We use only top quality American pre-primed cotton and European linen, stapled at the back using stainless steel staples. Different painting styles suit different fabrics. Painting in heavy layers requires a coarse fabric, while detailed work is more suited to a fine weave. Medium surfaced canvas suits most painting styles. The surface can also be affected by additional priming and use of pastes (see our brochure “All about the Surface”).

Custom Stretched Canvas

For the really professional canvas support of the highest quality, we can stretch canvas to order for you. Our Custom Stretched Canvas provides many benefits that will tangibly improve your painting.

With our Custom Stretched Canvas, you can choose the exact size you require, the surface – fine, medium or rough, and the format (portrait or landscape), which determines where the folds are placed. Our professional canvas stretching team will have it freshly and tightly stretched on our premises for you. We can even stretch linen back-to-front if you want to keep the natural fabric look without the problems of using raw fabric (which tends to go saggy). We can even organise transport for those canvases too big for your car or van.

We use North American Cedar - stable yet lightweight – for our stretcher bars, with a special 180 degree round lip for strength and to prevent cracking, and we attach the canvas at the back of the frame using stainless-steel staples (no ugly rust marks!), leaving the sides staple-free. The obvious benefits of Custom Stretched Canvas over “ready-mades” are:

Over a dozen different surfaces to suit the look you’re wanting – fine, medium, or coarse, either primed or un-primed, cotton or linen, of best quality fabric;

Cedar stretcher bars, lighter & more stable, and an extra strong profile for perfect edges;

over 1,400 different sizes (without counting our special in-between sizes!);

a tighter, evenly tensioned surface that is able to be easily re-tensioned;

corners can be folded for either portrait or landscape formats;

in the event of an unsuccessful painting, the stretchers bars can be re-used.

We use extra-thick bracing (1.5 times thickness) to avoid bowing for sizes: 155 x 205cm and larger; 160 x 175cm and larger; 165 x 175cm and larger; 170 x 175cm and larger; 180 180cm and larger.

Tondo (Round) Canvas

These professional tondos are made with the same 35mm profile as our Cedar Stretcher Bars, with 180 degree lip and bevelled away from the edge, and can be supplied either as a complete circular frame or with hand-primed linen stretched over them.

To make with no creases on the side of the frame, we stretch raw linen which is then primed on the frame, and to maintain satisfactory tension of the canvas, as the frames are not expandable, the process is quite involved. The canvas is wet-stretched, sized with two coats of Golden GAC100 front and back, double-primed using Golden Gesso, re-tensioned, sanded and primed twice more before a final re-stretching! All folds occur on the back of the tondo.

A circular canvas is known as a tondo. In Renaissance Italy, it originated as a 12 sided birthing tray, for bringing refreshments to women who had

just given birth, and afterwards hung on the wall to commemorate the event.

Pine Stretcher Bars & Bracing Kiln-dried & special cut

Kiln-dried pine stretchers offer a more economical frame for your stretched canvas. We also have our pine specially cut, to minimise movement in the wood over time.

These Heavy Duty 35x40mm stretchers feature the same 180 degree rounded edges (strong and less stress on canvas) and bevel as the Cedar Professional Stretchers, and bracing slots are provided for sizes 90cm and over.

Our Light Weight 20x35mm stretchers are cut with the same design features, though thinner, and are great for smaller works, where the thicker profile of the Heavy Duty makes the painting look too boxy. They also make very economical canvases!

Cedar Stretcher Bars & Bracing Professional Quality Cedar

Professional stretchers designed by us and produced in New Zealand from North American plantation Cedar. Cedar is lighter yet much more stable than commonly used pine, with much less tendency to warp, especially in changing atmospheric conditions.

The stretchers come in both 20x35mm Mini (good for smaller works) and 35x65mm Professional profiles, with 180 degree rounded edges (strong and less stress on canvas) and bevelled away from the canvas. Bracing slots are provided for all sizes over 100cm, and double bracing available for sizes over 150cm.

Custom sizes and 18x65mm profiles are also available on request.

