POSITION DESCRIPTIONS FOR ADHA OFFICERS

President-Elect – The president-elect year is spent observing and assisting the president, establishing the administrative calendar for the presidential year and leading the development of the strategic plan which will drive association activity during the presidential year. The president-elect serves as vice chair of the Executive Committee, is a member of the Finance Committee, the ADHA Board of Trustees, the ADHA Institute for Oral Health Board of Directors and is an ex-officio member of the House of Delegates. The president-elect appoints council and committee personnel and local coordinators for the annual session which will occur at the conclusion of the presidential year. The president-elect spends approximately six weeks of the year traveling for ADHA plus an additional 20 hours per week on ADHA business.

Vice-President – The vice-president chairs the Committee on ADHA Procedures. The vice –president plays an important role in the development of the strategic plan which will drive association activity in future years. The vice-president serves on the Executive Committee, the ADHA Board of Trustees, the ADHA Institute for Oral Health Board of Directors and is an ex-officio member of the Finance Committee and the House of Delegates. The vice-president spends three weeks a year traveling on ADHA’s behalf and an additional ten hours per week on ADHA business.

Speaker of the House – The speaker of the house must have a working knowledge of parliamentary procedure. A registered parliamentarian assists the speaker at all meetings of the House of Delegates so it is not necessary to hold the RP credential. Each year in April, the speaker is involved with the electronic meeting of the Council on Policy & Bylaws and offers input on how house business will be handled. The speaker also appoints five tellers to handle balloting and this is usually done prior to the annual session. On-site at the annual session, the speaker orients reference committee personnel, the sergeant-at-arms, the pages and the tellers. The speaker gives final approval of all reference committee reports prior to printing. The speaker presides over all three meetings of the House of Delegates and is funded to attend the annual session for four days.

Finance Committee Member – An elected finance committee member must have a thorough understanding of the ADHA strategic plan and the budget which is driven by the plan. A finance committee member must understand the roles played by the committee, the board, and the House of Delegates in providing a system of checks and balances. Finance Committee members have conference calls and email assignments throughout the year. Finance Committee members devote 20 hours a week to ADHA during the month of January and 2-4 hours per week during the remainder of the year.

Ethics Committee Members – The individuals elected to this office are expected to uphold the high ethical standards set forth in the ADHA Code of Ethics. They are elected because of their standing in the dental hygiene community and it is not expected that they devote an inordinate amount of time to this office.

PLATFORM STATEMENTDENISE BOWERS, RDH, PHDCandidate for ADHA President-Elect

Serving as your ADHA Vice President this past year has been phenomenal. The knowledge and experience I gained solidified my commitment to climb the next step of the ADHA leadership ladder.

Throughout this year, I welcomed every opportunity to enhance my leadership skills and prepare for the position of ADHA President-Elect. I assisted with and embraced the unveiling of our environmental scan, a document which served as the basis for our 2012-2015 Strategic Plan. I facilitated the strategic planning discussion during our Council Workshops in October. I served as a table facilitator and mentor at ADHA’s Leadership Conference in February. I attended the CEO Symposium for association leaders in April, and I spearheaded discussions with constituent officers on the need for establishing collaborative relationships with dental hygiene stakeholders.

Collaboration continues to be a major focus of ADHA. It enables us to impact change and to champion successful networking relationships critical to our future success as an Association as well as a profession. ADHA’s workforce policy (Access to Care 7S-09/27-74) states that ADHA “is committed to collaborative partnerships and coalitions that improve access to oral health services.” We must be willing to collaborate with all stakeholders (including foundations, associations, and community interest groups) seeking to implement a work-force model which is truly marketed to address the access to care issue and utilizes the full potential of dental hygienists and existing oral health care providers.

The environmental scan speaks to collaboration in terms of collaborative leadership. Collaborative leadership is a way to “engage people and groups to work toward common goals that rise above their traditional roles, disciplines, past experience and beliefs.” Collaborative leaders inspire, mentor, coach, and empower others to achieve their full potential. Collaborative leaders create an environment of trust, passion, innovation, and accountability.

As a Dental Hygiene Program Director, I practice collaborative leadership with my students, faculty, staff, administrators, association leaders, legislators, and community advocates as I build relationships, inspire teamwork, and cultivate trust. I welcome the opportunity to utilize this leadership style in my position as ADHA President-Elect as I collaborate with ADHA leaders and our stakeholders to advance and secure our Association during the next fiscal year and beyond.

Henry Ford wrote: “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” With a collaborative mindset, ADHA will successfully guide the dental hygiene profession into the future.

