CAPSTONE PROJECT North Paulding High School
Fall 2017
This presentation has been created to provide you with an
overview of the requirements of North Paulding High School’s
Senior Capstone Project.
In addition to this presentation, you will be provided with a
NPHS Capstone Project Handbook, a Project Proposal Form, a
Mentor / Mentee Agreement Form, and a Mentor Log.
Please make a note of the dates that are provided in your
handbook and this presentation. The Capstone will result in
two summative grades in your English course, so you want to
make sure that all components are completed and submitted
by the appropriate deadlines.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
The state of Georgia intends for the Capstone Project to be the culminating activity of a student’s high school career.
Students use the Capstone Project to research their intended career path and develop a relationship with one (or more) individuals who work in the career (or a related career).
The students will present the information gathered in written form, a visual aid, and a presentation to a panel of judges.
The project is embedded in the English curriculum and will count as a percentage of your English course grade (one summative grade for the Research Paper and one summative grade for the Presentation)
GRADUATION REQUIREMENT
You must complete the Capstone Project by the time you graduate.
At NPHS, students will complete the Capstone when they take one of the following classes:
•Advanced Composition
•British Lit
•Honors British Lit
•AP Literature
The following students are exempt from the Capstone:
•Students in Work-Based Learning while enrolled in the identified English classes.
•Dual Enrollment students who are taking English at their college during the year they would take either Advanced Comp, British Lit, Honors British Lit, or AP Literature.

Even though it is a required project, you stand to gain a lot of personal advantages by completing the Capstone Project:
1. You’re going to develop a connection (or several connections) in your career field through your mentor.
2. You’re going to develop a cover letter and resume that you can use for future job interviews.
3. You’re going to develop your interview skills through the presentation experience.
4. You’re taking the time to really research and reflect upon the career field that you may be involved with for many years to come.

Submit to your English teacher on or beforeAugust 29, 2017
THE RESEARCH PAPER
The specific guidelines will be reviewed by your English teacher (you’ll receive the rubric used for scoring the paper)
You will research your career choice, including a hot topic in your chosen field
Submit to your English teacher on or before the Wednesday before September Break or February Break
Students will have an opportunity to recover, if needed
MENTOR
Log at least eight (8) hours with mentor in chosen career field
Does not require on-the-job mentoring; but we do encourage job-shadowing
Can be with phone calls, e-mailing back and forth, and/or Skype interviews
A signed Mentor / Mentee agreement must be submitted on or before the due date!
The Mentor Log is due at your presentation as part of your portfolio.

MENTOR
JOB SHADOWING When possible, students are encouraged to complete job shadowing with their mentor.
Students must shadow with their approved Capstone Project Mentor (the one identified on the Mentor Agreement Form).
Job shadowing is considered an exempt absence. It will NOT count against exam exemption. You are responsible for any missed assignments in your classes.
In order to participate in job shadowing, the student must submit the Mentor Job Shadow Request at least one week prior to the Job Shadow day.
Submit the form to your English teacher or school counselor. The form must be signed by both the student and the parent.

THE PORTFOLIO
The portfolio is a notebook, binder, items in report cover, etc. that is submitted at your presentation. Loose pages will not be accepted.
The following are REQUIRED ITEMSthat must be submitted in your portfolio:

The following are BONUS ITEMS that can be included in the portfolio for additional bonus points:
Miscellaneous career related items
Work samples/achievements
Activities/Honors
The portfolio will be evaluated as part of your Presentation grade.

THE PRODUCT
The Product is something that the student can present during his or her presentation that describes or highlights the selected career field.
Examples of acceptable products include creating a video / PowerPoint, bringing in an item used in the career, making a creation generated in said career, and/or engaging in activity that shows a use of the skills related to the career.
Students are not required to spend money on the Product!
The Product is due at the time of the Presentation. Failure to submit a Product will impact the Presentation grade.
THE PRESENTATION
You will receive a scheduled appointment for your presentation.
Your presentation should take about 5 -7 minutes (less than 5 minutes or longer than 10 minutes will result in a deduction of points).
You will need to submit completed portfolio and include your product at your presentation.
You should be dressed appropriately for your presentation. At the very least, look your best!
Remember to maintain good eye contact, watch your body composure, moderate your vocal expression, and be engaging.