For sizes 180cm square or near square and larger, we strongly recommend using extra-strength bracing, which is 50% thicker and 50% dearer than the listed price. This prevents bracing from bowing out the back of these large canvases. Extra-strength bracing can also be specially ordered for any size.

Linen is a preferred surface for many artists, as its unique weave is very receptive to paint and lends instant interest to the surface. Linen is more archivally sound that cotton canvas, and there is a nice synergy using colours made with flax (the linseed in oilpaint) on fabric made from flax fibre (linen). 1600 x 2000mm is the maximum size we are able to transport in a van. Larger sizes need to be transported in a truck. We have contact details for a professional art carrier if you need to arrange this.

Pro-Panel Artboard

MDF board offers a smooth, robust surface for painting, collage or mixed media works at a very economical price. These boards have a keyhole in the reverse for easy hanging.

Prior to painting, use Golden GAC100 to seal the front, back and sides to prevent wood movement and Support Induced Discolouration (S.I.D).

Alumi-Panels Aluminium Painting Panel

Alumi-Panel is made from two sheets of aluminium, one powder-coated, one plain metal, sandwiching a sheet of polyethylene (which provides better environmental stress resistance than if the sheet was solid aluminium).

To prepare either side for painting: sand using P600 wet & dry; apply one thin undiluted coat of Golden GAC200. The surface can then be painted on directly or be further prepared using your chosen primer or acrylic pastes.

To hang off wall screws, a strip on wood can be glued on the reverse, parallel with the ground. Why prime pre-primed canvas?

Priming a surface seals it, reduces the absorbability, fills the weave of fabrics, gives a purchase for the paint film, and acts as a reflector to bounce light back through the paint layers.

Pre-primed canvas can be painted on straight away, but factory-primed surfaces are usually primed by spraying, so the coat is thin and the weave is insufficiently filled. The primer is often of poor quality, too absorbent, doesn’t provide a good barrier, and is not particularly opaque. Yes, they could do a more thorough job, but it would drastically increase the price, and besides – they’ve done the hardest part.

The right side of this Expression Canvas has received an extra 3 coats of primer; the left has been left with just the factory priming. Notice how the extra priming has enabled the paint to be applied and wiped and resulted in brighter, more defined paintwork than on the factory priming, where the paint lacks definition and the weave is difficult to fill.

You can improve the surface hugely by applying two or more further coats of primer. By applying additional coats of primer, the initial paint film glides on without leaving “holes” where the primer shows through. Paint can be easily manipulated, enabling endless variations of mark-making and allowing you to develop your brush techniques. You can wipe back and soften. The colour intensity is heightened by having the substrate white as possible, to reflect light back through the paint layers - the brighter the ground, the brighter the paint films will appear. You also use a lot less paint.

Schmincke Primers Schmincke Size 500ml $ 56.00 For pre-sizing highly absorbent grounds, e.g. raw canvas and for preventing acid-migration between support and paint.

Primer 1 (absorbent) 500ml $ 59.99 1000ml $ 96.50 5000ml $ 272.00 (only $54.40 a litre!) The half-chalk Schmincke Primer 1 is fully flexible, and has the right degree of absorbency for the best film adhesion. Primer 1 also fills the weave quickly, leaves less brush strokes than acrylic gesso, and is more easily sanded. Most importantly, its silky smooth, soft white, plaster finish provides the idea surface for manipulating oilcolour, without over-use of mediums. Schmincke Primer needs to be diluted with water (10 – 30%) and applied with a gesso brush in several coats. Although relatively expensive compared with acrylic gesso, a litre of Schmincke Primer, thinned 10 – 15%, will cover 15 square metres. That’s enough for three coats on twenty 500x500mm canvases!

White Primer (absorbent) 1000ml $ 69.99 This is a more attractively priced version of Schmincke Primer 1, and has many of the same characteristics. It is also fully flexible, and has the right degree of absorbency for the best film adhesion. White Primer is less concentrated, so should be diluted no more than 10% with water, and is not so white are the Primer 1.
