Greetings, we had an informative program last month by FL Division Commander Jim Davis on Florida secession. This was part one of his program which gave a

day by day account of what was happening during the early stages of secession. I’m sure everyone looks forward to his next program as much as I do and thank you Jim for taking the time and effort to travel from St. Augustine to provide camp 1387 with another fine program on southern history. It is my pleasure to announce that compatriot Don Young has been elected Florida Division Commander for the 2017/18 term. What an honor it is to have one of our camp members serve at the head of the division. Be sure to give Don a heartfelt congratulation for accepting this awesome duty. This was my first time participating in a Division Reunion and it was great. I met men and women from all over the state and saw how Florida conducts our business. Everyone should attend these events. If you ordered camp shirt(s) please remember to bring in cash or check to the meeting and pick up your merchandise. Rod is the contact for camp shirts and writing pens with the SCV info. We will be participating in the Downtown Melbourne, Independence Day Parade 7-4-2016 Monday. We will stage the float in the parking lot West of US1 & just South of E. New Haven Ave. under the oak tree in the North East corner of the lot. I will have the float there between 8:30 – 9 AM to decorate. We will fall in after decorating and the parade begins at 10 AM. This is the longer parade route for downtown Melbourne and runs east to west and on to the Liberty Bell Museum. Bring your friends and family, ride the float, and help celebrate Independence Day Southern Style. The attacks on our Southern heritage continue and we have our work cut out for us. Please continue to make your voice herd before it is too late. Get educated on the current events and take action. Let’s stop cultural cleansing before our country is too far gone. I want to thank everyone for your patronage & I look forward to seeing everyone at the next meeting. God Bless the South! Commander L.M. Substitutions – How Southerners Made Do

One of our all time favorite speakers Miss Lee will tell us how Southern civilians coped with the terrible war years and withstood the effects of the northern blockade. Southern households many of which were poor before the war even started had to figure out what to substitute for the manufactured goods, foods and medicines that were no longer available in “store bought” form. Every Southern patriot needs to understand the hardship this put the Southern populace through and Miss Lee has a long history of programs regarding the home front.

Charles Kelly Barrow Commander-in-Chief SCV Southern Baptist Convention Resolution The history of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) has been inextricably tied to the Confederacy and her heirs for over a century and a half. Great pulpit expositors, as well as seminary professors that left their mark in the area of Biblical thought and world view offered service to the Confederacy, as chaplains and men of arms, as well. Therefore, it was a profound disappointment and excruciatingly disheartening to hear the anti-Confederate Battle Flag resolution that was approved by SBC messengers meeting in St. Louis on June 14. The resolution offended on several levels -- first of all, simply put, it did not adequately deal with the Truth of the nature of the Flag, particularly disappointing as Christians should place a premium on the Truth. The 800,000 men that served the Confederacy held, and always will hold, full title to that banner -- it is a soldiers' flag and their political agenda was nothing more than defense of their home. Furthermore, as the Fifth Commandment compels us to "honor father and mother", those of us who enjoy Confederate ancestry are bound to tell the Truth of our ancestors fight and flag. Finally, the tone of the resolution has the effect of intimidating the consciences of Southern Baptists into holding a terribly negative opinion of Confederate symbols. All that said, the SBC is not a hierarchy; local congregations are in no way bound to the resolution. They may continue on as they have done, in some cases, for many years, in helping their community to retain its history and honoring the men that rebuilt their community after a tragic war and devastating reconstruction. Today, we call upon the great SBC congregations throughout the South to do just that, ignore this distraction and get on with the priorities of Gospel proclamation, building up of the fellowship of Faith and pursuing a witness of goodwill in the community. Untold numbers of these SBC churches, over the years, have cultivated great relationships with SCV camps by opening their facilities for regular meetings and special occasions, not to mention the cemeteries owned by SBC churches where the remains of legions of Confederate heroes lie -- these are sites for numerous memorial services. Of course, in addition to the historical ties of the Confederacy and SBC, thousands of SCV members are also members of SBC churches. In closing, we call on our camps to pursue” peace with all men" (Heb. 12:14) by cultivating good relationships with all organizations in their community, particularly houses of worship, be they SBC, other Christian denominations or Jewish Synagogues. ***************************************************************************

