Remote, culture-rich towns that cling to their old-world charm. Hidden waterfalls. Adventures on a zipline, mountain bike and whitewater raft. The International Selkirk
Loop crosses the border but the mantra is the same – explore and experience until your heart is content. Discover eclectic art galleries, vibrant mountain towns, stunning turn-of-the-century architecture, gourmet dining, live music and festivals – all wrapped in an authentic, out-there vibe that can only be found in grand, off-the-grid locales.
Incomparable scenic beauty is waiting to be explored around every corner – crystal clear rivers, lakes, waterfalls, beaches, mineral hot springs, alpine meadows and snow-capped mountains.
Outdoor pursuits here are epic – the area is one of Canada’s pre-eminent destinations for hiking and mountain biking, as well as for whitewater rafting. There are also opportunities to visit restored heritage towns, thriving arts communities and gold rush boomtowns.
View the detailed itineraries for these Road Trips and more online at KootenayRockies.com.

In the warm evening glow, settle into a mountain resort where wine tastings and locally-inspired food will win your heart.
Quiet roads that twist through the heart of the British Columbia wilderness. Dense forests that yield to rising rock
and glacier-scoured summits where only the bravest mountaineers have ventured. A place to be respected and admired. Stunning backcountry beauty is around every corner on the West Koot Route. Soak it in. Stop for a hike, paddle a perfect lake, fling a fly in a trout-filled stream and find your little patch of paradise in the West Kootenay.
Where the prairies meet the mountains. Cowboy country. These are lands wild and vast. Sacred, sweeping views that
Indigenous people have honoured and revered for centuries. The allure of the Rockies & Ranchlands route speaks to romantics, ranchmen and railroading enthusiasts. Explore heritage gold rush towns, mountain resorts, national parks, antique stores, a sacred buffalo jump and western themed villages.

Lined with soaring, jagged mountains covered in snow and ice, the Golden Triangle features some of the most scintillating scenes in Canada. Enjoy never-
ending views of the Columbia Valley Wetlands (one of the longest intact wetlands in North America) and embark on a trek-of-a-lifetime as you saunter into the natural world where rushing rivers, emerald lakes and sky-high peaks dominate the landscape. After the exploration, unwind in a timber-framed mountain lodge, refuel with a gourmet meal and relax by the crackling fire.
Journey into the wild-west past when bars and brothels, saloons and silver, ruled the day. Wander through pristine forests, swerve along scenic single-track, hike through an alpine meadow filled
with wildflowers and visit an ancient ghost town – rich with mine ruins, an eclectic museum and turn-of-the-century buildings – that beckons anyone with a taste for adventure. End your day by easing into a lakeside town where cool cafés, streetside markets and renowned restaurants will give you a ‘taste’ of this region’s famous mountain culture.

This map of the Kootenay Rockies region is intended as a locator map only and is designed to be used in conjunction with the BC Road Map and Parks Guide available at Visitor Centres.
Printed in Canada for Free Distribution.
the kootenay rockies is british columbia’s powder highwayNot much tops skiing down a gorgeous, pine-lined run with deep pillow-soft powder beneath your feet. The Kootenay Rockies’ Powder Highway, an adventure-filled highway-to-heaven that’s peppered with world-class ski resorts, is more than just the epic skiing and boarding.
Snowshoeing, fat biking, dog sledding and snowmobiling are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to off-piste activities. The Kootenay Rockies is your road to winter – discover the myriad of winter experiences.
BACKCOUNTRYThousands of hectares of unspoiled, uninhabited terrain in the Kootenay Rockies is a huge draw for adventurers of all makes and models. Backcountry lodges nestled deep in the mountains include luxurious retreats offering helicopter
access, meals, guides and track-set trails. You can also ski tour to a rustic self-catered cabin, or embark on a wilderness lodge-to-lodge expedition.
NORDICThanks to numerous communities boasting networks of groomed trails, the graceful gliding of Nordic skiing is one of the region’s prized pastimes. Nipika Mountain Resort is a Nordic ski mecca with 50 km of groomed trails and 25 km
of dedicated fat bike trails. Whether you are gliding effortlessly or poling through the pines, rest assured – your free heel is a free heart.
SNOWSHOEINGIf you can walk, you can snowshoe! Indeed, not many sports are as easy to get into as snowshoeing. And not many regions are as perfect for pouncing through powder as the Kootenay Rockies. Trails are, literally, everywhere. No lift
lines, limited gear, fun for the whole family, inexpensive, great workout, go on your own or take a guided tour.
SNOWMOBILING‘A sledding paradise’ is how snowmobiling enthusiasts describe the region. While hot spots such as Revelstoke, Elkford, Golden and Panorama immediately come to mind, the options of where you can go are limitless. From exploring remote snow-
smothered valleys to blazing trails to a cabin-in-the-woods or high-alpine powder bowls, snowmobiling here is world-renowned.
FAT BIKINGThanks to fat bikes with big low-pressure tires that glide over packed snow trails, there’s no need to stop pedalling in winter. Awesome winter riding is yours for the taking in and around the communities. Mountain biking hot spots – like Fernie,
Golden and Nelson – offer plenty of trails for winter riders. Make no mistake, fat biking is here to stay.
SKATINGWhoever thinks skating isn’t an adventure hasn’t put on blades and cruised around the famous Lake Windermere Whiteway. This 34 km (21 mi) of maintained ice (you can also cross-country ski around it) is the longest skating path in the world.
Not surprisingly, it continues to grow in popularity every year. Almost all Kootenay Rockies communities, and many resorts, host skating rinks.
DOG SLEDDINGA journey through the wilderness aboard a husky powered dogsled is a breathtaking experience. From the energy and excitement of the dogs, to the smooth slide of the sled, there is nothing quite like it. Mountain communities such as Golden
and Revelstoke, offer a variety of tours (including mush-your-own-team options) through some of the prettiest terrain in the Kootenay Rockies.
