Unlike most brochures you receive through your door, you will notice that many of our pages are dedicated to our ethos rather than the fine details for each trip... this is no accident.

To work for Camps requires a rare level of dedication and passion. The simple fact is that we all care deeply for the projects to which we have committed ourselves and this brochure is just one way of sending our message that ‘good business can also be good for the planet’. The experiences we offer you, our guest, are a means by which we can achieve our ethical objectives and of course, make our company successful.

The faces you see throughout these pages are just some of the extraordinary people who make Camps International special. This is our chance to tell you how we differ from the other organisations out there and why you should choose to travel with us on expedition which, after all is only going to happen once for most people.

All of our programmes offer you the perfect mix of community, wildlife, environment and adventure so you don’t have to choose between community projects or conservation work - we want you to get involved with everything we do.

Unlike many organisations, we commit to the completion of all our projects, regardless of whether you choose to travel with us, so you can be confident that the work you do will have a lasting impact on the communities and environment.

Of the thousands of volunteers who have travelled with us, nearly everyone tells us the same thing. That is, regardless of whether it was their reason for coming in the first place, it was the involvement with the people and children in the communities that made their experience so very special. Working with communities is not something unique to us; the way we do it is. A close second are the wildlife conservation projects to which we are fiercely committed. We are currently working to conserve over 130,000 acres of important wildlife habitat across Kenya, Tanzania, Borneo and Ecuador as well as marine conservation in the Pacific and Indian Oceans and South China Sea.

For the more adventurous among you, there are opportunities to undertake a personal challenge such as mountain or jungle trekking, or working towards an internationally recognised PADI scuba diving qualification.

Travelling with us gives you a unique opportunity to live among rural communities, making lifelong friends and sharing unforgettable experiences. All this whilst developing social, leadership and teamwork skills to achieve a common goal.

The Camps Foundation was started in order to raise the additional funds needed to support our huge range of project commitments. 100% of all donations raised are spent on projects – this is our 100% guarantee.

We use our company resources on a not for profit basis, our staff and network of committed ex clients and friends to raise funds. The company pays for all administration of the Foundation, so every penny raised is a penny spent on projects.

Nothing you see in this brochure, our website or the films we produce will prepare you for the sensation of travelling with us. Our camps are built in the heart of the communities and wildlife reserves with whom we work and are staffed by the local people who have grown up there.

We build locally, employ locally and buy whatever resources we can locally. Before a camp is established we agree objectives with the community to enhance their way of life, protect their environment and conserve the local wildlife. This process defines the purpose for each camp and the experiences that you as a volunteer will immerse yourself in.

We have offices and over 150 staff in Africa, Asia and Latin America, providing around the clock communications, vehicle servicing, food supplies, stores, security and operational support. For transport we use a mix of minibuses, landcruisers and our prized Bedford truck conversions.

Accommodation ranges from traditional thatched buildings and longhouses to a simple dome tent or even a hammock in the jungle or on the beach. We provide you with comfy accommodation that is in keeping with the surrounding environment wherever you stay; unless of course being ‘uncomfortable’ is unavoidable such as halfway up a mountain!

It is the responsibility of our locally employed kitchen teams to keep you well fed and watered throughout your stay. Our kitchens always act as the heart of any camp and our staff work extremely hard to consistently create a great standard of food for most dietary requirements, regardless of power cuts, monsoon rains and supply trucks breaking down.

Depending on your length of stay and where you’re travelling to, you will spend time in several of our camps to get a true flavour of the country you’re visiting. The following pages give you a taster of what you can expect...

OUR CAMPSOUR CAMPS ARE BUILT AND RUN BY LOCAL PEOPLE

Camp Tsavo is one of the most spectacular places you will ever visit. Set in the middle of an 80,000 acre private conservation area bordering the world famous Tsavo National Parks, this exquisite location offers you a once in a lifetime chance to live alongside amazing wildlife in the heart of the African bush.

