Canadian Art Major Project
Painting has been a part of recorded the human experience for
thousands of years.
People painted to communicate ideas before they had an official language to express themselves.
When we are children we draw to express ourselves before we can speak or read.
Some believe that visual language is our first language.
But we don’t all see the world in the same way.
A painting is a creative visual description of a person, place or idea.
Our painting project topic will be :
Canadian Painting
and the way it is a creative visual description of this place we call ‘Canada’.
Early Canadian Art explored the ‘new frontier’ and documented the
way of life.
Cornelius Krieghoff (Canadian, 1815-72) Breaking Up of a Country Ball in Canada, Early Morning, 1857
Paul Kane (Canadian, 1810-1871)Scene in the Northwest, 1845-1846
The Group of Seven were a collective of Canadian artists who were convinced that a nation could only be a true nation when it had its own strong style of art. The Canadian landscape was unique and these artists chose that as their subject
matter.
