Set t ing Up the Sca nner

D o not im m ediately connect the scanner to the com puter after rem oving it from the

package. First inspect the package contents and then release the lock that

protected the scanner during transport.

Then, connect the scanner to the com puter follow ing the instructions in this

chapter and install the bundled softw are.

Please note that you m ust log on as an adm inistrator to install or delete softw are on

W indow s N T W orkstation 4.0 and W indow s 2000 Professional.

3. Unlock the Scanning Unit

The scanner is shipped w ith the scanning unit locked to prevent dam age duringtransport. You m ust unlock it to use the scanner.

1. Peel off the seal on the front of the scanner.

2. Gently turn the scanner over as illustrated.

This section explains how to install the softw are contained on the C D -RO M ontothe com puter.

Installation Procedures

1. Turn on the computer.

2. Place the CanoScan Setup Utility CD-ROM in the

computers drive.A fter a m om ent, the C anoScan Setup U tility w ill start and the M enuW indow w ill autom atically display.

4. Click the [Start Installation] button at the bottomright of the window.This w ill start the installation of all the application softw are. You can,how ever, control w hich program s are installed by clicking the checkbox beside the nam e of a program and deleting the [] check m arkbefore clicking the [Start Installation] button.

Be sure to install C anoC raft C S-P and ScanG ear Toolbox C S at the verym inim um .

Do not restart the computer or remove the CD-ROM from the drivewhile t he installatio n is proceeding unless so directed by t heCanoScan Setup Ut ilit y. These act ions wou ld d isrup t the installation .

Do not perform any other operations during t he installation. Do not click anything ot her than t he specified but tons or items.

5. Proceed with the installation by following theon-screen instructions.Restart the com puter as prom pted by the on-screen m essage after all

6. Testing the Scanner Operation

The follow ing instructions show you how to test the scanner and experim ent w ithtw o softw are program s. You w ill use ScanG ear Toolbox C S and C anoC raft C S-P.

1. Place your item on the document glass as illustrated.O pen the docum ent cover, orient the im age face dow n and align itstop edge w ith the alignm ent m ark at the front of the scanner.

Calibrati on is an adjustmen t process (taking appro ximat ely 1

m inu te) that allow s th e scanner t o reproduce the correct color

balance of t he scanned it em.

Calibratio n w ill aut omatically be performed t he first t ime the

scanner is used and th ereaf ter w hen it has been used a set number

of tim es.

W hen the calibration process com pletes, the preview scan w ill initiate,gradually presenting the im age in the preview w indow .

5. Specify the scan area.1. Rig ht-click the mouse.

If you are using C anoC raft C S-P for the first tim e since it w asinstalled, the scan area selection w ill be preset to the Letter/A 4size. Right-clicking the m ouse button cancels that selection.

2. Lef t-click a corner o f t he imag e a rea you w ish to sca n .

W hen you m ove the m ouse cursor over the preview area, ittransform s into the + cursor.

Precautions for Scanning at High ResolutionsPlease note that file sizes increase alm ost exponentially as the resolution israised w hen scanning in color m ode. Scanning at high resolutions m ay requirem ore tim e for scanning and im age processing. You are recom m ended to avoidraising the resolution beyond the m inim um requirem ent to scan in color m ode.

Resolution Guidelines

For uploading to a w eb site or view ing on a com puter m onitor, choose 75 dpiFor scanning print photos and m agazine clippings, choose 150 - 300 dpiFor printing on a inkjet printer, choose a resolution approxim ately half theprinters rating (180 dpi, 360 dpi, 720 dpi)

A resolution of 1200 dpi is effective for scanning relatively sm all originals thatw ill be blow n up to larger sizes for printing (i.e. blow ing up a 3.5 x 5 in. im age

The Scanner and the Printer Cannot Be Operatedat the Sam e Time

The scanner and printer both use the sam e parallel port, m aking it

im possible to scan during printing or print during scanning. A ttem pting toinitiate a scan w hile printing w ill cause the [Printer Port is used by anotherdevice.] m essage to display. U nder certain conditions, initiation of a scancom m and m ay succeed during a print job, but the printing operation m aycease and result in a printer error.

Using Window s Printing System (WPS) PrintersW indow s Printing System com patible printers, such as C anon BJC -610W ,BJC -620W , LBP-460 and LBP-660 m odels, w ill not operate properly w henconnected via the scanner. To use such printers, directly connect the printerto the com puters parallel port and alternate w ith the scanner as required.

How to Disable the Epson Printer Window

1. C lick the [Start] button on the W indow s taskbar and select [Program s]and [W indow s Explorer].

2. U se W indow s Explorer to navigate to the [W indow s], [Start M enu],[Program s], and [StartU p] folders and delete the [Epson Printer W indow ]icon.

2. Parallel Port Settings

The scanner driver for your scanner can detect your parallel port settings and

autom atically sw itch the operating m ode to a high-speed m ode (this is referred tobelow as the parallel port auto settings function.) Using the parallel port DM Atransm ission function, it also enhances the scanning speed. Consequently, there is achance that the parallel port auto settings function and DM A transm ission function m ayfail w ith the hardw are configuration of som e com puters, the scanner m ay not operatecorrectly or the processing speed m ay becom e exceptionally slow . If this occurs, follow

the procedures below to adjust the scanner driver settings or your parallel port settings.Users running the W indow s NT W orkstation 4.0 or W indow s 2000 Professionaloperating system that encounter this problem should follow the procedures in the topicentitled How to A djust the Settings if the Scanner is O perating Too Slow lyon page40 since that O S does not support the parallel port auto settings function or DM Atransm ission function.

How to Adjust the Settings if the Scanner is NotOperating Correctly (Windo w s 95/98 only)

1. Place the C anoScan Setup U tility CD -RO M in the drive.

2. C lick the [D isplay the C D -RO M C ontents] button.

If the problem persists, continue w ith the follow ing steps to turn off the

parallel port auto settings item as w ell.

1. Repeat steps 1 to 5 on page 39 to start the C anon Scanner U tility again.

2. C lick off the parallel port auto settings item and click the [O K] button.(Leave the D M A setting off.)

3. Rem ove the CanoScan Setup U tility C D -RO M from the drive, and restart

your com puter.The new settings w ill take effect after you have restarted the com puter.

3. Before Transporting the Scanner

A lw ays lock the scanning unit by pushing the lock sw itch tow ard the lock m ark

before m oving or transporting the scanner.

1. Disconnect the AC adapter and cables from thescanner.

2. Confirm that the scanning unit is at the front ofthe scanner.If the scanning unit has not returned to the hom e position, ensurethat there are no item s on the docum ent glass (platen), close thedocum ent cover and then connect the A C adapter. C heck to see that

the scanning unit has correctly returned to the front of the scanner,then disconnect the A C adapter.

4. Care and Maintenance

C lean off the dirt and dust that adheres to the exterior, docum ent glass and

docum ent cover of the scanner during the course of ordinary operation using thefollow ing procedures.

1. Disconnect the AC adapter and cables from thescanner.

2. Dampen a clean, soft cloth with water and wringthe cloth well. Use the well-wrung cloth to gentlyremove dirt and dust.Do not dam pen the connectors, ports or other m etallic com ponents

on the scanners back panel. Im m ediately rem ove any m oisture thatcontacts these com ponents by w iping them w ith a dry cloth.Do not use a sodden cloth or apply a liquid directly to any portionof the scanner. A ny m oisture that enters the interior, the undersideof the docum ent glass or the sensors m ay degrade im age qualityand lead to m alfunctions.
