If so, the Cruisin’ Along cavalcade, which stopped off for a night in Canowindra last week, would certainly like to hear from you. This was Cruisin’ Along’s sixth tour of the re- gion, raising funds for the Western Care Lodge in Orange, providing crucial accommodation and care for victims and their families from all over the region during cancer treatment. According to organiser Terry Davis, this year’s event was another big success, adding $55,000 to the $450,000 that it’s raised so far for the centre – most of it from fundrais- ing auctions and public donations in each of the eight towns it visited. But the number of Cruisers was down this year – only 18 cars, headed as always by Cruisin’ Along’s doyen, Orange’s mayor John Davis --compared with 34 participants last year who raised more than $80,000 in funds. The organisers had hoped to attract at least 50 volunteer drivers this year. So, Canowindra – how about it? As Terry Davis says, the annual tour promises “great scenery, great comradeship, great dinners in each town, and a valuable contribution to a worthy cause. “All you need is a sense of humour and a passion for a good time.” So check http://www.cruisin-along.org.au. “Cruisin’ Along” – Your Chance To Break Out And Support Cancer Care

Ever wanted to break out of the square and drive for a week around the Central West with stuffed toys, balloons, placards, coloured lights and musical horns festooning your car?And raise funds at the same time for cancer sufferers and their carers? If so, the Cruisin’ Along cavalcade, which stopped off for a night in Canowindra last week, would certainly like to hear from you. This was Cruisin’ Along’s sixth tour of the re-gion, raising funds for the Western Care Lodge in Orange, providing crucial accommodation and care for victims and their families from all over the region during cancer treatment. LettersDenial Aint Just a River in Egypt As I sat in the House of Reps listening to Bill Shorten’s Budget reply, I was staggered by the depth of denial. Labor still refuses to face facts. The tired rhetoric on more handouts, more duplication, more waste, is dangerous stuff for Australia. We are paying a billion dollars EVERY MONTH in interest on our debt. How could we use an extra billion dollars in Hume? Fix some roads, build teaching hospitals, open a university campus, all of the above. The Federal Government’s first Budget is tough, yes. But it’s what we need to get our economy back on track - and the Government is calling for a contribution from all of us. I accept that some may be concerned about aspects of the Budget and I am strong-ly encouraging people to pick up the phone, send me an email, or drop into my elector-ate offices, so that I can help ease any con-cerns - and clarify what’s happening and when. Many changes that were mentioned on Budget night won’t take effect for years.

More than ever, Australia needs strong leadership and strong economic manage-ment. We need to end the days of borrow and spend. This Budget also signals big new investment in infrastructure. There are positive opportu-nities for our communities from investments in medical research, higher education and in setting up more competitive industries. I will be taking the time in coming months to out-line these opportunities clearly, so that there is a broad understanding of the path we are on to a more sure and prosperous future.

Correction - Our article on Cabonne Coun-cil’s draft budget for 2014-15 in our last issue stated that the council won’t be tak-ing up a 2.3 percent rate rise allowed by the Independent Pric-ing and Regulatory Tribunal. We’ve been advised that’s not the case: rates definitely will go up by 2.3 per-cent but Cabonne, will not seek a rate in-crease above that.

Small Biz Bus Heading to Canowindra

Member for Dubbo, Troy Grant is encourag-ing local small businesses to take advantage of the expert business advice on offer when the Small Biz Bus visits Canowindra this May. Mr Grant said “Having the Small Biz Bus here gives local business operators a great oppor-tunity to get high quality advice and find out what services are available to assist them in the longer term,” The Small Biz Bus is a mobile advisory and information service for small businesses in NSW. It is funded by the NSW Government and managed by the Office of the NSW Small Business Commissioner. The Bus will be located in front of the Royal Hotel on Gaskill Street from 9:00am until 3:00pm on Wednesday 28 May. Small Business owners can access the support of expert advisers on the Small Biz Bus free of charge. Further to this initial visit, small business owners can engage these ex-pert advisers on an ongoing basis. “I am really pleased that we have this ser-vice available to help ensure our small busi-nesses get the support they need to thrive, which is essential to keeping the local econo-my strong,” Mr Grant said. To book an appointment on the Bus or to speak to your local Small Biz Connect advi-sor, call Central NSW BEC on 1300 134 359 or visit www.smallbusiness.nsw.gov.au/hop-on-the-small-biz-bus.

