Summer in the CitySummer is upon us and thoughtsnaturally turn to alfresco drinking incountry pub gardens. It sometimesworth considering whats on ourdoorstep, however, and Derby Drinkertasked Paul Gibson to look atopportunities for an outdoor pint ortwo in Derby.

The construction of the Silk Mill, powered by the river Derwent, in 1718,ensured that Derby was in the vanguardof the Industrial Revolution. Silk wormswere turned into high quality thread forfashion items that had amazing designsand colours. The Lombe brothersprovided cottages for mill workers onnearby Full Street, and one of these waslater licensed to become the original OldSilk Mill pub. The cottages weredemolished in 1924 and the present daypub was erected four years laterretaining the Old prefix. The eyecatching gable end mural depicts the1833 lock out of silk mill workers whichwas a notable, early test of power for thenew trades unions.

A couple of years ago, licensee TerryHolmes, a larger than life character, retired, and his successor Martin Roperintroduced a great culinary offering andadded a south facing terrace in themurals shadow. This is an ideal placefrom which to watch the world go by,and eight real ales, some of whichchange, give the discerning drinkerplenty of scope.

Across the road, Derbys oldest and mostpicturesque inn, the timber framed OldeDolphin boasts a pleasant patio which isalways popular in summer especiallywhen their July (15th to 18th) beerfestival is in full swing. The multi roomedinterior merits CAMRA NationalInventory listing with Greene KingAbbot, Draught Bass and Taylor Landlordbeing just three of several real ales ontap.

Just around the corner, the Flowerpoton King Street, could justifiably claim tobe Derbys most innovative licensedpremises. This multi-facetted pub hasbeen free of brewery tie since 1993 andoffers an ever changing choice bolsteredby the on-site Frontier brewery. Majoringon live music, theres a full roster ofelectronic and acoustic bands regularlyperforming in the rear concert room. And theres even a stage under thepergola in the courtyard garden.

Ghurkha curry evenings on Tuesdaysand good en-suite accommodation havefurther enhanced the Pots reputation.

The Furnace on Duke Street needs nointroduction having won Derby CAMRAPub of the Year in 2014 and beingpipped to the post by the Alexandra thistime round. Owner, Pedro Menon, andbrewer, Richard Swanwick (ex-BlackHole), have cleverly tapped into theCAMRA psyche by offering Shiny alesbrewed on the premises and some rareguest beers. From the tranquillity of therear patio the twin towers of All Saintsand St Marys may be viewed. Its goodto see this ex-Kimberley house doing sowell.

Out on Ashbourne Road is an oasis ofcalm in the shape of the Georgian HouseHotel which is an impressive, porticoed,Regency edifice. Integral to the hotel isMr Grundys, where to the rear is a largearea laid to lawn, and decking withseating. A most attractive weepingwillow affords a little shade, and lookingout over the entire garden is a big,Victorian style conservatory. Residential, with food served all day, Grundysinteresting interior features an old redtelephone kiosk. Andy Spencer has beenmanager here since the last century andon the bar, guest beers rub shoulderswith Mr Grundys ales brewed on site ingleaming stainless steel vessels made inDerby. Increased demand has beensatisfied by acquiring Burtons Black Holebrewery.

On Abbey Street, outside of the new(ish)ring road, sits the Olde Spa Inn with itstwin gabled frontage set back from theroad. Dr William Chaunceys spa complexwas built in 1733 when it was hoped tomatch Buxtons popularity as a healthresort. The anticipated prosperity didntmaterialize, however, and in 1832 an onlicence was granted for public houseusage. More recently, in 1985, arefurbishment merited a nationalarchitectural award from CAMRA; as youenter, the area to the right is particularlyworthy of attention. Hook Norton Lion,Castle Rock Harvest Pale, Bass andPedigree all attract 20p a pint discountfor CAMRA members and, of course, thechoice may vary. A pleasant grassed areato the front is enhanced by a functioningwater feature, and various food offers, especially the Sunday carvery, enticecustom.

