2.5.4 Setting the EEPROMThe EE PROM on t he logic board s tores th e total amou nt of waste ink a bsorbed ,

fu nction sett ings, an d oth er informat ion sp ecific to the pr inter. For this reas on, be

awa re of th e followin g wh en s ervicing the p rint er.

1) Before repair

You can check th e data s tored in th e EEPROM by performing the tes t print or

EEPROM informat ion p rint for s ervicing. In par ticu lar, th e nu mb er of total sh eets

pas sed will give a good idea of how frequen tly th e printer ha s b een u sed.

2) After logic boa rd replacem en t

Visually check the waste ink absorber's ink level following the procedures in Part 3:

2.5 Setting the Waste Ink Counter (Page 3-11), and replace the absorber or se t the

coun ter as n ecessary. The coun ter can be set to 0% (Reset), 25%, 50%, and 75%.

The EEPROM data of a replacement logic board is not defined. After replacing the

logic board, you m u st a lways reset th e EEPROM, check th e waste-ink abs orber, setthe ink counter , se t the model na me, and adjus t th e head pos i t ion.

3) After was te ink a bsorber replacement

After replacing the waste ink absorber following an ink-full warning or error, reset

the was te ink counter .

Previous EEPROM dat a can not be checked from the S ervice Mod e once the

EEPROM ha s b een r eset . Always perform th e check before resett ing th e

EEPROM. All informa tion s u ch a s fu nction s ta tu s, nu m ber of sh eets

pas sed, waste ink a mou nt , etc ., except for the USB serial nu m ber, will be

lost wh en t he E EPROM is res et . It is not p ossible to write dat a, su ch a sfun ct ion s ta tus an d th e nu mb er of shee ts pa ssed, of the old EEPROM to

th e n ew EEPROM.

This pr in ter presu mes tha t the ink fu ll a la rm / error does n ot occur b efore

th e life of th e printer h as b een reach ed. However, depend ing on th e us age

conditions, s u ch a s frequ ency of powering on/ off an d frequ ency of th e BJ

cartridge replacemen t, the waste ink a m oun t varies . As a resu lt , the

frequen cy of th e alarm/ error also varies .

The ink fu ll a la rm occurs when th e absorbed ink am oun t appr oaches a

limit . In th is case, althou gh you ca n opera te the printer again by pressing

th e RESUME button, th e in k full error will occu r in th e end . (At th at t ime,you ca n n o longer continu e operat ion by pressing the RESUME button.)

1. TECHNICAL REFERENCE

1.1 Functions of the Paper Feed UnitThis printer s u pports 2 pap er feeding meth ods: au toma tic feeding from th e Au to Sheet

Feeder (ASF) an d m an u al feeding from the ma nu al pap er-feed s lot . The ASF, driven byth e paper feed m otor, feeds pa per au toma tically.

Manu al feeding tak es precedence over au toma tic feeding; you ca n feed pa per m an u ally

even wh en pa per is set in th e ASF.

When pap er is detected by the ph oto-interru pter type paper en d sen sor, it is fed to the

print s tar t posit ion on t he p laten via the pa per feed rollers .

Although pap er ha s been fed by the p ick-u p roller, if it can not be d etected by the pap er

end sens or, an au xiliary fu nction of this p rinter reat temp ts feeding. If th e pap er s t i ll

can not b e detected, a pa per feed error will occur.

1.2 Carriage FunctionThe carriage of th is printer is m oved ba ck a nd forth horizonta lly by th e carriage belt ,

which is driven b y the car riage motor, a DC motor.

This printer h as n o sensor to detect the carr iage 's h ome posit ion. The en coder sensor,

mou nt ed on th e carriage board , enab les control of th e carriage posit ion by reading datafrom the en coder film, ass u ming th e init ial posit ion b eing where th e carriage cont acts

1.3 Purge Unit FunctionsThe p u rge un it , u sing the bu ilt-in pu rge motor, carries ou t th e following operations:

hea d-capp ing, head-wiping, ink-su ction, a nd ASF-driving. The pu rge un it switches over

th e drive for th ese operations by reversing th e direction of motor rotation, an d a lso by

u sin g the dr ive selector lever. If th e pu rge motor rotates in th e forward direction wh ile th e carriage is a t th e capping

posit ion, h ead-capp ing and hea d-wiping are carried out. In th is case, the wiper moves

in th e direction in which n ozzles ar e placed. If the p u rge motor rotates in the r everse

direction while th e head is cap ped, ink-su ction is carried out. For th e su ction

opera t ion, a pu mp with a tub e is u sed.

To drive th e ASF, th e carriage moves t o the left , pa ssing th e capp ing posit ion a nd

rotates th e pu rge motor in th e reverse direction.
