Veterans Day always falls on Novem-ber 11th – the day that formally ended the hostilities of World War I. It’s the day set aside to honor and thank all who have served in the military for the United States for their contributions, for their sacrifices ... for our freedom. With VFW Veterans Day services this year scheduled on 11/11/11 at 11, this issue seemed destined to focus on veterans. And so this November issue is our Giving Thanks to Veterans issue.

Our Canyon Lake Community profile this month is Wes Gar-nett.... and family. It was his inspiration to start “Operation Float A Soldier” (OFAS) to give Wounded Warriors from BAMC (Brooke Army Medical Center) a break from the rigors of rehab and the op-portunity to enjoy a day on the lake with their families – something so many of us take for granted.

Wes and co-founder Seth Warnick started plans right away. Most of the soldiers they serve have very serious wounds – from missing limbs to major burns but all were wounded in the line of duty. With the help of many volunteers, OFAS events have grown from serving the original ten in 2005 to usually serving well over 100 attendees – every other weekend from July through September. The ministry is designed to provide these soldiers and their families a day of fun, fishing, floating and fellowship in their grueling uphill “battle” back to normalcy. There is a long road of healing ahead for these young warriors so successes must be counted one day at a time.

Growth of OFAS has stretched supplies; the nonprofit needs ev-erything from folding chairs to canopies or tents, watershoes and life jackets in all sizes to watercraft of all kinds. It’s okay if used or light repair is needed, if complete and serviceable.

“We aren’t shy,” Wes says, “we need a 75-90HP outboard motor for one of the boats – if you know of a good deal on one or have one to donate.”

Although a civilian effort of mostly borrowed boats and all vol-unteers, OFAS organizes the event with the expertise of a military operation to ensure a safe and positive experience for all. Mission accomplished .. for the day ... one step at a time.

Herb Norton wrote that EMS saved the life of his wife Dora. “Most folks don’t let the fine professional people who work for 911 and the EMS [know] how much they are appreciated,” he said. He wanted to thank EMS publicly to let them know how very grateful he is for their quick arrival and their skills. We join him in expressing gratitude for this critical level of care.

Stem cells have had a lot of press over the last decade, some good and some bad. Most conversations center around where they are sourced from (cord blood, fetuses, etc.) but the potential for stem cells to improve the health of human tissue remains high. Stem cells are not always sourced from humans; animals can also be donors and more recently plants. Stem

cell use for the repair and rejuvenation of tissues and organs are be-coming a major feature in cosmetic medicine as well.

Osmosis’ StemFactor benefits from stem cell technology in a dif-ferent way because actual stem cells in a bottle aren’t used. Instead a combination of stem cells (IPS and Mesenchymal) and fibroblast cells that feed and nourish are used to stimulate the production of growth factors. Human stem cells and fibroblasts make over 150 dif-ferent growth factors that are naturally found in your skin.

As we get older, the number of growth factors declines which af-fects new cell formation, skin nutrition and immune repair activity, all of which are critical to keeping our skin young. Osmosis, the only company offering this combination of cells, provides the greatest di-versity and potency in growth factors through Osmosis’ StemFac-tor’s liposomal delivery of these rejuvenating growth factors.

Other companies offer individual growth factors made by bacteria that distort healthy skin by over-emphasizing a particular response in the skin. This can lead to increases in cancer cell formation, but more often it simply reduces the skin’s ability to perform effective repair.

Many companies are touting plant stem cells to rejuvenate the skin. This does not make physiologic sense; the skin isn’t going to

convert from a foreign plant cell into human tissue of any kind. Ani-mal stem cells and/or DNA from animal sources also may be consid-ered as an intruder more than a savior.

Viability of the material is another issue with both animal and plant stem cells. All cells are very fragile and can’t withstand the stresses of harvesting, shipping and manufacturing. StemFactor sets itself apart because it communicates to our cells in the language they understand. The process of gathering growth factors has been perfected to maximize the stability and penetration while giving the skin the tools it needs in a balanced fashion. Benefits include helping acne, rosacea, aging and hyperpigmentation because it strengthens our skin’s immune system – which improves all skin conditions!