There arent many pubs left like the midterrace Rowditch Inn at the junction ofUttoxeter Old and New Roads. This is anauthentic, wet sales only communitypub that has raised considerable sumsfor charity, especially the RainbowsHospice. Run by Steve and Jan Birkinsince 1997, Steve likes to cellar his beersfor three weeks giving ample time forthe important secondary fermentationprocess. Pedigree is permanent, guestscome and go, but try the home brewedSt Stephens Ale, a characterful littlenumber that belies its modest strength. If Derby has a secret pub garden, thenits probably here down the steps at theback, and this little known delight, awash with colour, is not to be missed.Note, though, that the Rowditch opensat 7pm and 12 2 on Saturday andSunday lunchtimes only.

Alan Kilkenny has wrought a remarkabletransformation at the Bell and Castle,Burton Road. Not too long ago theformer Bass pub stood forlorn andunloved, seemingly destined to neveropen again. Today, the place isunrecognizable with a stylish, modernistinterior of different areas and a separate, stone flagged bar room at one end.Outside, the meticulously landscapedgarden is a real haven and its hard tobelieve that busy Burton Road is justyards away as its inaudible. Also, theresa delightful, walled patio and childrensplay facilities are evident. From thegarden, the upper floor rear windowsgive a clue to the buildings originalusage stockingers workshops abovethe workers cottages. The beer rangeconstantly changes but when I called,Salopian, Nethergate, Stancil and thelocal Falstaff brewery vied for attention.Prices are very reasonable with 10p apint CAMRA discount offered.

Not too far away, off Normanton Road, lies the citys best preserved Victorianpub, the atmospheric Falstaff at the topof Silverhill Road. The three roomedinterior merits inclusion in CAMRAsgreat new book Real Heritage Pubs ofthe Midlands, and the lounge is averitable shrine to the nearby Offilersbrewery which closed in 1966. Fourbeers brewed on site by licensee JimHallows ensure beer buffs patronageand, outside, the focal point of thehidden courtyard is an art sculpturemade of scrap metal in memory of abiker who has sadly passed away.

Derbys two Derby Brewing Companypubs, The Tap, Derwent Street, and theGreyhound (pictured), Friar Gate, bothhave roof terraces for fair weatherdrinking. The latter also benefits from adedicated roof level bar which opens atbusy periods to cater for alfrescodrinkers. Both pubs were rescued fromclosure a few years back by the Harrisfather and son team, and DBC beers withguests are augmented by a culinaryoffering which make for brisk business.

In 2012 the future of the Smithfield onMeadow Road looked bleak when theHeadless Brewing Company chose todispose of it, but in stepped Derby basedWestminster Building Company whosethorough renovation gave the bowfronted building a new lease of life. Oncea short hop over a bridge from the cattlemarket which gave the pub its originalname, the Smithy now stands insplendid isolation with the ring roadtraffics din drowned out by thecascading water from the weir upstream. The riverside terrace is the perfect placeto enjoy a leisurely pint and to catch aglimpse of birds such as cormorants andkingfishers. Mine hosts, Scott and ClaireMuldoon, serve a quartet of Bass, WhimArbor Light, Oakham Bishops Farewelland Smithy Ale brewed by DerbyBrewing Company. In addition, a coupleof changing guests often include a darkbrew which was the excellent ChurchEnd Gravediggers mild when I called in.CAMRA discount is offered andwholesome food including a Sundaycarvery is very reasonably priced. A beerfestival is being held here between the30th July and the 3rd August.

The most recent addition to the summerdrinking scene is the New ZealandArms on the corner of PeelStreet/Langley Street off AshbourneRoad. Following a three year legalwrangle regarding access, a walled, elongated patio thats picked out by fairylights at night is now open. The NZA isDancing Ducks brewery tap and theirportfolio includes the infinitely quaffableDark Drake which I consider to be thebest of all the ales brewed in the city.

Derbys reputation as a cornucopia ofreal ale is unmatched, and there cant bemany cities of comparable size that havesuch good garden facilities in which toenjoy it. Cheers!

