The Rebuild’s resident Superhero pg6

There was a bit of excitement in our office recently We were awaiting the arrival of Flat Man. Guess it’s not just five year olds who get a little excited over superheroes. Who am I kidding, it wasn’t even just the ladies who were looking forward to the visit! The lycra-clad crusader didn’t disappoint, bursting into the Leslie Hills Drive office with as much discretion as a superhero in a sign written Nissan Cube ‘Flatmobile’ could muster. He had to move his mask a little to drink his cup of tea – in a very masculine super hero kind of way – but we’re still in the dark as much as you as to the identity of the caped crusader. And, just like you, we support his cause too. There’s a bunch of other exciting stuff we’re supporting this month; the rebuild and renovation of Canterbury’s iconic Riccarton House, Christchurch creator Charles Luney’s life to be immortalised in film and a student’s stormwater system which could save companies thousands. The creator of our famed Cardboard Cathedral has scored himself a pretty prestigious prize, our favourite accountant Jamie Tulloch shows us how we can be profitable yet quietly going broke and we start the first of our commercial Q&A series – this issue speaking with business coach Dave Sewell about how to improve your profit and manage your cashow. We’ve checked out a couple of new developments for you and got the goss on a new healthy home experiment which could go nationwide. But if there’s anything you think we should be covering in the future, feel free to drop me a line. I’m always keen to hear your thoughts. So, in the words of Flat Man, be a bruv, share the luv!

-Flatmanhile Flat Man’s powers aren’t

Wfictional or supernatural, they represent an extraordinary

dedication to the future of our city. If you haven’t heard of him, you could

be forgiven; much of his work is done in the calm dead of night, delivering food packages to the doors of unsuspecting ats. At least that’s where the story began.

“There was a bad vibe in Christchurch after the earthquakes,” Flat Man says. “I wanted to do something exciting and new, create some confusion and bring something interesting to people’s lives.”

What started as a one-off evening of late night deliveries soon took off. Suddenly he had 200 Facebook friend requests and requests for motivational talks at schools. Stadium Cars rang, offering to cover his printing costs and the use of a vehicle. Countdown is now on board providing vouchers for the cause and Hubbards has just added several hundred boxes of cereal to the kitty.

“It’s been an incredible journey,” he

says. “I have been absolutely blown away by the generosity of people.”

But there’s a Kiwi family which has been equally blown away by Flat Man’s actions too. When the caped crusader heard about Phoenix, a five-year-old boy

from Kawakawa, who wears superhero costumes to distract him from a severe case of eczema, he decided to extend him a bit of Cantabrian generosity.

Flat Man raised $1700 through crowdfunding site givealittle.co.nz, more than $700 over his target and used the funds to bring Phoenix and his

grandmother to our super city for three days. For three days Phoenix had the time of his life and made a lifelong friend.

Flat Man’s working full time in regular clothing these days and funds the bulk of the venture from his own pocket, but one day he dreams of being in a position to become a full time super hero. “It really puts your own life into perspective. When it’s a 30 degree day and I’m pulling on a full suit of lycra, I’ve just got to remember what this is all about and that’s the children.

“Some of these families have faced some of the biggest hurdles we could even imagine and to see the smiles on their faces and know just how much this means to them… I’m incredibly blessed to have the opportunity to help like this.”

While the striking new sign writing makes Reno4U stand out physically, it’s the product

offering which truly sets the company apart in a crowded marketplace. “We’re aiming to be a one stop shop for kitchen, bathroom and appliance design,” explains retail manager Vicki

Competitive kitchen and bathroom design

Taylor. “We bundle everything together

including the appliances in a very competitive package.”

Traditionally an expensive and stressful area, Reno4U has ipped the traditional kitchen and bathroom design model on its head. “We’ve designed the

business to offer a seamless experience, we want to take the hassle and stress out of designing your new kitchen or bathroom, with competitive pricing and outstanding service. We can design kitchens from $3000 to $70,000 – just bring us your specs and budget and we can design around them.

“Quite simply, we make it easy and enjoyable to purchase and plan your kitchen and bathroom for your home.”

Although the name is new to Christchurch, the company has more than 20 years of experience within the kitchen

design market. This strong history in the market

enables the backup and experience of the company’s strong inter-industry relationships with companies such as Aurora Kitchens and Trenz, which have both been around for more than 20 years.

Nestled comfortably behind the Caltex service station on the corner of Blenheim Road and Matipo Street, Reno4U has burst onto the kitchen and bathroom build and rebuild scene with a strong product offering, wide range of reputable brands and excellent customer service.

These relationships enable a product offering which includes some of the most reputable appliance brands including Eisno, Aurora Kitchens, Haier, Fisher & Paykel and Trenz for bathrooms and fittings, so you have the peace of mind of substantial back up and support available.

“All our products are made in New Zealand, all come with our 10 year warranty and we can deliver your new kitchen just four weeks after confirmation, as opposed to the standard 6-12,” Vicki says

With ample car parking available on site, there’s no reason not to call in at the stylish new showroom on Blenheim Road to discuss the options and see the product offering for yourself.

Escalating demand for quality joinery

The company is already aware of escalating demand. As a market leader in the manufacture of

architectural and residential windows and doors since 1987, the company has ensured it has good people and good systems in place to maintain the exemplary level of service that meets its clients’ every need, no matter how big or small. Canterbury Aluminium is currently supplying a number of large construction companies with product

for important new commercial buildings, as well as supplying residential new builds, repairs and renovations.

Canterbury Aluminium’s windows look out from many parts of Christchurch onto the city’s changing skyline. Being involved in the rebuild of the city and working alongside key contractors to achieve outstanding results is at the heart of our company ethic.

Canterbury Aluminium specialises in all aspects of aluminium joinery with a wide range of styles and colours to suit any lifestyle or requirement. They offer new technology advances not only in glass, hardware and colour options, but also contribute to new and versatile designs that help create a warm and comfortable environment. The latest from the company is the new thermally-broken designer series. Separating the window and door frame into exterior and interior

components and inserting a less conductive insulating strip in the centre provides an effective thermal insulating break.

Canterbury Aluminium also offers window replacements in existing houses as well as conservatory design, build and installation. They have an extensive range of doors and window through their “Elite” brand – just the ticket for post-earthquake repairs or renovations.

Canterbury Aluminium is indeed a versatile and innovative company continually striving to upgrade its products and improve its designs, but it does not stop there. It recognises the primary importance of keeping customers happy and satisfied. “We want to keep a good reputation with our clients and service their needs to the best of our abilities.”

