MAINTENANCEWEDnESDAY, JUnE 2608:45 – 15:45Cockpit Avionics UpgradeLooking ahead to looming mandates and wondering how to evaluate options for a cockpit upgrade? In this session, you will hear directly from a panel of representatives from across North America about the trends they are seeing in the cockpit refurb/upgrade market, and how these manufacturers have thought-out their 20-year plans.

Learning Objectives:• Learn about the trends in the cockpit refurb/upgrade market

and what the future may bring• Understand the challenges and considerations to evaluate

before upgrading an existing aircraft

10:30 – 11:30Cabin Telephony and High-Speed Data System UpgradeConsidering the addition of high-speed data, WiFi, telephony or other connectivity as part of an interior refurb project? Do you have executives or owners who are trying to remain “in-touch” while airborne on longer missions? This session will put you in front of a panel of representatives from across the industry who will shed some light on what keeps you up at night.

Learning Objectives:• Understand available options and their advantages

in remote troubleshooting (using platforms like Skype)• Learn how to evaluate systems based on particular need and mission requirements

13:15 – 14:15MandatesAs EuroControl, EASA, ICAO, FAA, and Transport Canada design and implement requirements for growth of air traffic, staying ahead of the curve is becoming more daunting – as are the repercussions for missing a deadline. Is it better to get into a program early while the cost may be lower, or wait for a more mature platform?

Learning Objectives:• Learn about what’s here now, what is on the immediate horizon,

and what can be expected in the future?• Learn about aging aircraft issues, and the effect of current Stage 4,

and looming Stage 5 noise requirements

14:45 – 15:45Everything You Need to Know About Your OEM but Were Afraid to AskAre you new to a manufacturer? Have you been with the same one for years and still don’t know who to call when you need help? No time to cross the continent and tour a manufacturer’s service and support network? This session will give the major aircraft manufacturers a few minutes each to provide you with a high-level review of what options exist for you when you need help. In some cases, operators don’t really know what they don’t know . . . especially when they’re new to that OEM.

Learning Objectives:• Be able to make an educated decision on buying an aircraft• Understand what you should expect after the purchase of an aircraft

09:45 – 11:15Managing Vigilance, Distraction, and Boredom on an Automated Flight Deck Shannon Forrest, FlightSafety InternationalLoss of vigilance and distraction can lead to impaired situational awareness. Both have been implicated as a causal factor in aviation accidents. The use of electronic tablets and smart phones by crewmembers complicates the situation. These devices have many useful applications and yet can also be distracting. Some regulatory agencies seek to ban or limit the use of the devices. The question is whether this technology can be used to enhance vigilance, decrease complacency, and eliminate boredom during extended flight operations. This CRM -based presentation discusses the effects of boredom, distraction, and vigilance decrement, and considers strategies to decrease complacency and maintain situational awareness.

11:30 – 12:15Upset Prevention and Recovery TrainingRandall Brooks, Aviation Performance SolutionsThe orientation to Upset Prevention and Recovery Training (UPRT) provides an explanation of the systemic training challenges leading to Loss of Control in Flight becoming the predominate cause of fatal accidents for business and commercial aviation worldwide. Comprehensive training solutions are presented along with the importance of an integrated approach to UPRT.

11:15 – 12:15 SMS for an Aviation Department – Hitting the High PointsDave Dueck, Dueck AviationAre you being asked more often about putting the Safety Management System program together for your flight department? Whether or not you get the ball rolling or think you might “catch” the ball, SMS compliance is becoming more and more interrelated with the maintenance department. The difference between operations and maintenance is interesting: In operations, actions can go horribly wrong. In the maintenance department, inaction can go horribly wrong.

13:30-14:30Quality Auditing within an SMS – Going Beyond Regulatory ComplianceGary Grass, president Abante Intelligent Solutions Inc.If regulation creates the framework for aviation safety; if SMS is a systematic and comprehensive process to manage safety risk, how can we be sure these systems are working across our organization?Your maintenance team may have created elegant policy, process and procedures, but where is the proof they are being used? What about flight operations and administrative support quality? Are your team members accountable, and active participants in continuous improvement? Take a quality journey, share lessons learned among peers and explore the “ruthless application of quality” while learning about the global “Quality Paradox.”