Wes Garnett had the inspiration for Operational Float A Soldier (OFAS), and with friend, Seth Warnick, co-founded the ministry to help wounded soldiers with a day out on the lake. Letty, Wes’ wife of 15 years, and their two sons Wyatt, 12, and Sterling, 14, have been hands-on going full speed ahead since OFAS’s inception in 2005. As a family mission, they spend every other weekend immersed in the program and a lot of the remaining time preparing for the next one.

Wes isn’t in the military but it’s hard to tell that by talking to him. Wes is a one-tour Navy veteran, but his conversation is peppered with military jargon reflecting the past and present influences that surround his daily life. Wes is a Microsoft Systems Administrator for the Department of Defense, a contractor who has worked at Ran-dolph Air Force base for seven years and relocating soon to Ft. Sam.

Wes grew up as a “brat,” he says, with his dad serving in four branches of the military over 40 years. (His sister was the first person born in an airplane, with their mother in route to a Hawaiian hospi-tal via a cargo plane.) He is “the baby” to four older sisters.

Wes worked as a Fire & Security Service Manager while earning an Associates Degree in Electronics from A&M, and later worked with Seth setting up computer systems. He accumulated a diverse skills set in IT communications and security and qualified to be a contractor for the DoD. In 2004, Wes was “stationed” in Kuwait next to a mobile MASH unit, passing the mortuary evacuation point dai-ly where soldiers killed in action were prepped for transport “home.”

Wes said, “I would pass by these young men on a slab. It was very sad. The sacrifices being made ... tugged at my heart every time.” Yearning to show his gratitude and appreciation for their sacrifice, Wes returned knowing he had to do something—but not what or how. When self talk starts in his head, he often turns to prayer and then waits for the answer to come as he did with that question.

In the Spring 2005, Wes was given a pontoon boat with a rotted deck that he rebuilt. He put up the side rail and started on the front one. Wes explained, “The voice inside my head said clearly, ‘Don’t put that front rail up, it won’t be wheelchair accessible for the guys at BAMC.’ A phenomenal feeling rolled over me.” He arches his back in motion to demonstrate its physical effect, and said, “and I knew what I could do.” He and Seth immediately set up an all day fishing trip boating ten guys over to the “beach head” of an island in the lake

and served briskets too—and OFAS was born. After just a few trips, Seth brought one volunteer—and the gates to growth were opened.

OFAS now has outings twice a month from June through Sep-tember scheduled by the Corp of Engineers at Canyon Park, eas-ily accessible for the BAMC bus of soldiers and OFAS’s setup and breakdown. One day this summer brought out nearly 150 wounded soldiers, family members, and volunteers. With those numbers, keeping everyone safe, content ... and on time, requires organiza-tion—military style.

“There’s more than just soldiers now; having your loved ones around is an integral part of a healing ministry,” Wes explains. After set up and a pause for prayer for everyone’s safe return, the boat-ing, skiing, tubing, knee boarding, waverunning, kayaking, fishing, swimming or relaxation begins.

Wes elaborates, “We re-con the location, set up the beach areas with canopies, chairs and tables, get the inflatable island and tram-polines in place... Using standard operating procedure is a necessity logistically. Everyone is regimented.” (They know their roles and in what order.) “Lunch is on time at noon. It’s a precise drill and we are 100% in place. Everything’s coordinated... The boys work the beach; the kids are an integral part of the organization.” Mature volunteers chuckle to hear 12-year-old Wyatt, instructing those much older.

Volunteers with knowledge OFAS needs show up and depend-ably—EMS, a deputy ... and so on.

“God sent a boat coordinator to our ministry,” Wes says light-heartedly, “named Dee Dee Skut and her husband Seth.” She keeps OFAS certified to Coast Guard requirements. They had 30 extra sol-diers one weekend and more boats arrived as needed. Dee Dee seg-regates boats for fishing, skiing and pleasure cruising—sometimes as many as nine boats. Volunteers who bring their personal jet ski for the guests help—but there’s always a long line waiting for them.

Wes and Seth set up OFAS to show the Wounded Warriors how grateful they are for the young soldiers’ sacrifice, injuries they will often endure for a lifetime. But giving back often works both ways. There are undoubtably hundreds of Wounded Warriors deeply grateful for those family days on the lake—their service appreci-ated—grateful for the ministry of Wes Garnett and Seth Warnick and their dedicated, and regimented, group of volunteers who care.