Cardboard Cathedral architect takes out prestigious prize

Shigeru is a world-class architect and expert in disaster-zone building. The new cathedral is his

largest post-disaster structure to date.“The Pritzker Prize is the equivalent of

the Nobel Prize for architecture, being awarded for lifetime contribution to the advancement of the art of architecture globally,” says Dr Andrew Barrie,

professor at the University of Auckland’s School of Architecture and Planning and author of the forthcoming Shigeru Ban: Cardboard Cathedral (Auckland University Press).

“The Cardboard Cathedral now has the unique status as New Zealand's only building by a Pritzker-Prize-winning architect, cementing its position as

among the most significant buildings in New Zealand’s architectural history.”

Built in Christchurch’s inner city, the Cardboard Cathedral stands in for the historic building devastated by the earthquakes of September 2010 and February 2011. Signalling the beginnings of renewal in the CBD, the cathedral is the first new civic building completed since the quake and is built to last forever.

“Our book, Shigeru Ban: Cardboard Cathedral, captures the dramatic process of the design and construction of the Cathedral, and it will be great to share the story of this now even more significant building with the world,” Dr Barrie says.

Shigeru Ban was born in Tokyo in 1957. He trained at the Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles and the Cooper Union in New York before establishing his own firm in Tokyo, which now has offices in Tokyo, Paris and New York. He has taught at Yokohama National University, Keio University and Harvard University.

His career now spans three decades and has been characterised by both consistently innovative and adventurous design, and a concern for those who normally don't have access to such architecture – the dispossessed and traumatized victims of disasters.

“A temporary building that is loved by people – even one built with mere paper – can become permanent,” Shigeru says.

“I sense that this monument in Christchurch will be loved and used by the citizens of New Zealand for a long time to come.”

Shigeru Ban, architect of Christchurch’s Transitional (‘Cardboard’) Cathedral, has won the Pritzker Prize, the equivalent to the Nobel Prize for architecture.

With the furniture soon to arrive and the cross about to be installed, Ban was able to show Bishop Victoria Matthews around the building for the first time.

Stormwater system could save companies thousands

We’ve suffered some pretty extreme weather events in our little corner of the South Island’s eastern stretch recently, making a system to manage storm water overow a fitting winner of a coveted Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) award.

Anthony’s project is a new system that manages the peak ows from extreme rain events. Testing has proven the system delivers better environmental performance that competing systems, with considerable cost savings. The system could have international, as well as local applications. When used in new residential developments the savings can be up to $500,000 for the developer, with lower on-going infrastructure costs for ratepayers as it needs almost no maintenance.

WelTec student Anthony Muir was awarded the coveted Ray Meyer medal for Excellence in

Student Design for his final year Bachelor of Engineering Technology project.

Anthony’s water attenuation system manages storm water runoff and could save land developers and construction companies hundreds of thousands of dollars as well as substantially reducing the environmental impact of construction, he says.

“My project could very well be the catalyst to reduce the cost of housing in New Zealand,” Antony explains. “I am very excited that my work has been recognised by IPENZ and in receiving the Ray Meyer medal for Excellence in Student Design I acknowledge WelTec’s School of Engineering for their teaching, professionalism and commitment to students.”

presented at Water New Zealand’s 2014 Stormwater conference.

Anthony is an architectural engineer for the family business and is teaming up with his father to prepare his patented new system for the market.

It’s the second year in a row that a WelTec student has won the Ray Meyer award. “We are very pleased that one of our engineering technologist graduates has been recognised in this way, particularly as this is only the second time that an Institute of Technology has received this accolade,” WelTec chief executive Linda Sissons says.

“Demand for civil engineers has never been higher, particularly with the large government investment in infrastructure such as Transmission Gully and the rebuild of Christchurch,” she says.

“Engineering is on the government’s skill shortage list and the employment outlook is very strong.”

There is no need for a client to haggle with various tradesmen; Maxwell Plumbing will co-ordinate the work and ensure that it is carried out systematically, thus reducing the time the work takes to complete.

Getting your plumbing prepped for winter

Winter is fast approaching,” Maxwell Plumbing CEO Stephen Whittaker says.

“It’s a good time right now to check your home’s guttering and downpipes for any overows and cracks and your roof for any leaks. Our experienced staff can help you out with an efficient, reliable service customised to your needs and at affordable prices.”

Stephen Whittaker started Maxwell’s Plumbing in the late 1980s and has built it up to a company employing 28 staff. The company has two divisions – drainage contract work and plumbing. No domestic plumbing job is too big or too small for the Maxwells team. “Gutter/spouting repair and replacement, hot water cylinder replacements, dripping taps, burst pipes, overowing pipes, blocked toilets, leaking toilets, roof leaks – our plumbing division does it all.”

Maxwell Plumbing can offer a complete bathroom renovation service from design to completion - the CEO himself has the design skills. The company then works with an expert group of tradesmen and can provide

the builder, electrician, tiler and painter for the job, as well as the plumber and drainlayer of course. There is no need for a client to haggle with various tradesmen; Maxwell Plumbing will co-ordinate the work and ensure that it is carried out systematically, thus reducing the time the work takes to complete. Two weeks is the usual timeframe from start to finish. “One quote and one bill make the job simple and efficient. We are a one-stop shop to take the stress out of bathroom

renovations.”Customer feedback is of paramount

importance to Maxwell Plumbing so that they can keep improving their customer service. They send out survey forms to all their clients and every job they do goes into a monthly prize draw to win a night for two including, full breakfast, at ‘Waves on the Esplanade’ in Kaikoura.

Many of the staff at Maxwell Plumbing have worked for the company for a number of years. The company appreciates its people and has a strong

training ethic, constantly upgrading skills and investing in new equipment and techniques. Maxwell Plumbing also believes in looking ahead by taking on and training new tradesmen and currently employs six apprentices.

Established under the name Pot Hole People more than 20 years ago, the company began gradually expanding its services, rebranding

Where we were aiming to get across our increasing roading, civil engineering and residential capabilities, people thought we were the local Bob the Builder,” Declan laughs. Although now operating under the PHP Group banner, the goal remains the same – quality fast and friendly service for all customers. While George has since retired, Declan’s commitment to the company has only grown stronger. “The Pot Hole People are all grown up,” Declan laughs. “Our recruiting experience has allowed us to employ

On the field there is a supervisor, an asphalt team, civil engineering team and hard landscaping team. “A key part of our workload is currently insurance related repairs,” Declan says. “This is handled by our residential team who are on the field carrying out work on boundary walls etc. Then we have a civil engineering team carrying out site clearance, curb and channel, resurfacing and paving.”

