WELCOME TO CCE2020It was only four years ago that Canadian Concrete Expo was an idea on a piece of paper. Fast forward those years as we now welcome you to the 3rd Annual CCE. With barely 100,000 sq. ft of floor space in that first year and approximately 150 exhibitors, CCE has become one of North Ameri-ca’s fastest growing trade shows and we expect this growth to continue for many years to come.

We are grateful for the industry support that has been received from coast to coast and are growing into the national and international show that we envisioned years ago. New at CCE 2020 are a record number of exhibitors plus the additions of our bilingual website and marketing program and multiple networking events. We are slowly transforming from a show to an important national industry event for Canada’s concrete construction industry.

I am very thankful to have the excellent support and commitment from our show team at 20/20 Show Productions Inc. and from the fabulous suppliers that we have partnered with to compliment our “Service First” attitude that has always been the leading theme in our 30 years of producing trade and consumer shows.

On behalf of our entire team I would like to thank all of our Sponsors, (in-cluding our 2 Title Sponsors SIKA Canada and PROCORE) exhibitors, Asso-ciations and especially those that take the time out of their busy schedules to attend.

We hope that you seek and find the proper suppliers, partners, education and business interaction that support your company’s objectives of thriving and prospering in the future.

Sincerely,

Stuart E. GallowayPresident20/20 Show Productions Inc.And Canadian Concrete Expo

Today’s Shotcrete TechnologyJackson Rand, Technical Sales EIT, King - A Sika Company

Shotcrete is a method of applying concrete projected at high velocity primarily on to a vertical or overhead surface. The impact created by the application consolidates the concrete. Although the hardened properties of shotcrete are similar to those of conventional cast-in-place concrete, the nature of the placement process results in an excellent bond with most substrates, and rapid or instant capabilities, particularly on complex forms or shapes. The shotcrete process requires less formwork and can be more economical than conventionally placed concrete. This session will cover current shotcrete technologies for dry-mix and wet-mix processes, and it will also include recent local case studies.

Expect moderate growth for Canada in 2020. Most forecasters are expecting gross domestic product (GDP) growth to be around the 2% mark. The Bank of Canada, for example, predicts 2.1% growth in 2020, whereas Business Development Canada (BDC) expects 1.7% growth.

In 2019, Canada’s growth was held back by some inter-nal factors and it is expected that Canada grew at just 1.5% that year. In 2020, Canada’s real estate market, residential investment and household consumption will grow, leading to a slightly higher GDP growth.

The Bank of Canada has not changed interest rates in more than a year and is expected to hold the overnight interest rate at 1.75% for 2020.

Many countries experienced slower growth in 2019. And slower growth translates into weaker demand, which puts downward pressure on the price of Cana-da’s oil and other exports.

In 2020, the world will face many of the geopolitical challenges it faced in 2019 (trade wars between the US and China, tariffs, uncertainty about the new NAFTA deal, Brexit, physical conflicts in the Middle East and political unrest in Hong Kong). These events have the power to spill over their borders and negatively affect Canada’s GDP growth in 2020, however, if they get re-solved in a positive way, could boost world economic growth.

US Economy

The US is experiencing more than a decade of expan-sion—its longest period of expansion in more than 150 years. Moody’s deputy chief economist, Cris deRitis,

said at Dodge’s Construction Outlook Conference in Chicago last October that if a recession should occur, it would be one of the shortest and least severe, and that he does not expect one to occur in 2020.

The US economy was robust in 2019 (2.9% GDP growth) and is expected to produce 2% GDP growth in 2020—bolstered by consumer confidence, improve-ments in the housing market, positive job growth and rising household incomes.

The Portland Cement Association (PCA) has releases a two-year forecast of moderate growth in cement con-sumption (January 2020-December 2021) in the US. It projected growth of 1.7% in 2020, slowing slightly to 1.4% in 2021, corresponding to projected 2.1% (2020) and 1.7% (2021) GDP growth.

“One of the sources of strength for the US economy over the last year has been a pickup in infrastructure spending,” said Anirban Basu, Chief Economist, Associ-ated Builders and Contractors. “Several key construc-tion segments have benefitted as a result, including wa-ter/sewer, transportation and highway/street.”

Construction starts with people

“A good starting point for talking about construction is population growth,” says Alex Carrick Chief Economist, Construct Connect. “Canada’s population growth rate last year was 1.4%, which is higher than almost any-where in the world.” By contrast, the US’s population growth for the same year was 0.6% and Germany was 0.2%; Japan has a declining population.

At 1.4% population growth, Canada adds half a million people (births plus migration); Ontario adds half that

Continued Growth This Year—and Then…Canada’s construction industry transitions in tumultuous times

amount of people (250,000) and Toronto adds half of Ontario’s total (125,000). The province of Quebec adds 100,000 people and B.C. and Alberta each add 70,000 peo-ple.

“Population growth is Canada’s secret weapon,” says Car-rick. “Everyone talks about the growth in the US, but if you look at annual average GDP growth rates of the US and Canada over the past 17 years, you will see they are exactly the same—2.1%.”

From oil and gas to offices and condos

Over the past decade, there have not been the same num-ber of megaprojects as there were in the 00’s,” says Car-rick. “A lot of mega projects are tied to the oil and gas in-dustry and that is where Canada has lost its way, and that’s problematic for segments of construction. Instead, Canada is transitioning very much towards a high-tech sector. A lot of the new high-tech jobs needs offices. This will boost of-fice construction. Toronto is booming with office construc-tion.

The RLB Crane Index Q3 2019 published by Chica-go-based consulting firm Rider Levett Bucknall states that there were 120 cranes in operation in Toronto in the third quarter of 2019.

The RLB Crane Index Q3 2019 published by Chica-go-based consulting firm Rider Levett Bucknall states that there were 120 cranes in operation in Toronto in the third quarter of 2019. Los Angeles and Seattle, which each had 49 cranes, were the cities with the sec-ond highest number of cranes. Calgary is third with 34 cranes.

According to the publication, in Toronto, “residential and mixed-use projects command the local construc-tion market; in the future, increased infrastructure spending is anticipated to trigger additional activity.” And in Calgary, “high-rise multifamily projects are mak-ing an impact on the Calgary skyline. The downtown area sees additions in the University District, East Vil-lage, and the Beltline areas, echoing that increase with office, commercial, mixed-use, healthcare, and infra-structure construction underway.”

“Toronto’s crane count is tied to condo construction—it’s tied to population growth, as well as office construc-tion and cement is a major player in condo construction and housing starts,” says Carrick.

Looking further ahead

According to BuildForce Canada, following two de-cades of almost uninterrupted growth, construction activity in Canada is expected to plateau after 2020, as demands driven by major energy, public transpor-tation, and other infrastructure projects rise to a near-term peak. Growth is concentrated in British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec; LNG, nuclear refurbishment, and infrastructure projects drive that growth. In the second half of the scenario period, construction activity picks up in infrastructure renewal, rising maintenance work, and higher levels of industrial, commercial, and institu-tional (ICI) building construction. New home starts will remain weak until 2023 put will pick up in the follow-ing years. In the meantime, people will invest heavily in home renovations. Construction employment nation-ally is expected to remain relatively unchanged com-pared to the 2018 starting point, rising by just 44,100 jobs (+4%).