Derby Drinker popped alongto sample the openings ofthe 3 new ones.Wentwell Brewery were already well knownfor their two Micropubs in Derby, the LittleChester Ale House & the Last Post but theplight of the Derby Inn struck a chord withGeorge & Walter from the Brewery and aftera few visits they fell in love with the place. Its a little bit bigger than the Microstheyve been used to with 3 Rooms but nottoo big to lose that intimacy of a Micro. Leeand Rachael Betts are the new Managers ofthe pub who have come straight from theAlex in Derby so are used to serving topquality ales and the pub will be run alongsimilar lines to the Derby Micropubs. Agood turnout on opening night saw awarm welcome from the team and somegreat beers on the bar including Wentwellsamazing Russian Imperial Stout. The longserving ex-landlord of the pub also poppedin for a pint and a chat. The pub is not toofar from the Football ground and is ideallysituated on the X38 and Villager bus routesfrom Derby with a stop almost outside andthe Villager bus route retuning. Theopening hours are set to be 5-11 (Mon-Tue)and 12-11 (Wed-Sun).

The Dog on Lichfield Street was the nextto open and marks Black Country Alessecond venture outside their traditionalarea. Famous of course for Birminghamspremier Real Ale pub, the Wellington andits flagship Black Country Arms in Walsall, the company has expanded rapidly to 25pubs with outlets in Cannock, Dudley,Leicester and Wolverhampton to name afew. Its new venture is the Dog a traditionaltown centre Burton local and the companyhas done a great job restoring the pubwith three open fire places and black-and-white photos of old Burton dotted aroundthe walls. An array of 11 handpumps greetsyou as you walk in offering not only alesfrom the Black Country range but alsoguests as well and real ciders and perries.Snacks are available in the form of cobsand flavoured Scotch eggs and the pub willbe open between midday and 11pm sevendays a week. Its also conveniently situatedclose to the X38 and Villager bus stops onthe High St so couldnt be easier to reach.

The Crossing on the High Street is the newventure of Martin & Denise Roper who runboth the Exeter Arms and Old Silk Mill inDerby and the style of the pub is very muchin keeping with them both. The Name ofthe pub refers to the railway crossing whichstood next door and is immortalized in anLS Lowry painting and the logo is a pictureof the old signal box. The pub is done out ina vintage, eclectic style with variouspaintings, artifacts and ornamentsadorning the inside and its former open-plan pub interior has been broken up withsome nice intimate areas including a lovelyraised snug called appropriately the

Waiting Room. Outside there is a largepatio and decked rear garden which shouldprove a haven in warmer weather. 8 caskales are on offer and as with their otherpubs a varied and interesting food menu isavailable. The pub opens at noon most days(11am Sat) and runs right through to 11 or12 and the X38 & Villager buses run rightalong the High St.

These three new openings are not the endof the revolution though as further alongthe High Street a new Micropub is plannedcalled the Fuggle & Nugget run by JaneLaws & Shaun Rose who got the idea after

Burton upon Trent Burton on Trent has always been known as Britain Brewing Capital with the likes of Bass, Ind Coope & Marstons all being part ofits heritage. However the dominance of these big brewers in the town hasnt always meant that the greatest choice ofdifferent beers was available. Then 33 years ago Burton Bridge Brewery was founded and a few different beers where seenaround followed by Tower, Old Cottage, Black Hole, etc with one or two new pubs being set-up by these Microbreweries alongthe way. Apart from that though nothing much has happened and the majority of pubs are still owned and run by the BigBreweries and Pub Cos but this seems set to change as several new ventures have opened or are about to open within the Town.

First off the blocks was the Micropub on Borough Road, the Borough Arms and this has now been joined by the Derby Inn(Wentwell Brewery), The Dog (Black Country Ales) and The Crossing with two further ones in the pipeline.

visiting the Cask & Pottle in Tutbury andthey are hoping to open it later in thesummer.

Also planned for a late August opening isthe Middle Earth Tavern near the MidlandGrain Warehouse and close to the railwaystation, the first venture of Derby basedMiddle Earth Brewery run by Carla & SteveTwells. The premises licence has beengranted and by the time you read this theyshould have the keys and be making the

necessary arrangements to convert theempty building into a Micropub.

