The accreditation process also increases citizen and employee confidence in the agency by establishing goals, objectives, policies, practices and a mission statement. As the agency’s Accreditation Manager, Sgt. Zandral Washington is responsible for ensuring the policies and procedures are continually reviewed so they are up-to-date on procedural changes and changes in the law. Thus, the accreditation process allows for an ongoing self-assessment component to ensure that the agency “practices what it preaches.” CALEA has established standards designed to increase law-enforcement capabilities, prevent and control crime and reduce liability. The effectiveness and efficiency in the delivery of these services is addressed in the standards. The UAB Police Department strives to promote and maintain a safe campus. Ensuring the safety of the community requires a well-trained, dedicated membership that is sensitive to the diverse needs of a university. Chief Purcell says UAB aspires to provide resources to prevent crime, develop community partnerships and provide services to the university that promote campus safety.

The UAB Police Department is a nationally recognized, accredited agency under the auspices of the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). CALEA was formed for two reasons — to develop a set of

law-enforcement standards and to establish and administer an accreditation process through which law enforcement agencies could demonstrate voluntarily that they must meet professionally recognized criteria for excellence in management and service delivery.

The UAB Police Department is very proud of its personnel who are fully vested, committed and dedicated to maintaining law-enforcement excellence. It was initially accredited in May 1995 and is one of the 47 university police departments with a CALEA award.

In January, the UAB Police Department was selected by CALEA to be the first university and one of 15 law-enforcement agencies to participate in CALEA’s BETA Reaccreditation Model; a new onsite process called the “Gold Standard Award” was adopted during the July conference in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Gold Standard Award process involved a rigorous examination and review of the agency’s personnel and policies related to the 464 CALEA standards. The UAB Police Department received its Gold Standard Award at the Cincinnati conference. The UAB Police Department also was awarded another re-accreditation under the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA) in October.

UAB Chief Anthony Purcell says that accreditation standards are designed for law-enforcement agencies to build policies and procedures that meet specific criteria set forth by national and state commissions. Our department is a professional organization that strives to attract, process and hire only the most qualified personnel, and it has adopted accreditation standards to ensure that our service continues to excel.

Chief Anthony Purcell Opportunity Theft Is Real

Opportunity Theft is a theft of property due to its ease of availability to be stolen.

Safeguard all UAB Hospital property and equipment.

Don’t leave easily removable and concealed property unattended or unsecured.

Lock your door if you must leave your office area. You are the first “Line of Defense.”

Call the UABPD when you observe suspicious activity at 934-4434

Captain Roderick W. Wilkins

For more information on these and other safety tips call the UAB Police at 205-934-4344 or visit www.uab.edu/police.

Have A Joyous and Safe Holiday Season and A Happy New Year!

For Any Emergencies Call 205-934-3535 or 911

During the holidays, the potential for thefts and robberies increase. More people are out and carrying more money than during other times of the year. Keep in mind:

Job well done! Special thanks to the UAB Police Department and its officers on the success of the Pedestrians Safety Campaign.

All of your work is greatly appreciated.

— Kudos!

Carry your valuables sensibly. Do not keep cash in your wallet. Instead, keep it in an inside pocket and only carry the credit cards you'll need.

Carry a cell phone with you. If someone makes you suspicious or uncomfortable, notify security or call the police.

Whenever possible, park and walk in well-lit areas. Be aware of your surroundings, especially the people around you.

Do not keep a wallet, credit cards or cash in a backpack. If you are in a crowd, consider carrying the backpack in front of you. Pickpockets can quickly and easily remove items from a backpack without being noticed by the owner.
