The USCA Nationals in Hanoverwere both a racer’s and a spectator’sfeast — from the Ledyard Boathouse, where the starts took place, down-stream beneath the road bridge, where crowds gathered to watch thejockeying for early position, to theupstream turnround where, perchedon rocks, race followers got a close-up view of paddlers testing their ownand each other’s technical skills andstrategies setting up for, and fightingtheir way around, the buoys.

President’s Message. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Kelly Wypych

I arrived in Hanover Monday night, the daybefore sprints, and set up my tent in my shad-ed but steamy campsite at Storr’s Pond. I had

just spent three days with my nieces (four girls aged 3 through 7)and I was becoming aware of the fact that no amount of paddle-sports training really prepares one for that many cartwheels (letalone being a human jungle gym.) Blissful in the knowledge thatmy siblings need only breed once more to complete my dream of“Auntie Kelly’s Outrigger Team”, I unpacked my bedroll andcontemplated the week ahead.

Two weeks earlier I had started my New Job. My colleagues atwork found it a bit odd that I would be taking a vacation after justgetting through the door. I informed them that I had an obligationto attend a very important International Event - one that simplycouldn’t be missed.

Was I ever right! This year’s Marathon Nationals featured:

Record Breaking attendance. Personally speaking, it was athrill to sit on the start line of the C2 Women’s race knowing thatbetween the open and master’s class there were over 60 teamsparticipating. (The mixed and men’s C2 starts made theConnecticut River look like the ocean!)

More Youth Paddlers in one place than I’ve ever seen. Andthey didn’t just race amazingly well, they participated in USCA atthe highest level — developing ideas for the future of youth pad-dling and submitting a petition to the delegates that suggestedchanges to our competition rules. Miranda Robinson of NewYork found an ambiguity in our competition rules and filed aprotest that will force USCA to clarify its policy on PFD use. These examples of active participation on competitive and admin-istrative levels show a promising future for our organization.

World-class amenities to make the event a paddler’s dream-come-true. We had day care. We had fast computerized timingand results. We had Ben & Jerry’s. We had “free” world classsports massage (donation only!). We had a shady grove, a profes-sional boat house, hot showers, and delicious food available at thesite. We had a professional video tour of the course playinginside the boathouse, and detailed course maps on display. Wehad the best DJ’s and sound system! We had entertainingannouncers for all events. Despite record turn out, we had “on-time” events. We had more photo-finishes than I’ve ever seen atone event. We even had terrific weather!

A tasty pasta dinner, and a speedy semiannual meeting.Delicious food and terrific company made this year’s dinner a realtreat. The bonus for all the delegates was the speedy but effectivemeeting. Helped along by the fact that the caterers needed themeeting room back to set up for a wedding, USCA delegatesmoved swiftly through the agenda with a focus on sticking tobusiness, making decisions, and assigning work to be done priorto the January meeting. Pat your delegate on the back for work-ing well under pressure!

Being a part of this year’s marathon nationals were a challenge, apleasure, and a real treat. Those of you who were there know this. For the rest of you, you don’t know what you’re missing!

Executive Director’sMessage. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . John Edwards

A paddler’s (and Executive Director’s) per-spective of the 2002 Nationals:

I don't think anyone can remember when there was such a throngof enthusiastic paddlers at our Nationals. The New England pad-dlers devoted their time to make this event come off without ahitch (minor things don't count!). My hat is off to Chris andMarc Wilson, Trish and Peter Heed and family, and to TomWarner and Tom Walton (who spent countless hours inputtingthe computer with results), Paula Thiel, Dede Herlihy and DickUlbrich to mention just a few that devoted weeks of their livesjust make sure things progressed as smoothly as possible whilethe rest of us just had to try and prepare for the events. Some ofthem even raced!!!

You know, when Nationals are run as well as this one was, it setsthe bar at an even higher level for the next hosts to attain. I thinkthat the USCA needs to find a better way to ensure that theNationals are run this well every time.

On another note, I had a lot of people thanking me for the$5000.00 donation but I would like to clear up the reasoning orrationale for the donation. As part of being elected to theExecutive Director position there was a salary to go along with it.Jim Mack had been the Executive Director since God was slainon the cross (maybe a slight exaggeration) but to my knowledgehe had never taken any salary for that position. He took expens-es but not salary.

The USCA was able to keep Jim’s salary for many years andsince there was a positive cash flow, the treasury has a significantamount in reserves. This may not always be possible. I remem-ber when I was president of the USCA we were always livinghand to mouth and didn't have the luxury of paying anybody. Weeven had to stop having a glossy cover on the Canoe Newsbecause of lack of funds.

At present we still have a good insurance program that is compet-itive (as long as we don't have any claims against us) and this iswhere the excess money has come from to be able to pay anExecutive Director if we wish.

I wasn't going to take the "salary" but then I thought that we need-ed to try and raise the level of competition at our Nationals to thatof any other Canoeing event being held. So, I "donated" theUSCA's money to try and help in this regard.

The results were fantastic and although no one can know for sure,I happen to think it worked. I plan on doing the same thing nextyear as long as the organization can afford the expenditure.

So please don't be thanking me for the donation. Its the USCA'smoney so thank yourselves for supporting our organization dur-ing the year by being a member, volunteer, recruiter, etc., and inusing the insurance program that we have in place as that's wherethe money came from in the first place.