***************************************************************** Lawndale – Hiram Smith Williams House 1219 Rockledge Dr. Rockledge

Camp 1387 performed our first work day (Friday 10 June) at Lawndale intended for only grounds maintenance; our troops were Jim Meeks and Don Young. We worked from 9 am to 130 pm and piled about 4 yards of debris by the curb. This was only from picking up limbs, palm fronds etc. from the site and doing a detail cleaning of the narrow strip of land between the street and the front yard fence; we didn’t even edge. We clean a bit more in some areas each time we are on site and eventually the routine of mowing and edging will get shorter and easier – it hasn’t happen yet though.

We thought the local Yankees were coming when we heard a loud BANG as we were getting started. The yard cart donated by Larry Thornton had a blowout – no help there for that day, but we have new tires now and the cart will be a big help all around the site.

We will host another work day Saturday 25 June from 9 am till noon or shorter if y’all get too hot. There is running water and restroom facilities available. There are jobs inside the house as well where it is cooler and easier for those who can’t do the yard stuff. Yes, it is hot and hard work, but very rewarding. Y’all come!

*************************************************************************** Friends of Southern Heritage by Lunelle Siegel McCallister We all have been aghast at the eruption of desecration of our Monuments: seeing the spray painted images of the Lee Statue on Monument Avenue in Richmond, VA, and our own Confederate Soldier monument in Pensacola, and the images of Jefferson Davis being moved from his prominent place in Texas, and the protesters at Lee Circle in New Orleans. The Southern Poverty Law Center has identified numerous Confederate Veteran Observances throughout the country. Those that have not been targeted yet, will surely be so eventually (see more info below). I wanted to let you know that a group in Florida has developed a plan for Confederate Observance protection in Florida and is seeking to implement it beginning this summer. Save Southern Heritage – FL (www.sshfl.org) has developed a program for protection of our Confederate Veteran observances. There are three specific strategies are detailed below.

SSH thinks this summer is a good time for a couple of reasons:

1. Since Memorial Day, observers have noted an uptick in vandalism of All American Veterans Monuments. There were two recent incidents in Florida (Ocala, Gainesville), though the most prominent one was in Venice, CA, where a replica “Vietnam Veteran Memorial Wall” was vandalized, and virtually destroyed.

2. The 50th Observance of the Vietnam War beings this month. Vietnam Veterans know

first-hand how it feels to have served in what America viewed as an ‘unpopular war’. They adopted the mantra “Never again will one generation of veterans abandon another”. They realize that how yesterday’s veterans are treated today is signal to today’s veterans how they will be treated tomorrow.

Of course, we are cognizant that any day now the media will launch into the 1 year anniversary of the Charleston Massacre, so we are keeping our power dry but are making plans to launch these initiatives. You may have seen my recently published article “Who Will Be Our Monuments Men?” If not, you may appreciate the read. http://www.abbevilleinstitute.org/blog/who-will-be-our-monuments-men/ Maybe you will decide to become one? Unless you object by replying to this email by Tuesday, I will ask SSH to send you information about these initiatives so that you, too, can become one of Florida’s Monuments Men.

***************************************************************** Melbourne Memorial Day Parade We had over 24 members, ladies and guests for our Color Guard, float and Mech Cav. escort.

Some folks were first or 2nd timers in parades with us, it’s good to have newbies. We had Chaplain Tim Cobb leading on his scooter and then the Color Guard – who couldn’t keep up.

There are still a few of us around who throw candy (carefully) to kids! Great fun and we always get a warm welcome from the sidewalks.