    THE INCOME TAX PROFESSIONALS

Monica Maguire of MDM Financial Services is holding a FREE seminar on retirement planning in Cowra on the 4th June at the Services Club from 6pm. This seminar will educate clients on the question – how much do you actually need to retire? It also will look at the recent changes in the Budget and also will look at Aged Care and some examples that sometimes it is bet-ter not to sell the family home when you go into Aged Care. It will also look at why super

is still the best way to save for retirement. “Superannuation is still the best way to save for retirement due to the tax advantages the Government provides” Monica Maguire says. MDM Financial Services is also holding a Luncheon on Business Succession Planning in Cowra on the 4th June. This is a great edu-cational lunch for business owners who are in partnership on business succession and also those who are looking to sell their busi-ness what are the Capital Gains Tax implica-

tions of selling your business. The presenter at both sessions is Justine Marquet who is a Technical Services Man-ager at AMP who has come from Sydney to facilitate these sessions. To get someone of Justine’s experience and calibre to country seminars is fantastic. We need to show our support and get strong numbers which would rival our City cousins. Please register your interest in the seminar to Kay Links on 02 6341 2309.

    Frequently asked question

What is the tax free threshold?

The tax-free threshold is the amount of mon-ey an Australian resident can earn before they pay income tax. This means if you earn less than $18,200 in a financial year, you do not need to pay income tax. If you earn more than $18,200 in a financial year, you will only pay income tax on your earnings over $18,200.

Winter is fast approaching with the start of June near. There are plenty of activities to do inside and out throughout the winter with-out freezing. Australian winters are beau-tiful especially in our rural areas where we experience four seasons. The leaves begin to turn orange and red before they fall leav-ing the trees bare. Occasionally we will ob-serve snowfall or sleet turning the outback into a white winter wonderland. The fog in the morning begins to thicken as dawn ap-proaches, making us want to stay in bed all day! It’s time to layer up and get out there to see what our beautiful country has to offer.

    Australian Winter brings you...

North Queensland’s winter sun - Make your friends jealous this winter by holidaying in North Queensland, with its balmy weather, palm trees and swimmable seas.

Snow Play on the slopes - Want to see a snow-capped mountain? During winter in Vic-toria, you’ll find hundreds of ski-runs across ten great alpine locations. There are also slopes in NSW including Thredbo and Mount Selwyn. Don’t worry, it isn’t that cold once you start skiing the slopes and your blood is pumping with the reflection of the sun off the white snow on your face. Make sure you wear plenty of sunscreen!

Western Australia’s wildflowers - Forget drab days and bleak landscapes. From June until September, more than 12,000 wild-flower species explode across the state. The temperature is a tad hotter than what we are used to in winter, so if you are look-ing for a somewhat mild winter escape, WA is perfect.

South Australian Desert adventure - This winter, challenge yourself by four wheel driv-ing the South Australian section of the vast, timeless Simpson Desert.

Tasmania’s winter secrets – Just a hop, skip and a jump over the ditch. Celebrate the solstice in Hobart or ski in Ben Lomond National Park. Trek the snow-coated high-lands of Cradle Mountain or snuggle fireside in a lodge in Wineglass Bay.

The picturesque Blue Mountains - Every year from June to August, thousands of peo-ple flock to the Blue Mountains for a peace-ful getaway with roaring fires, roast dinners, the city and the occasional snowfall. The Blue Mountains offers various tourist attrac-tions including the Cultural Centre and FJ Tours.

  • Business Tips

Why embrace change? As a business matures, things rarely stay the same. In times of change, business owners can lose sight of the values and goals that they began with, and may find themselves overwhelmed. Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Take stock and with a little effort and some flexible thinking new opportunities will pre-sent.

Get additional training. Employees are not the only ones who can benefit from training. We all can. If you are overwhelmed by a new piece of technology or software, or are feel-ing like changes in your industry are too diffi-cult for you to understand, make the time to seek help and learn how to adapt. An addi-tional benefit is that you stay on the cutting edge and may gain great exposure for your business.

Revisit your small business’s roots. The key to remaining grounded is reminding yourself that even though your business has changed, it didn’t happen overnight and there was a progression that took you from where you started out to where you are now. Revisit and celebrate the steps you took to develop your business.