(P.S. there was some dispute on how the money was elected to bedistributed but we can fix that at the next annual meeting so tellyour delegate what your thoughts are!).

In Appreciation of Ann Behling. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Jim Mack

Upon hearing that Ann has retired from her position with CanoeNews it gives me a great deal of pleasure to congratulate her forher outstanding contributions and dedication she has made toUSCA. USCA has benefited from Ann’s expertise and creativi-ty. Her work ethics provided a role model for all committee mem-bers to follow. She worked endless hours in perfecting each issueof Canoe News magazine as her heart and soul was dedicated toprovide the best possible news for all of our members.

Among her other duties in USCA, her work both as NationalsTiming Chair and, with her husband, Jay (National’s SprintChair) was always professional, positive and efficient.

In her spare time at the Nationals you would find her helping outwith membership, awards, registration and being available to helpin any way she could. Ann also raced canoes, camped, wasextremely helpful in USCA’s Guinness World Record setting, andbest of all a terrific mother and wife to her family.

Her outstanding leadership abilities, technical skills, enthusiasm, positive attitude, high moral values, dedication to excellence, andconcern for others have definitely contributed to strengthen ourAssociation.

I have greatly missed working with a terrific friend — Ann, andher family.

A Note from the Editor. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Gareth Stevens

This issue has been put out at high speed in order to mail it in timefor the Alumimum Nationals. I have learned that I need to workfurther ahead for both USCA National Championships. JimDecker of Warren, PA: we have already talked! Ken Gerg ofEmprium, PA: you’ll hear from me soon!

This issue would not have been possible without the help of all thepeople who responded so quickly to my pleas for writing, photos, help with identifying racers, and so forth. Thank you all whoreceived my frantic e-mails and phone calls, and gave your time.

Doug Fraser took many excellent photographs and provided highquality scans, delaying, I suspect his weekend departure for moreenjoyable activities. Take a look at all his wonderful photos — incolor, natch — on his web site: http://thayer.dartmouth.edu/~marc/photos/dougs_thumbs.html

Jan Whitaker, Robert Altman, Larry Liquori and JimDipelesi, among others (forgive me for not naming you all) spenttheir valuable time to download photos and identify people I didnot recognize. And, thanks to all who wrote! Now read and enjoy.

Ann Behling Steps Down. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Kelly Wypych

After nearly a decade of taking care of USCA's Canoe News, AnnBehling is stepping down!

We are grateful to Ann for maintaining excellence in coordinat-ing and laying out each issue of Canoe News, often working sin-gle-handedly to painstakingly layout the magazine. Ann's dedi-cation has kept Canoe News alive and well, and has servedUSCA's communications needs. She has consistently gone out ofher way to provide the best possible service for USCA members.

So as USCA's Canoe News began to feel the tug of electronicpublishing and automated layout techniques (things that are out-side of Ann's immediate interests) I wondered, "How will wemake sure our dedicated volunteers are happy as we realign thiseffort." Always a professional, Ann said, "Kelly, let me make thiseasy for you." Ann's proactive willingness to "pass the baton"and support USCA's attempt to try new things is beyondadmirable. It shows us her professional, selfless, supportive spir-it that has made her USCA efforts so valuable.

Ann continues to support Canoe News with ideas for the future. As she sets aside printer, scissors, and tape she continues to pro-vide recommendations.

Ann's ideas to involve personal stories from members, to promoteawareness of issues relating to waterways and watercraft regul-tions, to include reviews of equipment, and to recommend sever-al "special series" that get our readers to look forward to the nextissue will be incorporated into future plans for Canoe News andwe hope she keeps coming up with more!

THANK YOU ANN!

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Peter and Tricia Heed

The 2002 Nationals at DartmouthCollege in Hanover, NH marked amajor resurgence in participation atthe USCA premier event. It was arace organized by paddlers for pad-dlers. The response was overwhelm-ing. Having 600 plus paddlers in thesame place to compete and so manyfamilies making the trip to NH theirsummer vacation, was above andbeyond what we dreamed of in theplanning stages.

You only had to look above the start-ing line before the men's C1 events tobecome aware of the difference.More than 200 C1's milled aroundlike so many ants. Then somehowthey formed up to go off in organ-

ized waves of approximately fifty boats. It was another Kodakmoment - a sight not soon to be forgotten.

It was also a year when new young talent stepped up to take aplace in the highly competitive limelight. Friday's dramatic C2open men's finish came right down to the wire, and the youngteam of Steve Corlew and Jacob DuBois showed their elders alittle something about sprinting. Like a breath of fresh air, the twoyoung men from Michigan impressed everyone with their enthu-siasm and obvious love for the sport.

A real highlight was the return of so manypaddlers who have not participated inNationals in years as personified by CindyLynch and Court McDermott. A recordnumber of young paddlers turned out to racein the youth sprints, demonstrating that theUSCA is developing up and coming talent totake the place of us older racers.

Nationals was the way it should be andhopefully will continue to be in the future.None of the success would have been possi-ble without the dedicated work of the coregroup and countless volunteers. Thank youeveryone who attended and made all of theefforts worth while.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Kelly Wypych

It was heart warming to hear the kind words and compli-ments at the close of this year’s Marathon Nationals.Paddlers from Nova Scotia to Texas appreciated theintense competition resulting from record-breakingattendance. As we looked around at the well-run com-petition, the beautiful Connecticut River and picture per-fect Hanover, it was clear that this was a first rate eventin every way. What was not always apparent was theseamless way in which the event hosts and volunteersprepared each day, and handled every problem so that wecould just show up and paddle!