This permanent camp is laid out like a traditional African village and is surrounded by stunning panoramic views of Rukinga sanctuary on all sides. More than 50 species of large mammals inhabit the sanctuary including lions, cheetahs, leopards, African wild dogs, elephants, buffalos, hyenas, giraffes and endangered Grevvy’s zebras. It is also home to over 300 species of birds, dozens of reptiles and amphibians and thousands of insect species.

Camp Muhaka is a permanent bush camp set within a small rural African community on the lower slopes of the Shimba Hills. Built in 2007, this beautiful camp sits in the middle of a forest, rich in palm and mango trees that provide cooling shade from the heat of the sun, where monkeys and bush babies inquisitively watch you from the canopy.

The schools and community groups that we are working with are just across the road and it is only a short walk to the sacred Kaya Muhaka forest where one of our conservation projects is based. This gives you the chance to experience first hand the positive effect that your work has on the community.

CAMP MAKONGENI

Makongeni was the first camp we built back in 2004 and is named after the community where it’s located. This charming rural village is only 4 km away from the Indian Ocean and is on the edge of a stunning mangrove forest fringed by palm trees.

Makongeni is an unspoilt location off the beaten track giving you a real taste of authentic African life and a place to make lifelong friends and strong bonds with the local community.

SOUTH COAST, KENYA

Camp Tanga is a rustic bush camp set in the heart of a small Tanzanian community on the beach of the Indian Ocean. Built in 2010, this incredible camp overlooks the ocean, with two beautiful Baobab trees in the centre of camp.  At night, bush babies can be seen jumping from tree to tree as the moon rises over the ocean.

The camp’s central location in the village means many of the ocean related activities are just steps away.  You will experience authentic local village life by living and working alongside this charming fishing community. The nearest town is Tanga, approximately 10 km north of Camp Tanga.

CAMP TANGANORTH COAST, TANZANIA

In 2012, Camps International established itself in the pearl of Africa – Uganda. In partnership with the only safe haven for white rhino, the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, Camp Uganda will further its long term commitment to wildlife conservation on the continent through our responsible travel model. And of course no visit to Uganda is complete without passage along the longest river in Africa, the Nile and its source Lake Victoria. Hairy Lemon Camp set up on a little island will be our base for community service outreach and long term friendships with the ever welcoming Ugandan people.

Established in 2008, Camp Tinangol is based around a beautifully crafted traditional long house, raised off the ground on stilts and divided into a communal area along one side and a row of private living quarters lined down the other. The camp is situated just beyond the rural Rungus community of the same name where you will become immersed in local culture and tradition.

The Kampung (village) of Tinangol is home to around 800 people and consists of three longhouses each housing 25 families (roughly 200 people) as well as a scattering of separate stilt houses.

CAMP TINANGOLSABAH, BORNEO

We have built Camp Bongkud in the centre of a traditional Dusun community in Western Sabah. The camp benefits from the close proximity to the fabulous locals who have so much to offer. This part of Borneo has suffered from ruthless deforestation and mining in the past so our projects are aimed at producing as much benefit from the natural surroundings as possible.

The camp is also the starting point for a trek into the jungle where volunteers can master the art of survival in a completely new environment.

MOUNT KINABALU, BORNEO

Camp Mantanani is located on the stunningly beautiful island after which it was named, just off the coast of Borneo. Surrounded by turquoise waters and colourful coral reefs, this place is a hidden gem. Juvenile turtles, dolphins and a multitude of glittering reef fish frequent the waters, making Mantanani an ideal location for our marine conservation projects.

The camp itself is set right on the beach a little way from the island’s sole village where one of our community projects is based. Although the accommodation is basic, this close proximity gives you the chance to experience the benefit your work has on the people you will be living and working with.

