Then and nowCalifornia University of Pennsylvania is steeped in history. Founded in 1852 as California Academy, it hastransformed itself many times —first as a normal school, then as a state teachers college, and again as a state college beforebecoming a University in 1983.The campus has grown as well,from a handful of buildings in
Cal U’s early days to about 40 that stand today. While the statelyolder structures reflect the University’s roots, the many new classroom buildings and residence halls demonstrate the University’s commitment to technology and innovation.
Today, Cal U is a proud memberof the Pennsylvania State Systemof Higher Education, offeringmore than 120 undergraduatecourses of study and 35 graduateprograms, as well as associatedegrees and certificate programs. The University hasbeen nationally recognized foracademic excellence, andfor its emphasis on building character as well as careers.
Located just 35 miles from downtown Pittsburgh, Cal U providesa wealth of opportunities for students. Outdoor enthusiastscan enjoy hiking, biking, rafting, skiing and horseback ridingnearby. Don’t miss the beautiful Founders’ Garden adjacent to Old Main. Make a wish at the sparkling fountain in Old MainPark. Marvel at the exquisite stained-glass windows of
Pennsylvania wildflowers in the Grand Hall of Old Main, as well as the othermagnificent works of art located throughout campus. Be sure to check out RoadmanPark and Adamson Stadium,home to the California Vulcans, or visit the SAI farm. Ifyou are looking for someexcitement, head to the NataliStudent Center. There’s alwaysplenty going on. And check outSteele Hall — a first-ratevenue for both local andregional performances.

Some days are so busy, you don’t get to see your friends very much. So you
connect at the Quad and make plans for a get-together, play Frisbee or even
