Dear Potential Colleague, We’re the only UK charity looking after the nation’s lungs. Can you help us make sure that one day everyone breathes clean air with healthy lungs? Having lung disease brings questions and anxiety about the future. We don't want anyone to face that alone. Our helpline, support groups, web community and easy-to-understand information offer vital hope and support. We know that people with respiratory illness don’t always get access to the services they need and their outcomes vary across the country. This exciting role as Lead Service Development Manager
/ London & South East will help change this. You will support service improvement and service development work across the region and ensure the voice of the users and carers can influence these services. You will also be responsible for leading the team of four SDMs across England. We are looking for someone with experience of working with the NHS, health care professionals and service users. You will have excellent influencing and motivating skills combined with a focus on problem solving and experience of leading a team to deliver excellent results. We value our staff. Lung disease affects more than 12 million people across the UK.
We are leading the fight against lung disease to make sure no one has to face it alone. We promote greater understanding of lung disease and campaign for change in the nation’s lung health.
Additionally, we fund vital research so that new treatments and cures can help to save lives.
Context of Work
One person in five in the UK is affected by lung disease. As the only UK charity for people affected by all lung and respiratory disease – from mild asthma through to lung cancer – the British Lung Foundation (BLF) is here for every one of them. We are leading the fight against lung disease by providing support, funding vital research, and campaigning for better prevention, treatment and
care.

Working for us
The BLF has approximately 90 staff, of which around 50 staff are based in the BLF Head Office
based in Goswell Road, London.
Teams in this office include fundraising, communications & marketing and corporate services. Some
of our projects and services staff are also based here.
In Liverpool we have BLF Direct which provides our telephone and email support services and looks after our Breathe Easy patient support network.15 staff are based in this office.
We also have small offices in Glasgow (covering Scotland and Northern Ireland) and Cardiff where small teams (four people in each office) provide local influencing in Scotland, Northern Ireland and
Wales.
Other staff are home based so that they can deliver local projects or influence local NHS services.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Lead Service Development Manager to support service improvement in respiratory care across the London and South East region.
We are looking for someone who has experience of service development and user involvement as you will be responsible for innovating and supporting the development of new and existing services, opportunities and initiatives to improve patient centred care.
You will also be responsible for line managing four Service Development Managers so previous experience of leading and motivating a team to deliver excellent results is essential.

Position title: Lead Service Development Manager/London and South East England Reports to: Chief Operating Officer Location: London, EC1V No. of hours: Full-time, 36 hours per week Period of employment: Permanent
Salary guideline: £43,000 - £45,000 per annum
Overall purpose of the job
This role combines working as a service development manager for London and the South East region with leading the team of SDMs across England. The post-holder will:
Provide strategic leadership to the SDM team in England and will be responsible for their day to day management, including setting objectives, holding 121s, and performance appraisal
Develop and maintain strong and effective working relationships with key stakeholders across health and social care to influence and support service improvements in respiratory care
Through the promotion of self-care support patients to live with their condition, have the best possible outcomes and have a voice to influence their own health care.
Proactively work with statutory, voluntary and independent providers of care to influence the commissioning of respiratory services to meet national and local guidelines that delivers patient centred care.
Key Responsibilities
Lead role
Line management of SDM including; 121s, monitoring performance, measuring impact, day to day support, performance appraisals
Organise and plan monthly team meetings, including training and support
Work with Head of Service Development & Delivery (SDD) to set strategic direction & priorities for SDM team
Support the SDM team in accessing the data and tools necessary to carry out their role
Develop tools to monitor the progress and impact of SDM actvity
Work with individuals in the SDD team, Patient Services team, and wider organisation including (policy, digital & marketing, communications team) to ensure two way communication and effective input from a regional perspective in to national work
Increase the profile of the SDM team in the BLF and ensure that they have opportunities to input into national areas of work and policy
London and south east Influencing and supporting service improvement
Develop effective relationships with respiratory leaders, local and regional networks, service providers and other key stakeholders to promote the BLF and influence improvements in care
Using data and patient experiences influence commissioners to deliver respiratory services that meet national and local guidelines.
Work with the commissioners and key stakeholders to prioritise respiratory care is a priority within local and regional strategic plans
Promote the value of self-care, including BLF resources, to ensure people have the skills, confidence and knowledge to manage their condition

Patient and user representative support
Develop and support a network of patient representatives from across the region ensuring the patient and carers voice is represented
Support the delivery of the integrated Breathe Easy group project by working with local commissioners to secure agreement and identify sites for the project
Health care professional engagement
Develop and maintain effective working relationships with key health care professionals to raise awareness of and promote the BLF
Support and/or establish local networks for health care professionals to promote good practice in respiratory care
Manage and support a regional forum (mix of stakeholders from across the respiratory field) to support SDM in their role and promote the BLF
BLF Products & services
Establish business opportunities, and develop contacts with key stakeholders ensuring appropriate products from our range are promoted to Clinical Commissioning Groups, Local Authorities and other potential purchasers
Promote the BLF product range at conferences and other events as these opportunities arise. Identify opportunities for collaborative funded project work to test existing BLF products or pilot new areas of work (for example via AHSNs, Health Foundation, CCGs)
General
Work with BLF colleagues on UK wide initiatives
Attend occasional meetings and training sessions across the UK as required
Support local fund raising activity in partnership with Fundraising Directorate
Carry out other tasks as required by your line manager which are consistent with the scope of this post
Education & Training
Educated to at least degree level or equivalent Evidence of and a continued commitment to Continuous Professional Development
Skills & Experience
Essential
Strong team leadership and motivational skills with experience of managing home based
staff
Ability to build, develop and maintain complex relationships with key stakeholders, service
providers, including people affected by lung disease, healthcare professionals, and other
external support organisations to bring about positive patient outcomes
Demonstrable experience in measuring impact and staff performance
Detailed knowledge of NHS structures and processes
Experience of working to influence service design and delivery, preferably in a health care
setting
Written communication skills to produce concise reports, project briefs (internal and
external) and proposals
