In my speech during the Harmony Day assembly, I spoke about ensuring that our children embrace Australian culture whilst not letting go of the culture from which they have come. Our Homework Policy encourages families to have conversations around the dinner table and share stories. These stories about your cultural background, need to be shared with your children so that they have a clear understanding about their background. It is interesting (as I was the same at their age) when asked, “Where are you from?” I would always answer, “I am an Australian”. This is correct however not knowing or celebrating our cultural backgrounds deprives Australia of the rich benefits of a multicultural society. Harmony Day is a beautiful day in our school and it was great to see so many proud parents and family members at the assembly enjoying the dancing and the colourful costumes. I also appreciated the extra effort parents went to, to dress up themselves- even many of our dads. This all added to the colourfulness and warmth of the day. Special thanks to Catherine Medwin who coordinated the whole day and David Taylor and Jemma Dunstan for their expertise in coordinating the assembly. This is a tough task as there is music to be played, microphones and seating to organise as well as ensuring our performers were ready to go. Jemma Dunstan also did a brilliant job with organising the choir who sang beautifully. Thanks also to Alica Wallwork for her photographic skills. Final thanks goes to all of our teachers for the extra effort in firstly dressing up and also for the extra effort they put into ensuring that the family rotation activities they organised were engaging and provided more stimulus for our students regarding Harmony Day. We are reflecting on our celebration as we always do with the vision to make the day even more engaging for all. As we get bigger as a school logistically it becomes more difficult. I appreciate the cooperation from our Parents and Friends in remaining within our designated areas. We do this to ensure the safety of our students, as they can get lost in the crowd of over 1000 people. I really appreciate the warm feedback I received about the day from our visitors as they were leaving after the events. This small gesture means a lot to us as we work really hard to make these events a success. Our Harmony Day photos are a real representation of the diversity of our community and from the happy faces, it is clear that the day was a resounding success. Happy Harmony Day!

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT – Andrew Felsinger

HARMONY DAY Harmony Day is a highlight of our school calendar. It was fantastic to see so much colour and movement. I really appreciate all of our parents for embracing the event and supporting us by assisting your child in having a suitable costume. We had many countries and cultures represented from all over the world. We had plenty of Aussies too. We also had many dressed in orange, which is the colour of Harmony Day. In my speech during the Harmony Day assembly, I spoke about ensuring that our children embrace Australian culture whilst not letting go of the culture from which they have come. Our Homework Policy encourages families to have conversations around the dinner table and share stories. These stories about your cultural background, need to be shared with your children so that they have a clear understanding about their background. SCHOOL UNIFORM As we are moving towards the end of Term 1 and into the colder months, I would just like to remind all parents that our uniform policy still applies. All parents signed an agreement at enrolment that they would adhere to our uniform policy 100% of the time. Therefore, all items of clothing that student’s wear to school must comply with our Uniform Policy. Jackets and beanies should be the Barton PS jackets and beanies, which have our logo. Our uniform allows for layering and parents should be aware of the long sleeve polo and tracksuit bottom options, which add extra warmth. All of our learning hubs are heated between 21-26 degrees consistently. Therefore, when the students are in their learning hubs they are quite comfortable and can take a layer off e.g. outer jacket and beanie. When they go outside for playtime, they can then add this layer and wear their beanie. Any undershirt should be navy blue. Parents of girls are reminded that leggings are not pants and are not part of our uniform. Students are permitted to wear leggings underneath their skirt/dress but not as a top layer. If parents are unsure of the Uniform policy, they can download a copy from our website.

SCHOOL PHOTOS

Our official school photos were conducted today and we had some very positive feedback from the photographers about how polite and well mannered our Barton students are. As a Principal, it is always pleasing to here this from visitors to our school. For those students who were absent today there will be a catch up day in early Term 2 for individual photos only. We will announce the date when it is confirmed. As part of the basic package, there is a class group shot and then all of the individual portraits of each student in the class as a composite photo. If you have any questions regarding the photos please contact Master School Portraits directly.