A tremendous amount of behind the scenes work wasdone to make this event happen. Volunteers worked tire-lessly to get those boat numbers on a table every morn-ing, to track the times, classes and the multitude ofdetails needed to follow each paddler from start throughawards. Conducting this event without a hitch was backbreaking work. It’s the willingness of individuals to do

this work that makes our sport a success. Please join me in thank-ing those who made it all work. NECRA’s efforts made the day.

Their Nationals Committee made sure that the administrativetrench work held up to record crowds and all their enthusiasm. Thepeople "behind the green curtain" deserve sincere and copiousthanks. Many NECRA members sacrificed their own competitiveinterests to “be there” for the rest of us. These are the individualswho did not leave race headquarters until the next day was squared

away. From the amount of work done, Iwould have bet that Trish Heed, KarenLevitt, Tom Walton and Tom Warner sleptthere. Chris Wilson and Marc Lessard like-ly tucked them in. Enough cannot be saidabout the competent, dedicated, reliable, jobdone by Chris and Marc. They are truly“Paddlers of the Year.” I think all would agreethat Peter Heed’s professional announcingthroughout the event is on par with the bestfrom Monday night football. Dede Herlihy'spasta dinner came off even better than prom-ised and yet again, Priscilla Reinertsenorganized a wonderful awards ceremony. Somany people contributed to this event.

I am only naming a few! So many peoplecontributed to all the corners of this greatweek of paddling that I fear my list will notbe complete! Thanks Abby, Bill, Dick, Sean,

Paula, Ray - and to all the folks who volunteered to fetch lunch-es, help with timing and registration - you all know who you are!

And thanks to Robert Altman for donating his remarkable mas-sage services.

Thanks to the businesses and individuals who contributed cashand goods in support of this event!

Thanks also go to all of you who came out to compete. I enjoyedseeing the happy faces of people who were as busy connectingwith each other on land as they were competing on the water. What a great time!

Hanover whipped us up strong, erratic, gusty winds for the sprintson Tuesday. One minute a strong tail wind, the next, calm. Thena head wind out of hell followed suddenly by a three-quarter tailwind. It was hard enough on some of the heavier paddlers!

Regardless, the huge turnout for sprints was a sign of the recordnumbers to follow for the marathon events later in the week.

their boats, and to keep the difficulty of the event at a level suchthat everyone had fun. Throughout the race Peter Heed providedinteresting and enthusiastic commentary over the public addresssystem whenever the racers were near the start/finish line makingit fun for racers and spectators alike. Despite the staggered starts, the race often ended with two or more teams sprinting for the fin-

ish, which added excitement to the event. As a result many racersthought that this orienteering event was the best USCA NationalsOrienteering race that they had ever entered.

The course layout and the surrounding landscape was not onlygreat for spectators, but it also allowed racers to find the controlpoints using whatever means they thought would be fastest. AimsConey and J-J Coté, who had the fastest time of the day, alongwith many of the experienced orienteerers, chose to separate andhave one teammate run to some control points. This was particu-larly important at a control located under a bridge over a smallbrook. What the runners didn’t know was that the brook was deepand that they would have to tread water while trying to punchtheir control cards, turning this event into an unexpected triathlon. The second fastest team, Steve Corlew and Jacob DuBois (whowere clearly the fastest paddlers in the race and later went on to

On the morning of August 7, 2002, 33 racersregistered to compete in the 2002 USCANational Canoe / Kayak OrienteeringChampionships held this year in Hanover New

Hampshire. The mix of talent entering this year was incrediblydiverse. Entrants included people with past experience at the

USCA Nationals Orienteering events and newcomers to the sport.Paddling skill levels ranged from true novices to expert.Orienteering skills, which were key to success in this event, alsovaried widely. Regardless of their qualifications everyone wasenthusiastic, and expectations were high as the pre race instruc-tions were given, the drawing for starting order was held and theboats were staged at the waterfront. They weren’t disappointed.

For people who’ve never tried orienteering, it involves usingmaps to find markers (called control points) hidden along theshoreline. There are punches at the control points that makeimprints on “punch sheets” carried by each team to document thefact that the control point has been located. The team that findsall the control points in the fastest time wins. The 2002Orienteering course was set up to make it as fair as possible, toselect control points that avoided unusual hazards for the racers or

win the C2 Men Marathon race on Friday), stuck to the canoeroutes but were not able to overcome the effective strategy cho-sen by Coney and Coté.

Strategy and determination also played a particularly importantrole at the end of the race for Karl Stephens. Karl wasn’t thefastest paddler but he is a very experienced orienteerer and hisingenuity and uncommon determination was the highlight of therace. Paddling in a borrowed C1 racing canoe, Karl was havingdifficulty making headway into the wind and current to get to thelast hidden control point. Recognizing that he was losing time,Karl choose to portage his boat a half mile along a road parallelto the Connecticut River to a point where he could more easilypaddle to the remaining control he needed to find. While pad-dling downstream from there to get to his final stop directlyacross the river from the finish (this control point was not hiddenand really just served to make the finish more interesting), wind, fatigue and a lack of time in his borrowed boat caused Karl to tip.

