Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay will soon be moving to a new home. Our current building is on land leased from the University of Delaware in Newark. The lease expires December 2015, when the University will purchase our 25 year old building.

Our new building The Northern Resource Center will be built on a beautiful seven acre wooded lot on Old Baltimore Pike in Newark, DE and will serve about 11,600 Girl Scouts and 4,300 adult members on the Delmarva Peninsula. The building design includes a multi-purpose room, retail shop, offices and exhibit area. The woods and stream will be used for on-site outdoor education.

We can only build girls of courage, confidence, and character with support from people like you.

Why is Girl Scouting Important?

Girl Scouting says “yes” to every girl—we break the leadership barrier for girls of all backgrounds.   

Girl Scouting helps develop girls who are inspired to make a difference in their world, and who have the life skills to become successful leaders, collaborators, and community builders. We are the job creators of the future, helping to build gender-balanced leadership.

Our alumnae are living proof that what we teach today impacts the leaders of tomorrow. Eighty percent of women business owners were Girl Scouts, as were 69 percent of female US Senators and Members of Congress. The research is clear–Girl Scout alumnae are more likely to graduate from college, earn more money, vote, and be active volunteers.

Girls from families of comparatively low socio-economic status report increased impact of Girl Scouting on their leadership skills and personal development. They especially benefit from Girl Scout experiences that hone their problem-solving skills—skills that are essential to academic success and resilience.

We are dedicated to our mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.

We serve girls throughout the Delmarva Peninsula – in 14 counties across Delaware and the Eastern Shores of Maryland and Virginia.  Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay recruits and retains a diverse membership of Girl Scouts and adult volunteers. Since 2012, African American girl membership has increased by 17 percent and Hispanic girl membership has increased by 20 percent.

The Power of Cookies The Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largest girl-run entrepreneurial business in the world, helping girls develop five essential life skills: goal setting, people skills, money management, decision-making and business ethics.  

Community OutreachThrough our community outreach programs, underserved girls experience leadership, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), financial literacy and anti-bullying programs in partnership with local schools and community organizations. About 37 percent of our membership is served through community outreach.

We also partner with local educational and environmental non-profits to deliver high-quality programming for girls. Recent partners include: Delaware State Parks, Winterthur Museum, Chesapeake Maritime Museum, Biggs Museum, Ward Museum, and the Delaware Nature Society.

Our own innovative leadership programs focus especially on STEM and Financial Literacy. Last year, we offered 200 programs throughout the Delmarva Peninsula, and we continually evaluate our program outcomes to provide excellent leadership experiences.

The Northern Resource Center – A Community Need  

Our new 17,000 square-foot building will be on a 7-acre wooded property on Old Baltimore Pike in Newark, DE.  

We are building, rather than renting, because in the long run it is more economical to own the property. Renting equivalent space for 40 years would cost $6.8 million. In 2015, we’ll celebrate 100 years on the Delmarva Peninsula, and we plan to be in our new building for many years to come.  

Our new building will be a hub of activity. It will be a beacon for all girls. 

• Girl Scouts in Grades K-12 will use our building for troop meetings, activities, overnights and programs.• Girls and volunteers will purchase uniforms, guide books and badges in the modern Bay Shop,

our retail store.• Membership specialists and registrars will recruit and register around 11,600 girls in 725 troops

each year.• Program specialists will develop, facilitate, and evaluate programs for girls. Last year, we offered

nearly 200 programs throughout the Delmarva Peninsula.• Community Outreach staff will coordinate and evaluate programs for under-served girls.• Volunteer coordinators will recruit and train adult volunteers.• Flags, tents, and program materials will be stored for troop usage.

• Staff will manage finances, administration, operations and communications for the council.

• Our multi-purpose room will be available for community groups, Girl Scouts, and families.

• Summer programs will be held on-site, including use by community partners.

• Product Program team will coordinate distribution of nearly 1 million boxes of cookies.

• Modern HVAC, phone, and computer systems will reduce our annual utility costs.

• Girl Scout traditions will be highlighted in a well-lit display space. Girls will learn the history of Girl Scouting, try on uniforms, and see the gear used by prior generations in the History Discovery Room.  

• The on-site stream, wetlands and rolling hills will be used for outdoor education. We will create nature trails and rain gardens and host on-site STEM programs.

Property settlement occurred Fall 2014 and the site work and construction mobilization began immediately thereafter. We plan to move into the new building in December 2015. The building renderings, site plan, and floor plan are available for your review on our website, www.gscb.org/beacon.

Capital Campaign We expect great success as we solicit gifts due to the strong Girl Scout mission. We anticipate major support from foundations, corporations, community groups, and generous individuals who believe in the Girl Scouts.

We have a wide base of volunteers, with 4,300 adult members, four regional Advisory Councils and a committed Board of Directors. We also seek support directly from Girl Scout families and local alumnae. Girls will earn a fun patch, “Building the Beacon,” as they learn about the capital campaign and the importance of personal philanthropy. We will rely on our entire Girl Scout family to contribute enthusiastically to our capital campaign.

Donor recognition opportunities include: the beacon, board room, CEO’s office, creativity room, retail store, alumnae center, museum display, rain gardens, nature trails, and more. Our generous donors will also be recognized on our website and on the “donor wall” in the new building.
