Canterbury ElderCollege Welcomes You! Canterbury ElderCollege is about to launch its 18th Semester in Spring 2020; once again, our three Curriculum Committees have worked enthusiastically to develop an amazing variety of courses. We can anticipate more excitement as we move forward with this wonderful opportunity for older adults.

Canterbury College is the residential Anglican College affiliated with the University of Windsor. Our affiliated ElderCollege program was founded in 2011 to provide educational outreach to the growing segment of the population aged 55 and better, and to enhance the attractiveness of the Windsor/Essex and Chatham-Kent County regions as retirement destinations.

ElderCollege's founding philosophy is to offer low cost educational opportunities throughout all those communities where people live. We do this through a network of remote campuses. Our courses are intended to be fun and stimulating for all participants and include opportunities for social interaction. And, all our courses are designed and offered by volunteer instructors with a passion for their chosen subjects!

Canterbury ElderCollege was explicitly designed to provide pleasant learning opportunities for older adults who want to experience enrichment of their lifestyle through active involvement in education, and thereby contribute to the social and cultural enhancement of their community and their personal lives.

So, as we welcome everybody to our new Spring 2020 Semester, we invite you and your friends to peruse the courses being offered within our sparkling new Course Calendar. We hope you will have the opportunity to indulge in the immense variety of interesting, exciting and often entertaining courses that have been developed for your educational and social enjoyment. We are so looking forward to seeing you soon in a fun course! Dr. Gordon W.F. Drake, FRSC Dr. Lloyd Brown-John Principal, Canterbury College Director & Founder of ElderCollege

History of the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN)

History of the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN). The history of Canada’s naval

forces mirrors Canadian history in that it reflects the results of national

leadership challenges during times of international crisis, as well as the

demands of peacetime domestic agendas. The course will describe the

unique challenges faced by Canada in establishing and maintaining

affordable maritime security forces throughout the tumultuous events that

defined the entire 20th and early 21st Centuries, including a change in

hegemons. Using warships as an illustrative vehicle, the course will follow

the metamorphous of a struggling sub-set of the British Imperial fleet that

would become a modern professional blue-water navy. However, today’s

RCN has come at a price, as throughout its 110-year history Canada’s

navy has continually struggled to keep up quantitively with the

expectations of key Allies and alliances. Often operating under

exceptionally demanding resource restraints, both personnel and fiscal,

Canada’s naval forces continue to persevere despite capricious national

support. The course will cover: • Creation of the RCN into the First World

War• The interwar years and the formation of the Naval Reserve• The

Second World War and the Battle of the Atlantic• Post Second World War

RCN up to the 1960s – including The Cold War (Korea)• Integration &

Unification - the shift to the Canadian Armed Forces • Cold War until

1989• Post-Cold War to 9/11• Post 9/11 to present. Class Size: Max. 40

Czech Migration and Contribution to Kent County

The Dominion Sugar Company was in need of experienced extra workers

to process sugar beets. In the mid-1920s they looked to Europe and found

Czechoslovakia had a climate similar to Kent County with similar crops

grown. They paid the fare for the men to come to Canada. With the money

they earned they brought their families, the men taught themselves

Reiki

Reiki (ray-key) is a tool to help us develop a "wellness consciousness"

and also to feel, what it truly means to be "Completely Centered". By

learning and practicing Reiki hands on techniques, which include

meditation, a deeper awareness often develops with the flow of subtle

energies in and around the body. Learn about the connection between

these subtle energies and one's health. This developing awareness

validates the ancient idea that strong life force energy contributes to good

health. Conversely a diminished supply of life force energy can contribute

to illness. These include fear, worry, doubt, anger, anxiety, etc. Reiki is a

technique that aids the body in releasing stress and tension by creating

deep relaxation. Class Size: Max. 20

Easter Island: An Exploration Visit Easter Island is a Chilean territory and a remote 64 square mile volcanic island in Polynesia (South Pacific). Its native name is Rapa Nui. It’s famed for archaeological sites, including nearly 900 monumental statues called moai, created by inhabitants during the 13th–16th centuries. The moai are carved human figures with oversize heads, often resting on massive stone pedestals called ahus. Easter Island is located some 2,300 miles from Chile’s west coast and 2,500 miles east of Tahiti. The island was christened Easter Island by Dutch explorers in honor of the day of their arrival in 1722. It was annexed by Chile in the late 19th century, and maintains an economy based largely on tourism. Never been there? Then