At this point he choose to walk along the steep bank in waist deepwater until he reached the final control and then reentered hisboat. Now the finish was in sight, but he needed to cross the riversafely. Again the wind came into play and Karl could not keepthe bow of his boat from pointing directly upstream. Withuncommon balance and determination, and with the urging of theentire crowd and Peter Heed on the microphone, Karl paddledhis boat backward in a wide arc all the way to the dock. His over-all effort and unusual finish drew the biggest applause of the day.

Thursday still had some gusts of wind to challenge the paddlers, especially the very light paddlers. “Austin (Hoefs) span like atop,” I heard someone remark. Still, it was a day of great chal-lenge, bravery and fun. The adults enjoyed the event as much as(more, in some cases) than the kids and youth. All can be proudof their achievements and treasure the memories that their tro-phies and medals carry with them.

The wind had subsided by Friday, and this, and following threedays of weather were near perfect for the marathon events.Scouting (or prior knowledge of the course) paid off. It washandy to know where the fast and slow waters were, the weeds, the suck, the shallows. The large turnout of racers enhanced bothcompetition, and the enjoyment of the events.

The Texas Canoe Racing Association is the State HostOrganization

Recent races of East Texas River Runners Race in 2002 haveincluded:

August 3 - Neches River Wilderness Race - 22 miles (tough)

August 24-Texas Aluminum Championship - Trinity River(Same course as National) 15 miles

The Neches River Wilderness is one of the toughest flat waterraces in the state. “Old Aluminums”, unlimited solo’s andkayak, and sit on tops do OK too. Lots of obstacles – no cur-rent. This is a fundraiser for a college scholarship.

All of our races are well organized, with people shuttle, EMS,National Guard, Sheriff’s Dept, security at parking, drag boat, hamburgers, drinks, water melon, medals and t-shirts. We usual-ly have some sprint racing on a nice lake the day after thewilderness race.

This is a very rural county, 1065 square miles. County seat,Palestine - population 26,000 - There are only 55,000 people inthe whole county. This part of Texas is rolling hills, ranch landwith oak and pine forest. The Neches River is on our east sideand the Trinity is on the west. Both are unrestrained duringflood season, fairly tame during August and September. Thereare no homes or development of any king along either river. Allyou will hear is the sound of your paddle and the sound of acompetitor breathing down your back.

In our Neches Race we normally draw 20 to 30 aluminum boatsannually out of 50 to 65 total participants. We expect 40 to 50aluminums for the Nationals.

Like Glen Green, I started paddling a Grumman in the 50's toget my canoeing merit badge in Angola, New York. I’m 58 nowand I still believe aluminum is the heart and soul of paddlesports. Most of us older guys started with aluminum and itsonly fitting to finish with aluminum. Lets keep this divisionalive and strong - ya’ll come

Aluminum is the one level of paddle sports where the boats areall equal and the race is won by the people in the boat ratherthan technology or design.

I know one when I see one. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Kelly Wypych

Early this paddling season I got a call from fellow New York pad-dler Pam Fitzgerald. She said, “Hey Kelly, I’ll race “Run of theCharles with you.” Sounded good to me. I had been looking fora pro women’s partner and could think of none better than Pam.Pam needed to hold off until her doctor gave her the OK as shehad had some surgery in February and needed to heal up. Pamhas had surgery before due to a severe break in her wrist. She hadonce been a world-class Judo champion, but this wrist injury andsubsequent “fusing” of her wrist ended her Judo career. Luckily, her wrist position works out reasonably well for paddling. I fig-ured that her wrist must have needed a tune up . . .I met up with Pam to paddle in mid-March. We met “halfway”,near Utica NY and paddled for about 3 hours on “Roberta’sRiver.” It felt pretty good - fast and smooth. When we were put-ting the boat up, I said, “Hey Pam, did you change your hair orsomething?” Pam responded, “Well, I did have brain surgery fiveweeks ago...”

Pam’s level of dedication is pretty stunning to me. What wouldmake some of us stagger off to be pampered triggered a level ofmotivation in Pam that allowed her to be, despite serious injury, the finest and fittest that she could be. Pam struggled this season

18

with fatigue, severe headaches, vision problems, muscle cramps, and a host of challenges caused by her surgery and treatment. Herheroic ability to rise above challenges and perform as the elitepaddler that she is is both inspiring and commendable.

Pam - You go girl! You’re a paddling hero!

USCA Nationals: Outrigger and Adaptive PaddlingUSCA Demonstration Outrigger CanoeRace Winners. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Jan Whitaker

Four teams of paddlers from SportsNet, a division of RochesterRehabilitation Center, and one youth from Association for the Blindand Visually Impaired (ABVI-Goodwill Industries of GreaterRochester, Inc.) participated in the demonstration outrigger canoe

sprint races, clearly illustrating the ability of paddlers with disabili-ties to compete in the sport and the need for organizations to provide“a sporting chance*”. Paddlers with paraplegia, cerebral palsy, ampu-tation, fibromyalgia and lack of vision were included on the teams. The paddlers’ abilities were evident, their disabilities were not, whenthey were seated and racing.

The men, women and youth who raced on the integrated teams ofpaddlers with and without physical disabilities are pioneers in a sportthat many people around the world now believe merits inclusion inParalympic Games. Their names can be listed among the winners butso too, should the names of all the paddlers and spectators who wit-nessed the event and future paddlers who will have new paddlingopportunities because someone who attended the races was inspiredto take the initiative to help start new programs You can assist in thisproject by offering your time and expertise in paddling, as an individ-ual or as a member of a canoe racing organization, to interested reha-bilitation agencies and membership organizations of people with dis-

abilities such as regional chapter of National Spinal Cord InjuryAssociation, Amputee Coalition, etc.