He died in 2006 aged 101, but not before his firm C.S Luney which he started in 1926 built many prominent structures in Christchurch, including Princess Margaret Hospital, Christchurch Town Hall, Christchurch Public Library and the Parkroyal HotelIt was ten years in the making, but Charles Luney Master Builder, produced and directed by Samuel Miller and narrated by John Colley, artist and senior curator of the Christchurch City Art Gallery, may soon be released to the public.

Delayed by the earthquakes, the film

is expected to be released at the Sheffield film festival in Britain in June, but will also be available locally on DVD. Charles Luney had more of a thumbprint on the old city of Christchurch skyline than virtually any other personality, past or present; his buildings although utilitarian and modernist in general, shaped a city.Dying four years before the city was ravaged by earthquakes, Charles Luney luckily never witnessed the destruction of many of his beloved buildings, but the documentary which Samuel Miller says was “a labour of love” was completed despite many obstacles and adversities during this time.

What is future proofing and why do we need it?Stonewood Homes is holding a relaxed and informal seminar to discuss future proofing and why you need it in your home. Although a free event, prior registration is required for attendance and catering purposes.

The seminar is aimed at showing people how they can make the most of the options and opportunities available before they build and to give them an opportunity to touch and feel new products.

How to go broke and still be profitable

ne beautiful autumn day I was standing on Sumner

Obeach watching my children play in the lagoon pools that have appeared recently. The lagoons are a

bonus because they are a great, safe playground without having the worry of youngsters being caught in tidal rips.

Anyway, as I was contentedly contemplating the wonder of

the day, a chap approached me. He was an electrician running a three year old company, employing seven staff and that he had work booked up for the next six months.

Then he said he seemed to have a real problem developing because he was struggling to pay his bills and last week he had to ask the bank to extend his overdraft from $10,000 to $20,000 just to pay his staff. He was really stressed because he couldn’t figure out what was going on.

All during 2013 he’d had just three staff plus himself and he’d been able to pay all his creditors on time and he’d only once used his overdraft to pay some provisional tax. Because of the demand for his services, he’d come back from a short break over Christmas and decided that 2014 would be the year he doubled his staff, doubled his income and doubled his profit. And by the end of March his plan had come true. He’d doubled everything except his ability to pay his creditors.

I asked him “do you measure your debtor days?” He said “pardon?” I then rephrased my question and asked him if he tracked how many days it took people to pay him for the work he did. His predictable reply was no, he didn’t. He then asked what difference that would make.

I explained that debtor days measure the average time it takes to get paid and is totally unrelated to profit. Debtor days is another measurement of cashow and once it is

tracked and managed, can be as predictable as the tide coming in and going out.

Despite having a monthly paper profit, it only became reality once he was paid. And, if the tide coming in – getting paid – was not keeping pace with the tide going out – paying creditors – then he would be profit rich and cash poor.

We agreed to meet the next day and his problem was quickly obvious. His business had grown rapidly. He’d increased his sales but his debtor days had gone from 38 for 2013 and was now at 69 days. He needed more cash to feed the growth of his business but he’d relied on his customers to fund his expansion. It is very hard to fund rapid business growth without additional cash from a source other than customers.

It is very easy to grow a business and be profitable but quietly and quickly go broke.

Housing form and function

without compromise

“We are a design and build company, but with a real difference,” says Glenn Murdoch, design director of Vicus Design Group. “We have a simple belief that is fundamental to the way we design buildings. The belief is that people want to live in a healthy society and to do this they need healthy places in which to live, work, play and learn”.

For Glenn and his team too many of New Zealand’s homes are not healthy. They are built with an emphasis solely on aesthetic design, rather than an integrated combination of aesthetic appeal and performance. The Passive House Standard developed in Germany in the late 1980s is the world’s best performance standard for healthy buildings. Vicus Design Group uses this as their benchmark. “While not every building we design and build is a Certified Passive House it is the standard we constantly strive to achieve. We helped introduce this

concept to New Zealand and have been at the forefront of its development ever since.”

The Passive House Standard sets very strict criteria for performance in key areas of energy-efficiency. A home or building of any architectural style can be a Certified Passive House because the Passive House Standard is a performance standard, not a design standard. Building according to the Passive House standard, means that your home will always be at a comfortable and healthy temperature and be condensation-free and dry, while also providing enormous savings in heating and ventilation costs.

“We don’t compromise on aesthetic appeal to achieve performance and we have a fundamental belief that a home should be designed, tailored and built to suit clients’ individual needs. It is this recognition of individuality that results in the best homes you can find.”

People are discovering the Vicus Design Group difference. The group has homes underway in Scarborough and in Cashmere with another on Clifton Hill soon to start. Another eight in Christchurch are in the planning stages as well as homes in Wanaka and Queenstown. Vicus Design Group entrusts its on-site construction to ZBuilt Ltd, a Christchurch company with a similar desire to improve the way homes are designed and built in New Zealand. They employ building techniques that have been used in Europe for decades - techniques that increase speed, increase quality and decrease cost.

To learn more about the Passive House Standard and how you can achieve an aesthetically and functionally excellent home, contact the Vicus Design Group on (03) 974 1961 or email [email protected].

Foundation repairsto preserve yourresale value

Having foundation repairs carried out to the highest possible standard using the best

equipment and materials is vital to preserve the future re-sale value of a home,” says Dwayne Hubac, owner of Southern Repiling.

“People really need to pay attention to what is under their homes. This isn’t the case only in Christchurch, but anywhere in the country. Hardly anyone likes to crawl under a house, but that should be done to check that the piles are connected to the bearers and to see whether the oor is level or not.” Dwayne is speaking from experience. Lately he has been consulted by homeowners in Christchurch who have been trying to sell their homes and who have found that potential buyers do not think the repairs undertaken by various independent contractors are adequate.

Government agencies have been running trials used in justification of cheaper foundation repair strategies

such as “jack and pack” and “notching the bearers”. “Jack-and-pack levelling is where a stack of plastic shims or H5 timber-packers are used to fill the gaps between oor and foundation. Then there’s the opposite fix of notching the bearers – cutting away at the wood of the underoor joists to lower the middle of a room, or a high corner closer to the foundations. The combination can bring a oor which was tilting in various directions back into line – and it is not that these types of repairs are unsafe in

themselves. It is the way they are sometimes carried out that might not be up to the mark.

Homeowners can trust Southern Repiling to carry out their repairs correctly. A certified builder complemented by a team of qualified carpenters, Dwayne Hubac’s services have been in increasingly high demand since the earthquakes. With top of the range machinery to allow easy access to defective piles, Southern Repiling is able to successfully achieve level oors.