MONASH UNIVERSITY RESEARCH PROJECT Monash University have commenced a research project around effective learning in schools. Our school was selected as we have an outstanding reputation as being a leader in current Teaching and Learning practices. A team from Monash was here today to film our spaces and also some of our teachers and students. I am very proud of our school and our growing reputation as being educational leaders.

LIBRARY BOOKS AND TAKE HOME READERS Can all parents please have a look at home for any Barton PS books. We are currently missing 10% of our stock, which is having an impact on our student learning as our range, and number of books available to our students has diminished. Your help with this would be appreciated.

Teaching and Learning at BPS

At Barton PS we have high expectations in all we do, from uniform, to behaviour and especially in

the area of student learning.

Our over-arching driver is the Victorian Curriculum, which can be accessed at

http://victoriancurriculum.vcaa.vic.edu.au/. This is what we will report to at the end of each

semester. However, it is determined individually by schools as to the best approaches for

implementing the curriculum. To offer your child the best possible education at Barton PS, we

provide a range of teaching and learning approaches that have been chosen due to research-

based evidence that indicates their significant impact on constantly improving student learning.

Some of these approaches include; VCOP and Big Write, CAFÉ and Daily 5 Reading, the

George Booker approach to teaching mathematics and Primary Connections as a base for

Science. Throughout everything we do, our teachers are constantly monitoring your child’s entry

point and level of understanding and then measuring the growth that they make throughout a

topic, term, semester and year. At any time, you can ask our teachers about your child’s learning

and they will be able to demonstrate how they have tracked your child’s progress and discuss the

growth they have made. This is why our weekly Professional Learning Team meetings on a

Wednesday afternoon are so imperative to all we do here at Barton, as it is in these meetings

that individual needs are pin pointed and planned for.

Your child’s teacher may believe your child needs extra support with their learning and may

develop Learning Plans and Behaviour Support Plans. These are common practice in schools

and are used to target particular goals for a student, in consultation with both the class teacher

and yourselves as parents. Through these plans we will, if needed, engage the Department of

Education Student Support Services, such as Speech Pathologists and/or Educational

Psychologists.

Your first point of contact regarding your child’ learning is your child’s teacher. There are a variety of ways

that you can contact them:

GRADE 1 NEWS

The Grade 1 students dressed up as different Superheros to raise money for Caring for Carers. We had many different Superheros in the learning hub who all took on different missions for the

day!

Their first mission of the day was to draw a picture of the Superhero they came dressed up as

and write some adjectives to describe their Superhero.

Parent Reminders

If you would like to have a chat with your child’s teacher please remember that you have the

opportunity to do so after school when we are on yard duty.

Now that your child has been given their online program login details, please encourage your child to

use the programs at home. If you have any questions regarding this, please email your child’s

Students need a drink bottle at school every day, which is full of water.

Fruit break is at 10:00am – please ensure your child has some fruit to eat at this time.

School begins at 8:55am sharp.

Please make sure students bring their reading pouch to school every day with their yellow diary.

Teachers are on yard duty every day from 3:15pm-3:30pm (2:30pm-2:45pm on Wednesdays). Please

feel free to come and see us if you have any concerns.

The Grade 2’s were awesome Superheroes!

The teachers and students in Grade 2 absolutely loved dressing up as their favourite Superheroes for the

Caring for Carers Charity event on Friday the 15th of March. We had so many different Superheroes such

as Superman, Wonder Woman, Spiderman and many more! It was great to see the students so excited

and eager to dress up in order to raise money for charity!

Reading in Grade 2!

In reading this week, the Grade 2’s had lots of fun doing different activities in their workshops. Some

activities included making words out of magnetic letters, sorting out books from fiction and non fiction and

even playing a game of Boggle to see who could make the most words from different letters!

REMINDERS:

Remember to try and be a zero hero everyday by bringing no rubbish.

Remember to bring a fruit or vegetable for fruit time.

Remember to hand in the permission form for the movie ‘Inside out’ by Monday the 1st of

April.

This week we are highlighting Grade 5-6 learning. Students have been working in rotation groups – GarageBand compositions;

Quaver Creatives compositions; Ukulele lessons and song recording in the Recording Studio. In this last activity, a group of

students record a song using a MacBook and the special studio microphones. Students gain experience in multi-track

recording, arranging, editing and mixing their own song. Fun, fun, fun!

