TRANSCRIPT

2012 Men’s Premier

Petone vs Island Bay AFC

Monday 9th April2pm

Welcome to Memorial Park for the first Premier League home game of 2012 for our Reserve Team and a special welcome to Island Bay United, their officials and supporters.

Our boys had a great season last year and are excited about the challenge that lays ahead. They performed well in the Hilton Petone Tournament, reaching the final before losing on penalties but the real test starts today. They’ll face six first teams throughout the season and our player depth will be tested, but I believe they’re up to the challenge.

Today well get a good idea of the step up required to compete in this league so good luck to Chris, Rob and the squad for today and the entire season. – we’re all behind you.

I would also like to extend a huge thank you to our club sponsors for their fantastic support. Your generosity is invaluable and greatly appreciated and I urge all club members to please support our sponsors in return.

Good luck to everyone for the year and thanks for continuing to support our great club. I look forward to hearing the tales of near misses, 40 yard screamers and unbelievable saves over a beer or two – and that’s just from The Dreamers!3

Remember to play hard but play fair.

Craig DeadmanChairman, Petone Football Club

This year Island Bay are fielding fourteen men’s teams and one women’s team. The Junior club also continues to increase with over 500 juniors including around 100+ 5-6 year olds participating in our ‘First Kicks’ and 100+ 7-8 year olds participating in ‘Fun Football’ each Saturday morning on the Wakefield artificial.

The Visitors: Island Bay AFC

Hi all, and welcome to our first home game in Capital Premier for 2012. For Petone this marks a great achievement in fielding teams in the top two divisions in the region. But it will also pose a great challenge in terms of player depth, but both the Central League and Capital Premier sides will continue to support each other as the season progresses.

It will also be a significant stride forward in the development of our young players that are coming through the club, and with the addition of Stu Pyne as the Youth Director of Football, we can expect to see a steady line of promising youth players coming through. With that in mind it is probably fitting that we host Island Bay first up, who themselves with the link to the Ole Academy are also working hard to further the development opportunities for their players. We wish you the best on that front, especially for Nick Edginton, who we welcome back to the club today.

In terms of our aims for the season, this will be fairly simple. We will look to continue the great work we started last year with promotion from the Capital 1 division and to accumulate as many points as possible in the first half of the season to cement our place in the division. Once this is achieved we can look at the next steps, but will hopefully cause some surprises along the way.

With us coming off a penalty shootout loss in the Hilton Petone Tournament final we are all looking forward to hitting the season proper with a lot of confidence behind us that we can compete at the next level and further enhance the reputation of Petone FC in the region.

Good luck to all in the season ahead.

Sambo
