SAMIA AL-AMOUDICEOSheikh Mohammed H. Al Amoudi Center of Excellence in Breast CancerSaudi ArabiaMember, UICC Board of Directors 2012-2014

BIOGRAPHYDr. Samia Al-Amoudi is founder and CEO of the Sheikh Mohammed H. Al-Amoudi centre of Excellency in Breast Cancer. She is Associate Professor at the King Abdulaziz University and Consultant Obstetrician Gynecologist. She is Chairwoman of the Women’s Health Empowerment at King Abdulaziz University.

WHAT SKILLS AND INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE CAN YOU BRING TO THE UICC BOARD OF DIRECTORS? I believe I could continue supporting UICC efforts towards the global health commitment through my personal and professional experiences. Being a breast cancer survivor, a physician and an advocate from a region where breast cancer is a burden gives me an understanding of the culture and the psychosocial barriers people encounter when fighting cancer in a region where challenges are numerous. I believe in UICC approach: Together we are stronger. I have worked with the US-Middle East Partnership Program and with the Breast Health Global Initiative. I am an activist who advocates throughout the Middle East for a better tomorrow for my daughter and every daughter in the world.

WHICH OF UICC’S PRIORITY AREAS CAN YOU BE INVOLVED IN TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE? I think I could make a difference working in UICC advocacy for early detection and screening for breast cancer and to empower women in the region in their health rights particularly breast cancer patients’ rights. Through my work in the media as a writer in the local newspaper and my TV program I could help in advocating for UICC objectives in uniting global efforts and improving women’s health and quality of life.

I will also continue my commitment with World Cancer Day to increase awareness and mark the day.

WHAT SKILLS AND INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE CAN YOU BRING TO THE UICC BOARD OF DIRECTORS?As a UICC Board member since 2012, I have been honored to link UICC with successful external international efforts in global cancer control. Resource adaptation is critical for improving cancer early detection, diagnosis and treatment in LMICs. My experience through the Breast Health Global Initiative (BHGI) in developing resource-stratified guidelines has provided a framework for collaboration in designing and studying realistic cancer care delivery systems for LMICs.My roles as Chair of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) International Program Committee and member of the International Cancer Control Partnership (ICCP) provide opportunities for developing synergies within the international community of organisations engaged in cancer control planning. In July 2014, I served as a civil society representative for the high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). This is an opportune time to address global cancer control with UICC at the helm.

WHICH OF UICC’S PRIORITY AREAS CAN YOU BE INVOLVED IN TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE? I respectfully request your support to continue on the UICC Board of Directors and serve as UICC Membership Committee Chair. Our Membership team has worked diligently in member recruitment and engagement. We organised the 2013 Membership Survey to gain insights about member expectations. We developed outreach materials to attract universities and research institutions into the UICC family. Our outreach campaign links UICC members to core activities like the UICC Congress and World Cancer Day and to stimulate new collaborations among UICC members and partners. In July 2014, UICC membership peaked at 828 members, representing a 7.8% growth over 2 years.

HEATHER BRYANTVice President, Cancer ControlCanadian Partnership Against Cancer CanadaMember, UICC Board of Directors 2012-2014

BIOGRAPHYDr Bryant is a public health physician and epidemiologist with a long career in population-based cancer control. In 1990, at the Alberta Cancer Board, she implemented the first population-based breast screening programme in the province. She has chaired many national committees in Canada on screening, research, and cancer control, and has worked extensively with cancer registries. She has been Vice President Cancer Control at the Canadian Partnership

Against Cancer since 2008, and is charged with implementing the Canadian cancer control strategy with partners throughout the country. This includes initiatives in prevention, screening, quality care, the person-centered experience, and systems performance reporting.

WHAT SKILLS AND INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE CAN YOU BRING TO THE UICC BOARD OF DIRECTORS?Over the years, I have worked with many cancer control partners – the public, policymakers, professionals, researchers, health agencies, and many others – developing skills in mobilising these teams to realise significant cancer control impact. International roles have included embership on the Governing Council for the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), executive of the International Association of Cancer Registries (IACR), Board Member for the International Cancer Benchmarking Programme (an international analysis of survival and public attitudes towards cancer), and a cancer control working group for the World Health Organisation (WHO). I have been a member of the UICC Board since 2012, chairing the Policy Committee. It’s also been my privilege to co-chair the Scientific Programme for the 2012 and 2014 UICC World Cancer Congresses. I have seen positive changes in the past two years, and am committed to helping UICC develop further for the benefit of all its members.

WHICH OF UICC’S PRIORITY AREAS CAN YOU BE INVOLVED IN TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE?UICC is developing its strategic plan which, when implemented, will further cancer and non-communicable control goals throughout the world. This is similar to the work we have done at the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer; we build strong partnerships to synergise activity and accelerate progress nationwide, while recognising that the actual care and healthcare anagement decisions are made by our partners in their own jurisdictions. I believe that the UICC can similarly use these skills to build synergies among other international organisations, and with its members, to advance cancer control in all countries, regardless of their resources or current cancer burden.

RAUL MURILLOGeneral Director National Cancer Institute of ColombiaColombia

BIOGRAPHYMD, MPH. Training on International Health with focus on non-communicable diseases prevention and control. Currently General Director of the Colombian NCI (official advisor of the MoH for cancer control policies and program development). Fifteen years on cancer research with leadership in research programs aimed at improving cancer control in LMIC. Collaborator member of the IARC, the BHGI, the PAHO and other international organisations working in the field of cancer prevention and control. Member

of executive boards of Colombian NGO’s dedicated to advocacy and patient support.

WHAT SKILLS AND INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE CAN YOU BRING TO THE UICC BOARD OF DIRECTORS? As a cancer researcher I have been involved in successful initiatives on cancer registration and epidemiology, as well as on cancer prevention and early detection. The leading position in a governmental institution has allowed me to participate in policy development and program implementation not only in the abovementioned fields but also in health services organisation and access to cancer care. Currently the Colombian NCI plays a relevant role in the region in major topics around cancer control such as cancer registries, cervical and breast cancer early detection, childhood cancer, HPV vaccination, and implementation research. My personal experience as leader of this Institution provides me with a broad perspective on the needs and suitable alternatives for cancer control in limited resource settings. This experience is complementary to the knowledge gained as an active participant of international initiatives led by different organisations including the academy, NGO´s, and multilateral institutions.

WHICH OF UICC’S PRIORITY AREAS CAN YOU BE INVOLVED IN TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE?My essential contribution would be based on the perspective of LMIC. Expanding training programs coverage for distant regions through information and communication technologies is needed. In addition, promoting skills and knowledge development and transfer around implementation science would be an asset for enhancing cancer control in low resourced settings, particularly regarding the introduction of alternative technologies and novel programmatic approaches. Disparities in early detection between developed and developing countries make an enormous difference on cancer preventable mortality, so increasing activities in the field beyond cervical cancer may be an option to reduce worldwide inequalities. Cancer registration is vital for future planning and evaluation; however, it takes long time, great effort, and significant resources to consolidate; thus, finding alternatives to improve planning and evaluation in the near future is highly desirable for LMIC.