CAMP MANTANANISABAH, BORNEO

Camp Beng Mealea was built in late 2010 and is based outside Siem Reap, Cambodia’s second city and the gateway to the fascinating Khmer Empire. It is here that the stunning temples of Angkor Wat and the ancient capital of Angkor Thom can be found. This part of Cambodia is home to literally hundreds of temples built between 1200 and 800 years ago with many towns and villages springing up originally to support the communities at these temples. The commune of Beng Mealea is no different, the main road lying right next to the entrance of the dramatic Beng Mealea Temple. Our Camp is a short way down this same road, hidden from view by the local school and the beautiful Buddhist Pagoda. The pace of life in Beng Mealea is slow and relaxed and it’s very easy to imagine that it has changed little in hundreds of years.

Camp Costa is in the heart of a small village, overlooking the warm and sunny Pacific Ocean. This position gives you the chance to experience local village life in this charming fishing town and see how your work has a positive effect on the area. There are many activities available on the coast; islands to visit, whale watching, ancient cultural sites and sulphur springs to explore or just chilling on some of Ecuador’s best beaches and in the famous surfer town of Montanita.

After a hard days work, kick back, lounge in your hammock and look out to sea - you may be lucky enough to spot dolphins, sea lions and even the mighty humpback whales.

CAMP COSTAPACIFIC OCEAN, ECUADOR

Camp MAquiCLOUD FOREST, ECUADOR

Our camp is set in a small community within a 14,000-acre reserve in the heart of Ecuador’s stunning cloud forest. This very special location offers you jaw-dropping views in every direction. Home to the charismatic yet endangered Andean spectacled bear, the forest is one of the most important ecological areas in the world, teeming with an abundance of animals and birds. The reserve boasts 50 species of mammals, 370 species of birds and a whopping 1000 species of plants, 346 of which are orchids. This peaceful location could easily be mistaken for paradise as hummingbirds dart past you in the morning and late afternoon. The camp’s central location in the village means that the wide variety of projects are within a few minutes walk, giving you the chance to see how your hard work benefits the community and protects the reserve.

Camp Peru will be available as an addition to South America gap year programmes and for selected school itineraries from 2013 onwards.

Our camps are situated in the south of the country, an area which encompasses the High Andes, Pacific Coast and the desert. This location allows us access to many of the continent’s greatest historical sites and adventures. The historical capital of the Incan Empire, Cuzco, is the starting point for any trek to Machu Picchu the lost city of the Incas. Further south, from Arequipa, we can easily reach the desert and Colca Canyon, home of the mighty condor. Finally, Puno acts as the gateway to Lake Titicaca, the world’s highest navigable lake.

When something is fundamentally right, it just works. There are no handouts to be had and all our projects are established in partnership with local people.

The process invariably starts with a long, hot meeting in the village with the members of the community who shape the indigenous way of life. We discuss the needs of the community with women’s groups and respected elders and how we can achieve a list of sustainable development objectives, working together.

Our camps act as a source of local industry and employment with food produce and project materials bought locally. We bring the funds, enthusiastic travellers and guarantee sustainability. During your stay with us you will be involved with projects ranging from low-level construction to making elephant dung paper.

We successfully balance project needs with our need to ensure that you have an incredible experience that is fulfilling in every way.

The end result is an international, multi-racial, multi-religious and culturally diverse community achieving extraordinary things together.

Fostering long term relationships between us and the communities with whom we work, across the globe, is central to what we do. Our aim is to help them sustain their own cultures and identities whilst developing their independence.

Living and working in our locations all year round has enabled us to make a real and lasting difference to the communities that we work with by improving their access to proper sanitation, clean drinking water, healthcare and an education. We have up to 100 different projects running at any one time and the projects undertaken by our volunteers have benefitted around 30,000 people in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Here are just a few examples so far...

