literally gone straight
from school to Dunlops via the yearling sales in Newmarket. I
always thought I'd do a year or two in Australia or America, but
it was needs must at the time. I suppose I was always going to
be a trainer anyway, so when my father got his setback it just
fast-tracked it a bit."

Investments et al=s Yulong Xingsheng (Aus) (I Am Invincible
{Aus}), who was outsprinted through the first three furlongs, but
leveled off beautifully in the final 200 metres to win the trial by
3/4 of a length (video). An A$37,500 Magic Millions National
Weanling purchase, the October foal fetched A$55,000 at the
Inglis Sydney Classic yearling sale. Yzerman (Aus) (Uncle Mo), an
A$36,000 purchase from the Classic sale, took out heat number
eight, holding off a strong late bid from Newburgh (Aus) (All Too
Hard {Aus}) (video).

Rosehill Trials cont.
Corumbene Stud=s 2-year-old colt Menari (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus})
recorded his second win in a trial in the space of 10 days at the
midpoint of Friday=s flurry of activity. Trained by Gerald Ryan,
the flashy bay was soon in front while taking some heat to his
outside from Travers (Aus) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}). Menari cut
the corner into the stretch and raced away to score by 3 3/4
good-looking lengths (video). China Horse Club=s San Marco
(Aus) (Smart Missile {Aus}) touched Travers out of second, while
Merovee (Aus) (Frankel {GB}), the son of MGSW & G1SP More
Strawberries (Aus) (More Than Ready), missed the break and
finished with some interest to be fourth. Travers topped the
2015 Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale on a bid of A$300,000,
then fetched A$800,000 as a Gold Coast yearling. He is owned in
part by and carried the colors of Hong Kong trainer John Moore,
who will race the colt with China Horse Club, Newgate Stud
Farm, Aquis Farm and WinStar Farm.
Making her first trip to the trials, Divine Messenger (Aus) (Star
Witness {Aus}) gave her sire his second winner on the morning
in trial number five. Trained by Tony Gollan and ridden by Blake
Shinn, the chestnut came through to take up the running after
about 100 metres, was taken on by Lipizzan (Aus) (Sebring
{Aus}) inside the final furlongs and sprinted well to take it by
1 1/4 lengths (video). Divine Messenger, a daughter of SW &
G1SP Ladys Angel (Aus) (Arena {Aus}), was an A$80,000 graduate
of the 2016 Magic Millions Gold Coast sale, where she, too, was
consigned by Widden Stud.
The veteran Straturbo (Aus) (Stratum {Aus}) got the morning
off on a winning note for trainer Gary Portelli and earned
himself a shot at the Magic Millions Sprint with a handy success
over 1030m. Sent immediately into the lead by jockey Deanne
Panya, the 7-year-old, recent winner of the Listed Bribie H. at
Doomben, was under a stranglehold in the lane, but
nevertheless streaked in by 4 1/2 lengths (video). Another
Widden Stud grad, Straturbo, winner of the MM Sprint in 2015,
was knocked down for A$45,000 at the 2011 Magic Millions
National Yearling Sale.
>MARK= EYES RAILWAY DOUBLEby Heather Anderson
Since taking the 2015 edition of the 1200-metre NZ$200,000
G1 Sistema Railway S. with Natuzzi (NZ) (Coats Choice {Aus})
third, Ryan Mark (NZ) (Thorn Park {Aus}) has yet to return to the
winner=s enclosure in six subsequent appearances and is looking
for redemption on New Year=s Day. The 6-year-old gelding
trailed in seventh after an awkward beginning in a Ruakaka
handicap going this trip upon resuming Aug. 6. Runner-up to
Nov. 9 G3 Lindauer Stewards Stakes H. hero Reilly Lincoln (NZ)
(Pins {Aus}) in a similar contest at Hastings Sept. 17, Ryan Mark
filled the same position in the wake of Start Wondering (NZ)
(Eighth Wonder {NZ}) in the 1200-metre Listed Legacy Lodge
Sprint S. at Te Rapa Nov. 5. He enters on the back of a 10th-
place finish in Ellerslie=s G3 J.A. Russell Ltd. Concorde H. to one-
two finishers Natuzzi and Irish Moon (NZ) (O=Reilly {NZ}) Dec. 3.
2016 G1 NZ Thoroughbred Breeders= S. heroine Perfect Fit (NZ)
(Elusive City) will also attempt to regain the winning thread, as
she has been winless since her April success, reporting home

at Eagle Farm and
improving to third--
her lone run of the
season--in the
1100-metre Listed
Haunui Farm

behind MGSW
Shezhardtocatch
(NZ) (Elusive City)
and MSP Snowdrop (NZ) (Pins {Aus}) Nov. 19.
Star Wondering, ninth in going he disliked with GSP Summer=s
Day (NZ) (Darci Brahma {NZ}) second in the Listed Chainey=s
Panasonic Levin S. at Otaki Nov. 25, is also looking to bounce
back.
AThere=s no doubt he=s spot on,@ co-trainer Evan Rayner said of
Start Wondering, who he trains with his daughter J. J., to Racing
And Sports. AHe looks great and he=s working and eating well. He
just didn=t handle it [the heavy going found in the Listed
Chainey=s Panasonic Levin S.] at all.@
G1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas fifth-place finisher Astara (NZ)
(Dalghar {Fr}) could also have a say in the outcome, victorious in
the Listed Soliloquy S. at Ellerslie in October, she makes the field
with only 112 pounds.

BROWN HEADING BACK TO AUSTRALIAby Alan Carasso
Jockey Corey Brown, among the leading riders since shifting
his tack to Singapore
3 1/2 years ago, has
informed officials at the
Singapore Turf Club that
he would not be
returning for the 2017
season, citing family
reasons.
Winner of the 2009
G1 Melbourne Cup
astride Shocking (Aus),
Brown booted home a
total of 251 winners during his Kranji sojourn, 17 of those in
feature races, including the 2014 Longines Singapore Gold Cup
and 2015 Emirates Singapore Derby with Quechua (Arg).
In the top five since his arrival in April 2013, Brown was second
in the jockeys= premiership in 2015 with 87 victories, a mark
bettered only by Manoel Nunes.
The 40-year-old, who has also won the G1 Australian and
Victoria Derbies at home, will not be able to ride in Australia
until Jan. 28, having been suspended for two months after
taking a medication that resulted in his being ruled unfit to ride
by the Singapore Turf Club medical director for a meeting in
October.
