Candlelighrs of El Paso because kids can’t fight cancer alone” Newsleer • Avisos Ocber 2012 • Octubre 2012 Candlelighter Profile: Dylan Barba Dylan Barba was born on January 24, 2003 in El Paso, Texas. When he was born he was given a clean bill of health. However, in 2008. when he was only 2 years old, one night in October, his parents, Albert & Gema Barba, noticed that when Dylan went to the bathroom , his urine had a dierent color than normal; This time it looked reddish. Back then Dylan along with his sister Enya Barba, loved to eat “Hot-Cheetos”. Their parents blamed this unusual color on these spicy chips. Still, the following morning Dylan was taken to his primary doctor, Dr. Days, in Horizon City, where Dylan currently resides with his family. Initially Dr. Days, diagnosed Dylan with an urine infection, giving him some antibiotic as well as sonogram orders which were taken at Providence Hospital. It was December 9 , 2008, when Dylan’s worried parents took him to Providence Hospital. They had no idea what was coming and how it would change their lives. Even though they didn’t know anything about medicine, when they saw the sonogram screen, they knew there was something wrong. Sure enough, Dylan was diagnosed with Rhapdoid tumor phase IV. This tumor was already on his left kidney, inside his heart artery and his lungs were full of tiny tumors. A nightmare was starting. Dylan had no idea what was going on, his parents could not believe what they were told at that moment. Dr. Carcamo has been taking care of Dylan since the beginning, along with his angel-nurses from Providence Hospital and most recently, from those at El Paso Children Hospital. When Dr. Carcamo talked to Dylan’s parents, he told them that the prognosis was not good; meaning the possibilities were “weeks” even “a few months” to live. According to Dylan’s parents, to this day, those words feel like knives straight to the heart. In March, 2009, Dylan had surgery to remove his left kidney. Dylan says that his scar looks just like a happy face across his tummy. In May of the same year, Dylan and his family, were sent to San Antonio for radiation therapy for 2 months. Dr. Carcamo recently ordered some blood and bone marrow tests, because he noticed some abnormality on Dylan’s chromosomes. Thanks be to God, Dylan is now attending first grade at Frank Macias Elementary School. He is receiving the best help from his teachers and principal and his grades are excellent. It’s been 4 years since Dylan was diagnosed. Today with so much love from his family and a promise he received from God, two weeks after he got diagnosed, he lives a normal live. This is the message Dylan got: “Papá Dios me dijo, que no me preocupe, que todo va estar bien”. Which means God said “not to worry, that everything would be fine.” Happy Halloween