“Our hydraulic equipment is the latest from the USA and we use the right amount of equipment for each job, ensuring the house is fully supported at all times,” Hubac explains. “We set our new piles in a solid footing and at the correct depth, ensuring they are attached to your house correctly.”

For more information on how Southern Repiling can get your property’s piles level, phone (03) 455 5701, email [email protected] or visit their website www.southernrepiling.co.nz.

As the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority’s operations general manager, Warwick has managed the demolition and operations work programme - both residential and commercial - throughout greater Christchurch.

CCDU director

Warwick Isaacs,

Avon city precinct well underway

Christchurch City Council asked people to “Share an Idea” for the central city, key themes emerged of a “green city” including a revitalised Otakaro/Avon River corridor, strong urban design principles, a more compact core, an accessible city and one embracing cultural values.

Te Papa Otakaro/Avon River Precinct

“ticks all the boxes”. The river holds great significance for Ngai Tahu and Te Ngai Taahuriri Rananga and remains a touchstone of Christchurch’s spiritual identity. Its curves contrast with a linear street grid to provide an aesthetic framework on which cafes, bars and hotels will re-emerge to enjoy river views.

“Watermark”, the first section to open, spans the true left bank between Antigua Boatsheds and Montreal Street and while only a short part of the 3.2km-long, $96 million project, the extra native plants, board-walks, street furniture and lighting have attracted plenty of positive feedback.

Recent focus has shifted to a stretch between the Montreal Street bridge and Colombo Street, starting by temporarily moving large, grandfather-age, long-fin eels (tuna kuwharuwharu) to allow us to improve their habitat. A 2011 report by EOS Ecology said at least 16 fish species lived in the Avon with 11 of these upstream of the Fitzgerald Avenue bridge. We’re removing silt to provide the clean space for these fish to breed and thrive and will then continue our landscaping and planting to bring bellbirds, tui and other birdlife back to the central city. Not only will this on-going work greatly enhance the environment, it will make the river a world-class feature enjoyed by locals and tourists alike.

Huge progress has been made since. Late last year, for example, Minister Brownlee and Antony Gough turned the first sod for the Gough family’s $140 million retail and entertainment development The Terrace, work began on the five-storey Awly Investments complex and plans for the 40,000 square metre Justice and Emergency Services Precinct were unveiled.

So far in 2014, five green blocks within the North and East Frame have been created; with topsoil laid and grass sown, expressions of interest sought to build a new “frame community” of 750 homes around urban parkland and another partnership announced to shift the iconic Re:START Mall. Work has started on the Justice and Emergency Services Precinct and tenders invited for the $53 million Bus Interchange.

One of the most exciting tasks is Te Papa Otakaro/Avon River Precinct, which is surely the largest urban river restoration programme in New Zealand. When

It’s amazing to think that less than a year ago in this magazine’s July 2013 edition I discussed the recent lifting of the CBD cordon, how the central city was being reopened to people and looking ahead to the Avon River Precinct and other projects.

One family’s important rebuild roll

In just three years, the building firm has repaired more than 1200 properties throughout the city and,

rather than losing momentum, Buildtech’s Andreas Cooper says this is just the beginning.

“During the past three years we have experienced significant growth,” Andreas says.

“There’s a reason for that; the repair construction arena is complex and a lot of construction companies don’t want to

be involved. We have always maintained a focus on earthquake repairs, it’s complex, it’s challenging and it’s what we enjoy.

“Now with 1,268 repairs completed, we are moving onto phase two of the rebuild.”

During the past three years the focus has been on remediating and strengthening damaged residential buildings. Phase two, he says, involves larger scale properties, such as multi-

unit body corp work and commercial properties.

“Quality, delivery and health and safety are the three core tenets of the business. Because of our focus on these three areas, we are now well positioned for these larger developments and we have already been involved with projects for Housing New Zealand and the Ministry of Education.”

Company director Israel Cooper says while the residential new build space is already well serviced, Buildtech sees itself well positioned to continue to service the more challenging residential builds. “We have the skill base and capabilities to carry out commercial fit-out work, but we also consider ourselves well placed to continue working within the complex and challenging aspects of residential building.

“We’ve grown, we’ve adapted and we’re here for the long term.”

While operational diversity has played a strong role in Buildtech’s success, Israel says ethnic and gender diversity are also important factors. Half the company’s work force are from overseas, which Israel says is out of

necessity, and Buildtech also encourages women to enter the traditionally male dominated industry. “This diversity adds significant value to our business,” he says.

So it’s not surprising then that a significant portion of the company’s profit is filtered straight back into the community through a wide range of charities and initiatives. “This is driven by our staff who have a big say in both who and how we support the community,” Israel adds.

The Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust and the Ministry for Culture and Heritage have

announced they will jointly provide funding of $2.5 million for the restoration of the Armagh and Durham Street stone towers.

Once completed this work is intended to enable the adjacent wooden buildings to be reopened for public use as soon as possible.

Widely acknowledged as New Zealand’s most outstanding example of High Victorian Gothic Revival

architecture, the Stone Chamber (1865) collapsed immediately after the February 22 earthquake in 2011 and was compounded by subsequent seismic activity. The Armagh Street stone tower also collapsed and the Durham Street stone tower was damaged to a point where deconstruction was necessary.

Canterbury Earthquake Heritage Buildings Fund chair Dr Anna Crighton says we can’t underestimate the importance of the buildings. “The Canterbury Provincial Council Buildings are the last remaining purpose-built

provincial parliament buildings in New Zealand. The ornate and detailed stone council chamber has a particularly significant heritage value and these were the first buildings listed as a Category 1 Historic Building by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.”

The Armagh and Durham Street towers currently remain deconstructed down to a height of 2-4 metres above ground level. The funding is to be put to their restoration and reconstruction, opening up the principal public access way to the buildings, through the Armagh Street tower.

Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel says the restoration of the two towers

The total cost of restoration and reconstruction of the Provincial building complex is yet to be determined, but it is estimated to exceed the total insurance pay-out of $30 million.

$2.5 million boost to restore Canterbury Council Buildings

supports a landmark recovery project. “This is great news for Christchurch and will be well-received locally and internationally. I am excited we have secured this funding so we can preserve some of Christchurch’s unique story and make significant parts of this iconic building available for public use once more. So much has already been lost here in Christchurch it’s great to celebrate this good news and take this positive step forward in restoring the Canterbury Provincial Building,” she says.

