‘ The Wire’ (Reminders,  information  and  important  dates)

Welcome to the New Campsmount

After two and a half challenging years Campsmount finally returned home on Wednesday 18 April. Battling through a difficult period after the devastating fire in December 2009 and then managing the school through an extended period in the temporary Portakabin facilities were just memories as we welcomed back students, after the Easter break, into a new, state of the art school designed for 21st century learning.

Students were thrilled by the new facilities and the words ‘awesome’ and ‘amazing’ resounded through the open and airy forum space as students entered the building for the first time. It has been lovely to see the way that students have settled very quickly into the new school and how they are utilising the new facilities on offer. For example, the music practice rooms have been very busy, as well as the social learning spaces that are part of every wing of the school, the Learning Resource Centre is now fully operational as an additional learning space and library and our Dance Studio has already provided students with a superb place to practise their dance and movement skills.

Classrooms are comfortable and modern and the number of flexible walls between learning spaces will ensure that we can develop innovative ways of teaching and learning in the future.

Academy Status and our Partnership Group

On the 1st May 2012 Campsmount converted to Academy status. This is the next stage in our development and builds on the positive work previously achieved through our conversion to a Foundation Trust school in January 2009. Unlike many schools who are ‘sponsored academies’, we will still retain our autonomy, our local co-operative governance and we will not rely on an external body to determine how we lead and manage the school.

We have become an academy because it will enable us to better protect the fantastic achievements, that we are all so proud of, that have been realised through the support of our community in the past five years.

If you would like to contribute to moving our Academy Trust forward by raising money and actively helping in determining the future direction of Campsmount please contact [email protected] for information about our Partnership Group. Your help and support is always gratefully received.

We will be running ‘tours on the hour’ (9.00, 10.00, 11.00, 12.00 etc. - all the way through to 6.00pm) on Thursday 21 June 2012.

Because of security reasons the tours will have to be by appointment only. In order to book a place you can e-mail me at [email protected] or telephone 01302 700002 stating your choice of time and the number of places required. We will also have a stall at Askern Gala on Saturday 2 June 2012 where you will also be able to make an appointment.

ASKERN GALA – 2 JUNE 2012

As mentioned above, our Partnership Group will be fund raising at the Gala on Saturday 2 June 2012. We have lots of great prizes on our Tombola stall and the ladies in the kitchen will be baking cakes to be sold on the day. We will also be selling a short DVD, “The Journey”, made for the official open evening (held on Thursday 26 April 2012 – priced at £2). There will also be an opportunity for you to book a place on the tour of our new school. So please come along and support what we hope will be a fantastic day!

STUDENTS LEAVING COLLEGE DURING THE SCHOOL DAY

Can we ask that if your son/daughter has an appointment during the school day (doctor, dentist, interview etc.) would you please be kind enough to send them with a note giving the time and reason for departure. We appreciate that appointments can sometimes be last minute and we are more than willing to help on these occasions. However, a note sent with your son/daughter would certainly make leaving school a much smoother process.

‘ The Buzz’ (Recent  news,  events  and  achievements)

Campsmount Cheerleaders are Doncaster Champions!

Our fantastic Campsmount Cheerleaders are, once again, Doncaster champions. The girls gave an outstanding performance to win the Doncaster Secondary Schools Cheerleading Competition hosted here at Campsmount. They beat off tough competition from McAuley Catholic School who were the runners up. The Campsmount cheerleading squad have qualified to once again represent Doncaster at the South Yorkshire School Games. This will be the second time they have competed at this level, and they will hopefully build on their success of being bronze medallists at this year’s Games. We also had a fantastic guest performance from Doncaster Knights Cheerleaders, showcasing some cheerleading stunts which definitely finished the evening on a high! Well done to all those who took part!

The Eurovision Dance Contest

This year’s dance show took Place on the 21st of March and was even bigger and better than ever before; ticket sales were the highest they have ever been with the tickets selling out 2 days before the event. The night was a great success with some amazing dance being showcased from Campsmout students and our fantastic junior schools; Norton Juniors and Askern Spa Juniors. The theme of the evening was Male Legends, with an amazing closing performance, including all the Campsmount girls, dancing to Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’. However, Norton Juniors stole the show; it was the first time ever the contest has been won by a junior group. They had obviously worked extremely hard alongside their teacher Miss Jones to produce some very convincing zombie moves. The children were practically professionals; even when there was a technical hitch with the music they managed to hold it together and produce a winning performance. Year 10 Campsmount girls were runners up in the competition with a very original and energetic piece. Well done, girls!