~ NOVEMBER 2011 ~Canyon Lake Views Magazine

Don King of Canyon Lake Marina has been a blessing, reserving jetskis for soldiers around regular rental customers, finding OFAS storage close by and much more. With monies gifted by a year-long employee fundraiser at IBC Banks in 2009, OFAS purchased four waverunners, the runaway favorite activity for WIA soldiers—but the line always stays long. OFAS hopes to find donors who may have used jet skis they no longer want. OFAS will gladly display banners to give appropriate credit for business donations. If you have a used jet ski you don’t need, boat motors, trailers for pontoon boats, jet skis, usable life jackets all sizes, wearable water shoes all sizes, floats that hold air, folding chairs, ski boats (did I say jet skis?) to grocery gift cards; OFAS needs to be ready for all who sign up. In early January, OFAS will start reserving dates for sponsoring organizations who want to “adopt a weekend” to provide the side dishes and desserts for lunch and 10-20 volunteers. Individual volunteers are needed too – an hour or two will do. (Bring your jet ski to share too!) If you want to help in any way, call Wes at 210-865-5646 or visit www.floatasoldier.org. Float A Soldier is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

The recent fire in Bastrop has re-ally opened my eyes to how quickly a wildfire can start and how quickly it can spread. What would you take out of your house if a fire started up and you had just a few minutes to gather your things? My parents live in the Lost Pines in Bastrop and were forced to evacuate their home during the fire and I can say that they were probably one of the only ones that were completely prepared for such a thing. With this terrible drought we are in, they have been worried for months that a fire would start up if the wind ever picked up, so they made a great effort to be ready.

Back in April, they packed up all of their pictures, valuables, medicine and necessities in suitcases and put them by the back door so all they would have to do is grab them and go. They also made sure they had a pet carrier for each animal along with all of the pet supplies they would need if they had to leave. They made sure all of their important papers including their insurance policy were in a fire proof safe and they read their policy to make sure they had the coverage they would need.

Luckily, the firemen were able to get the fire put out three blocks from their house and they did not lose anything. The only claim that they have filed is under a coverage called Loss of Use. This cover-age is meant to help you with those extra expenses if you have to evacuate your home. I will explain more about this coverage next month. Check your insurance to make sure this coverage is included in your policy while you are checking it to confirm you know just what coverage it does include.

Belongings like jewelry, guns, furs, fine arts, collections, etc. have a very small limit of coverage under your homeowner’s policy. It’s a good idea to make sure you have added coverage for these items and others you might have acquired since you purchased your policy.

Now is a much better time to review your policy for adequate coverage than after a catastrophe hits. Dallas Perry

Multi-grade viscosity: Give thanks to a new age of oil technology

by Bill GoetzAs a recap, oil viscosity refers to how

easily oil pours at a specified temperature. Thinner oils have a water-like consistency and pour more easily at low temperatures than heavier, thicker oils that have a more honey-like consistency. Thin is good for cold weather and engine startup protection, while thick is better for maintaining film

strength and oil pressure at high operating temperatures. This abil-ity to combine the characteristics of various weights of oils allowed motorists to eliminate the need to change oils as conditions changed, as we often did when only single weight oils were available.

This multi-grade technology was made possible by the develop-ment of Viscosity Improving (VI) additives for oil base stocks which combat the oils tendency to become thin at high temperatures. Other important additives include, but are not limited to, detergents that neutralize oil impurities that could form sludge deposits; friction modifiers that help increase fuel efficiency; corrosion inhibiting addi-tives that retard oxidation; seal conditioners that cause seals to swell and reduce leakage; and antioxidant additives that retard decomposi-tion of oil base stock.

Viscosity ratings usually range from 0 to 50, with the “W” in the middle denoting the “winter” grade of oil. Therefore, oil with the rating of 5W30 means that your vehicle is protected in cold weather start-ups with a thinner oil (5W), as well as at operating temperature with a heavier oil (30 weight). Various makes, models and engines re-quire different weights. Manufacturers’ recommendations range from 0W20 all the way up to 15W40 for heavy diesel engines, with the most common being 5W20 and 5W30. Always check your vehicle manufacturers’ recommended oil for best overall performance and gas mileage.