All this of course will make Burton on Trenta cracking Real Ale destination and withthe likes of the Alfred, Burton Bridge Inn,Devonshire Arms (Burton Bridge Brewerypubs), the iconic Coopers Tavern (JoulesBrewery) and the Old Cottage Tavern to goat, should make for a fantastic day out.

    Real Ciders & Perries

The weather has finallywarmed up which meansthat the cider made lastautumn is fully fermentedand perfect for drinking. Bythis time all the fermentablesugars have been devouredby the yeast so ciders naturalstate is dry to bone dry. Thismay be how you like to drinkyour cider, and the DerbySummer Festival cider bar willhave a few ciders which aretotally unsweetened.

For most of us, myselfincluded, very dry cider is notparticularly palatable, so it hasto be sweetened. Artificialsweeteners do the job, but forme if you use any more than atiny amount you can taste theartificiality. So sweetening withsugar is the answer; I find thata small amount of sugaractually brings out the flavourof the cider. Of course lots ofcustomers like really sweetcider and you can get there byadding enough sugar, but thisresults in a drink which isnoticeably syrupy. A furtherproblem with sugar,

particularly in warm weather,is that it revives thefermentation in the cask; but ifyou can get it just right it addsa pleasing slight fizz to thecider. We are all different in ourtastes; when planning a ciderbar I try to cater for as wide arange as possible.

Its all very well reading aboutcider, but it needs to be drunk, and what better place to dothat than Derby CAMRAsSummer Festival, to be heldfrom 8th to 12th July in amarquee outside to AssemblyRooms. The cider / perrycorner will be in the sameplace as last year, at theopposite end of the marqueefrom the stage. There will besome local ciders, particularlyOakfield Farm Taste of theOrchard from StanleyCommon, Scropton DorisStokes and, of course, ThreeCats from Morley. I like toencourage very small scalelocal cider makers, particularlynew start-ups and we shouldhave Slackjaw from Kilburnand as yet un-named cider

from Eastwood. Im happy toput on any new, local ciderprovided it tastes at least halfdecent and is supplied in a 40pint tub; so theres a challengefor you budding cider makers!

Supporting local cider is fine, but most of the cider drunktoday still comes from thetraditional cider makingregions of the West Country;Somerset, Devon,Herefordshire and increasinglyWales. From Somerset we willhave Hecks Port Wine ofGlastonbury Cider andBlakeney Red Perry, both firmfestival favourites. Also fromSomerset we will haveSheppys, Rich and WestcroftJanets Jungle Juice, CAMRAscurrent joint Champion Cider. Also present will be CAMRAsother joint winner, OrgasmicWhite Jersey fromHerefordshire. Herefordshire isthe traditional home of perryand over half our perries comefrom there, Newton CourtWinnals Longdon, CelticMarches Crackling Rosie andSnailsbank to name a few. The

bar would not be completewithout a contingent fromWales; from Gwynt y Ddraigwe have CAMRAs currentchampion perry, Two Trees, also Springfield Red Dragoncider and Raglan Cider MillSnowy Owl perry.

You may know that at CAMRAsrecent AGM at Nottingham amotion was passed toreclassify fruit ciders as Realprovided actual fruit was usedin their making, thus allowingthese ciders to be sold atCAMRA festivals. This is thefirst festival in Derby since thismotion, which was proposedby Kent Branches, was passed, and we will have some ofthese ciders for you to try. Sofrom Kent we will have DoubleVision Cherry Cider and fromDevon Green Valley StrawberryCider. Your feedback on thesubject of fruit and otherflavourings in cider will beappreciated; if you like themwe may well have more nexttime. See you at the festival.

The Abbey, at Darley Abbey. Starting point.

To look at the building you could be forgivento think this is one of the oldest pubs in thecountry. However it was only around 1980when ale was first served here. The buildingitself dates from about 1140 and was part ofone of the largest Augustinian priories inBritain. In the early 16th century, along withmany other religious buildings, the priory wasdestroyed on Henry V111's orders but thebuilding now known as The Abbey somehowescaped destruction .