Assessments by engineers confirmed the timber portions of the buildings are repairable, however the stone towers and chamber will require major works. Christchurch City Council has been deconstructing, stabilising and making all the buildings safe, ensuring they are weather-proof. The remains of the Stone Chamber have been stabilised but a decision on whether to rebuild this part of the complex has yet to be made.

The total cost of restoration and reconstruction of the Provincial building complex is yet to be determined, but it is estimated to exceed the total insurance pay-out of $30 million. Work is expected to commence later this year.

A competitive cladding solution

When new clients Greg and Mandy Slaughter engaged them to build a home in

Papanui there was an important decision to make about building materials. The geotechnical report categorised the land as TC2, so although they could go ahead with building the owners needed to ensure that the building materials were lightweight. Andrew had recently built his own home in Christchurch - and wanting a light product that was durable and strong, he had chosen to go with Jenkin A-lign Concealed Fix. Having seen the benefits of the product first hand, Andrew knew it would be ideal. The Slaughters were impressed with the product because they wanted a classic weatherboard look. The lightweight nature of A-lign Concealed Fix meant the engineers were happy too.

The innovative system locks the engineered timber weatherboards tightly in place without the use of nails, so the surface is unbroken. That means high moisture protection, no filling and puttying of nail holes and reduced painting costs. The system allows builders to install the cladding to the highest traditional standards in record

time. Kelly Wood explains, “This was actually the first job where we have used the A-lign system, aside from Andrew’s own home - mainly because we haven’t been asked to use much weatherboard. Many older houses in Christchurch are now being rebuilt and because A-lign Concealed Fix (and

Nail-Fix) is so lightweight it is a great product to use”.

Now that the owners have moved in, they couldn't be happier with their new two-storey home. “We are thrilled with the A-lign cladding system; it was exactly what we wanted as we really did want that older-style classic look. And with the lack of nails, the weatherboarding was easy to install and put together.

The Slaughters say they did make one little mistake though. The A-lign system is primed and undercoated with Dulux paint in the factory, including final colour coat options. This leaves just the final top coat of paint to apply, allowing for an excellent paint finish and savings on time and cost. But a little hold-up occurred when the owners decided (once the house was complete), that they wanted to change the colour scheme, ever so slightly! An extra coat of paint and the job was done. With its great weatherboard and paint system, it’s easy to agree, the overall finish of this outstanding home is perfect.

The ultimate housing option

“We’ve been carrying out a lot of EQR repairs over the past couple of years,” says Martin Smith, who started this building business. “There is nothing more satisfying than seeing the look of delight on homeowners’ faces when they come back to their repaired and redecorated houses able to move on with their lives in a secure and warm environment once again”.

Ultimate Homes is currently working with Fletchers EQR, Arrow and Stream and is further assisting in the recovery of Christchurch through the complete rebuilding of other homes. They are in the process of re-building a home in Westmorland and have another coming up on Moncks Spur, as well as a major repair job in Beckenham.

The company is an award-winning one and has five times been winners of awards in the Master Builders House of the Year competition, New Zealand's premier residential building awards programme. This demonstrates that they have the experience, professionalism, skill, expertise and solid reputation to indeed build the ‘ultimate’ home for clients.

Maintaining our physical heritage

Established in 2001, Plaster Works has extensive experience in heritage restoration plastering

throughout New Zealand and the UK. Based in Christchurch, the company is proud to be playing a strong role in the rebuild of many of our famed heritage buildings.

Director John McVicar completed his apprenticeship in Scotland, working in several heritage sites including the restoration of the nearly 900 year old Stirling Castle. John and the team of similarly qualified and experienced tradesmen take pride and enjoyment restoring old buildings to their former glory, using traditional materials and techniques.

To ensure the continuation of the use and knowledge of the skills involved in heritage restoration, Plaster Works has recently taken on an apprentice. “It’s extremely important we preserve our physical heritage for future generations,” John says.

“So it’s important we continue to nurture these skills and techniques, while constantly adapting and improving them to meet today’s modern building requirements.”

Traditional methods currently in demand in Christchurch include repairs

to lath and plaster walls and ceilings using traditional lime and horse hair plasters. Lath and plaster walls don’t always have to be removed and replaced with Gib!

In fact, traditional methods can be fused with modern technology to include

The ornate, character filled heritage properties which aesthetically stimulate our streetscapes tell an architectural story, from the founding of our city in 1850 through decades of growth and prosperity. It takes a special kind of talent to keep those heritage buildings in top form. But for Plaster Works, it’s all in a day’s work.

re-enforcement and strengthening, creating a superior finished product. Plaster Works recently repaired and re-enforced most of the lath and plaster walls and ceilings in Riccarton House, returning them to their original state, with increased strength.

The company also enjoys cornice and ceiling rose repairs, as well as decorative mouldings, for both interior and exterior applications. The Victoria St clock tower is an example of new plaster systems used to match in with original plasters.

In addition to heritage restoration, Plaster Works’ services include all aspects of commercial and residential solid and modified rendered plaster systems, both interior and exterior.

Bespoke internal decorative finishes are another Plaster Works specialty, for example polished plasters, stone and concrete look finishes, which can all be achieved on plasterboard.

A New Zealand agent and applicator for Armourcoat decorative internal plaster finishes, Licensed Sto applicators, a Licensed Building Practitioner, Site Safe Certified and EQC accredited you can rest assured your heritage building is in safe hands.

Replenishing Kaiapoi’s housing stock

Currently on site things are very busy with completed homes, homes under construction,

drainage crews laying town services, roading crews laying tarmac and builders laying foundations for even more homes. It won’t be long before some fortunate people have the opportunity to live in BeachGrove with the first homes set for completion in May.

BeachGrove has recognised a real need to replenish attainable housing stock for the people of Kaiapoi and the greater Canterbury region. It has a mix of medium and high density villas and townhouses providing more than enough options to suit all lifestyles and budgets. Homes in Stage 1 start from $355,000. With Stage 1 selling fast, the team at Beach Grove have started

planning Stage 2, which immediately borders the Kaiapoi North Primary School and which also includes a preschool. “We’re confident that many people who felt they couldn’t afford a new home will now be able to,” says BeachGrove Estates CEO Shane Fairmaid. “Our vision is to provide a wide range of attainable and energy-efficient homes all suitable for our naturally diverse community and all within easy walking distance of the heart of Kaiapoi.”

BeachGrove has undergone extensive site investigations by geotechnical engineers Tonkin and Taylor. It is founded on TC2 category land with all sections elevated to protect them from storm events. Each lot is also provided with a geo-technical report giving comfort and assurance to homeowners.