Mississippi Confederate flag opponents take protest to Washington

In this photo taken June 23, 2015, the Mississippi state flag is unfurled against the front of the Governor's Mansion in Jackson, Miss. A new proposal seeks a statewide election on removing the Confederate battle emblem from the Mississippi flag. But it could be years before the issue gets on the ballot, and there's no guarantee voters would accept it.(AP Photo/Rogelio V. Solis)Rogelio V. Solis/AP File Photo

Protesters plan to gather outside the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday to say the Confederate battle emblem on the Mississippi flag is a vestige of slavery and Congress should erase it.

Among the scheduled speakers for the Flag Day rally is Aunjanue Ellis, an actress who lives in Pike County, Mississippi, where she grew up. One of the stars of the ABC series "Quantico" and the 2011 movie, "The Help," Ellis said the Mississippi flag is a national issue because Americans shouldn't spend tax dollars on a symbol tied to slavery and the Ku Klux Klan.

"This country presents itself as this beacon of hope and opportunity and equality and race-transcendence to the world," Ellis told The Associated Press last week. "We can't say that and, 'Well, with the exception of Mississippi.'"

U.S. House Republican leaders last week blocked Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi from trying to ban Confederate symbols from the House side of the Capitol. Thompson, the only black member of Mississippi's congressional delegation, responded that the House "will continue to sanction and glorify relics of bondage, bigotry and oppression."

Nearly 38 percent of Mississippi residents are black — the highest percentage of any state. It is the only state with a flag that still includes the Confederate battle emblem. The symbol has been there since 1894, and voters chose to keep it in 2001. Supporters of the flag, including Sons of Confederate Veterans, say it represents their heritage.

Confederate images have come under fresh scrutiny in the past year, since the massacre of nine black worshippers at a church in Charleston, South Carolina. The white man awaiting trial in the slayings had previously posed with the Confederate battle flag in photos posted online.

Page 9: CAMPTALK - TEW4515.comtew4515.com/Camp1387/s/2016_Camp-Talk/CmpTk... · through and Miss Lee has a long history of programs regarding the home front. ***** Charles Kelly Barrow Commander

Weeks after the June 17, 2015, mass shooting, South Carolina lawmakers removed a Confederate battle flag that had flown for generations on the Statehouse grounds in Columbia. The University of Mississippi, the University of Southern Mississippi and several local governments have stopped flying the state flag in the past year. For the past several months, Ellis has protested the state flag with dresses at red carpet events, including a white ball gown with a red handprint and the slogan, "Take It Down, Mississippi."

The Republican speaker of the Mississippi House and both of the state's Republican U.S. senators said soon after the Charleston slayings that Mississippi should replace its flag with a symbol that could unify people. However, during the state legislative session earlier this year, Speaker Philip Gunn said he couldn't get consensus in the Republican-majority House to consider bills to redesign the banner.

Carlos Moore, an African-American attorney from Grenada, Mississippi, filed a federal lawsuit in February making the argument that the flag is an unconstitutional vestige of slavery. U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves heard arguments in April but has not ruled in the case.

Moore said in an interview last week that he wants Congress to outlaw all Confederate symbols on public property, including flags, statues and monuments. He makes the same argument as in his lawsuit.

"With one fell swoop, Congress could solve this problem if they took it seriously," Moore said.

Genesis Be, a singer who grew up in Mississippi and lives in New York, said the rebel sign on the state flag sends a hostile message about a place that calls itself the hospitality state.

"I think having that flag up is very divisive," said Be, who also plans to protest Tuesday. During an April performance in New York, she draped herself in a Confederate battle flag and put a noose around her neck to protest Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant's proclamation of April as Confederate Heritage Month.

Editor’s Note: Somewhat less than fair and balanced. Among others things there is no mention that a state wide vote has already been done and that the existing flag won by a wide margin including among blacks. Black is just a darker shade of Confederate gray!

***************************************************************** Coming Article We have an article on the technical aspects of conserving the Hunley from Clemson University that was published in the university magazine Glimpse in 2012. It is a bit dated but still very good. It is too lengthy to run this month but summer issues have more available space when our activities are slow. If we can not manage to free up the space we will post this interesting and informative article on the camp website or face book page. Many thanks to compatriot Real Grandson Dan Wall for this article. Editor