The Abbey is a pub with two bars, oneupstairs, and the other, known as theUndercroft, opens directly onto the street. Iparticularly love the Undercroft in the winterwith it's welcoming open fire giving it a realcountry feeling.

The Abbey hasn't always had a goodreputation for quality beer but in December2013 it won the Derby Telegraph's pub andbeer of the year. And in my opinion, evenwith another new landlord, it cannot befaulted. On a Christmas Eve amble with a fewfriends, it was awarded it the best pint of theday award. The only real ale the Abbey servescurrently is Sam Smith's Old Brewery Bitter. At 1.80 a pint it is probably the cheapestdraught ale you'll find anywhere although Iwish Sam Smith's would charge a bit more forthe beer and upgrade the seating in the pub,as stools and benches are not thatcomfortable..

When you are ready stroll to the next pub,the Old Chester Ale House, about a 20 minutewalk.

Turn left out of the Abbey pub, cross the roadand walk towards the toll bridge don'tworry it's free for pedestrians. On your rightyou'll see the riverside garden. Enter this toread the information boards. One tells aboutthe newly created fish ladder paid for byEuropean money. The ladder allows salmonamongst other fish, to swim over the weir tobreed in the smaller tributaries of theDerwentr. The other information boards tellyou about the 18th century cotton millindustries, the buildings of which dominatethe area. These building currently housemany small businesses, which includeDarley's, an award winning restaurant and theDerventio Brewery.

Continue to cross the bridge and walkthrough the mill buildings which onceemployed the sober residents of Darley

Abbey as the village was totally tea total atthe time the mills were operating. Turn rightat Folly Road noting the Derby Rugby Club onyour left. As you approach the footbridgewhich leads into Darley Playing Fields, you'llnote the large rock that holds a notice boardtelling why Folly road is so called. The housesto your right have an interesting history too -they one use to be pictured on postersadvertising Shell Petrol and at one timewould have been a tourist attraction for earlymotorists. Again all is revealed on the noticeboard.

Continue through Darley fields by it centralpath, exiting onto City Road. You are now inRoman Derby and will soon come acrossanother notice board telling you about theRoman Settlement, once known as Derventio.Turn left onto Chester Green Road and followthis to its far corner where you'l be ready foryou next pint or two.

    The Little Chester Ale House.

In recent years this has been converted froma dry cleaning shop. In 2014 it was runner upin Derby Camra's pub of the year. It is in myopinion, it is probably the friendliest of allpubs I've been ever in, every one seemshappy to chat. The ales here are mostly homebrewed Wentworth Ales and well worthtrying, especially the mild and ginger infusedales. The ale here is cheap too, about 2.60isha pint. If you intend to return get your AleCard collect 10 stamps for a free pint.

The next pub we'll visit is The Furnace - a 10minute walk.

Leaving the Ale House retrace your stepsback to City Road and walk straigh ahead, through what was once Bliss's car park tocross Handyside Bridge and turn left downthe steps just after. Pause here to read yetanother information board telling the historyof this bridge and of Andrew Handyside whoalso built the better known Friargate Bridge. It now seems impossible that this bridgecarried the Great Northern Railway for 85years until Beeching closed down half therailways in Britain in the 1960's.

With the river on your left head toward townand when the path splits , follow the right-hand path and within a couple of minutesyou'll soon be ordering your next pint.

    The Furnace,

The Furnace is Derby Camra's pub of the year2014. This is another pub with its ownbrewery but also serves a wide range of realale from other brewers. Don't forget to useyour Camra card to get a 20p discount onyour pint, bringing the price of some of theales down to 2.40 a pint. There are someinteresting photos of old Derby on the walls well worth a look. In the summer the gardenout back holds beer festivals and musicevents.

And so onto the last pub on this mini pubcrawl, The Five lamps, a few minutes walkaway.

Return to Handyside Bridge and once up thesteps turn left and continue along the fencetill you meet the North Parade. Look right

here and you'll see Darley Grove, an ancientroad (now walkway) that'll take you back toDarley Abbey. For a millennium or more thiswas the major route going north from Derby.Turn left onto North Parade and right ontoNorth Street. At this road's end you see theFive Lamps across the road.

