FROM THE PRESIDENT

2018/19 was another successful year for Canberra Rowing Club. We continue to grow our participation base through our Learn to Row Program and our new Social and Intermediate Rowing Program, and we ran very successful Corporate Rowing and Schools Winter Rowing Programs. Importantly, although we have seen a slight drop in our senior Membership numbers from 2017/18 to 2018/19, the new financial year has commenced with three new Members and several applications still inprogress.

Our Members produced great results at local, interstate and National regattas, reinforcing our position as the largest and most successful Club in the ACT, and through our results at the Trickett Regatta, ACT Championships, and NSW Masters Regatta, we continue to be among the more successful local Clubs in Australia. Thank you to all Members who contributed to our success this year. Further details are contained in the Captain’s Report.

Our Coaches are to be commended for their tireless efforts again this year, volunteering their time to help us all chase that elusive perfect technique. Excitingly, we saw some new faces take to the tinny (and the cox seat) as Coaches across our Squads and participation programs, and I look forward to seeing this continue as we grow our participation base. Thank you to Mark Kwiatkowski, Geoff Brown, Edwin Bien, Alison Chinn, Dermot Balaam, Suze Rogashoff, Darryl Ninham, Peter Chivers, Pat Davoren, Tony Wilkes, John Daley, Loren Parsons, and Anne Nicolay. The Club would not be what is today without your help and dedication.

It was with great sadness that we farewelled a wonderful coach and Member of the rowing community this year, Nick Garratt AM. Nick coached and supported many of our Members and was a wonderful friend to Canberra Rowing Club. He will be greatly missed on Lake Burley Griffin and throughout the rowing community.

To our Club Captain, Tom Trobe and Vice Captains, Dermot Balaam and Tim Hodges, thank you for your efforts in maintaining our fleet and equipment, ensuring we had boats for training and racing, submitting our entries, and organising our participation in interstate regattas. You have made huge contributions to our overall success, on and off the water. I’d also like to thank Tim for his work as Safety Officer, assisting the Club with First Aid and Working with Vulnerable People qualifications. A special mention also goes to Pat Davoren for all his help in maintaining our fleet and equipment.

The Club also ran another successful Corporate Rowing Program, introducing teams from the Department of Defence, Department of Jobs and Small Business, Soldier On, Soda Strategic and the Australian Federal Police to our sport, and providing them with an excellent team-b 2 uilding and learning experience. Importantly, the

success of the program providing vital funding to support the New Boathouse Project.

Our Financial Statements demonstrate that the Club finished the year in a strong position, with a significant operating surplus more than double that of the previous year. More will be said about this in the Treasurer’s report. What is important to note is that our focus on improving systems will continue to deliver efficiencies across our financial management practices. I thank our Treasurer, Katie Tagg, for her tireless work.

A key feature of this year included our progress with the New Boathouse Project. With Project funds now closing in on $600,000, the Project is progressing through the next phases of planning. As we look to our neighbours building their new boathouse, I am buoyed by the positive response from Members about the Project and our plans for moving forward. 2019/20 will be an exciting year for the Club, as we explore our funding options for the Project, particularly fundraising, and as we work together as a community in support of this project – a project that will ultimately help secure our success and our home for the next 50 years.

The timely renewal of the Club’s five-year Strategic Plan presents us with an opportunity to review our current activities across all areas including Operations, Facilities and Equipment, Participation and Performance, to develop our commitment and connection as a community, and to set milestones to measure our success. I look forward to the opportunity that this presents for the Club to unite under agreed common goals.

Thank you also to former President, Geoff Brown, who has served the Membership and the Club with pride and commitment over the last few years. Geoff led the Club through most of this year, and contributed as a Coach, racing Member, and more recently supported our neighbours, the Australian Defence Force, in their Kings Cup campaign.

To all Members of the 2018/19 Committee, thank you for your work and your contribution to the growth and continued success of the Club.

To the Canberra Rowing Community, it has been a big year on and off the water. As always, I am very proud to represent this Club and look forward to the future that we will build together.

CAPTAIN’S REPORT

It has been another busy year as the Club Captain of the Canberra Rowing Club.

Season Highlights • Australian National Championship

o Tom Perry retaining open lightweight men’s quad titleo Tom Perry part of the ACT Lightweight Men’s Four that placed third

–for the second consecutive year• Club performance at Australian Masters Rowing Championships

o Four gold medalso John Simson winning his age divisions in the single and second in

the Champion of Champions• NSW Grade Championships and Masters Championships

o Topped the medal table at Edward Trickett Regatta (eight gold, six silver and two bronze)

o Third on the medal table NSW Masters Championships (nine gold, three silver and two bronze)

• Most successful Club at the ACT Championshipso Retained Phere Niki Trophy (Club with highest point score from ACT

Championship regatta)

o Retained the Men’s and Overall Premiership

Equipment The Club was successful with an ACT Government grant to support the replacement of the Tachycardia 4-. The Club has purchased new Sykes Carbon Coxless 4- (mould 409). The weight range is 57.5 to 82.5kg. Four Crocker Arrow Sweep Oars have also been purchased for the new Four. While the boat will be a Four, it is quick release to support becoming a Quad in the future.

