21

When vacuuming, in particularfine dust, e.g. dust, sand, plaster, flour, etc., electrostatic charges buildup naturally. Under certain conditionsthese charges will be released. Toavoid the unpleasant effects of thesedischarges, a metal inlay has beenincorporated into the underside ofthe handle. Please make sure thatyou keep your hand in constant con-tact with this metal strip during vacu-uming.

Parking, transport and storage

Park system for pauses during vacu-uming

(cannot be used with ElectrobrushesSEB 228 and SEB 236)

It is a good idea to retract the tele-scopic suction wand fully.

Slot the floorhead downwards intoone of the parking attachments on ei-ther side of the vacuum cleaner (theparking attachments cannot be usedwith Electrobrushes SEB 228 andSEB 236).

This makes the vacuum cleaner easierto carry or store.

Maintenance

Always switch off the vacuumcleaner for maintenance work andremove the plug from the outlet.

The Miele filtration system consists ofthree components:

– Original Miele FilterBag

– Motor protection filter

– Original Miele exhaust filter

These will need to be replaced fromtime to time to ensure that your vacuumcleaner performs efficiently.

Page 23: Canister Vacuum Cleaner Operating Instructions...Do not allow the vacuum cleaner or Electrobrush, electric wand or electric hose to get wet. Clean only with a dry or slightly damp

23

We recommend only using genuineFilterBags, filters, and accessorieswith the “Original Miele” logo onthem. This will ensure that the suc-tion power of the vacuum cleaner ismaintained, giving the best possiblecleaning results.FilterBags with the “Original Miele”logo on them are not made from pa-per or paper-based materials and nordo they have a cardboard collar. Thisis why our FilterBags are particularlylong-lasting and reliable. Please note that appliance faults anddamage originating from the use ofaccessories which do not carry the“Original Miele” logo will not be cov-ered by the appliance guarantee.

Purchasing new FilterBags and filters

Original Miele FilterBags and filters areavailable from the Miele Webstore andyour Miele dealer.

Ordering the correct FilterBags andfilters

Only use original Miele GN FilterBagswith a blue collar and original Miele fil-ters. These are identified by the “ORIGI-NAL Miele” logo on the packaging.

Every packet of original Miele FilterBagscontains four bags, one AirClean ex-haust filter, and one motor protection fil-

ter. Original Miele multipacks contain 16FilterBags, four AirClean exhaust filters, and four motor protection filters.

Original Miele exhaust filters can alsobe purchased separately from yourMiele dealer or Miele Technical Service. Please quote the model number of yourvacuum cleaner when ordering to makesure you get the correct filter. You canalso order all accessories via the Mieleweb store.

When to change the FilterBag

Change the FilterBag when the colormarker in the FilterBag change indicatorturns red.

FilterBags are disposable and in-tended to be used only once. Dis-pose of the entire FilterBag. Do notattempt to re-use. Blocked pores re-duce the efficiency of the vacuumcleaner.

Checking the FilterBag change indi-cator

Attach the floor brush to the vacuumcleaner (depending on the model).

Page 24: Canister Vacuum Cleaner Operating Instructions...Do not allow the vacuum cleaner or Electrobrush, electric wand or electric hose to get wet. Clean only with a dry or slightly damp

24

Switch the vacuum cleaner on andselect the highest power setting.

Lift the floor brush off the floor a little.

How the FilterBag change indicatorworks

The FilterBag change indicator is set fornormal household dust. This generallycontains a mixture of dust, hair, threads, carpet lint, grit, etc.

However, if the cleaner has been usedto vacuum up fine dust, such as plaster, brick dust, cement or flour, the pores ofthe FilterBag will become blocked veryquickly. This affects the air permeability of thebag, and the marker will indicate thatthe bag is “full” even when it is not. Ifthis happens you must still change theFilterBag because suction power will begreatly reduced by blocked pores in theFilterBag.

