From the Principal’s Desk…

Term 4 is always a very busy and

exciting term, with teachers and

students focused on a strong finish to

the current year’s learning programs

and future planning also underway.

Students will be participating in rituals

and ceremonies that mark significant

milestones, and experiences that will

challenge them in new and different

ways.

Our team of five Year 9 School for Student Leadership

students departed for their nine week residential experience at

Dinner Plain last weekend, drawing heavily on their reserves

of curiosity and courage to overcome any trepidation they

may have been feeling! This is a wonderful personal

development opportunity for students and we look forward to

hearing from Jessica, Paddy, Kristy, Jordan W and Jordan G

once they settle into the routines of the SSL. Our current Year

8 students can begin to consider this future opportunity as we

have been successful in obtaining a Term 2 placement for a

team of six students in 2019, also at the Dinner Plain (Alpine)

Campus. Detailed information will be shared with students

and families in the coming weeks, with formal expressions of

interest to be invited.

Next Tuesday the Senior Campus students, staff and families

will come together to celebrate the end of thirteen years of

schooling for our Year 12 students. With classes finishing

next week our Year 12 VCE students will be concentrating on

preparing thoroughly for their final exams, with teachers

readily available to support their revision efforts and provide

guidance. Completing practice exam questions and

incorporating teacher feedback to refine and up-level

responses is a critical component of this final revision stage.

Our final Year 12 assembly on Tuesday is a much anticipated

ceremonial event and is shaping up to be an emotional and

entertaining experience!

This term we have welcomed Year 1/2N teacher Julie Nelson

back from leave and are preparing to farewell Prep teacher

Claire Tucker who expects to commence maternity leave in

November. Indonesian teacher Jenna French has advised that

she will return from family leave for the new school year and

our Indonesian language program will resume at both

campuses in 2019. The College will be advertising a small

number of 2019 teaching positions on Recruitment Online

and School Council is presently advertising locally for a

casual maintenance person. (See advertisement in this

newsletter and contact the Senior Campus Office for details.)

From next Monday 22nd October we will be hosting

Horsham College Assistant Principal Meg Woodford for a

seven week Principal internship at Camperdown College.

Meg is currently undertaking the Unlocking Potential

program through the Department of Education’s Bastow

Institute of Educational Leadership. Meg will spend time

working alongside myself and our Assistant Principals Clare

Monk and Vicki Angus to develop her understanding of

school leadership in a P-12 setting. Meg will bring valuable

experiences and perspectives to our leadership team and is

looking forward to meeting our students, staff and families

next week.

In finishing I would like to extend my congratulations to a

number of Camperdown College students who have excelled

in their respective fields recently. Year 5 student Stella

Horspole has achieved excellence at the Interschool

Equestrian Championships, leading the Victorian rankings

and achieving runner-up at a national level. Year 12 student

Lauren McIlveen has been selected for a University of

Melbourne Principals’ Scholarship and Year 11 student

Jayson Haynes was recognised as the SW TAFE VETiS

Electrical highest achieving student. All three students are

well deserving of these awards, showing exemplary

dedication to their goals.

Year 12:

Our Year 12 students had a busy time over the holidays and since then attending lectures and revision classes both at school and

throughout the state. Thank you to staff who have given up their time to conduct or transport students to these lectures.

Next Monday 22nd October is the final day of classes for our Year 12 students. On Tuesday at 9am a final assembly will be conducted

by the Year 12 students – parents are most welcome to attend. Year 12 students will then join the staff for morning tea before

enjoying a Mystery Trip for the rest of the day. Students must then work in earnest to continue to revise and prepare for their exams,

with the first exam being English on Wednesday 31st October. We wish all students the very best for their exams.

School for Student Leadership:

Our team of Year 9 School for Student Leadership students Jessica O’Connor, Kristy Parsons, Jordan Grey, Jordan Watson and

Dalton Mitchell were farewelled at our celebration assembly last term. On the weekend they travelled to Dinner Plain with their

families and have commenced their stay. Early reports have indicated that they have settled in well. During their time at the school

they will develop their Community Learning Project. This project will involve organising a Colour Run for Prep – Year 9 students at

Frederick Street during the last week of this term.

Indonesian Study Tour:

Mrs French returned from leave last week to meet with representatives from the company that organise our Indonesian study tour. A

letter will be sent home with Year 8 – 10 students inviting those interested to an information session to be held on Thursday 25th

October at 7pm.

