MONTHLY INVESTMENTNEWSLETTER

APRIL

Data Sources: The factual information mentioned above pertaining to market performance has been taken from National Stock Exchange website, CRISIL Customized Bond fund index, Reserve Bank of India and Bloomberg.

Market commentary April 2021 Nifty 50 remained resilient, falling only 0.4% in the month of April in 2021, compared to far steeper fall seen during the early phase of the first COVID wave last year. Better preparedness of both the government and businesses, vaccination drive and the general policy direction towards partial lock downs (versus full lock down last year) have put the equity markets in a 'see through' mode for now. Earnings growth is expected to be healthy in 4QFY21 due to low base. We may see impact on the earnings in 1QFY21 due to lockdowns. However, long term growth remains intact due to vaccination programme and government reforms. Metal prices have continued their uptrend through April due to supply constraints and expected to remain higher due to cancellation of tax rebate on multiple steel exports by China; which is likely to have earning upgrades of metal companies, but likely to impact end user industries. Even though the equity markets are showing resilience, the volatility remains high given the uncertainty in the environment. Foreign Institutions (FII) sold Rs.2,655.7 crores (approx.) worth of equities in the April month and Domestic Institutions sold Rs.476.9 crores (approx.) worth of equities.

The month of April started with the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) continuing to maintain its commitment of holding onto the current policy rates and its accommodative stance. While the MPC acknowledged risk to both inflation and growth but we feel that the Reserve Bank of India would hold on to the policy rates till growth recovers unconditionally on a durable basis. RBI also decided to experiment with pre committed secondary market purchase called G-SAP (Gsec secondary market acquisition programme). Under the programme, the RBI will commit up front to a specific amount of open market purchases of government securities with a view to enabling a stable and orderly evolution of the yield curve amidst comfortable liquidity conditions. The endeavor is to ensure congenial financial conditions for the recovery to gain traction. RBI announced a G-SAP of ?1 lakh crore for Q1 2021-22. Other than the above it also mentioned extension of Targeted Long term Repo (TLTRP) program till September 2021 to provide liquidity support to key sectors.

On the global front the US saw its Q1CY21 GDP rise to 6.4% from 4.3% sequentially led by growth in personal consumption growth of 10.7% QoQ. China saw its manufacturing Purchasing Manager Index(PMI) moderate to 51.1 in Apr'21 from 51.9 signaling some moderation in recovery. There was a drop in export order (50.4 in Apr from 51.2 in Mar'21). Non manufacturing PMI too eased to 54.9 in Apr'21 from 56.3 in Mar'21.Globally the yields continued to remain firm driven by optimism on Global recovery and higher vaccination. Crude prices also remained elevated supported by recovery in US and Eurozone.

Going forward we believe, the MPC will keep the repo rate unchanged and remain accommodative in the foreseeable future. Even as inflation remains a concern, the RBI will use the available policy space innovatively in order to support growth and maintain adequate liquidity. While the ongoing surge in COVID-19 cases remains a cause of concern we still believe that the impact on GDP for the full year may not be substantially high. We therefore, continue to expect the yields to remain range bound.

Equities by nature are a volatile asset class and in general, provide higher return than other asset classes in the long term to compensate for the volatility. Long term horizon in equity investments is best suited to maximize the returns.