The SportsNet paddlers look forward to competing against other inte-grated teams such as AccesSportAmerica in Massachusetts, an organ-ization that added outrigger canoeing to their program of water sportsfor the disabled this summer and hopefully will compete in nextyear’s races in Warren, Pennsylvania.

The USCA extends thanks to Blake Conant, President of the East

Coast Outrigger Racing Association, for transporting Manu’iwa’sOC-6 to Hanover and for organizing the race schedule so paddlerscould have the opportunity to race at a National Championship event.

Special thanks also to the Ledyard Canoe Club, Dartmouth Collegeand Brian Kunz for the planning, funding and installation of newhandicap accessible dock and to Marc Lessard for assembling thegroup that worked on this project. Very special thanks also to BrianKunz for providing accessible van transportation to and from thenew docks.

* “A Sporting Chance” is the title of a Winston Churchill TravelingFellowship report prepared by John Court studying world-wide bestpractice in outrigger canoeing programs for people with additionalphysical, intellectual, emotional and social needs. Court participat-ed in the 2001 USCA Demonstration Outrigger Canoe Races inGainesville where he read a statement from the British Canoe Uniondeclaring their support for the vision of the sport in ParalympicGames.

Parting Shot. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Gareth Stevens

It was a week full of good humor, keen and comradely competi-tion. People could not say enough good to me about their experi-ence, the excellent organization, and the open friendliness withwhich everone treated everyone. Holm Schmidt, a coach andpaddler from Gainesville, Georgia, made a point of telling mehow much he appreciated the whole occasion and its atmosphere.

“It compares very well with other national competitive events Ihave been to,” he said. “Some teams and some groups are cliqueyand stand-offish. There is none of that here. I like it very much.”

That has been my own experience of the whole sport of marathonpaddling and its people since I came into it four years ago.

We have had a good time all together in Hanover. We competedhard. I loved it. I didn’t want to leave . . . and neither did my car.

South Bend PaddleFest 2002. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Rich Hodgkins

The current pushed my kayak. I fought to keep it upright and notdo a full circle roll. Bracing on the right than the left, I broughtit under some control. My body was doing the dreaded Jell-Oshake as I sat in an eddy. My nerves were shot. The strong chaot-ic crosscurrents had made me thinking twice about doing the raceon Sunday.

I had traveled 3 hours from Chicago to South Bend Indiana. Therace was advertised as PaddleFest 2002. A middle ear infectionwas still bothering me but I had raced with pain before. If thisrace were as good as the advertisements, it would be worth it.The purse for the C1 canoe race was $1000. Perennial NationalC1 Champion, Calvin Hassel, would be on hand to take most ofthat money. The other places would be up for grabs. Therewould however be no money in my class (kayak). It would justbe for the glory of being #1.

The morning of the race I watched in silence as paddlers took offtheir sleek canoes and kayaks from the roof racks of their cars.My own kayak sat on my Yakima car rack. It would stay therefor the rest of the day. This would be a picture taking day for meand not a racing day. My ear infection had made me lose anysense of balance. There was no way I would be able to make itthrough the tricky currents of the St. Joe River. A hard, but rightdecision.

This was the first running of PaddleFest. I had seen the press

and kayak race in the state of Indiana.

There would be four races. The first and the one with all the prizemoney would be the Moosejaw 16-mile marathon. The moneyhowever was for only the C1 Class. I wonder why? After thoseboats went off a 2-mile fun race would be held along with a cor-porate challenge race. In the small frog pond, impromptu sprintswere setup for the kids. A 26-foot voyageur canoe sat along a pierto give spectators rides during the race. I‘m used to coveringcanoeing events but this race would be a challenge to photograph.

I wanted to get a picture of everything. My main emphasis how-

releases and was impressed. I saw the ads for the race every-where. When I went to the web site I was dumbstruck (www.pad-dlefest.org). All the race directors I knew had been lucky to pickup a local sponsorship. These people were getting the big onesand it was their first race. Subaru, Moosejaw, and Fluid Fun, (acanoe and kayak shop) led the list of sponsors.

I had met the race director, Pat Sawyer, two years before. Hewas just switching from racing kayaks to C1 canoes. I wasswitching from C1’s to kayaking. He had a used K-1 for sale andI had 6 C1 paddles to get rid of. Pat and his wife Nancy werenow going to put on one of the biggest, if not the biggest, canoe

ever would be centered on the marathon. I had scouted the riverthe day before and knew how to get to all the best spots. Theriver was just short of flood stage. The Railroad Bridge and theupstream turn around would give most of the paddlers a very dif-ficult time. It could also make for some very interesting photos. If a boat was turned in the strong current, it might cost them theirboat.

After the pre-race meeting, I laid out my plan. I would first takesome pictures of the start and then follow the race up and downthough South Bend. All other pictures would have to wait untilthe marathon was over.