    The Five Lamps

This was previously known as the St Helen'sInn, as it was built within the pleasuregrounds of St Helens House which still standsjust a little way towards the City Centre. StHelens House was once the home of DerbySchool and previous to that the home of thefamous mill owning Strutt family.

The Five Lamps was Derby Camra's pub of theyear 2012. Belonging to Everard's, it is a verypopular pub selling a wide range of real ales.Again use your CAMRA card for a discount. The beer here is a bit more expensive thanthe previous three pubs but all in all youshould be able to get four pints (one in eachpub) for a tenner. A bargain night out.

If you are a dog owner you'll love this walkas all four pubs welcome them.

To get to the start of the walk, either use ataxi which'll cost about a fiver from the citycentre or in the summer walk across DarleyPark following the river path (30 minutes) butis often too muddy and wet in the winter. Ofcourse you could follow the afore mentionedDarley Grove.

The County and Station Matlock BathMAD T-POTS Winner 2015

    24

It was only six months agothat Lee and Sally Jackson, with the backing of PedroMenon of Shiny Brewing Co,opened the doors of theCounty and Station under itsnew guise of Shinys secondoutlet. In those six monthsthe County and Station hascome from absolutelynowhere to become winnersof the first Matlock CAMRATown Pub of the Seasonaward. If you havent beenthere before, the County andStation is at the top end ofNorth Parade in Matlock Bath, just opposite the railwaystation. (The clues in thename really).

It used to be two pubs TheCounty (to where, in MatlockBaths Victorian heyday, thegentry would adjourn, andimbibe in a tincture or twowhilst anticipating the arrivalof Mr Stephensonsfascinating new mode oftransportation), and TheStation (where the hoi-polloiwere summarily deposited towait for the train. Both rathersmall areas, they wereeventually knocked togetherto form one establishment. The giveaway that they wereoriginally two pubs is the factthere are two entrances. TheCounty having a nice largeand ornate vestibule on thecorner of the building, whilethe Stations ingress is thecolonnaded entrance halfwayalong the terrace. This is further explained inamazingly intricate graphicaccompanying thisdocument.

In the six months sinceopening the pub has served314 different reals ales (andcounting), hosted two beer

festivals (with more to come),and has become a renowneddestination for live musiclovers, with bands playingevery other Friday andSunday. At last count, therewere eight handpumpsdispensing the adventurousrange of ales, plus a wideselection of real ciders andcraft beers always available.Food has also made an

appearance recently with newmenus including dailyspecials, while outsiderestaurant hours, ahomemade scotch egg menuis available all day every day.

So who are the team? Welllets round up the usualsuspects, to paraphraseClaude Rains. Lees thelicensee, 6 foot tall and

slightly resembling AlexLallana, the Liverpool Englandmidfielder (Its the beard). Ihavent seen Lee play football, but Im guessing hed be amidfield captain type role.Sally (58)* shares the role(licensee, not Englandmidfielder) amongst manyothers roles, and both used torun the Abbey pub in DarleyAbbey before joining Pedro inthis new venture up the A6.

Deeley (56) and Kylie (about57) grace the bar area.Musical ability aboundsamong the Countys staff,Deeley is a part time fiddleplayer, and Andy (5 10) whoputs in a few shifts is knownto chop the axe, while Sam(511) is renowned for hisskills on the didgeridoo, andSarai (5 9 - maybe) is a jazzsinger. • To ACV or not to ACV that is the

    question.