• Over 9,000 volunteers and 200 UK and International schools have contributed to our projects

• Together we have improved and built 30 schools

• We have constructed over 200,000 litres of water storage and installed 6 gravity fed water systems to provide communities with clean drinking water

• We have constructed 34 school and community ablution blocks to improve sanitation

• We have built 5 new school kitchen and dining facilities for school children

• We have built over 2000 fuel-efficient stoves for rural communities

• Our feeding programmes have supported more than 800 young children in Africa

For over 10 years we have worked on a long-term sustainable development plan with the village of Makongeni in Kenya, to improve learning facilities for over 600 children and provide the community of over 3,000 people with better sanitation and clean drinking water.

Here are just some of our achievements so far:

Significantly reduced waterborne diseases like cholera by constructing aborehole, water pump and gravity-fed water tank

Constructed two 8-unit ablution blocks

Built a nursery school for 150 children and purchased learning materials

Built a fully equipped library with over 3,000 books

Constructed and refurbished 11 classrooms, office and staff quarters

Made 324 desks

Constructed perimeter fencing to improve school security

Provided electricity for the school

Provided scholarships to allow students to continue onto secondary education

Held regular community workshops and village clean-ups

Treated 280 children for parasitic ‘jiggers’ infestation

Planted 20,000 naturally occurring coastal trees

Provided over 10,500 hours of teaching assistance and sports coaching

Created jobs for 22 young people in the community

Created a farm for the young people to generate an income

Built 4 traditional houses for people in desperate living condiitons

Our conservation projects are targeted to include four of the world’s top biodiversity hotspots - areas with the richest and most threatened animal and plant life on Earth - so that our efforts deliver the biggest benefits.

Our programmes offer you the opportunity to contribute to ongoing wildlife conservation projects that provide you with a working safari experience. Our projects aim to increase the value of wildlife and habitats by working with communities to develop alternatives to over-exploitation of natural resources. This results in a reduction in conflict between people and wildlife, as well as encouraging environmental stewardship from the local communities.

We have a wide range of conservation activities that could include anything from digging waterholes and fishponds, building anti-poaching rangers huts, making elephant dung paper, planting food trees for orangutans and vaccinating livestock to learning about sea turtle conservation, planning environmental education workshops or contributing to our ‘art for conservation’ initiative to raise awareness of the threats facing some of the world’s most amazing animals.

Our aim is to turn you into a global ambassador for wildlife conservation, for now and for future generations.

The health of our oceans, rivers and forests is crucial to our survival and wellbeing, yet unsustainable human activities are putting increasing pressure on our planet.

Our projects tackle issues such as deforestation, pollution and over-harvesting of wildlife and your activities could include anything from planting trees to developing alternative fuel sources for communities.

Our work is not restricted to dry land and it is no coincidence that many of our camps are located on or near the coast. Our beaches are among the most spectacular in the world. Simple beach clean-ups achieve an enormous amount and go a long way to educate future generations as to the real value of conserving our marine ecosystems.

WE DON’T CUT CORNERS IN OUR SAFETY, ETHICS, INTEGRITY OR RESPONSIBILITIES

ADVENTUREPersonal challenge is an important part of any expedition and we offer a range of different adventure activities, depending on which country you visit.

Mountain trekking: We pride ourselves on a summit success rate that is rare to find in our industry, which stands at over 90% for the thousands of adventurers who have trekked with us. It is an outstanding achievement to even start one of these treks and not to be entered into lightly. The rewards of any trek are incredible and we will not even try to describe the extraordinary sense of achievement that comes from standing on a summit and watching the sun rise over Africa, Asia or Latin America. Our formula for success relies on professional guides, well paid porters and quite simply, we take longer and go slower.

Jungle trekking: Trekking with local guides through dense tropical jungle is a once in a lifetime opportunity that allows you to push yourself beyond your comfort zone and embark on a journey of discovery and exploration. As well as

undertaking the trek we like to try and teach the skills required to survive in such difficult terrain and the ecology of these endangered environments.

Scuba courses: Our scuba expeditions offer volunteers the opportunity to gain internationally recognised PADI qualifications in some of the most stunning parts of the world.

Wildlife Watching: Most of our programmes include spectacular wildlife viewing opportunities but if you want to experience even more, we offer a range of extended safaris and wildlife excursions.