Will it hurt to use a different oil than what is recommended? Usu-ally it will not have a negative impact on your engine. However, al-ways consider if the vehicle is under warranty, the mileage, and your driving conditions. Some manufacturers do not back the warranty if the proper oil is not used during that period. It is important to note that increasing viscosity too much will increase drag and friction, which can decrease horsepower and gas mileage. Always ask your service provider for their specific recommendations.

Recent instances of intestate deaths (dying without a Will) led me to rerun this column again to remind you of the con-sequences for your family in both trouble and money – if you die without a Will. I am amazed that it continues, and is so com-mon. Why add this hardship to your family’s grief?

Just like with your health, it is far cheaper to avoid legal prob-lems than find a cure. Far too may times my clients come to me when they’re already sick. What I mean is they already have a legal problem. Some examples would be people dying without a Will, a large business or personal transaction based on a verbal agreement, and talking with law enforcement when accused or charged with a criminal offense. In each and every instance, you should know that preventing is less expensive than fixing a legal problem.

Dying either intestate (without a Will), or without a self proven Will is very common. Probating a dependent administration or an estate with no Will is very costly when compared to the cost of getting a Will done and probating an estate by your appointed Inde-pendent Executor. Funds your family needs to use may be tied up. It actually costs about five times as much money, not to mention the time and aggravation your heirs must endure.

In my practice, I’ve handled many contract disputes. In one in-stance, a contract for over six figures was done on a hand shake. Af-ter a two week trial, my client had a jury verdict in their favor. Some two years later, the case is still with the Texas Court of Appeals. It is likely there would have been no dispute or amnesia if the parties had been represented when making their deal.

You have the right to remain silent truly is a right and should be exercised. The very second you feel as though law enforcement is accusing you of something, you should exercise that right or you will lose it. It is very fundamental, and if you listen to the words “you have the right to remain silent, you have the right to be repre-sented by an attorney...can and will be used against you in a court of law,” means just that. Often your own words can be used against you when you do not know the legal ramifications of what you speak.

Seeing your lawyer before you have a problem is just like seeing a doctor before you’re sick. It just makes sense.

Not having a Will before you die simply makes no sense at all.

Everyone should have a massage at least once a month. But in today’s economic climate, that may not be possible for many people. Family budget cuts often start by striking out the “extras” in life. As service provid-

ers, massage therapists also have family budgets and cost cut-ting like everyone else. We understand the situation completely! But in all seriousness, the massage should not be cut so fast. The economic crisis today can be nail biting stressful that can create an even greater need. Subjecting our bodies to constant stress is unnatural and can eventually leads to other serious health is-sues.

Many of today’s medical syndromes and diseases are often exacerbated by stress. We are all familiar with headaches, mi-graines and hypertension – which do benefit from a massage. But there are other syndromes that don’t get the attention they need. For example, Myasthenia Gravis is a weakness in muscles that is characterized by chronic fatigue; muscle exertion, repeti-tive movements and stress exacerbate the condition. A mas-sage may help slow down muscle atrophy, and should include stretching to relieve joint stiffness.

Fibromyalgia, another syndrome, is pain in the muscle fibers and connective tissue. Because this pain comes and goes, it is often hard to explain and frustrating for the patient. Physical and emotional traumas –and stress– induce painful flare-ups. A gentle, relaxing fully body massage eases pain and helps with toxic flushing more and more with each massage.

If you or someone you know suffers daily from pain, mas-sage therapy is vital to overall well-being. Setting a regular massage schedule extended over a period of time will provide relief for chronic sufferers.

Purchasing a package of massages can reduce the cost of each massage, as compared to an individual one-time purchase price, or request a customized package and treatment plan tai-lored to your specific needs.Theresa Castaneda, LMT #033592, owner of Back-n-Shape, and Amy Garland, LMT #040163, owner of Canyon Lake Massage, are Licensed Massage Therapists who share space in Hancock Professional Suites, one block north of the main entrance to Silverleaf Resort. Both offer massage treatment packages for a reduced cost. Visit backnshape.com and can-yonlakemassage.com for more information about both or call 830-522-0797.

