CAMPION NEWSLETTER Issue 22.03 Friday, 19th October 2018 Tel: 01708 452332 Email: [email protected] Website: www.campion.havering.sch.uk There but not There ……. During the centenary year of the final year of World War 1, the nation is recalling and acknowledging the sacrifice made by between 867,829 and 1,011,687 young British men killed in the war and 1,675,000 wounded made in loyalty to their country. It also acknowledges the sacrifice made by between 15,486,153 and 19,174, 335 wounded. In addition, we are asked to recognise the sacrifice of between 15,486,153 to 19,174,335 worldwide killed in the war and 22,101,100 and 23,665,873 wounded. We are asked to reflect on the cost of war and our part in decisions that lead to mass conflicts such as the First World War and subsequent wars which have occurred in every decade since. This project is named the There but not Therecampaign which involves an installation of silhouettes of World War 1 soldiers decorated to express the meaning of remembrance across the country. Campion has decided to participate in this campaign by asking Year 9 students to design their own silhouettes and explain the message they reflect. We have been highly impressed by the response of Year 9. Their responses have been sensitive and reflective, and they have dedicated many hours of their free time to the completion of this project. We are also grateful to the DT Department for producing the silhouettes. We look forwards to seeing the figures completed and will make sure they are on the next newsletter. The figures will be displayed with others from borough schools on from the 8 th -11 th November in Romford Cemetery (Crow Lane) and we hope that they will encourage people to consider the role and impact of war on our world. During the centenary year of the final year of World War 1, the nation is recalling and acknowledging the sacrifice made by between 867,829 and 1,011,687 young British men killed in the war and 1,675,000 wounded made in loyalty to their country. Westminster Abbey Icon Writing Day

Well done to all year 10 art students who behaved impeccably on our recent trip to Westminster Abbey. Students were given an amazing guided tour of the Abbey, sitting in the choir stalls, climbing g the steps to the St Edward the Confessor shrine and learning lots about the different Kings and Queens. They also had a fantastic opportunity to learn about Icon Writing from Father Regan, a priest and artist, who taught them about using egg tempura paint, gold leaf and the meanings behind these extremely important prayers to God. Miss Giesen Subject Leader for Art and Design

We arrived at the Abbey at 9.40 am and were immediately whisked away to watch and interesting video on the history of the Abbey building. My group was taken away on a tour of the Abbey where we say many things, including the coronation chair, two icons that were presented to the church and finally the graves of many Kings and Queens. After lunch in the cloisters we had an afternoon being taught by Father Regan about Icon Writing. The process is really interesting and hard to do properly. It was a fun and interesting day, despite the long coach journey home. William Law

Thank you for helping to ‘Brighten up this harvest

and build a brighter world.’ On Friday 5th October

2018, we managed to raise £ 160.33 for CAFOD’s

‘Brighten Up’ campaign.

This week we have delivered 140 bags to our local

food bank in Harold Hill. This is an amazing

response to the needs of others in our local

community.

Thank you for all your kind donations!

The CAFOD Team

Sewing Project

We are running a sewing project for beginners to professional level on Thursdays with two different groups and times 10am-12pm and 12.30pm to 2.00pm. The courses will run for eight weeks and the aim is to allow participants to develop skills which they can use to become self-employed or seek employment in the fashion industry or simply just to meet new people. Courses will be run throughout the year (during term times) and our funders are particularly interested in lone parents participating in this opportunity which is totally free of charge. The course is being run by an experienced tutor in the fashion industry. If you would like to join one of the groups or simply ask questions please call our office at 01708 397 484 or email [email protected]

VOMITING AND DIARRHOEA

I would like to remind Parents/Carers that students need to be clear of symptoms for 48 hours if they are suffering with sickness and diarrhoea. For one illness on its own then they need to be clear for 24 hours. I would ask that if your son/daughter is unwell in the morning and is too unwell for school, they stay at home. Recently there has been an increase in the number of students coming into school unwell and having to go home within the first hour of school. This can obviously add to the spread of virus around school. Mrs T Kennett Pupil Welfare Officer

VEHICULAR ACCESS

Can I remind you of the procedure for dropping off/collecting your child from the school.

Students can only be dropped off or collected from the main school playground, no matter what time of day. Please do not stop, wait, park, turn, etc in any other areas at any time. The main school car park is only for staff and visitors to the school.

Please also observe the school's strict 5 mph speed limit.

Attention all Sixth Form Students Guidance notes:

If a student should become unwell during the course of the day, they must present themselves to the Medical and Welfare Officer, Mrs Kennett Students must sign out at 12.30 pm if they have no lesson(s) in the afternoon and they wish to leave the premises. It is not acceptable that a student should go off site without the knowledge of the school. Your safety is of paramount importance to us. The school must be given prior notification of appointments taking place during school hours via the parent portal, telephone or email Mrs A Peters

What is abuse?: A form of maltreatment of a child. Somebody may abuse or neglect a child by inflicting harm or by failing to act to prevent harm. Children may be abused in a family or in an institutional or community setting by those known to them or, more rarely, by others. Abuse can take place wholly online, or technology may be used to facilitate offline abuse. They may be abused by an adult or adults or by another child or children.