It was also great to purchase two top of the line Nielsen Kellerman (NK) GPS CoxBoxes. The current NK Cox Boxes have been refurbished and had batteries replaced but it is no longer economical to maintain them. The Club is workingtowards other grant options to replace more of the aged Cox Boxes.

It was extremely pleasing to have thee ergs donated to the Club last year. Erg training is growing in the evenings and having a sufficient quantity for testing has assisted with coordinating. As part of the grant efforts for Cox Boxes, we are also working towards acquiring additional ergs.

Equipment damage has been at a manageable level over the past 12 months and greatly supported by the repairs from within the Club by Pat Davoren. Damage at the

7

water’s edge has reduced with greater care. A reminder to everyone that you cannot go wrong with a slow cautious landing.

Overall – the fleet of boats is in good condition and a good variety available.

Programs Learn to Row has gone from strength to strength and the Club continues to run this program weekly on Sundays, offering the community the opportunity to come down and try rowing. In addition, the Club launched an intermediate program this year, Social and Intermediate Rowing, to provide a transition program that supports rowers as they become more capable and with a view to progressing them to Squads or self-sufficient rowing.

The Schools Winter Program was a great success in 2018/19, improving the skills of 36 local junior rowers and providing them with the opportunity to interact in the Club environment.

The Club continues to work with the University of Canberra in building the UC and CRC rowing program. This falls in line with the positioning of the University as a prominent sporting institution in Australia. As each semester commences, we have signs of interest from students moving to Canberra for study or progressing to University. Currently, the numbers are low, but the foundations are there and we lookforward to welcoming more students in 2019/20.

Competition Throughout the 2018/19 season, the Club has maintained a high level of competition across all regatta formats. In addition to the local six standard regattas and ACT Championships, the Club travelled to eight interstate. This season has seen great energy and support when travelling. After every regatta, all boats were rigged, and all other equipment packed away.

All Members of the Club have contributed to these amazing results. Thank you to the Members who organise crews, entries, and training.

A huge thank you to all the Coaches and Coxes – the season’s results would not be achievable with your tireless efforts and commitment.

Elite The Club has continued to see remarkable results from Tom Perry. He has maintained his prominent level of training and competition throughout the season.

Page 9: CANBERRA ROWING CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019 · rowing community this year, Nick Garratt AM. Nick coached and supported many of our Members and was a wonderful friend to Canberra Rowing

8

At the Australian National Championships, Tom was part of the winning Lightweight Quad and the ACT Interstate Lightweight Four that placed third – this equalled the best result for the ACT in this event from the previous year.

Cormac Hayes has progressed up the ranks with a joint training program with CRC, ACTAS, and Marist. Cormac placed second at the NSW Championships with the Schoolboy Single – an amazing effort from a field of 30 entries. He was also part of a composite Open Men’s Lightweight Eight that placed first.

Club Grade The Club Grade program has built on the previous year’s efforts in the local rowing scene and at interstate regattas. This is evident with strong participation across a broad range of grades and boat classes.

Season highlights: • Solid participation in grade regattas locally and interstate

• Participation by Katie Tagg and Sandra Sweeney in the Women’s ClubDouble at the Australian National Championships

• Winning 16 medals at Ed Trickett regatta in SIRC (eight gold, six silver, andtwo bronze medals). This effort placed CRC in first place for the regatta.

• Growth in administration from within the Squads – critical to the continuedprogram and sustainability

The above efforts are due to the organisation and coaching efforts from Geoff, Mark, Alison, and Edwin.

Marist School The Marist program has become a self-sufficient Club. This is a great achievement for the group and another school program incubated by the Club. As such, our Junior Membership numbers are reduced in current reporting.

Masters The Masters have had a successful season again, traveling around the country and world and solidifying that Canberra Rowing Club is a force to be reckoned with in Masters divisions.

Locally, the masters participated strongly in the grade system. The participation and results at the ACT Championships were also again an outstanding effort.

The Head of the Goulburn regatta was attended by 30 Members of the Club. The regatta is open to all boat classes of the 7.2km course – and finishes at a winery. At the NSW Masters Championship, CRC placed third, with 14 medals (nine gold, three silver, and two bronze).

Page 10: CANBERRA ROWING CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2019 · rowing community this year, Nick Garratt AM. Nick coached and supported many of our Members and was a wonderful friend to Canberra Rowing

9

Again, a small contingent of CRC Masters travelled across to Perth for the Australian Masters Championships. There was a broad range of entries from the Club. A notable mention of John Simson – winning his age category in the single and placed second in the Champion of Champions race.

A huge thank to the coordinating volunteers and trailer towers. These are large regattas and every bit of help is greatly appreciated by all.