If, on the other hand, a large amount ofhair and carpet lint which typically con-tains a lot of air is vacuumed up, the in-dicator may fail to react even thoughthe bag is full. You should still change it.Both these extremes can occur.

Replacing the FilterBag

Press the release buttons at the sideof the hose connector, and removethe hose from the suction opening.

Lift the release button for the dustcompartment lid and raise the lid untilit engages.

The FilterBag has a closing flap whichcloses automatically when the dustcompartment lid is raised to preventany dust escaping.

Page 25: Canister Vacuum Cleaner Operating Instructions...Do not allow the vacuum cleaner or Electrobrush, electric wand or electric hose to get wet. Clean only with a dry or slightly damp

25

Pull the FilterBag out by the grip onthe collar.

Insert the new FilterBag into the blueholder as far as it will go. Leave itfolded up when you take it out of thebox.

It should be unfolded as far as possi-ble in the dust compartment.

Close the dust compartment lid se-curely, making sure it clicks into posi-tion. Take care not to trap the Fil-terBag when doing so.

An empty operation lock preventsthe FilterBag from closing without aFilterBag in place. Do not force it!

Insert the hose connector into thesuction socket on the vacuumcleaner until it clicks into position. Todo this, line up the guides on the twopieces.

When to change the motor protectionfilter

Replace this filter every time you start anew packet of filter bags.Every packet of original Miele filter bagscontains a motor protection filter. Multi-packs contain four motor protection fil-ters.

Changing the motor protection filter

Open the dust compartment lid.

Pull the FilterBag out by the grip onthe collar.

Page 26: Canister Vacuum Cleaner Operating Instructions...Do not allow the vacuum cleaner or Electrobrush, electric wand or electric hose to get wet. Clean only with a dry or slightly damp

26

Open the blue filter frame fully andremove the old filter. Hold by theclean, unsoiled section to remove it.

Replace with a new motor protectionfilter.

Close the filter frame.

Insert the FilterBag into the blueholder as far as it will go.

Close the dust compartment lid se-curely, making sure it clicks into posi-tion. Take care not to trap the Fil-terBag when doing so.

When to replace the exhaust filter

Depending on the model, your vacuumcleaner will come with one of the fol-lowing exhaust filters as standard:

a AirCleanReplace this filter every time you start anew packet of Miele FilterBags. An Air-Clean exhaust filter is supplied with ev-ery packet of Miele FilterBags.

b Active AirClean 50 (black)c HEPA AirClean 50 (white)Replace if the display for the exhaust fil-ter change indicator is completely filledwith red. This occurs after approx. 50hours of operation which is equivalentto about a year of average use. Thevacuum cleaner can still be used. However, the suction power will be re-duced as will the effectiveness of the fil-ter if it is not replaced in good time.

How to replace the AirClean filter

Do not use more than one exhaust fil-ter at a time.

Open the dust compartment lid.

Page 27: Canister Vacuum Cleaner Operating Instructions...Do not allow the vacuum cleaner or Electrobrush, electric wand or electric hose to get wet. Clean only with a dry or slightly damp

27

Frequently Asked QuestionsWith the help of the following guide minor faults in the performance of the ma-chine, some of which may result from incorrect operation, can be remedied with-out contacting the Service Department.

This guide may help you to find the reason for the fault, and how to correct it.

Problem Possible cause and solution

The vacuum cleanerswitches off automati-cally. On certain models, theoverheating warninglight also comes on .

A temperature limiter turns the vacuum cleaner off au-tomatically if it gets too hot. This can occur if, for in-stance, large articles block the wand or when the Fil-terBag is full or contains particles of fine dust. A heav-ily soiled exhaust or dust compartment filter can alsobe the cause of overheating. Turn the vacuum cleaner off immediately using the

On/Off foot switch , and unplug it.

After removing the cause, wait for approximately 20 -30 minutes to allow the vacuum cleaner to cool down.It can then be turned on again.