Working closely with the developer and the Waimakariri District Council, Woods Land Surveyors and Urban Planners have conceived a master-

planned solution with wide open parks, yet delivering an intimate feel with neighbourhood shops planned at its centre, wide boulevards and elegant street lighting, all very close to many great recreational activities, such as fishing, boating, biking, beach, aquatic centre, sports grounds and the soon to be completed public library.

At the beginning of June this milestone will be celebrated with a special community launch involving local businesses and stakeholders many of whom have helped bring BeachGrove from concept through to fruition. The ANZ, along with BeachGrove homes builder Mike Greer Homes, will be there, as well as Real Estate Agents Harcourts, who are responsible for marketing BeachGrove.

To learn more about this development visit the website www.beachgrovekaiapoi.co.nz or contact Christine Watton of Harcourts Kaiapoi on 027 476 0304.

At BeachGrove the development team have made impressive progress to convert what only 12 months ago was open pasture into the completion of the first 50 homes.

From the front lines

We are now five months into a very busy year and it is encouraging to see the sustained progress in the settlement of Canterbury

claims. That progress includes a real push in settling some of our most complex claims, involving multi-unit buildings.

Dealing with around 10,000 buildings involving 29,500 individual units has been an unprecedented process at a national level

The majority of properties that fall under the multi-

unit building category include semi-detached and terraced houses. EQC is also dealing with a large number of apartment blocks, managed by body corporates and multiple buildings under a single insurance policy.

We have always been upfront about the complexities involved in settling these properties. Multi-unit buildings may have a number of factors that need to be taken into account before we can confirm how they can be settled. Such factors include determining repair dependencies – that is whether there is any damage to shared structural parts of the building, such as foundations, party walls and roofs – as well as dealing with multiple insurers and multiple owners within the same building.

Such a variety of factors has meant a lot more time has been needed to review each claim to ensure we determine the best settlement solution for all involved.

That being said, I am pleased to note that we now know how we will settle over 95% of these buildings, that is whether they will be cash settled, repaired through the Canterbury Home Repair Programme or referred to a private insurer.

We’re conscious that there is still more we have to do.

We hope to have certainty for all customers as far as how they will be settled by mid-2014 and we will continue to provide updates as customers progress through to settlement.

While there may be some exceptions for the most

complex multi-unit building claims, EQC is aiming to complete all multi-unit building claims by the end of 2014.

EQC has learnt a lot about settling multi-unit buildings in Canterbury and we will be much better prepared for any future events. The lessons learnt have already been implemented in dealing with the Cook Strait and Eketahuna events.

EQC National Operations Manager, Barry Searle discusses the complexities involved in settling multi-unit buildings and the progress to date.

If your home has a plaster finish construction, plan and carry out an annual moisture-check regime as part of your on-going maintenance plan.

How to winter-proof your homeAvoid Being Leaky!

“With the weather already throwing us into random days of heavy rains and gale winds the weather tightness of our homes has been thrust to the top of our minds. The recent ood gave us an opportunity to see where water collected and where drainage and leaks may be in need of attention. If it hasn’t been top of your mind, take this opportunity to reect on how your home and section performed in intense rain and consider if it could be at risk of future ooding or leaking. We tend to take the functioning of our properties for granted, but when did we last check the drains, ashings, guttering, roof ridges and loose tiles for potential ingress areas?

If there are issues, follow through and have repairs carried out, in order to protect your investment and future resale, instead of pushing it aside and hoping it doesn’t become an issue again. Left not dealt with, it only comes back as a much bigger issue. Recent experience has seen this cause one of my owner’s heartache with two cancelled contracts. In actual fact it was a neighbour’s drainage issue causing the problem.”

Debbie Soper is a licensed senior real estate consultant with Harcourts Papanui. Because of her lengthy tenure and considerable experience, she has some very sound advice for homeowners at this time of the year.

Keep It Dry!

“Moisture and weather tightness issues are on buyers’ and banks’ radars now more than we’ve seen in recent years. If your home has a plaster finish construction, regardless of what the plaster is over and regardless of whether it is two years, 12 years or 20 years old, plan and carry out an annual moisture-check regime as part of your on-going maintenance plan.

If any issues then arise, you will know they are only recent and localised and will be easier to remedy, as opposed to being unforeseen for years. There are many companies who do non-invasive moisture checks which are quite reasonable. I can’t stress enough how important this is in our very risk-conscious environment. When it comes to buying, in many cases, buyers do not have the final say on what they can or can’t buy; their banks do. Regular moisture check reports and checking of ashings and drainage will serve you well when it comes time to sell and give you peace of mind while you’re enjoying your home.”

Ensuring we get thecity cycleways right

Council wants to build the cycleways as quickly as possible and planning is well in

hand to open sections of the high-priority routes over the coming summer,” says Councillor Phil Clearwater, chair of the Environmental Committee.

In 2013-2014 period the Council will spend $1.78 million on the Major Cycleways project and $8.31 million the following year.

Councillor Clearwater says building the network is a complex, large-scale project. “Designing and building a cycleway network of this kind is similar to the work that’s needed to design and build new roadways, and requires a great deal of detailed analysis and preliminary work.

“The Council wants to set a new standard with its Major Cycleways, providing a network that addresses the safety concerns of the community. This project aims to elevate levels of service above what has been previously provided. We are talking about much

more than simply painting lines on the roadside.

“Where they are on busy roads riders will be physically separated from the other traffic lanes. To achieve this improved standard requires a considerable amount of planning and consultation. In some locations land purchase will also be necessary.”

Clearwater says while the recent

tragic death of a cyclist in the city highlights the need to deliver improved facilities quickly, this was a project that would be difficult to speed up.

“If we are to genuinely provide a safe, connected network above the standard we have done before, we need to make sure we get the planning and detailed design right. That is the advice we have received from international transport

expert Leo de Jong from the Netherlands, who spent last week in Christchurch helping with the Major Cycleways planning and design.”

It is these practical considerations, and not budget constraints, that led to a decision to extend delivery over eight years instead of five, Clearwater says. The start date of the project was not affected.

Spreading the work over eight years will deliver the standard of cycleway required to improve safety and encourage new cyclists to take up cycling, Clearwater says. On busy routes, this will mean riders being separated from motor vehicles.

“By separation, we don’t mean physical barriers you may see on a bridge like the guard rails.

“There are many ways to introduce separation and people are more likely to see low-profile dividers, landscaping and other design techniques that clearly and safely separate riders from vehicular traffic.” For more information and FAQs on the Major Cycleways, go to www.ccc.govt.nz/cycleways

Work on sections of Christchurch City Council’s Major Cycleways network will start this year, a project planned across eight years to ensure we get it right.

