Trailer Construction 1I am using Apple iMovie

to create my trailer. I decided to focus first on the wolf POV shots. I have darkened these shots to more closely resemble a wolf’s view because they are colour-blind. Darkness is also frightening and so darker camera shots will help to make my trailer more frightening overall.

I want the forest clips to be slowed down to make them feel more ominous and that danger is close. To do this I had to export the clips into a separate iMovie file and apply the effect.

I extracted the audio for these forest clips onto separate ones and then deleted these to leave the woodland shots silent.

Trailer Construction 4

I have added multiple copies of a sound clip downloaded from www.freesound.org. The sound is rustling leaves and when added to the forest clips they give the impression of foliage under the feet of the wolf/dog.

I have begun to add the clips for the montage at the end of the trailer. These clips will be very short and will help to increase the overall pace of the trailer. A fast pace will make the movie look interesting and also frightening to audiences.

Trailer Construction 6 In order to scare my audience I need to create

tension and suspense in my trailer. After watching the theatrical trailer for ‘Alien’ I noticed that they used sounds that were paced to resemble heartbeats. These sounds increase the heart rate of the audience as their own tries to match the speed of the heartbeats on screen. This means that by the time the action really begins towards the end of the trailer the audience are already in a state of nervousness and this is one feature that made the trailer so terrifying and effective. I will attempt to mirror this technique by using heartbeats under the other audio layers of my trailer.

Here I am searching www.freesound.org for a suitable file.

I have begun adding the heartbeat sound and will now cut and position it to maximise its effectiveness.

The climax of my trailer is beginning to take shape, with many of the short scenes added which will create the montage. I have also begun to space out separate heartbeats to coincide with the transitions between scenes.

Trailer Construction 10

I am looking on www.freesound.org for some cinematic build-up music to increase the levels of suspense within my trailer.

Trailer Construction 11I am experimenting with

some different video effects that could make my trailer look more terrifying for the viewer. This particular effect gives the impression that we are looking through the eyes of an alien creature. The lowered brightness that I had already applied looked more like a dogs POV so I will stick with that.

Trailer Construction 12I have finished building my

montage of short scenes for the climax of my trailer, linking these short scenes with fast heartbeats to really put the audience ‘on edge’. I have also begun to add the Canine title into the trailer, as well as a final ‘shock’ scene which will leave the terror of a werewolf imprinted on the minds of the audience members.

I am looking for sound clips of a woman screaming on www.freesound.org. This scream will be placed at the very end of the short scene montage and will be used to scare the audience.

I have edited the volume levels at each stage of each individual sound/video clip to maximise their effectiveness at scaring the audience. By making the volume levels drop to 0 by the end of a clip I can make it appear as if the sound is fading out (suspenseful) rather than just suddenly stopping. By maximising the volume levels on certain clips they are emphasised and the loudness can shock the viewers.

My trailer is very nearly complete. I have added the ‘blood is thicker’ as a reference to the bond between the brother and sister and emphasising its relevance to the plot. I have then added the bass booms to increase the tension created by these scenes.
