Canberra is capital Canberra is capital It is 100 years since the naming of the area that would become our national capital. “THE surveyor will bear in mind that the Federal Capital should be a beauti- ful city, occupying a commanding posi- tion, with extensive views, and embrac- ing distinctive features which will lend themselves to the evolution of a design worthy of the object, not only for the present, but for all time...” – so said the Honourable Hugh Mahon Our nation’s capital has a story to tell. This year marks 100 years since the naming of Canberra – a city that holds our country’s achievements and aspirations within its well designed streetscape and chilly winters. The official founding of Canberra was March 12, 1913 when the Laying of the Foundation Stones naming ceremony on Capital Hill, took place. This day is now celebrated as Canberra Day. However even though we accept that Canberra is Australia’s capital it could have been otherwise. After Federation in 1901, one of the first questions consi- dered by the new Australian Common- wealth Government was the site for the nation’s capital. A “battle of the sites” raged, with the Federal parliamentar- ians of the time visiting many potential sites until the final historic vote in the House of Representatives, on October 8, 1908, saw Yass-Canberra selected. Surveyor Charles Scrivener and his team completed a survey of Canberra, on February 25, 1909 based on instruc- tions from the Minister for Home Af- fairs, Hugh Mahon. In 1911 an international design compe- tition for Canberra attracted 137 nation- al and international entries. American Walter Burley Griffin’s elegant design was the eventual winner. Today, Canberra, the urban centre of the ACT, is a thriving modern city of around 367,000 people. It is the meeting place for the Commonwealth Parlia- ment, home of national museums and attractions that share the treasures of our nation, a place that celebrates our nation’s proud sporting achievements and honours those who have fought for our country and reflects our indigenous culture. It is a well planned city set within extensive parks and gardens and enjoys four distinct seasons. It’s a cen- tral to our country – a place where you can discover attractions which house many aspects out our identity.
