The industries are rewarding, vast and still expanding, if this is your ambition we can help you realise your dreams.Courses at Capel Manor College focus on teaching practical skills in working environments, we have exceptional arboriculture and countryside management tutors who are all industry-experienced.

Arboriculture is a vital industry involved with the planting, care and maintenance of trees in woodlands, rural and urban areas. It is closely linked to forestry, which is the science and practice of managing forests and woodlands. Our students go on to set up their own businesses, or to work as tree surgeons for employers and contractors, others build careers as tree officers, tree surveyors, tree inspectors, arborists, climbers and groundspeople.

Countryside management is managing, protecting and improving the countryside whilst encouraging people to visit and enjoy the land. Environmental conservation work involves the preservation of

landscapes, habitats and wildlife, constantly working to improve the environment at a local and national level.

Careers in countryside management and environmental conservation require specialist knowledge and a passion for the countryside, there are career opportunities in landscape, habitat and species management, countryside recreation, planning and parks and even climate change. Opportunities exist in a range of organisations from government departments to local authorities, charities and the voluntary sector.

The outdoor adventure industry is rapidly growing because of an increasing participation and interest in all sorts of outdoor sports and activities. Careers in the industry involve leading and running a wide-range of outdoor physical activities and resources, encouraging people to

“I was working as a painter and decorator before I started the course. I hadn’t thought about what else I could be doing until a friend suggested I look into gardening or tree surgery as I enjoy spending time outside and wanted to do something new. I spent Thursday’s at College training to be a tree surgeon, and I loved it. Before I came to Capel I had no idea about trees, now I know how to check equipment, climb the trees and inspect them for signs of disease or fungus. When I first came to the college, I thought there’s no way I’m going to be able to climb a tree with a chainsaw. Now I can’t wait to give it a go.

The training happens in one-week blocks, I then have time to apply and practise what I have learnt back at work with the support of my employer.

“I was head of acquisitions for a film sales and finance company involved in Oscar winning films including The Iron Lady. During the recession I was made redundant giving me the freedom to think about what I wanted from a career. I signed up to a Woodlands Skills course at Capel and was inspired to continue to do Countryside Management.

Now it’s as if a different world has opened up for me. I have a whole new perspective of the world around me and a new career ahead. It’s wonderful to be more aware and appreciative of green spaces like parks and gardens, especially in a dense urban city like London. And none of it would be possible without Capel and the support of the amazing teachers there.

“I am working with the Chiltern Rangers while completing my Environmental Conservation Apprenticeship and my experience so far has been amazing. I don’t think a job has ever left me this exhausted after an average day’s work, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m quite lucky as I applied for this position without much hope of getting the job. I didn’t think I had the right qualifications but after reading the job description I knew I had to at least try, it seemed like something I would really enjoy and be quite good at. I’m still here, so it looks like I’ll be sticking around and I’m thrilled to be doing so.

“Combining work with college has given me confidence; not only to do my job but to do it properly and to the standards required by the industry. I am very independent but I have learnt to be a team player – you can’t climb trees solo! My tutors at Capel Manor have really encouraged me, they are patient and understanding and have supported me every step of the way.

Matthew is completing an Advanced Apprenticeship in Trees and Timber (Level 3).