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

On the 8th of March the Prep -2 students participated in the Kaboom Junior Sports Day & boy oh boy was it an

amazing day!! The students had a sensational time dancing, singing and being active. Even the teachers loved

getting involved. Thank you to all of the parents, carers and friends who came to support the day. I know how

much the children loved it. In addition, a big thank you to all of the teaching staff at Barton for your help &

support during the mornings events.

DATE REMINDER: GRADE 3-6 SCHOOL CROSS

COUNTRY

Friday 29th March

The grade 3-6 students of will be involved in the school Cross Country event to be held at Barton Primary.

The students have been preparing for this event throughout the last 4 weeks. They will continue to do so

right up until the event in their Physical Education lessons and extra sport time to ensure they are set up

for success for this event.

Some strategies that we have been working on are;

- Controlling breathing, by breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth - Keeping a steady pace

WHAT TO WEAR:

- Students must wear their school uniform for the run. It is suggested that they wear their polo top

and shorts if available. Students are to wear their black school shoes to school, but if they have

runners that they would prefer to wear whilst completing their run, they can change into these

before their race. If students have running shorts they are also permitted to wear these for the race

only and must get changed as soon as they have completed their run. If there is extreme heat or

heavy rain, the day could be postponed.

- All students are expected to participate unless there are medical reasons provided in

writing by parents or medical practitioner.

We have seen some brilliant finished products in the last couple of weeks in Art at BPS! Well done to our Year 2 and Year 3/4 students on their completed Chris Uphues inspired hearts, and family portraits. Here are some photos of our students’ wonderful pieces of art! We cannot wait to start our new projects for the rest of this term and continue to see some beautiful finished products, showcasing our students’ skills in various areas of Art. The Year 2s will be making animal coil pots using clay to plant some grass seeds, and the Year 3/4s will be starting a project called Heart in a Jar where they will be developing and demonstrating their watercolour blending and painting skills. While learning about the water cycle Nidish wanted to know the

answer to this question, great question Nidish!

Let’s start with how snowflakes form: it is dependant on the

temperature and environment. As water vapor freezes it forms an ice

droplet which attaches to a dust particle in the atmosphere. The water

droplet and dust particle are then joined by other droplets, which

attach onto it, sort of like a chain of water droplets that freeze linked

together. For a while the water droplets travel through the

atmosphere as a linked chain, but slowly, as the temperature and wind

changes, the frozen water droplet chain is spread out, normally into 6

long ‘arms’. As the temperature and wind changes, it spins the arms of

the water droplets, now forming into a snowflake, around and around.

The snowflake arms have all been through the same conditions on its

travel through the atmosphere so the snowflake arms may appear

symmetrical, but often they are not perfect if you look closely. As the

path that snowflakes take is different, depending on the atmosphere,

there are no two snowflakes that are exactly the same.

Isn’t nature amazing? I like to think of snowflakes as people – every

one is unique!

ENVIROMENTAL STUDIES

Students in Prep and Grade 1 have been learning

about water waste and why it is important to bring a

drink bottle to school every day. Drink bottles are a

great way to reduce water waste. Once you fill them

up the water can stay in there all day, ready for

whenever you are thirsty!

Grade 3 – 6 students have been learning about the

treatment of sewage and how recycled water is

returned to our homes and school in the purple pipes. Remember purple pipe recycled water is not for

drinking but very useful for other things including watering non-food plants, washing cars and flushing

toilets.

Barton Primary School would like to introduce to you Envision Basketball, a skills enhancement academy led by

Kareem Drayton, a certified trainer from Brooklyn, New York.

Envision Basketball currently offer 13 classes a week between 8 locations, teaching over 100 students a week.

Their curriculum is innovative and delivered in a format that every player can handle, regardless of age, gender

or skill level.

A new program will launch in Term 2

at Barton Primary School on Thursday

evenings. The program is for beginner

players through to advance level; designed

to push players to their limits.

The first class is FREE for students at Barton