PLATFORM STATEMENTNORINE RYAN DOWD, RDH, BHScCandidate for Vice President

Collaborative Leadership is the future of ADHA. This is clearly outlined in the environmental scan: Dental Hygiene at the Crossroads of Change. During my four years on the Board of Trustees, I have valued collaboration in the decision making process. A leader with this trait is someone who has the Confidence to stand alone, the Courage to make tough decisions and the Compassion to listen to the needs of others. I am that leader.

Confidence allows a leader to share ideas, motivate others, and create excitement. Changes in health care will bring challenging opportunities for our profession. ADHA needs the positive attitude and determination of a confident leader who engages others to work toward common goals. I have confidence in my ability to work collaboratively

with the officers, trustees, councils, members and our strategic partners. I am confident I can face challenges and take advantage of new opportunities.

Courageous leaders base decisions on the Association’s values, purpose, and potential. Acts of courage include, honest input, being open to new ideas, sharing opposing viewpoints, and challenging the status quo. When faced with tough choices, I base my decisions on what is best for the Association. I am not afraid to embrace new ideas and question outdated processes. In my role as District IV Trustee, I was the first to implement the use of webinars as an innovative and cost effective way to conduct our district workshop. Using this technology we increased participation, enhanced communication, and saved valuable resources. Based on our success other districts are now holding their workshops by webinar

Compassion is the hallmark of leaders who have an open mind, a willingness to engage people, and listen to others, while continuing to learn. In response to the outcome of the 2011 Mega Issues Forum, the board adopted the concept and use of the District Listserv. I effectively promoted this effort in my district, knowing that members want to stay informed and give input on the issues that affect the profession.

We are at the crossroads of change. The opportunities and challenges facing us demand a collaborative effort. Your future leaders must have the ability to guide individual accomplishments toward the association’s goals. Together we will direct the transformation of our profession.

I am prepared to be your ADHA Vice President and will serve with Confidence, Courage and Compassion.

PLATFORM STATEMENTKELLI SWANSON JAECKS, RDH, BSDH, MACandidate for Vice President

I am running for the office of Vice President to engage in solutions to challenges we face today. I am committed to:

- Advancing job opportunities for dental hygienists

- Creating solutions to practice barriers and access issues

- Communicating effectively with members and stakeholders

My focus is on you, the individual hygiene professional, and on creating an environment in which you can grow and thrive.

I enthusiastically and wholeheartedly worked with the BOT to create and adopt a new vision statement and strategic plan last fall. These, along with the Environmental Scan, will guide us through the next 3 years as we work to keep abreast of the current and projected changes in the marketplace, profession and environment. We must be strategic and nimble with change.

This environment must include multiple strategies to increase job opportunities for dental hygienists. I believe we must continue to: Support states in their efforts to influence change in statutes and rules that open new exciting avenues for DH employment. Be a strong presence at the table of national stakeholder groups who seek to provide healthcare more affordably and effectively. Provide support to our members in business and management skills that are needed to effectively transition to new practice models. Educate members on ways to future-proof their careers and advance in the direction they choose.

Coming from Oregon and District XII, I have experience implementing positive change such as direct access to the DH, prescriptive writing privileges and independent practice. I am committed to helping all states advance their practice acts and remove barriers so hygienists can use their education and licensure to full effect!

My professional background is very diversified. I have worked in private practice, higher education, the corporate dental world, and as a small business owner, speaking, writing and consulting around the country. This diversification gives me a broad perspective and awareness of where our profession is and what it faces.

I have strong communication skills that are important as we shift toward collaborative leadership and strengthening strategic alliances. My leadership style is one of teamwork and inclusion.

I want to be part of your Leadership team finding answers and creating solutions for you. I have the will and the drive to work diligently, creatively and passionately for you and this association. I ask for your vote and your support for ADHA Vice President.

PLATFORM STATEMENTCJ INMAN, RDH, BS, PRPCandidate for Speaker of the House

I’m a candidate for re-election as ADHA Speaker of the House of Delegates.

I think of a platform statement to be about issues and direction for ADHA. For me it is appropriate as speaker to have opinions about procedure but to maintain a neutral position on issues so as to conduct the business of ADHA in a manner that enables the will of the majority to be accomplished while protecting the rights of the minority.

Since I’ve retired from dental hygiene practice I can be objective about the issues. The decisions about the future of the dental hygiene profession are the delegates’ responsibilities. As Speaker of the House of Delegates, I will strive to create an atmosphere that promotes open debate and I will encourage collaborative discussion. I’ve been actively working with parliamentary procedure since 1977 and have

many years of experience. I am comfortable with parliamentary procedure and tracking motions and amendments. My job will be to clearly state the motions in order that the delegates know what they are voting on.