Get the water heating system to suit your needs

There's a range of options available to suit every household's needs. Water heating systems tend to be water storage systems

(like the traditional hot water cylinder) or continuous ow systems which heat water directly as it runs through it, rather than storing the water. Not all water heating systems are created equal - some types of water heating are more efficient than others, and efficiency can also vary between models of the same type. Gillon and Maher Plumbing offers customers choices from a range of efficient hot water cylinders or the team can convert your current hot water system to gas.

The EcoSpring hybrid hot water heating system combining a hot water cylinder and a heat pump reduces water heating operating costs up to 70 percent. That adds up to significant savings, and you won’t have to give up a single drop of water. Gillon and Maher can install one of these systems at your home for $5,500 plus GST. They have no hesitation in saying that you will recoup this cost within two to three years through savings.

Gillon and Maher specialise in gas conversions. “This type of hot water system produces endless hot water and is an energy-efficient water heating system, because it's only on when you need water,” Darren Maher says. “These systems are definitely the way of the future. We have Rinnai and Bosch gas units that are of a very high star rating and that can save up to 65 percent on energy costs. Our conversions start at $2,800 plus GST.”

Gillon and Maher’s versatility in supplying and installing hot water systems does not stop there. The company also supplies and installs Ice Solar systems.

This solar product manufacturer provides energy solutions for hot water for single and multi-unit developments saving up to 75 percent on energy usage. The product can be retrofitted as well as put into new homes or dwellings.

Whenever you use Gillon and Maher’s services you can be assured of quality workmanship by experienced and skilled tradesmen who are content only when they have compete customer satisfaction.

For all your plumbing needs contact the main line (03) 379 3930, phone Darren directly on 021 885163 or visit the website www.gmplumbing.co.nz.

It’s important to select the right water heating system for your needs. Your hot water system needs to be able to provide plenty of hot water for your entire household, but that doesn't have to mean compromising on efficiency.

Creating homessmarter small

But Carpe Diem’s focus on innovation goes further than houses alone. Steve McMillan and his team, along with structural and geo-technical engineers have developed a foundation design for building on Christchurch’s TC3 category land which has recently been approved by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) and by the Christchurch City Council.

“Carpe Diem has a deep commitment to the rebuild of Christchurch and finding cheaper foundation solutions for TC3 land was crucial,” Steve says. “What we came up with is a light-weight in-ground foundation and timber sub-oor which we costed-out as being some 60 percent cheaper than the foundations suggested in MBIE’s building guidelines for TC3 land.”

The first house to be built using the new foundation system is a two-storey dwelling on the hills above Redcliffs. The house itself is a cross between Carpe Diem’s Georgina house plan and its Lyndon plan, indicative of how exible, adaptable and site-specific these homes can be. The additional foundation cost over and above TC1 specifications was only

$200 per square metre, as compared with $450-$500 for MBIE’s suggested foundations.

Fundamental to these costings is that the land does not have to be remediated first. Carpe Diem is now in the design phase for four more houses on TC3 land in different parts of the city. “The less money people are required to put into the cost of a house’s foundations, the more they can afford to put into the dwelling itself.”

In January Cape Diem opened a Smarter Small Homes showhome in Sovereign Palms. The design is called “Grassmere”. It is 183m2, has three bedrooms and two bathrooms and a double garage all for $263,000 including GST. It also has a photovoltaic solar system, a heat pump and extra insulation that the Carpe Diem team believe will reduce average energy costs by around 50 percent annually. “The reaction we have had from people who have visited the showhome has been phenomenal. They are quite blown away by the energy efficiency measures we include as standard and by how healthy and eco-friendly our Smarter Small Homes are.”Carpe Diem offers fast construction turnaround on their homes from 16–18 weeks. The rebuild is keeping many busy – but busy does not necessarily mean good profits and cashow. Across the region, there are countless stories of businesses not getting paid in a timely manner, struggling financially and the worst case scenario - going into receivership.

Dave Sewell is a well respected business coach for mid market companies in Canterbury and one of only two Gazelles International coaches in New Zealand. Canterbury Rebuild chats to Dave, looking for some solid tips businesses can use to help improve their profit and manage cashow.

Q. What are some of the biggest issues you see in the local marketplace?A. Incorrect margins – especially in the trades sector. I know one company that is busier than they have ever been, but they are not making money. Their net profit sits around four percent. And this is simply because they are undercharging. Companies MUST know what its costs are and get their pricing right.

Q. What do you need to do to achieve this?A. In one word - back costing. Look at your last five jobs and find out what the gross margin was. Understand your real costs and use this information to get your future pricing right.

Q. What’s the best piece of advice you can offer for getting paid?A. Choose good customers. Again, I know companies that have a list of Aclients that never pay them on time. These are not A clients – they are liabilities. Get rid of them – look at who does payon time and chase them and others like them. You are not a bank – get tough and chase anyone who owes you money. Make sure you also have good terms and conditions – get help from your lawyer and/or accountant.

Q. What can you do to maximise profits?A. There are three things that will get you closer to the profits you want:Get effective processes in place. Efficiency saves time. Again – get professional help to establish systems and processes.Avoid delays – they cost time. If you schedule effectively, by lining up trades, people and workows to avoid downtime, it’s highly profitable. Its challenging, but time and effort in this area will have massive returns (if your pricing is right!)

Minimises mistakes – do it right the first time. Cutting corners will cost you in the long run. Redoing work comes straight off your bottom line.Get more practical business tips at www.davesewell.co.nz

Healthy home experiment kicks off

The ‘HRV Pure Invironment Project’, led by HRV, will take the 110 year old villa at 45 Lincoln

Street in Ponsonby and restore it to its former glory, with the addition of top quality ventilation, heating and cooling solutions and HRV’s latest innovation – a Whole Home Water Filtration system.

“It may be a Ponsonby house,” HRV chief executive Bruce Gordon says. “But it’s typical of homes around the country that are prone to mould and dampness which have adverse effects on the health of the household, especially children.

“The project will show Kiwi families how to fix damp, harmful living conditions and how to create a healthy environment for them and their kids.”

The heritage and essence of the grand old house will be retained, while adding sophisticated contemporary elements to give it a modern and stylish feel. “It’s also a real, tangible way of

demonstrating HRV’s mission of reinventing the home environment to improve the air quality in Kiwi homes, which ultimately means improved health and well-being all round,” Bruce says.

Once the HRV Pure Invironment Project house is completed it will be sold by Auckland real estate agent Antonia Baker from real estate company The Property Market.