Now that the holiday season is upon us, The Canyon Lake Area Chamber of Commerce would like to wish our community a safe, prosperous and joy-ful holiday season. We’re always here to make your business better. But as a member of the community, we would like to remind everyone of the reasons why you should buy local and support everyone in the community.

Did you know, when you buy local you support yourself? Sev-eral studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally-owned business, a significant amount of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses – local businesses that are owned by people who live in this community. These busi-ness owners are less likely to leave, and are more likely to invest in the community’s future. Small local businesses are also considered the largest employer in our community.

Buying local also keeps our community unique. Where we shop, where we eat and have fun – all of it makes our community home. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of the Canyon Lake area. Local businesses often hire peo-ple with a better understanding of the products they are selling and take more time to get to know customers.

You also have local support with promoting or finding a business in our area. The Chamber assists you with exposure, not just to local residents, but to our many visitors that pass through the Visitor’s Center and who visit our website at www.CanyonLakeChamber.com. The Chamber is also involved in its own venues for promo-tions, such as the monthly emails on upcoming events and happen-ings around our area, Business After-Hours Mixers held monthly, Ribbon Cutting Ceremonies and much more. The Chamber has also developed custom brochures displaying our members in associated groups. These custom brochures are handed out by the hundreds and are also available online.

Thinking local first is always a smart idea. Buying local can only better our community. Being local is being part of a one-of-a-kind community that has a unique sense of pride that only someone from the Canyon Lake Area could understand. Becoming a part of The Canyon Lake Area Chamber of Commerce will get you involved in this great community we call home.

Many dentists use the term “Minimally In-vasive Dentistry”. Its meanings are diverse.

For some, it means taking away as little tooth structure as pos-sible after diagnosis using tiny drill burs.

A critical broader definition starts with correct, early diagno-sis. Sometimes a tooth pit is just the right width to catch a dental explorer, so is incorrectly diagnosed as decay. More often, decay is missed. Because of the way teeth form, tiny defects can lead to decay that is difficult to detect using standard x-rays and a dental explorer. It is estimated these techniques used alone are correct only 25% of the time.

X-rays can only detect decay that is 2-3 millimeters deep into the second layer of a tooth – the part that underlies the enamel. Decay is fairly extensive at this point. Air abrasion combined with lasers can help explore questionable lesions. When early di-agnosis and air abrasion is combined with ozone (discussed in a prior article), tooth structure and function is preserved.

Traditional filling designs used since the Civil War require a drill and a traditional flat-bottom design with sharp angles. These sharp angles concentrate chewing and clenching forces. Almost certainly a tooth will eventually break along these pre-deter-mined lines. Drill burs remove tooth structure indiscriminately. Microscopically, they shatter our precious enamel and dentin. These tiny cracks then propagate throughout a tooth much like a windshield crack will.

Air abrasion has many benefits. It discriminately removes un-sound tooth structure and avoids the cracks in teeth initiated by dental drills and can even help clean up the cracks formed around old mercury fillings. Additionally, the particle flow creates smooth, rounded internal transitions within the tooth preparation, avoiding many of the stresses created by traditional designs.

Economy is built into this new dentistry. Regular visits and early intervention help people avoid the traditional dental repair-replace-repair cycle, estimated to be at least $2187 in services by age 79 per initial cavity in 2003 dollars.

As many of you likely know, there have been a few news stories in San Antonio

about a new virus called “canine influenza”. It has actually ex-isted in the U.S. for multiple years, but the first cases of it have just been confirmed in San Antonio over the past few months.

So…. what is it? Well, it’s pretty much what it sounds like – dog flu. Many of you are likely aware of and already have your dogs vaccinated against upper respiratory tract infections with the bordetella vaccine (aka “kennel cough”). Canine influenza is the more severe cousin to kennel cough. I treated 3 dogs in the DFW area for influenza last year. They all had a lot of thick, yellow/green nasal discharge, sneezing, sometimes a fever, and they all looked and felt pretty bad.