The gun sounded, the boats were off. The mad dash to the finishline had begun. Paddles were flying. One boat was turned andfaced the shore as the crowd screamed. Matt Streib led a packof four boats up and around the first bridge. Calvin Hassel, bid-ing his time was in second place less than a canoe length behind. Two kayaks fought each other to the downstream turn. Earl, afriend, was in the second group and paddling a downriver kayak. He was just ahead of a faster yellow Olympic training boat pad-dled by Steven Peterson. I yelled down from the bridge urgingEarl on. Three other packs were closing in on the two leadgroups.

I got into my car and took off for the next bridge. I put my cam-era on a tripod and waited. In the distance about a mile away, Icould make out a solitary figure weaving in and out of the trees.I knew at once that it was Calvin. His body was slightly hunchedas he followed the shore upstream. A tree would protrude into the

river its' bright green branches waiting to snare him and turn himover. From on top of the bridge I could see logs and pipes justunder the water that would be invisible to him. At most, Calvinwas a paddle length away from shore. Most of the time it wasonly a paddle blade. He didn’t miss a stroke as he paddledupstream. I watched as he went under the bridge and into the cur-rents that had made me decide not to race. He didn’t fight thecurrents. He saw a path, turned his canoe into the shore, and wasgone.

Next came Matt. A one-minute gap already separated him fromCalvin. He was into the trees and out but just a little further out

from shore than Calvin. As the other boats passed it was obvi-ous that the further out into the current you were the slower youwould be. Earl Metzler had been passed by the yellow boat butwas still paddling hard. I finished off a roll of film and rushed tomy next stop.

It would be awhile before they made it up this far. I sat on thebank and had a Gatorade and a banana. I watched as the currentflowed around a tree and over a set of rocks. There was only onecorrect way to run the section. First, you had to go upstreamaround the downed tree that forced you out into the main current. You then had to fight your way back into shore and go inside therocks before cutting out at a 45-degree angle across the powerfulcurrent to the other side of the river and the upstream eddy. Theywould have to do this in a 50-yard stretch of river.

Calvin was the first to pop around the tree. He cut back into shorewent around the rocks and then back across the river. It was doneto perfection. Now it was Matt’s turn. He popped around thetree but missed the rocks then cut across the river. Pat Sawyerwho had been running 4th in the C1 class cut through the treesand took off across the river. He fought hard across the currentand slide-slipped over to the other side. The time differencebetween the boats was starting to increase dramatically. One byone the other boats came through. Only Calvin had done it cor-rectly. Others had come close but nobody else made it to theinside of the rocks.

I picked up my gear and headed for the Railroad Bridge. Calvincame through and was almost on the shore. I kneeled down to get

a picture. He was just inches away from my lens. He had thatsame look of complete focus that he had on first downstream leg.In two hours, his expression had never changed. He saw me buthis eyes were on the river 100 yards ahead.

Matt was next and he yelled out, “how far ahead”.

“Two minutes “ I said.

I knew it was too much of a lead for him to make up. But yelledfor him to

“Go! Go!”

Rookie Racer Night leads to TrainingTips: A New “Regular Feature” inCanoe News. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Gareth Stevens

A few weeks ago, Rick Lorenzen from Minnesota sent me a draftset of training tips, asking for my comments. He had preparedthem for what he called Rookie Racer Mondays. Apart from sug-sting a good regular feature for Canoe News, he piques my inter-est. “Rookie Racer Nights? What are they?,” I asked. Here’s hisanswer.

Rookie Racer Monday Nights: acanoeing tradition on the MississippiRiver in downtown Minneapolis.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Rick Lorenzen

The late Karl Ketter, a professor at the University ofMinnesota, and Jeff Howe, an anesthesiologist at theUniversity Hospital, practiced canoe racing together onMondays in 1976. River Flats Park on the East Bank of the

South Bend PaddleFest 2002 - continued.

Now I had to make it down to the finish line. It was easy for meto get the pictures as they fought up stream against the current. Now I would be the one who would have to race to get themcrossing the finish line.

This was my first trip to South Bend. It is a typical college townwith Notre Dame taking up half of it. It also has a manmadewhite water course. I passed the Golden Dome and knew I waslost. Turning around I headed back to the river. However, everystreet seemed to angle away. Then I saw a familiar pancakehouse and took off going just ahead of the posted speed limit. Ipulled into the park and started to get ready to film the finish.Looking at my watch, I figured I had ten minutes before anyonecame through.

A spectator asked when the next boat would be in.

“Next boat?” I inquired.

“Yes, Matt and Calvin are in,” he replied.

Oh well I knew what the finish would be, Calvin, and then Matt.

I still had three rolls of unexposed film. I spent the next hour tak-ing pictures. Most of them were of the kids in the frog pond. They are the future of our sport. Just maybe one of them willpaddle at the National and World level. Maybe a few of the willpaddle in PaddleFest 2025. I hope that all of them will keep pad-dling.

I had missed the “Fun Race” which was a two-mile upstream-downstream race. It was structured for the paddlers who stillwanted to compete but might have trouble keeping up with thepace and effort of the 16 grueling miles of the marathon. I justwonder how Pat and Nancy will top it next year. Was that just arumor of a million-dollar purse for kayaks?

For up to date information on a great race check out the Webpage. www.paddlefest.org

Mississippi River was the most convenient place for them tomeet after work to paddle before the sun went down. Othercanoe racers and would-be canoe racers joined them over theyears. Now, twenty-six years later, men and women are stillcoming to Rookie Racer Monday Nights to practice canoe rac-ing. Rain or shine, cold or hot, drought or flood, nothing stopsthem from paddling except thunder and lightning. After all, real canoe races are never canceled due to any kind of weatherexcept lightning and that’s only because it would be bad pub-licity for the races if lightning killed a canoe racer.