Galapagos Islands: A two island adventure in one of the world’s most iconic and valuable destinations. Our trip gives a taste of the vast array of animals, tropical beaches and volcanoes that characterize this incredible place.

Machu Picchu trek: No trip to Peru is complete without trekking up to the UNESCO world heritage site of Machu Picchu.

This is the most important aspect of your expedition and something we take very seriously. Unlike most UK expedition companies, our operations team consisting of over 150 staff are mainly located where you are, in the expedition destination, as well as our team in the UK. This means we are on hand to prevent and deal with incidents rather than just react to them from afar.

There is no doubt that the greatest benefits and rewards to you will come from the most challenging tasks and adventures. Our job is to ensure that the challenges we introduce you to and the services we provide are as safe as possible. We recognise that world travel and adventure will take you to unfamiliar destinations and environments and stretch your comfort zone. That is why we have professional and experienced leaders and members of camp staff to provide a fully supported expedition around the clock. In most instances we use

our own highly maintained vehicles for transfers. When this is not possible, we will use approved third party providers. Through experience and local expertise, we know where the dangers and pitfalls are and as a result of thorough risk assessments and constant awareness, we do all that is possible to keep you safe and well. We choose our camps carefully to ensure that they are strategically located close to approved medical facilities, and have in place rehearsed medical and emergency procedures to ensure you receive the best standard of care possible. In addition to this, our camps are located in safe and secure areas and through our relationship with the local communities, we benefit from a high degree of local security.

In simple terms, the locals see us as part of their community and take good care of us. To complement this we employ our own security team to maintain a 24-hour presence to deter any ‘would be’ petty crime.

The benefits of an expedition with us are immense and place you in situations that cannot be replicated at home or in the classroom. Employers and universities look favourably on this type of experience as it gives you the chance to build up your CV with unique skills and experiences that set you apart from the rest of the crowd.

You will increase your work experience, learn a new language, immerse yourself in new cultures, help others, make new and lasting friendships and have the chance to reflect on your personal skills and desires before fully committing to a course or career.

We also have a customised agreement with ASDAN, enabling students to work towards getting 70 UCAS points or a recognised universities award when participating in one of our expeditions.

In November 2011, 25 dedicated volunteers from the medical profession travelled from the UK to Kenya in order to take part in our pioneering new Healthcare Outreach Programme.

The group comprised mainly practice nurses, but also GP’s and healthcare assistants. Over the course of two weeks, they ran 8 free medical clinics for the local community, providing treatment and advise on nutrition, sexual health and hygiene, but with their main focus on the treatment and eradication of jiggers.

In just two weeks the healthcare team:

• Ran clinics in the villages of Makongeni, Muhaka, Madago, Fihoni, Kilole, Mkwambani, Magaoni and Zigira

• Successfully treated 7,444 medical incidences. Many people were treated for 3-4 different ailments at once and every patient was dewormed.

• In one day the team managed to treat 150 children and over 500 adults!

This collection of volunteers went from relentless healthcare workers treating thousands of people to star fundraisers all in the same month. A few weeks after they had left Kenya the Camps Foundation had received a donation of £2500 to entirely rennovate and improve the water security and storage at the Muhaka dispensary which was completely in shambles.

Following the overwhelming success of the 2011 expedition, we launched more healthcare outreach expeditions in Kenya and Cambodia and are planning more for the future. Our long-term vision is to be able to provide this programme in all our destinations, particularly Tanzania and Cambodia, to provide clinics at all our camps and to provide medical support to the community on a more regular basis.

We have spent an unhealthy amount of time trying to decide whether to produce a brochure at all. We work hard at Camps to minimise our negative impact on our planet wherever possible and this brochure is made from Forest Stewardship Council approved paper and is 100% chlorine free. When you have no further use of this brochure, please either recycle it or send it back to us and we will reuse it with or without coffee ring stains.
