Canal Revetment Project
Due to the 2004 & 2005 storm season, the client’s intake and discharge canals experienced erosion. UESI was selected as the design-build contractor based on our technical proposal. The repair involved the use of a cutterhead / suction dredge to reach project design depth of 32 feet; restoration of the canal embankments with a mixture of No. 57 stone and coarse sand; two geotextile fabric layers sandwiching a drainage layer of stone; and an Articulated Concrete Block (ACB) Mat placed on top to armor the canal. A grout-filled fabric mat was utilized in areas of no crane access. Due to the geometry of the 32-foot-deep canals, the embankment averaged 150 feet wide, with 65 percent of the project being underwater. Embankments were constructed utilizing GPS grading equipment that allowed operators to visualize bucket placement on a screen. UESI met all of the client’s safety, quality and site access standards regarding work at a nuclear power facility. UESI crews removed and replaced two boardwalks along the embankment. UESI crews began placing mats on December 21, 2007 and project was 100% complete by June 2010, which was six months ahead of schedule. Completion Date: June 2010 UESI Job Number: COM2007222