Coaching Again, the volunteer coaches have been contributing tireless hours to the Club to help rowers of all ages and abilities improve their rowing and results. We are extremely lucky to have a team of Edwin, Alison, Mark, Geoff, and Dermot. Many of the above-mentioned results and outstanding performances are due to the efforts of the coaches.

I would like to mention the efforts that have gone into the Learn to Row and Social and Intermediate Rowing Program by Dermott Balaam, Suze Rogashoff, Peter Chivers, Pat Daveron and Anne Nicolay.

It has been another enjoyable season as captain of the Canberra Rowing Club. Thank you for all the support I have received from the committee and Members.

ROWING ACT REPORT All clubs and schools in the ACT have a responsibility to support RACT in performing its role of organising and running safe and fair regattas activities. Regattas depend upon a large, committed volunteer base. As the largest affiliated club in Canberra, Canberra Rowing Club must be a leader in setting the standard in supporting RACT. Support is delivered by our members through RACT Board membership, serving on subcommittees, the Union of Boat Race Officials and regular volunteering. Club members Alison Chinn and Alison Creagh are both appointed to the RACT Board. Both serve on several subcommittees. Alison Chinn is RACT’s Regatta Secretary. In 2018, RACT’s nominee, Alison Chinn, was short-listed for Rowing Australia Volunteer of the Year. Tom Trobe serves as Chair of the Regatta Subcommittee. Edwin Bien, Alan Butorac, Brendon Prout, and Anne Charlton are active members of the Union of Boat Race Officials. Club members Maxine James and Scott Pagan have had a busy year maintaining the rowing course. RACT life members Mark Kwiatkowski and Patrick Davoren assist with regatta organisation and support the Rowing ACT Board. Patrick Davoren was made a life member at the 2018 RACT AGM. RACT awards the Cliff Hill Shield each year to those who provide an outstanding contribution to our rowing community. This year it was Vicky Newman and Graham Letcher to recognise and thank them for the years contributing to RACT in many ways. Most would be aware of the photos they take of every regatta. This Shield has been presented to CRC members in recent years (2018 Tom Trobe, 2017 Edwin Bien). We thank Geoff Northam for his commitment to our regattas for all the work he does as Chief Boat Race Official. The aforementioned people are of great benefit to the rowing community in Canberra. Thank you all for your contribution. RACT Staff In July 2019, Rowing ACT was devastated by the loss of High-Performance Coach, Nick Garratt. Nick’s results over the last two years have been impressive for Rowing ACT. At the National Championships, specifically with the lightweight interstate four are a testament to his abilities, dedication, and passion. He is a great loss to the rowing community, locally, nationally and internationally. Nick had been working with CRC on the school pathways program.

11

Renae Domaschenz continues as part time Pathways Coach. Katrina Wiseman is part-time High-Performance Co-ordinator. Stuart John was employed in September 2018 as Executive Officer of Rowing ACT. Regattas The regatta program runs nearly all year with Winter Time Trials from May to September, and the premiership program from October to April. In addition to these regattas, RACT also runs the Head of the Lake, the Head of the Molonglo, the Col Panton Memorial Marathon, the Lake Tuggeranong Sprints and the Capital Lake Sprint regatta. The 2018-19 regatta season saw the introduction of zonal umpiring to reduce the amount of wash on the course and provide a safer environment on the pontoons. This initiative has been a huge success. Infrastructure RACT is developing an infrastructure program to secure our assets and further improve the amenity for rowers, spectators and boat race officials at Weston Park and Lady Denman Drive. As part of the infrastructure program, RACT installed a fourth boating pontoon to our regatta site. This will provide permanent two inflow and two outflow pontoons at regattas to expedite traffic flow to and from the site.

TREASURER’S REPORT Over 2018/19, the Club achieved an operating surplus of $102,637 (up from $45,146 the previous year), with a cash position of $562,078 as at 30 April 2019 (up by 22 per cent on 2017/18). The Club retained a strong membership base through 2018/19, with income of $99,421 (down by nine per cent). The 2018/19 Corporate Rowing Program saw significant participation from organisations across the ACT, generating net income of $17,851. Further, our Winter Program, Learn to Row and newly-established Social and Intermediate Rowing Program provided the club with additional income streams. The Club expects to see a proportion of those participating in Learn to Row and the Social and Intermediate Rowing Program convert to full membership in the 2019-20 financial year. The Committee focussed heavily this year on fundraising. We saw $16,038 in net income on fundraising (up 145 per cent), as well as $13,125 received in grant funds. The Committee is thankful to all our donors for their contributions to the Club. In the 2018/19 financial year, the Committee successfully recouped $4,810 in fines paid to the ATO, had three boats added to the fleet, three new ergs, and a new tinny motor. Finally, the Club engaged a new auditor this year, Paul Schwartz Chartered Accountant. The audited financial statements are supplied herein. Katie Tagg Treasurer