Update your business plan. Most business owners only write a business plan when they are first starting out. If your business has changed in a way or if you are nostalgic, looking at your business plan is a great way to reconnect to the ideas you had when you first started. Cargo General Store Cath and Ben Brand are the proud manag-ers of the Cargo Store and have been for the past 2 years. They have just signed a new 2 year contract keeping them on as the Man-agers. One of the best things about working here says Cath is “Getting to talk to the locals all day and be-ing a part of the community.” The Cargo General Store is renowned for its takeaways especially the hamburgers, chicken schnitzel burgers and the chips. The takeaway is a big part of the business but they also act on behalf of Australia Post, sell grocery items, fuel and car needs, gas refills, ice, phone cards etc. Cath and Ben pride themselves on having local wears on con-signment in the store. One of the new items being fresh flowers. Cath and Ben have 3 other staff members that help out they are Cath’s mum Vicki, Ben’s mum Judy and part timer Makeala.

Condobolin definitely saved their best ef-forts for their game against Canowindra as they dominated the field and were able to bring the full time score to 22 - 6. Canow-indra’s Coach Michael French stated that the girls may not have gotten the result they wanted, although it was a very encouraging performance. A massive congratulations to Bonny Wythes for receiving Players Player, Bonny produced an incredible game, full of determination and making a big effort to ap-ply pressure to Condobolin. Youth League Canowindra vs. Peak Hill – Saturday 17th May A fiery start to the game as Peak Hill scored the first try. Jakes Wythes turned this around and scored the first try for the Tigers within the first 15 minutes of the game and Jayden Brown scored the second try for Canowin-dra. Fantastic effort by Canowindra’s lock Alex Willson, as his big breaks made enough ground for Bailey Kain to score the third try before half time. In the second half Jack Grant was able to score a try for Canowindra, fol-lowed by Bailey Kain’s second try for the day. Unfortunately Canowindra were defeated by Peak Hill 28 - 26 in a nail biting game. There were a few players injured, many unwell, al-though they all played with incredible heart. Congratulations to this week Players Player Alex Willson for his massive breaks that were pushed through by determination and perse-verance as he dominated the field.

Junior Rugby Union Under 7’s and Under 9 Canowindra Pythons The boys have been training hard. The un-der 9’s showed a huge improvement in skills and came off with a win and two other close games. The under 7’s again this season have a very eager team ranging from 4 year olds to 7year olds. All three games were played with great sportsmanship. Thank you to the coaches and all the par-ents for travelling to Wellington we will see you all at training on Friday and Cowra on Sunday

Rugby UnionCanowindra vs. Blayney Blayney were the dominant side in the first half scoring 5 tries. After half time the Py-thons showed a lot more dominance in the forwards. Luke Watt was able to intercept the ball and kick down field and out run the opposing winger and score another great solo try. Dan Bowd and Clint Oborn, were both disallowed tries that could have went either way, with the final score being 39-5. McClintocks best and fairest points went to Jack Beath who picked up 3 points and players player for playing a very aggressive game. 2 Points went to Captain Dan Bowd, 2 points also went to Ed Price and 1 point went to the other break away Clint Oborn. This weekend the boys have a home game with the CSU Aggies coming across from Or-ange. As always the ute bar and BBQ will be on the sideline. Game kicks off at 3:15pm.

Rugby League First Grade Canowindra vs. Condobolin – Sunday 18th May With players already suffering fatigue from the long travel, Canowindra started off slowly as Condobolin used this to their advantage. With only one injured reserve on the bench the Canowindra players each knew that they were in for a full game with minimum rest. Half time gave the players a break with the score being 18 - 0 Condobolin’s way. Canow-indra’s try trio was started by Brodie Friend as he gracefully scored the first try for the Tigers with 20 minutes to go. Adam Micalef make a break and run himself straight un-der the goal posts for the second try. Matty Mclean was able to also run the ball straight under the posts scoring the final try for the day. Full time score was 22 - 18 with Kain Earsman being awarded Players Player for his third consecutive week. Coach Dean Stanbury stated that he was very proud of the effort the boys made with the given circumstances, they all played ex-tremely well. A notable mention to Mick Ma-son who held three points and his Coach said he had his best game of the season.