These days, Ketter Canoeing sponsors Rookie Racer MondayNights by providing racing canoes and life jackets for free.Five to fifteen experienced canoe racers show up with theircanoes and bent shaft paddles every Monday from spring aheadto fall back when the days are long enough. They comebecause they love the sport of canoe racing and want to get agood workout on the water, to work on their paddling tech-nique, to practice riding other canoe wakes, and to share whatthey’ve learned with anyone who has an interest. After the pad-dling, you’re invited to dinner at the Lotus restaurant on OakStreet where you can hear stories of racers past and present anddiscuss the finer points of racing paddling techniques.

Here are some of the names of experienced canoe racers whohave volunteered their time at Rookie Racer Mondays in recentyears: Tom Noles, Yuyudahn Hoppe, Kenn Ketter, ToddEllison, Kjell Peterson, Al and Jeff Dubois, Pete and ChrisKolas, Keith Canny, Tom Gardner, Jered Clausen, ChuckRyan, Warren Thunstrom, Joe Conrad, Deighen Blakely,Io Harberts, Cal Stenso-Velo, Jason and Stephanie Larson,Sara Kueffer, Kevin Shriver, Scott Richardson, Dave Dahl,Heather Cichanowski, Doug Berg, Lee Jarpy, Duane andNorm Strike, and Rick and Tony Lorenzen.

As for the rookies, some people show up because they haven’tcanoed before and don’t want to look foolish in front of theirmore experienced recreational canoeist friends. Some peopleshow up to try bent shaft paddles or the sleeker racing canoes. Some people show up to learn more efficient paddling tech-niques for their recreational paddling even though it’s difficultto keep an open mind when your arms are programmed withyears of J and C strokes. Some athletes show up because theyhave an upcoming triathlon that has canoeing as part of the raceand they need to learn as much as they can in a few weeks.

Rookie Racer Mondays is one of the only places in the worldwhere you might see a 57 year old dairy farmer paddling acanoe with a 28-year-old woman doctor. Athletes, mothers, college students, doctors, and businessmen have all cometogether at the sandy edge of the Mississippi River. We sharethe mighty Mississippi River from the lock just below St.Anthony Falls to the Ford Parkway dam with river barges, pad-dlewheel showboats, racing sculls and their pace boats, a pere-grine falcon nesting under a high bridge, geese, ducks, andbeavers.

Dam Removal: Book and Videotape:Reviews. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Mike Fremont

Dam Removal – A Citizen’s Guide to Restoring Rivers

About 100 pages spiral notebook, color. 2001.Published by River Alliance of Wisconsin, 306 E.Wilson St., Suite 2W, Madison, WI 53703, [email protected] and by TroutUnlimited, 1500 Wilson Blvd., Suite 310,Arlington, VA 22209, [email protected].

This is the number one handbook on smalldam removal (25 feet high or less). Dams limitor block many functions of rivers that benefitthe public – such as fishing, wildlife habitat, natural beauty, water quality, waste assimilation, recreation, propertyvalue, public image, tourism. Dams wear out, threaten safety and costa lot to maintain and replace along with silt-filled reservoirs.

Sometimes dams are necessary.

This book covers all the factors involved in dam removal delibera-tions – costs, benefits, safety, environment, engineering, fish andmussels, sediment, government, fears, recreation, strategies, withworksheets, useful appendices, helpful questions and answers.

Where the uses of private property are at stake, there will likely bestrong feelings. We’re duly cautioned to use care and circumspectionin approaching and dealing with the several interests involved.

Note that this is a valuable checklist, not a set of examples or casehistories. Several of the latter appear in Dam Removal SuccessStories, December 1999, by American Rivers, Friends of the Earthand Trout Unlimited.

When you come down to it, the decision to remove or rebuild a damshould serve the public interest, at least in the dam region if not agreater area. That means looking at the comprehensive economicimpacts on the region and it calls for a Resource Economic study, atleast for the more expensive projects. How else to measure the poten-tial economic effects upon sport fishing, tourism, home building, riparian property values – a natural river compared to a dammed one?Economics is usually the decision-clincher and as a dam demolitiontool it should play a bigger part than it has in any book yet. By nomeans does that reduce the importance of other public interests suchas the environment.

Taking a Second Look – Communities and Dam Removal (Video)

A 22-minute tape of small dam removals in Maine, Wisconsin andCalifornia. Several interviews with local officials and citizens beforeand after dam removal, with videos of the rivers and surroundings.Available from (among many others) American Rivers: [email protected].

Expressions of serious concern about removal followed by pleasantsurprise with the results. In one case a high-tech employer in a smallbackwoods town seeking qualified help used the improved waterquality and beauty of the river corridor as a quality-of-life lure fornew employees.

The tape covers typical fears, concerns and questions and respondsfully. Real people, very down to earth, an excellent document.

And so, without further ado, we present CanoeNews’ first Canoe News Training Tips. . . . . . . . . . . . . . this issue courtesy of Rick Lorenzen

Monday Night Canoe RacingTechnique Practice Tips

Techniques to practice 1. Don’t use speed or power while working on technique, insteadfocus on training your muscles. This lets have time to de-programany bad habits and re-program with more efficient habits.

