From Canning’s extensive library of materials, all drawn from real life business stories … and from your own cases.

You tell the trainer about a difficult situation you meet at work. Then you rehearse it, with the trainer playing your boss, your supplier or your customer. This might be a meeting, discussion or phone call. Your trainer will respond as in real-life, not according to a script. Expect the unexpected.

This rehearsal and enactment with experienced business trainers is central to Canning’s success.

The training is ‘hard on your English, soft on you’ You will be with your trainers for the entire time of your course.

A high level of contact hours is what you need to improve your communication in English.

You will normally spend coffee breaks and lunches with your trainers, and often the evening social programme.

You will be listened to, corrected, drilled and given intelligent feedback. Your trainer will help you to improve your grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, and pronunciation using the lifelike enactments and examples from your own job.

Your trainers will be interested in you, your English and your business.

Every day 7½ hours individual attention to the English you use in your business life. There is no ‘one size fits all’ programme: your trainer discusses the programme with you. Anything from comprehension, grammar and vocabulary, to meetings, phone calls, presentations, negotiating, socialising … whatever you need. The group works continuously with the trainer from 0900 to 1730 (except a ‘free lunch hour’ usually on Thursdays). Realistic business meetings, both Group and One-to-One, telephone calls, presentations, discussions, negotiating. Grammar, phrasing, vocabulary, pronunciation, listening comprehension. Remember: you can combine this training with other courses.

Blend training (Intensive Blend 1) 40 contact hours, 3 days in a group, 2 days One-to-One

An exciting programme of Group training (Monday – Wednesday) and One-to-One training (Thursday and Friday). The group works continuously together from 0900 to 1730 in the Group stage, and you work 0900 to 1630 in the One-to-One stage. Combine the best of Group training with the best of One-to-One training. For organisations which have a group of people, with a similar level of English, who want to have a course tailored specifically to the needs of the organisation and the participants. The training is customised to the world your organisation operates in, while maintaining many of the benefits participants gain from attending a Canning open course. This can be a very cost effective way for an organisation to train large numbers of people. The per-head fee works out significantly lower than our open course fees. English for Human Resources Intensive training designed for HR professionals

Every day, 8½ hours attention to your business English with special reference to Human Resources. Communicate on HR issues with a range of people, professions and nationalities in English. My day in a Canning group 0830 Arrive, get coffee, check e-mail, read Financial Times, chat to Course Director and

participants in the lounge. 0900 Revision session of what we did yesterday - lots of tough questions, mostly related to our jobs. 0930 Listening exercise - subject familiar, but they speak so fast on the recording. The trainer got

us playing with the language used. All clear by the end. 1030 Manuel presents a graph of his division’s sales performance. Then we all have to practise

using similar language to talk about our own company’s performance this year. Difficult. 1100 Coffee break - chat with trainers, check e-mail (again!). 1115 Telephone calls - a really tough challenge. The trainer sounded just like our supplier from

the States in my call! 1145 Feedback on the calls included tactics for keeping control, pronunciation and the grammar of

past and future. I think I’m ready to deal with our supplier more effectively now. 1230 Language lab - a live exercise to make the new English more automatic. Painful, but really

helpful. 1300 Lunch in an Italian restaurant with group and trainer. 1415 Chair a meeting based on a Canning case study (a quality problem with a consultancy firm) -

interesting feedback, some on video. 1545 Break - a much needed coffee. 1600 Language lab again to repeat. 1630 Newspaper articles - Takashi picked a funny one on the British and their pets. Then a string

of live, instant responses, lots of laughter. 1730 Lecture on British politics at Canning, then out to a musical.

Tubes and trains take you to Heathrow, Gatwick and London City Airports in less than an hour, and the Eurostar rail terminal is 35 minutes away.

If you want to get away from the busy streets of London and escape to somewhere more tranquil, you can cross the river and get to Richmond Park, with its wild deer and open spaces, or the bird sanctuary at the Wetlands Centre in less

Your contact hours do not stop at the end of training. The course includes:

• Drinks or wine and cheese parties with your trainers on the first and last evenings of your course

• Lectures by trainers and external speakers on a wide range of subjects

• Guided tours of parts of London with a professional guide

• Visits with a guide to the British Museum, Westminster, Greenwich … (there is a small charge for these)

• Nights out at traditional London pubs

• Trainer-led evenings to jazz clubs, dog racing, classical concerts, restaurants …

• And we can help you find a gym, a swimming pool, cinema listings, football, theatre or musical tickets, nightclubs, markets, shops … whatever you are looking for in London

Home stay or hotel? We offer you the choice of staying in a local hotel, in a private home with one of Canning’s host families, or of finding your own accommodation. Canning private homes are in pleasant residential areas in or near Fulham (all within 40 minutes). As a guest, you can practise your English outside course time, and many participants strike up life-long friendships with their host families. Our administrators will make the best possible match for you from your booking information. We also recommend a number of hotels near Canning, including the opportunity to stay in the hotel at Chelsea Football Club. Most are four star standard, with a business centre, gym and restaurant. We can obtain reduced rates for you at these hotels. We monitor private homes and hotels, and only use those that meet our standards.

Internet access At Canning, we appreciate that work cannot stop just because you are out of the office on a course. To help you stay in touch with your company, suppliers and customers, we offer a wi-fi hot-spot in our lounge, and several internet enabled desktop PCs. We just ask you to limit your use of them within the training day to breaks and lunchtime. We also offer incoming and outgoing fax facilities should you require them.
