Back Country (back-coun.try) noun: skiing or riding in unmarked or unpa-trolled area, usually in pursuit of freshly fallen powder snow.

Slack Country or Side Country (sahyd coun.try) noun: skiing or snowboarding just outside a ski area boundary. Unlike back country skiing or snowboarding, where you hike in for access, slack or side country is accessed from the lifts of a ski resort.

The allure of backcountry skiing and riding has increased over the last few years and many resorts, as well as man-ufacturers, are filling this demand with innovative products and services.

For guests looking to explore the slack country accessible from Whistler Blackcomb there are a number of resources available from free avalanche awareness tours to guided backcoun-try skiing experiences with professional

coaches who will share techniques and tactics to hone your skiing, boost your safety knowledge, and heighten your awareness in big mountain terrain.

Regardless if just starting out or an ex-perienced slack country enthusiast, when travelling outside of the ski area boundary, into slack country terrain, guests are responsible for their own safety and the safety of the group. Every member of the group needs to be wearing a transceiver (and know how to use it), carry an avalanche probe, and a shovel. Once you’ve got the basics covered, the additional equipment list gets a little fun.

Technology and products are constantly evolving, and with an increasing interest in the sport, more companies are getting involved in the Alpine Touring game. Salomon has spent years doing research and development to create the newest binding in their fleet - the Guardian binding.

The new Salomon Guardian binding will change the way skiers approach and enjoy the backcountry. It is designed to provide the highest level of confidence, ease of use, and downhill performance for a heightened skiing experience.

The binding’s low profile chassis features a lower stand height for greater stability and enhanced terrain feedback, and the oversized platform enables maximum power transmission and re-sponsiveness. Salomon also wanted to develop a binding that would give a great experience in the mountains by making transitions between hike and ski mode as convenient as possible. The binding features the Hike & Ride Switch which allows skiers to keep their skis on while switching between hiking and riding modes by using their ski poles to make adjustments.

The Guardian binding provides the power, precision, and on-snow feel of a high-performance free-ride binding, with the benefits of a convenient hiking system. The Salomon Guardian will set the standard for the ultimate backcoun-try skiing experience. Above all, the new binding maximizes skiing performance and adds new meaning to enjoying skiing when venturing off the beaten path.

For more information about safely preparing to venture into slack country areas from Whistler Blackcomb check out www.whistlerblackcomb.com/safety.

With endless snow covered peaks in sight, anticipation builds as the helicop-ter slowly descends, landing in one of the 16 skiable zones of Whistler Heli-Skiing. Maybe it is Whistler Heli-Skiing’s huge glaciers of powder or their untouched gladed runs beneath you; either way a wave of excitement takes over. You carve your first powder turns and all you hear is the light fluffy snow bounc-ing off your jacket and goggles as your skis disappear deep into the white pow-der below, rising only as you start your next turn. After a couple thousand feet of carving untouched powder you arrive back at your own personal lift, brush off the snow, un-clip, and board to do it all over again. Deep powder comes in abundance at Whistler Heli-Skiing with access to hun-dreds of runs and over 430,000 acres of terrain. The right gear is paramount to make the most of your day and Whistler Heli-Skiing has you covered with the lat-est and greatest powder-specific gear from Salomon, Rossignol and Burton. Whistler Heli-Skiing’s season runs from Dec 1, 2012 through to April 21, 2013.www.whistlerheliskiing.com

Bogner is sold in more than 30 countries with diverse product offerings in Bogner Sport (ski, tennis and golf) and ready to wear sporty casual and city fashion. The company was estab-lished by Willy Bogner Jr.’s parents, Willy and Maria in Bavaria in 1932. Willy Bogner Sr. was one of Europe’s finest Nordic skiers and competed in the World Championships as well as the 1936 Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. These Olympics marked the beginning of Bogner’s partnership with the German National team which has sported silver “B” zippers for the last 17 winter Olym-pic Games. The company which started as an importer of Nordic skis, sweaters and ski accessories from Norway took

a more fashion forward direction when Willy’s wife Maria got involved in the design process. Maria is attributed with developing the iconic stretch ski pant and stars of the 50’s like Marilyn Mon-roe, Ingrid Bergman and Jane Mansfield wore Bogner stretch pants. Sleek and sexy ski wear was a new phenomenon

He worked on four James Bond films collaborating as camera man and unit director writing memorable ski sequences such as the famous skiing and motorcycle chase scene on a bobsled course in “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”, giving ex-treme skiing a global audience in 1969. Sônia Bogner, a Brazilian model Willy Jr. met while filming is also an integral part of the company with her own women’s collection, Sônia. Over 400 German athletes and officials sported Bogner fashions for the Opening Ceremony of the 30th Olympiad in London this past summer.Bogner ski wear is known for its attention to detail and exquisite finishings.