Dogs with influenza usually need to be hospitalized with IV fluids and antibiotics for several days. The good news is that if these dogs are treated by a veterinarian, the virus is rarely life-threatening. Oh, and don’t worry, this a dog specific strain of influenza meaning that you cannot give your dog the flu and they cannot give it to you either.

So… how do you prevent it? Luckily there is a canine influ-enza vaccine available at your veterinary clinic. Some boarding facilities and veterinary clinics in San Antonio are now making it mandatory that all of their clients get the influenza vaccine for their dogs. While that may not be a bad idea, I personally don’t believe that every dog needs this vaccine. We usually just vaccinate the “at risk” dogs. These include dogs that are more socially active and around a lot of other dogs. Dogs who go to dog parks, groomers, dog shows, boarded often, etc. If your dog only leaves the house to go the vet once a year, then I would say you can probably hold off on this vaccine.

Luckily, we have not seen any confirmed cases yet in Can-yon Lake. If you have any further questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to ask your veterinarian, that’s what we are here for!

There seems to be some confusion out there as to what role chlorine, or the lack thereof, plays in the workings of an aerobic septic system. I’ll try to clear it up.

Your septic system is made up of three chambers: the solids chamber, the aeration chamber, and the disinfection/dispersal chamber. The solids chamber holds the waste from the home and separates the water from the solids. It allows most of the water and some of the solids to move into the aeration chamber. This slow introduction of solids into the aeration tank allows the natural bacteria in the aeration tank to feed on the solids from the solids tank. Oxygen from the air compressor aids the growth of these bacteria while removing the smell from the water.

Anything that kills germs (bleach, antibacterial soaps, drain cleaners, etc.) should not be introduced into the first two cham-bers of the system. It is a living thing. It’s healthy and it’s why you don’t have to pump the system out every year. The break-down of the solids by the bacteria is the very reason the system functions properly. Kill the bacteria and you “kill the system”.

However, we’re human and we need to use these things to clean our clothes, our homes, and ourselves. The point is to use as little bleach or drain cleaner as possible; limiting the harm-ful effects they have on the system. Limited chlorine in the first two chambers lets the system work well and save you money on pump-outs.

As much as we want to limit the chlorine in the first two chambers it must be added between the aeration chamber and the disinfection/dispersal chamber. It disinfects the water sprayed out on the yard. Without it, you’re just spewing untreat-ed sewage. The chlorine is introduced into the spray (dispersal) tank by chlorine tablets or chlorine added to the tube located just upstream from the spray tank.

The rule on chlorine is: none in chambers 1 and 2, and load up on it in chamber 3. No more than three tablets at a time in the tube. Check at least monthly to determine your normal usage and fill regularly. If you can’t find the tube or reservoir, ask your maintainer who should also sell the tablets you’ll need to keep chamber 3 working properly until your next regular service call.

Halloween and ... missing things

by Terry Schroller

Reset your mental clocks to a week or so ago and consider this...

Halloween is a harvest time celebra-tion after a hard season of planting, growing and reaping what you’ve sown. What’s that? You say you haven’t reaped or sown s!!t ‘cause it’s all burnt to a crisp. I know what you’re saying. Kind of like when you first got married and the cook was still learning how. The meals started out with good ingredients, and quickly became a smoke and fire briquette sort of shaped like food. Ah, the good ole days. That’s why we all stayed thin for so long. We cooked some nasty barely edible stuff. Then when we got the hang of it, along came the pounds and fitness clubs.

Well, the ole Bugman is here to tell ya. Yes!, you do have something to celebrate. It’s not so much the things you reaped as much as it is the “missing things.” What?! I know you’re convinced the bug spray has finally gotten to me right? OK. Think about what we have not had that has made life a lit-tle easier for you. Like almost no webworms on your pecan trees. Fire ants are non-existent unless of course your yard is glowing green (we are in a drought, right?). Fleas are in very low numbers unless of course your yard is glowing.... Never mind. What about termites? Where have they gone? No ka-tydids serenading us at night and then fowling our porches, patios and decks the next day! Hoppers evidently like green stuff better than dead brown weeds so their numbers are low. Mosquitoes! Gone, unless of course your yard is glowing... Never mind.

Here’s a major non event especially if you have teenagers cause these things follow them around. Think trash. Teenag-ers produce a lot of it. From what I’ve seen they like to live in it too. I’m talking about flies, man, flies!