Lake Huron: Keeping it British 1812-1814 The War of 1812 the northwest, while important to the health of the fur trade and maintaining the support of the native people, played a relatively minor role in the bigger picture of the war. Lake Huron and Fort Michilimackinac remained in British hands throughout, but only through the amazing and heroic efforts of a relatively small number of people. The main issue was keeping the Fort fed after the Americans won control of Lake Erie in 1813 and cut off supplies. The efforts of the ship HMS Nancy are only part of the story that includes Fort Willow and the Nine Mile Portage. It makes an exciting story with a surprising ending! Class Size: Max. 30

exploration of some little secret and forgotten places mainly in Elgin County.

Stories of Home There are many little-known stories about Windsor and Essex County. We may have heard of the explosion at the train station in Essex in 1907, but what details can we recall? What do you know about the whitefish industry on the Detroit River, or the iron furnace at Olinda that helped keep the shipping ports of Union and Albertville working? Have you heard about the fires that put the tollgates in Essex out of business? Or the colourful colonel who ran for politics and quelled an angry mob with a braced of pistols? Was Simon Girty a friend or foe? In the 1950s and 60s, a series of radio broadcasts was aired to answer some of these questions. Herb Colling found the transcripts and compiled them into a concise little-known history of Windsor, Amherstburg and Essex County. In this course you will learn all the answers. Class Size: Max. 25

Blacksmith 101 These modern times do not have the need for a blacksmith (except for restorations or artwork) compared to the days of our ancestors. The blacksmith had a certain mythical image reaching back to Nordic Sagas of dwarfs creating swords and blades with magical powers in caves under the mountains for their heroic knights and always stood in high esteem among all the various trades. For us Canadians it was most important to have a blacksmith in a settlement because, without a person to shoe horses, repair and/or manufacture the rims for the wagons, replace and manufacture a plough blade or replace cutting edges with higher carbon steel, it was hard for a village to grow. We will have a classroom/ question/ answer period and then proceed to a physical demonstration to the Park Forge for the demonstration that involves the blacksmithing of a few basic steel items. From Small Town Mayor to International Oil Baron Find out why a former mayor of Petrolia, Ontario was called upon to help

the British government fight World War I. William McGarvey (1843-1914)

He built extensive holdings in Russia and Romania and enjoyed

earliest regions of the Maritimes and Quebec, and his research includes mills that are still in business, or that have been repurposed as restaurants and bars, or hotels and historic sites. These days we take our daily bread for granted. We merely pick up a loaf at the grocery or corner store and think nothing of it. But in pioneer times, farmers had to carry their grain as many as 50 miles to be ground into flour. Then, they had to trek back home to make their bread. Milling culture was strong in Canada, and many towns sprang up where the mills were established. Come and enjoy a trip into life in the past. Class Size: Max. 25

Remembering the Royal Visit of 1939

In 1939 Canada stood transfixed as the new King and Queen embarked on their first Royal visit to Canada. The monarchy needed a boost after the abdication of King Edward VIII. Canada wanted to show off its new relationship with the Crown. Ironically the looming crisis that became WWII made this a ground-breaking event. Windsor had to fight for inclusion in the itinerary. The event was to become probably the largest gathering ever in the city. This course is designed to review the local aspects as well as the national scope of the visit. As it slips from living memory, it deserves a place in the era that became consumed by WWII. If you have any mementoes from the visit, please bring them to show the others. Class Size: Max. 24

