5(a). Self-healing Test (as per CI.18 of IEC: 60831 -1:2002-11 -Edition 2.1 & IEC: 60831-2:1995-12)

A test voltage of 946 volts ac (2.15 U N ) was applied between the terminals of the capacitor and maintained for a period of 10 seconds. Number of Self-healing breakdowns were counted. Since more than five breakdowns occurred, the test voltage was reduced to zero. The Capacitance was then measured at the rated voltage(1.0UN= 440 Vac) and at ambient temperature between terminals.

8. Ageing Test ( as per CI.17 of IEC 60831-1:2002-11-Edition 2.1 & IEC 60831-2-1995-12)

(i) Initial 750 hours of Ageing Test (CI.17.2(a) of IEC 60831-2-1995-12)

Ageing test was performed by placing the test capacitor inside an hot air oven. The test conditions were as follows:

a) Test Temperature : 54°C

For Ageing test, case temperature of the capacitor was maintained at 45°C which is the highest mean temperature in 24 hours,(as per Table 1 of IEC: 60831-1-2002-11) plus 9°C,which is the difference between the capacitor case temperature and the cooling air temperature recorded at the end of thermal stability test (refer to test at SI.No.3 (a) under Type tests).

b) Temperature tolerance : ± 2°C

c) Test voltage : 550 Volts ac (1.25UN)

All the three phases of the capacitor sample were energized with the help of of 3 0 voltage source by applying the test voltage of 550 volts ac after the container of the capacitor reached the test temperature of 54°C± 2°C.

d) Test duration : 750 hours

(ii) Charge discharge Cycle test (as per Cl.17.2 (b) of IEC: 60831-2:1995-12)

After completing the ageing test on the sample for 750 hours, a test voltage of 880 V dc (2U N dc) was applied between terminals 1 & 3 (terminal 2 left unconnected) for 10 seconds and then discharged through an inductance of value 4.2 uH within 20 seconds. This constituted one cycle. The sample was subjected to 1000 such charge - discharge cycles. Through out the test, the temperature of the capacitor case was maintained at 54°C ± 2°C as per Cl.17.2 of IEC: 60831-2:1995-12. After 1000 charge - discharge cycles the sample was subjected to repeat ageing test.

(Mi) Repeat Ageing Test (Cl.17.2(c) of IEC 60831-2-1995-12)

The ageing test was repeated as in test at SI. No. 8 (i) after 1000 charge discharge cycles.

Test conditions: i) Test voltage : 550 Volts ac (1.25 U N )

ii) Test temperature : 54°C ± 2°C iii) Test duration : 750 hours

Test Result: 1) No permanent breakdown occurred. 2) No interruption or flashover occurred.

(iv) Change in capacitance before and after Ageing Test (as per 17.3 of IEC 60831-2-1995-12)

9(a) Destruction Test (as per CI. 19 of IEC 60831-2-1995-12)

The capacitor sample was mounted in a circulating air oven maintained at a temperature of 55°C without energizing. After all the parts of the capacitor attained the test temperature, the destruction test was performed between terminals 3 and 1& 2 (joined together) as per CI. 19.1 of IEC 60831-2-1995-12).

The test voltages applied are as given below: a) A C voltage of 572 volts ac (1,3U N ac) b) DC voltage of 4.4 kV dc (10 U N dc)

After the capacitor current reduced to 66% of the initial current, the test procedure was interrupted.

Test Result: 1) Sample withstood the test 2) No escaping liquid material observed on the surface of the capacitor 3) The capacitor container not broken 4) No flame or fiery particles observed

Test summary: The capacitor sample complies with the requirements of IEC 60831-1:2002-11-Edition 2.1 and IEC: 60831-2:1995-12 for Routine and Type tests Performed as above.