Dance here at Campsmount and in our feeder schools, Askern Spa and Norton Juniors, grows year on year. This is largely down to the commitment of the students and teachers involved as well as our amazing dance teacher, Bekki Dyas, who never fails to inspire the students with creative and challenging dance routines. We are hoping that next year the contest will continue to grow and include groups of dancers from our three infant schools.

The winning dance group, from Norton Juniors, enjoyed a fantastic day out at City Limits Dance Studios in Sheffield. The children were very excited to be dancing in the very same studios where the week previously Diversity had been practising. The children took part in three very different dance sessions including: Ballroom Dance, Street Dance and Rock ‘n’ Roll. The staff were excellent and the children were highly entertained learning about different types of dance. They were full of energy and smiles all day!

A big thank you must go to all Staff who took part on the night and all the staff and students behind the scenes who worked extremely hard to make this year’s Eurovision Dance Contest the best one yet. Many thanks - Miss Burrows

Italy Football Tour – Venice 2012 Review

This year was Campsmount’s 10th tour and ,after a five-year absence, we were finally back on Italian soil to be greeted by some glorious sunshine. Following checking in to our hotel it was time to get straight on with the matters to hand, a light training session to allow the lads

Page 3: Campsmount News June 2012

to acclimatise themselves to both the heat and the long grass! The evening followed with a well-earned meal, shower and some time to unpack and chill out.

Saturday saw the start of our cultural part of the tour, a day out in the beautiful city of Venice. This comprised of a leisurely ferry across the Venetian lagoon from Punta Sabbioni to Venice. We then met our tour guide who led us round the historic city, taking in the wondrous sites and explaining its history. After a spot of lunch we then travelled down the Grand Union Canal on the Vaporetti (waterbus).

Sunday comprised of a rather long coach journey across Italy to Milan to watch a Serie A league match between Inter Milan and Genoa at the Stadio Giuseppe (San Siro). 42,000 people saw an action packed game with the final score, Inter Milan 5 – Genoa 4. An awesome experience was had by all. Indeed, many of the students hadn’t been to such an impressive stadium before, so it was a wonderful experience. The evening was rounded off well with some beach and pool time.

On Monday we spent most of the day at one of Italy’s premier theme parks, Gardaland. Later that evening saw the start of what we really went to Italy for, football! The younger boys’ squad started the tour off very well with an excellent win over Giovanissimi Jesolo, in what was a very close game with well-matched opposition. The older boys’ squad had a very narrow defeat at the hands of Allievi Jesolo but to be fair had many chances to get something out of the game.

Tuesday morning gave us more opportunities to hit the beach or pool before heading out for a game of ten-pin bowling followed by a traditional Pizza lunch. The second set of fixtures, against Giovanissimi Jesolo (junior boys) and Allievi Pro Mogliano (senior boys) followed that evening. A very capable footballing side comfortably beat the younger boys’ squad, though to their credit, they never gave up and battled all the way to the final whistle. The older boys’ squad, once again, lost narrowly to Italian opposition but put in an impressive 2nd half performance which nearly gave them a share of the spoils (which on reflection, they deserved over the 2 games). During the evening we were able to relax with a coca cola and watch the champions league game between Barcelona and AC Milan on TV. A real treat!

Sadly, we then had to put an end to proceedings and catch our flight home.

May I take this opportunity to thank the students for their exemplary behavior and for representing the school in the way we have become accustomed to on all of our football tours and on visits in general organised through Campsmount. Also, could I express my thanks to the Parents for giving their son(s) the opportunity to take part in this fantastic tour and the experiences it offers. Finally, I would like to thank the staff who without their support I could not have run such a successful tour.

Mr. G Faulkner (Head of Performance)

A DAY ON THE CRAG – STANAGE EDGE

WOW - What a great day and the best weather this year so far!!

Students from Campsmount set off at 8:30 am on Saturday the 26th May to visit the Peak District to climb some of the routes at Stanage Edge. We were joined by Daryl from the Leeds Wall who acted as our guide and instructor for the day. A great day was had by all the students and staff with some great climbing. It truly was a pleasure to see how well students from all years worked together to help each other out by overcoming some very challenging climbs.

If other students are interested, we will be running another trip in the future and we will also be running indoor trips to the Leeds Wall, so please see Mr. Huntridge and let’s get climbing!

Thanks  -‐  Mr Huntridge and Miss Ward