While the look of the house will be restored to its former glory, the key to the project is creating a healthy, state of the art home solution. HRV Water will be installed to provide filtration to all household taps, ensuring it is free from contaminants. The two bathrooms will be fitted with HRV Vortex wet area

extractors, an HRV Next Generation system will power the ventilation of the home and HRV heating and cooling systems will help regulate the temperature inside the house during summer and winter.

Antonia, who hears first-hand what buyers want from a house, says the HRV project is raising awareness of the importance of looking after your home and making it a safe and liveable space. “It’s high time a trusted brand like HRV started to beat the drum about making Kiwi homes healthier,” she says.

A house renovation-project-meets-social-experiment to transform a cold and mouldy villa into a healthy and liveable home has kicked off in central Auckland and it aims to set a new benchmark for the quality of homes nationwide.

Rob has managed the historic building for more than seven years and says it’s really grown

on him. “Riccarton House represents an important part of our social history. The house, the bush and the Deans' history means a lot to both me and the city as a whole.

“The restoration has been a significant undertaking, a real labour of love for a lot of people.”

Once home to John and Jane Deans, Riccarton House as it stands today was built in three stages – 1856, 1874 and 1900. With a category 1 rating from the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, the house functions as a museum of colonial history, a restaurant and function centre, but it has been closed to the public since the February 2011

quake.Little damage was sustained in the

September 2010 earthquake, but just five months later, Riccarton House was hit hard.

The chimneys – fractured in September suffered further damage, with one collapsing and spitting bricks across the room, lath and plaster ceilings and walls cracked, with some collapsing completely and worse was to come with hidden issues becoming evident as repairs began.

“In 1856 construction methods were much lighter and due to its age, this section of the building contained a lot of rot which became evident once repairs started,” Rob says.

“The building as a whole has become stronger over the years and we had the

opportunity to secure the building’s future for many more years.”

Rotten timbers in wall studs and oor plates became evident when ceilings and wall linings were removed. An application for about $33,000 was made to the council’s Heritage Grants Scheme to pay for this work.

Downstairs the lath and plaster walls have been replaced with structural ply for strength and then lined with Gib board. The remaining lath and plaster walls and ceilings have been meshed with fibreglass for strength and

The $2.5 million repair and upgrade of Christchurch’s famed Riccarton House is nearing completion and, when finished, the landmark will be physically stronger, more affordable and with greater access to the public than ever before explains manager Rob Dally.

The repair and strengthening work enabled the opportunity to improve the lighting, heating and insulation in the ground oor public areas of the building.

Pink wall batts, underoor heating and polystyrene insulation have been installed. Additional power outlets have been provided and lighting has been upgraded. Egress signage and smoke stop doors have been installed.

Electrical wiring was regarded a fire risk which meant new insurance cover might have been difficult.

A $47,000 grant from the City Council’s Capital Endowment Grant Scheme paid for the complete rewiring of the house.

A new commercial kitchen for catering and restaurant facilities was added at the cost of $160,000 and replacement wallpapers sourced from around the world, as close as possible to the originals cost $24,000.

Today Riccarton House complies

Opportunity in the Rebuild with all building consent conditions except for a lift, where an exemption was granted due to a lift compromising the heritage values of the building.

Once reopened, Riccarton House will be open to the public more frequently, Rob says, with the establishment of Friends of Riccarton House which will provide volunteer guides during an extended time range of 10-4 every day. “We are making Riccarton House more

accessible with extended hours, more affordable for families by allowing each child entrance free with a paying adult and encouraging more Cantabrians to visit.

“Most importantly we have made the

building more robust and more user-friendly,” Rob says.

“Whilst I can pay tribute to the tradespeople who originally crafted this beautiful building off of these years ago, I must pay tribute to the highly skilled group of professionals and tradespeople whose recent work ensures that Riccarton House will be around for many more years to come.”

We are making Riccarton House more accessible with extended hours, more affordable for families and encouraging more Cantabrians to visit.

shattered cornices have been replicated and replaced. The trust is very appreciative of the $178,000 grant received from the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust to cover this work.

Thankfully steel tube strengthening prevented worse damage from occurring within most of the brick chimneys and fireplaces throughout the building, three which have been maintained as operational. Repairs involved removing the brick chimneys in their entirety, replacing the bricks with

structural steel columns, temporarily removing the brick fire surrounds and encasing them in concrete before sliding them back in place and with new bricks where the chimneys come through the roof.

Structural work was necessary in some parts of the building where strength was as low as 10 percent of the new building standards. The renovations have brought the house up to 67 percent – enough for safety and security without damaging the heritage fabric of the building.

Let your business do the takling

Established in 1990, Wellington based Fusion Interiors Limited (FIL) set up shop in Christchurch

two years ago with a wide range of commercial fit out services, including commercial office furniture installations, relocations and business storage options and it’s proving a welcome addition to Canterbury’s commercial space. FIL is enabling Canterbury businesses to let their premises do the talking, with commercial office furniture installations, design consultation, space planning and CAD drawing. You can even lease your office furniture for short or long term, ensuring your premises stays looking tip top.

“We cover commercial relocations, so moving businesses from A to B,” explains company director Dan Sinclair. “We also provide a range of quality pre-owned / refurbished commercial office furniture and post-relocation we do asset disposal services, removing all the furniture left behind when a company gets a brand new fitout.”

From the installation of a single desk to the installation of 100 plus desk systems, the company can complete these projects with a professional standard and within the agreed timeframe, working alongside architects and project teams during planning, preparation and layout to ensure a seamless workow for a successfully completed project. Fusion Interiors can also refurbish and recycle pre-owned office furniture for a fraction of the retail price, including quality ex-corporate and government office furniture. “In some cases this furniture is just a couple of years old,” Dan says. Off-site business storage is also available; a unique storage system, it works a lot like online shopping. “This enables companies to see what assets they have in store without leaving their desktops and they can dispatch them straight from the warehouse using their online account.

“We can deliver this and carry out a complete installation for them.”

Te Papa manager of facilities was

pleased with the speed and efficiency of FIL’s role in producing new CAD oor plans, moving 220 desks, associated office furniture and equipment with minimal disruption and replacing furniture with something which would provide exibility for future requirements, in a short timeframe.

“FIL were selected to undertake all the work due to them meeting all our requirements, and were also able to offer us the option of purchasing pre loved furniture in very good condition, all of the same sizes. We ended up buying the furniture from FIL and it was a very cost effective option.

“The result was a very big logistical move was done within the Easter weekend timeframe, it looked great, and was cost effective. I would look to FIL first for all my future office movements requirements.”