2. Rotate your shoulders to increase your paddle reach withoutleaning forward from the waist. This allows you to involve moretorso muscles and reduce strain on arm muscles.

3. Slow cadence with a quick recovery to get the paddle back intothe water fast. The paddle should be in the water longer than it’sin the air. This increases your ability to maintain stable in roughwaves.

4. Slice the paddle sideways on exiting and entering the water. This reduces drag.

5. Paddle parallel to the canoe’s centerline with the shaft nearlyvertical. This increases efficiency.

New racers1. Don’t race on the downstream leg, work on technique and saveyour strength for the upstream leg.

2. Focus on 1 or 2 things only and re-program your muscles to thisunfamiliar motion.

3. Watch and imitate the experienced racers and listen to how theydescribe the proper motion.

4. Ask questions if anything doesn’t make sense. We really wantto share what we’ve learned.

Experienced racers1. Work on improving your technique too (almost everyone needsmore rotation and quicker recovery)

2. Practice riding canoe wakes and passing canoes with a lessexperienced partner.

3. Circle back if your canoe passes everyone for a better workoutand to share your knowledge.

4. Remind your partner to work on technique without speed orpower on the downstream leg.

5. Give them time to think. Try letting them switch sides at theirown pace on the downstream leg.

Tricks that might be helpful1. If your canoe feels tippy: Put rocks in the bottom of the canoefor a lower center of gravity and keep your paddle in the waterlonger each stroke for more control. Slow the pace or frequencyof your strokes and speeding the recovery to get the paddle backinto the water quicker.

large state boundaries, we have 150 members, some of whom racenearly every weekend across the state. We sponsor three champi-onship races a year: unlimited, aluminum, and USCA; a canoe, bike, and run triathlon; publish a bi-monthly newsletter, and haveestablished an elaborate points system to encourage racing notonly in our races but any published race around the state. Awardsare presented at the end of the year to the top USCA, solo, andoverall male and female, youth and adult paddlers. But we are notonly about racing, we have a focus on conservation and of “giv-ing back” to the rivers we love.

The San Marcos River, in the heart of Texas, is a unique river nearand dear to many racers’ hearts. It is home to the notorious TexasWater Safari, a grueling 260 mile race to the Gulf of Mexico fromthe headwaters of the river, Aquarena Springs. Over 150 milliongallons of water gush daily from over 200 springs to form the San

Marcos River. Joined shortly by the Blanco River, then later theGuadalupe (whose name it assumes), and finally the San Antonio,it dumps its once pristine water into the San Antonio Bay in theGulf of Mexico. Hundreds of native species of plants and aquat-ic animals live in the river, including five endangered or threat-ened species in the springs area: the Texas blind salamander, thefountain darter, the San Marcos salamander, San Marcos gambu-sia and Texas wild-rice. On this river the TCRA centers its con-servation efforts.

Mud, Trash, and Snakes. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Ginger Turner

“Mind if I shoot that snake?”

“Uh, no, I guess not.”

“Son, go get the gun.”

Six boats of people were scattered around a large log jam, tryingto get to all the trash. A farmer had heard the commotion andcome to the edge of the tall bank to see what was going on. Wetold him we were doing our biannual clean up of the river whenhe noticed the snake. My rule of thumb is to leave snakes aloneunless they are going to harm children, but hey, this was his land.To my surprise, he let his son do the shooting. With this many

boats and people around I hope he’s got a good aim, I thought tomyself. I saw the snake explode into pieces and then heard theshot. (Hmm, bullets are faster than sound.) Breathing again, Iwas glad that part was over. After hearing voices over my shoul-der, I turned to see Kelly paddling an old refrigerator that hadfinally been freed from the jam. We joked about the new racingclass.

The Texas Canoe Racing Association (TCRA) is a group foundedto promote canoe and kayak racing in Texas. Pulling from our

The TCRA has adopted a 14 mile stretch of river from the City ofSan Marcos that we are responsible for cleaning twice a year. Onthe first Saturday in March and November you will find racersputting aside their competitiveness, unless of course, you countwho has the most trash, who has found the most golf balls, oreven who is the most helpful getting the trash over Ottine orGonzales Dam, mandatory portages made more difficult with 50lbs of trash. Often the weather does not cooperate. This year, forinstance, temperatures were in the 30’s in March and two yearsago it was flooding in November. But we do what we can. Our

spring cleanup coincides with a coordinated effort to clean theentire 90 miles of the San Marcos River. Canoe clubs fromaround the state pitch in to help, our efforts followed by a bar-beque dinner at a local campground. In November it’s just us, butwe follow the cleanup with hamburgers and camaraderie.

Besides our adopted stretch of the river, we often donate moneyto worthy conservation causes. We have given money to theTexas Rivers Protection Agency for their ongoing legal battlesand donations helped purchase Hildago Falls on the Brazos Riverto keep it open to paddlers. This year money given to the SanMarcos River Foundation helped fund their ingenious plan ofbuying water to leave in the river as protection for wetlands and

estuaries at the bay. This plan is unprecedented and has the waterboard baffled.

The TCRA is about racing, but we are also about conservation. As we trudge up the bank at the end of a clean-up with tires, motorcycle parts, “Wilson” the basketball with a face smearedwith mud, and innumerable bags of trash, we are satisfied that theriver looks better than when we found it. We feel good about giv-ing our time, talents and money to protect and beautify the riverswhere we race.
