The uttention of the trustee.s and treasurers is enllecl to ·the fact that, in many tcnrns large snms of money belonging to the township func1s are loanecl without real esbte security. COURSE OF STUDY FOR THE

SCHOOLS OF COOK COUNTY.

In 1872 it course of study was prepared for the village schools of the county. It servccl a goocl purpose, and was the beginning of a WOl'k which has since resultec1_ in a thorough grading of all the principal village schools of the county. There are at the present time fifty-one gradetl schools. The various outlines of · work preparecl by the principals show that essentially the same grading exists thi'oughout the county. A carefl.tl revision of the course of study has been made; and the following outline of st1idy, covering eight J;ears of school -work, is presented. It is expected that all village schools (not thoroughly graded) will be classifiec1 in accordance with these grades.

No outline of study has ever been preparec1 for the ungraded country schools. Eacldeacher has arrangecl the stuilies to suit hinrself, and frequently impo1·ta1it branches oF study have been · olnittecl. Frequent changes of teachers in these schools, new plans which have lJee~ adopted, have resltlted in irregltlar work in the various studies, a great waste of time; ancl the discouragement of olcler pupils ,vho leave before they complete the common school studies. Many teachers of the country schools are inexperiencec1. and need the help presented ·by the classifi, cation of·· studies. The outline of study for ungraded schools herewith presented will indicate the .subjects that sholtld be taught to pupils reading in the vn.rions readers. Teachers in district schools . will be expc;ctecl to follow this outline of. work as fnr as prncti-ca.ble.