China’s History Provides Clues for Its Quick Rise China is going to be the largest economy. In recent years it is upgrading industry with the aim to shift economy from basic consumer goods to high tech industries. Its endeavours cannot be taken lightly, since China is the home of some very important discoveries and inventions of mankind; paper, gunpowder, compass, printing, silk, tea and porcelain. Chinese civilization arose in valleys of Yellow River and Yangtze River with the early rice cultivation 8,000 years ago. People of Pre-historic China faced flooding of Yellow River, and continuous raids of tribes from Inner Asia. Chinese tackled these challenges by mobilizing masses in the form of gigantic civil engineering projects of building dikes to control mighty Yellow River and erecting Great Wall to stop incursion from the North. As one of the oldest living civilizations, one missionary student remarked, “China has the longest continuous history of any country in the world” with 3,500 years of written history. When history was started to be recorded during Shang Dynasty (1600 - 1046 BC) Chinese civilization was already old. In this course we will survey the history of China with emphasis on its technological advancement since ancient time. Class Size: Max 20 #1 Prehistory to Shang Dynasty (1046 BC) #2 Zhou Dynasty to Rise of Qin, the 1st Emperor (1046 BC – 206 BC) #3 Han Dynasty to Song Dynasty, the Golden Period (206 BC – 1279 AD) #4 Period of single dynasty from 13th Century to Present Time (1279 – 2019)

Art & Architecture: Romanesque and Gothic Periods Despite the efforts of Charlemagne, the centuries before the year 1000

were marked by the turmoil of barbarian invasions; urban civilizations

were gradually abandoned and replaced by rural societies. Christianity

with its strong administrative structure was the glue that held much of

Europe together. Communities required ever larger buildings for worship

and covering these larger spaces was the need for a vaulting system and

ultimately a dome. Thus, a new style, the Romanesque was born. As

building technology advanced and taller buildings arose, the much-desired

light flooded the interior resulting in the gothic style which was soon

adopted in northern Europe. In addition, during these years massive

numbers of people were on the move not as conquering tribes, but as

pilgrims seeking to visit holy places. Christianity now assumed a

prominent leadership role not only in the spiritual but also in the cultural

and political lives of people. Class Size: Max. 24 #1 Romanesque Art #2 Gothic Art #3 Byzantine Art #4 International Gothic Art

Pipe Organ Encounter: Learn by Doing

Pipe Organ encounters have been offered by the Royal Canadian College

of Organists for many years. The intention is to explain and demonstrate

how a pipe organ creates it beautiful music. The largest of all musical

instruments, it is shrouded in mystery. Often it and the organist are hidden

from view, adding to the mystique. This course de-mystifies the pipe organ

with a fresh two step approach. The first step is to build a pipe organ. A

small two octave two rank organ (don't know what a rank is? we will find

out!) was created by Ron Dossenbach in 2017-2018. We will take its 125

parts and put it together. Do you have 10 thumbs? No worries— it’s easier

than it sounds! All participants will have some hands-on involvement with

building the organ. It is a course requirement! There is something magical

about the tactile experience of learning by doing that multiplies the

learning experience. The second part is to experience another pipe

organ— the magnificent Karl Wilhelm organ at All Saints' Church. This 29

stop mechanical action organ operates in the same way as the simple little

organ we will have just built. The parallels are quite illuminating. The

session ends with an up-close look at its inner workings, and musical

selections that show off its tonal range. Class Size: Max. 15

Windsor Wheels In the first half of the 20th century, Windsor was home to over 20 auto

manufacturers, and could well claim the title of the town that put Canada

on wheels. By the 1930s that supremacy was already on the wane. By

the end of the decade, there was a resurgence as the Ford Motor

Company of Canada prepared for war, and mobilized to produce war

machines that kept Britain in the field of battle during the 1940s. Without

that effort, WWII might have had an entirely different outcome. By the

1950s though, the writing was on the wall for the car industry in Windsor.

Now, there is only one car manufacturer left, and the question is: How

long might that last? This course will look at the glory years and attempt

to explain what happened. Class Size: Max. 20