Picture the scene Im sitting in a pub, chatting to some friends. Nothing earthshattering just catching up, taking time toconsider what to fill our glasses with nextwhile putting the world to rights. This is inessence what pubs are best at enablingCommunities to come together and talk. This time honoured scenario is replicatedwherever there is a public house, club orlicensed premises. Someone asks what we think about ACVs orAssets of Community Value which are new wayof providing some protection to pubs.Immediately there are protests that no onewould dare to touch, buy, demolish or alter theuse of our best beloved local and the licenseeisnt up for selling so there is nothing to discuss. It couldnt possibly happen to our local! One of the groups sits thin lipped sippingtheir pint until all the fuss has died down, then says Remember the Flying Horse inNottingham! The majority of the group looksvague and puzzled. It turns out The FlyingHorse was built in 1483 it was one of the

oldest pubs in Nottingham, but in 1989 it wasconverted into a shop. No massive change ofuse application, no high level protests withcasks or coffins. Its Flying Horse Walk nowoffering the discerning shopper anunrivalled boutique shopping experience. We all got the point really quickly; shakingour heads stunned this could happen. When gems like the Flying Horse can bepicked off right before our eyes, weve got tocherish what we currently have. Someoneonce told me there was no such thing as abad pub, you can have a poor manager or apoor cellerperson but its not the pubs fault.Every pub has the potential to besuccessfully. Dear Reader you will have at least 1 pubwhich holds a cherished place in your life asyour Local. This is the beating heart of yourown community and so I must urge you totake a moment and protect it. You cansubmit a form to the Council asking for yourlocal to be listed as an Asset of CommunityValue. If you Google the Councils website

then search for ACV the process shouldbecome clear. Once in place pubs that are listed as Assets ofCommunity Value (England only) requireplanning permission to be demolished orchanged to any other use for a 5 year period.ACVs also provide a small window ofopportunity for the Community to put in a bidto buy the pub, should it ever come up for sale. But it starts here and now with you and yourfriends in the pub. There is recent news thatyet another large pub chain is activelylooking to off load 800+ pubs. We are losingmore of our best loved pubs now! We can nolonger considered pub campaigning to besomeone elses action like our friendpointed out the other night Remember theFlying Horse!! Protect your local. Take actionand apply for an ACV for your Local now.If you need any help or advice re puttingtogether an ACV application please contactme via email: [email protected] may your Local thrive!

The Nags Head Remembers its Pullman Car by Launching a Special Charity Beer

The Nags Head on Uttoxeter Road,Mickleover, Derby has been workingtirelessly with Nottingham Brewery and the5BEL Trust to launch an ale named Car No.85as reference to the Pullman Car that used tograce the pubs beer garden from 1972 until itwas removed for restoration in 1993.

Fondly remembered by the locals the PullmanCar is currently being restored to its formerglory by the Trust along with 4 other carriagesto bring back The Brighton Belle. The teamat the Nags Head wanted to do something to

mark the occasion and celebrate the pubshistory and so the idea of a special ale cameabout. The beer is going well in the pub and10p from every pint sold will help support the5BEL in their restoration work. GeneralManager, Benjamin Shaw said: We haveheard such great stories from our locals whoremember the car, from their first meal as amarried couple, to last meal together as afamily. The car meant a lot to so many people,we just wanted to remember those times.Weve had great feedback from our real aledrinkers, and we know our efforts are really

appreciated. We hope that the donations willmake a big difference to the 5BEL restorationproject and soon see Car No. 85 in its formerglory on the Brighton Belle. The Nags hasrecently increased the number of handpullsin the pub from 6 to 10 due to the popularityof the ales and offers a 10% off a pintdiscount for CAMRA members. It operates asa Flaming Grill pub and food is available inthat vain. Standing on the crossroads the pubis easily reached on any Mickleover bus andopens 11am (12 Sun) to 11pm every day.

Sometimes youll see people inthe Festival before it opens orhear about a beer which has wonsome CAMRA Award and youwonder what its all about. Thosepeople have been carefully selectedto form a panel of judges, calledtogether to rate one of CAMRAs 11style categories.....and it all startsback at the Brewery itself.

Each Brewery in the UK has aBrewery Liaison Officer (BLO)appointed by either the local CAMRABranch or a Branch which is close by.Its the BLO, through quarterlyreports, who keeps the Campaigninformed and who works with theBrewery to describe and categorisethe beer styles. Local tasting panelsassist with this too. These reports, descriptions and categories arerecorded in CAMRAs BreweryInformation System which in turndrives the Good Beer Guide.

For 2 months each year all 170,000+CAMRA Members are urged to votefor up to 5 beers across each stylecategory from their region. This isthe