I can go on but I’ve depressed myself thinking about lost revenue. Oh, it’s OK. They’re all still around. They’re just waiting for the right moment to jump out and yell “Trick or Treat!?!”

Happy Holiday Season ya’ll, and enjoy your “missing things.”

Fall is here. Winter and the holidays are on the way. With the changing of the seasons, our senses are aware of the crispness in the air, the sweet aromas, the warmth of a fire and the colors that are special to this time of year. A trip to your local hardware store can help you to enhance this atmosphere in your home.

Starting outside, place a seasonal flag in your garden or yard to welcome your guests. These flags can be colorful and decorative, or they can make a statement as to which college or pro team you support. A more natural approach would be to add some festive mums to your garden or in pots on your porch or deck.

Take the chill out of the evenings by placing a portable fire pit on your patio. Friends will enjoy gathering around the warm glow of a wood fire as holiday plans are dis-cussed.

For decorating outdoors or indoors, there is a good variety of ceramic and poly resin pumpkins and gourds available. Gourds can add a touch of subtle color to your garden, porch, table centerpiece, or add interest to a dis-play on your mantle or hearth.

Continuing the senses of the season indoors, a soft, fall-colored throw adds a cozy feeling to any sofa or favorite chair. Hanging a tapestry gives a rich, warm, textured feel to an otherwise bare wall.

The soft glow of candles only adds to the atmosphere of the season. Using scented candles can fill your home with the scent of fresh baked goods or any of a variety of wonderful smells. Diffusers are in great demand now as an alternative to candles and can produce a more subtle scent.

It’s always a great feeling to be home for the holidays. Enjoying the colors, smells and feel of the season only makes it better for you and your guests.

When considering carpet cleaning several methods are used including steam cleaning, shampooing, bonnet cleaning or dry extrac-tions just to name a few.

The most common method of cleaning is often called hot water extraction, sometimes called steam cleaning, which is the method recommended by most major carpet manufacturers. The disadvan-tages of steam cleaning are longer drying times, and the equipment used must be properly maintained with skilled operators. Stains sometimes wick back and reappear after carpet is dry.

The carpet shampoo theory is to generate a lot of foam in the carpet, allow the foam to dry and absorb soil, then vacuum up the residue and soil. Because shampoos are poor detergents, they simply bury the dirt and dry to a sticky residue causing resoiling. The rotary shampoo method uses an ordinary rotary floor machine with a brush that whips the detergent into a foam. Most carpet mills discourage the use of flat rotary brushes on carpets because damage can occur.

An effective carpet cleaning method using absorbent cleaners is often called dry cleaning since virtually no water is used. In this method a dry absorbent compound containing small amounts of wa-ter solvent and detergent is sprinkled over the carpet and worked on by hand or machine. The cleaning compound attracts and absorbs the dislodged soil and is vacuumed away. This dry cleaning system has the advantages of no drying time, no sticky residual left in the carpet to cause re-soiling. No high pressure water driving the stains to the bottom of the carpet only to wick back. Because it’s a dry method, carpets can be cleaned more often to maintain a better ap-pearance. Some products that fall into this category are Host, Cap-ture, Love My Carpet and Arm & Hammer.

The choice of a proper cleaning system is extremely important. Methods that leave residues and promote re-soiling defeat the pur-pose of cleaning. Inadequate extraction may leave the carpet too wet which can cause the carpet to need re-stretching. In summary steam cleaning is okay – if it’s professionally done with the proper equip-ment. As long as soil is not allowed to accumulate, dry cleaning with products like Host can be used by the homeowner with good results to keep the carpet dry with little worry of damage to your carpet.

With so many different water treat-ment systems on the market, determining the right equipment for your water can quickly become confusing to the average

homeowner. Most homeowners are well aware that a water soft-ener is necessary; however, many will admit that these systems are foreign to them. A softener is considered point of entry treat-ment, meaning that the hardness minerals are physically removed from the water as it flows through the unit and out to the house.