It’s a job I enjoy and I ask for your vote.

“your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change.” Jim Rohn

This quote resonates with me on so many levels. One of the constants in our lives is change, yet so many times we only focus on undesired change that occurs around us rather than the choices we can make to create desired change in our lives.

One common trait that hygienists share is the ability to look for choices that will improve the quality of life for our patients and our profession. AdhA continually works to make choices that improve the quality of life for dental hygienists and the public we serve.

Beginning in the first years of my dental hygiene career, I worked through our professional organization on behalf of dental hygiene. I contributed at various levels where I could make a difference in the dental hygiene environment. As an elected member of the Finance Committee, I look forward to continuing my service to my association as we move our strategic plan forward on the national level, helping AdhA make sound financial recommendations and using our resources wisely. One important area of focus is continued membership renewal and growth and to continue the exciting work begun to develop, support and empower dental hygienists.

My past two years of experience on the AdhA Finance Committee have broadened my appreciation for all the work done by our AdhA members and staff. I have experience as treasurer at the constituent level and have served on VdhA’s Budget and Finance Committee for the past nine years. I continue to serve as one of the directors for the VdhA Foundation which manages a portfolio valued over $500,000, reviews and approves educational, research and charitable grant proposals. I continue to develop business skills in my multi-specialty group dental practice as a member of our Quality Assurance Review Group, still provide clinical services, serve as the dental hygiene team leader and manage scheduling and assessing team members. I also facilitate dental hygiene team meetings and arrange for OShA and continuing education activities in house. In these roles I have developed organizational skills in financial management, team building, meeting facilitation, staff assessment and scheduling.

I appreciate all the work done by our Finance Committee members and ask for your support and your vote to continue my service to AdhA.

PLATFORM STATEMENTJANE A. CRISER, RDH, BSCandidate for Finance Committee, Region C

My name is Jane Criser and I am seeking the nomination for Finance Committee Member. I have been an active member of ADHA, KDHA, and WDHA since 1979. I have been interested in the financial dealings of my association since I was vice-president of my SADHA organization in 1977. Dealing with budgets and fiscal responsibility has always been a passion of mine. I have served as the Component Treasurer of Wichita DHA and the Constituent Treasurer of Kansas DHA. I have served as the KDHA Financial Review and Audit Chair five different times. I was instrumental in streamlining the financial records so they could be easily reportable and accessible for KDHA. Each time I was Chair of Financial Review & Audit, I mentored the current Treasurer. As Treasurer, I felt like I was knowledgeable about all committees, officers, and their budgets. Early in my membership in KDHA, I was mentored by Jamie Menees, a former ADHA

Treasurer. I always looked up to her and held her knowledge about leadership and budget in high esteem. My strengths are working with people and with numbers and that is why I am seeking this nomination. I have served WDHA, KDHA, and the state of Kansas as an enthusiastic dental hygienist and am anxious to serve/volunteer at a national level for ADHA.

Thank you for considering me for this nomination.

PLATFORM STATEMENTYOLANDA JOSEY-BAKER, RDH, MPHCandidate for Ethics Committee, Region A

All of us are faced with tough decisions at some time. Given our changing world, some of the values that guide us to make our decisions are compounded by technology, new laws and regulations and our own lack of keeping up with the latest practice management processes. Our profession and its members have traditionally upheld high professional standards and behaviors which has held us to be seen by the public as being very ethical. The American Dental Hygienists’ Association Code of Ethics identifies seven core values that guide our practice of dental hygiene and our treatment of patients. We must continually strive to retain this trust society has entrusted to us and expects of us.

The core values of our profession help us to frame the code of ethics by which we have pledged to abide. Our experiences and judgments make

the difference in treating our patients. When our judgment produces a successful outcome, one’s experience grows. The more experiences we have with positive outcomes, the better judgment we can demonstrate. Over time these two positive outcomes become undistinguishable.

I have the professionalism, integrity and commitment to promoting the high standards of our profession. I know that in these times, it is not enough to do the right thing. Indeed, those who rely on us have the right to expect the highest degree of professionalism, trustworthiness, integrity and competence.

In seeking your vote to become a member of the Ethics Committee, I pledge to help uphold, promote and assure that we uphold the standards prescribed by the ADHA code of ethics.

I have been a member of ADHA for 12 years. I am very excited about this position and serving my fellow hygienists and ADHA. I am a very fair person, as I always tell my children “there are always 2 sides to a story.” That will be my job in this position, is to listen to both sides of any situation, to reach an unbiased and fair outcome. However I do hope that this is a position that will not be utilized at all. I will serve ADHA and my fellow members to the best of my ability and uphold ADHA Bylaws and Code of Ethics.