Water softeners are a proven method of eliminating scale, and have been in use for decades. While there may be some promising developments in salt-free alternatives, many current marketing campaigns seek to capitalize on the recent green movement, and on myths surrounding salt based softening by misrepresenting facts or overstating figures. Many of these products are simply being re-introduced via multi-level marketing with catchy new names. What many do not realize is that recent advances in the industry have resulted in softening systems which are far more salt-efficient and user-friendly than ever.

Water softener pricing and quality can vary greatly. There are units available from $500 all the way up to $5,000. How are you to know what’s best for you and your family? FYI, the low-est priced units will have to be installed by a professional which adds to the final cost. There’s also the question of who will make repairs when they become necessary; a dependable local service tech you trust is an asset. On the other end, the highest priced units from franchises are often so proprietary that parts and ser-vice come at a premium. The goal is to find a reliable treatment system at a reasonable price for what you need that can last for many years.

Unless you are a serious do-it-yourselfer, it’s probably in your best interest to purchase a unit from a licensed independent dealer. They can properly size the softener to best fit your needs, install the unit in a professional manner, and should remain avail-able after the installation in order to make necessary adjustments to the equipment. A simple water analysis and a few well-aimed questions will determine the proper softener for your home.

For those of you who don’t know what exactly HDMI stands for and what it does,

It is High-Definition Multimedia Interface and it is an audio video cable that connects between Blu-ray players, HDTV’s, and sur-round sound, and lets you experience the highest quality HDTV and the highest quality surround sound through the one cable.

You can now connect one cable from the satellite/cable box, one cable from the Blu-ray player, one cable from the surround sound and one cable from the TV. I know you’re sorry to see the rat’s nest of cables go away, but it will come with a price for some.

HDMI is a two way protocol meaning your devices like TV and DVD player talk to each other – they know who they are and how much voltage is needed and what setting they work best at as well as knowing when there is an un copy-protected device and it will then shut off the video. One point I’d like to make clear is we don’t have a choice. HDMI is mandated on us to help prevent copy protection.

With HDMI we are seeing some issues which include a black screen with sound, sound and no picture, black and white sparkles in the picture or a flashing screen. I have sat through many in-dustry lectures on why and how to prevent these problems – un-fortunately many times, there’s no one cause for these issues to occur. It’s actually many small things that cause just enough loss to generate an issue. It does take a very skilled technician to di-agnose these issues; good luck getting the product manufacturer to admit the problem lies with in the HDMI. Everyone blames everyone else.

Simply put, HDMI has a lot to do with timings: if things don’t arrive at the exact same time, even if delayed only by a millisec-ond, problems can occur. Every year they release a new spec or version number so it may require changing your cable every time you change a device.

Keep in mind, this summer your new 1080P HDTV will be obsolete with a new TV that will be up to four times better than the best TV we have today, but that’s another column!

Each November and early December, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) asks for help to provide holiday gifts for abused and neglected children – a wonderful opportunity to extend the giv-ing tradition to children in need! Any gift item will be appreciated.

CASA is also asking organizations, employee groups, churches and individuals to participate. During the first week of November, CASA will provide you with first names, ages and gift ideas for children on a small star-shaped paper that can be displayed on a Christmas tree or another visible area. Members can select a name, purchase a gift and drop it off (with the star attached for identifica-tion) at your organization. CASA staff will collect the gifts in early December and our volunteers will distribute them to the children.

But CASA primarily needs volunteer advocates to serve the children. CASA ensures that these children receive personal advo-cacy from a volunteer who is thoroughly screened, professionally trained and supervised every step of the way for an entire year. That volunteer will be a constant presence in the child’s life for a full year (and sometimes longer), working until the child is in a safe and permanent home. For information on how you can help, call 830-626-2272.

Over eighty girls now live at the New Life Children’s Center near the Rec Center – most of them have a history of abuse or ne-glect – many severe. There’s no money for frivilous traditions such as birthdays or Christmas, so the annual fundraiser is underway to ensure each girl receives a gift.

The girls make a wish list and volunteers from a group of wom-en in business adopt an un-named girl to shop for – spending about $50 for each. The group also cooks an old-fashioned Christmas meal from scratch in mid-December for a celebration of gift-giv-ing with Santa – something many of them have never experienced. If you would like to participate or donate, call Bridget McDougall at 830-964-3127.