Art & Technology Expo:

Ms Mann and Mr Brooks spent yesterday ferrying student work to the Camperdown Courthouse to present for the Art & Technology

Expo. The show opens tonight at 6pm and runs until the end of next week. Please find time to attend either the opening or pop in to

see the wonderful talent on display.

VCE English Texts for 2019:

Students studying Year 11 and 12 English next year have received their text list. Students are expected to read their texts over the

summer vacation. If pre-orders are made students will receive their texts in time for the step up program.

Defying The Drift:

Olivia Henzen spent the first week of the holidays at Longerenong College participating in the Rotary sponsored program Defying The

Drift. This residential program provided Olivia with the opportunity to meet with other students who are interested in agriculture

related career paths. She heard from a range of guest speakers, participated in workshops and tours showcasing different fields of

agriculture. Later this term she will speak to the Rotary Club of Camperdown about this wonderful experience.

Celebration Assembly Awards:

Our Celebration Assembly was conducted on the last day of Term 3. Ethan and Lauren led the assembly in one of their final roles as

School Captains. Camperdown College Alumni Fraser Lucas, former school captain and current assistant coach of Camperdown

Senior Football Team attended and much to the surprise of Kane Leishman, presented him with a Camperdown Magpies cap and

jumper. Kane, a very keen Magpie supporter, was delighted and his excitement was infectious and equally shared by the students and

staff.

Welcome back! We have had a wonderful start to the term, with lots of relaxed, happy students arriving at

school ready to learn and play. It is always great to have a break from the routine of getting to school on time

and packing lunches etc, and we are ready for a very busy and action packed Term 4. Our Prep – Year 2

students will be participating in the infant swimming program later in the term, our Year 3/4 students head off

to Camp Kangaroobie on Monday and our Year 5/6 students have the opportunity to take part in the Super 8’s

Cricket round robin next Friday; just to mention a few. All activities for the term are published in the newsletter

and on the Compass calendar to assist everyone with forward planning.

Special Achievement:

Over the school holidays, Year 5 student Stella Horspole represented Camperdown College at the Australian

National Interschool Championships. Stella and her companion Brandy Hollow Candyman came runner up (only one point behind the

National Champion in the primary section) before making it into the top four best team riders and winning for Victoria. On behalf of

the Camperdown College community I would like to congratulate Stella on this amazing achievement; we are all very proud of you!

Students of the Term: Tomorrow, Ms Kilpatrick and I will be privileged to share in a special lunch with students who strived for excellence, in various

aspects of school life during Term 3. Congratulations to the following students on their dedication and commitment to their learning:

Vogue Fleming, Sienna Anderson, Amber Wallis, Mason Narik, Abey McLachlan, Ishmael Rothman, Tulin Meric, Amber Clissold

and Finn Tolland.

Junior Campus Concert:

WOW! What a wonderful way to celebrate the end of term under the bright lights for our annual Junior

Campus Concert. Parents, grandparents and friends enjoyed a creative display as our junior students

smiled, danced, sang and acted their way through the evening. Our students dazzled the large audience

displaying an amazing depth of talent performing on the big stage with great confidence. Although

unintentional, a continuous theme echoed through the evening about taking care of yourself and others,

the importance of a growth mindset and Dream Big because we are all incredible!

School Hats:

A reminder that all students need to wear their school hats when outdoors. Hats are available from the Junior Campus Office; bucket

hats $10 and broad brimmed $9. Please ensure hats are clearly labelled with your child’s name. We remind you that we really want

our students to wear their uniform with pride and to demonstrate that they can follow a reasonable expectation of wearing the correct

uniform and I ask for parental assistance with this.

Inaugural Spelling Bee:

Students from Year 4 – 6 competed in the Camperdown College inaugural school

Spelling Bee, as part of the Western District Spelling Competition. Each year level

participated in a class spelling test with the top three boys and girls participating in

the final spell-off. Congratulations to Tulin Meric, Ishmael Rothman, Lily Van Es,

Harrison Smith, Aaron Hemingway and Charli Hewish who were named as top

spellers in their year level. These students will represent Camperdown College at the

Western District Spelling Competition at Warrnambool Primary School tonight.

Best wishes to all!

Sporting Schools Program:

Our Sporting Schools program will commence next Thursday 25th October. Coordinator, Sally Sutterby, has organised for students to

participate in a basketball program for Term 4. Senior Campus students; Bernadette Bellman, Ben Walters and Charlie Conheady will

assist Sally each week with the program. The Sporting Schools program is extremely popular and unfortunately our list of

participating students is at capacity and we already have many names on a waiting list. Please remember that it is an expectation that

participating students attend each week, unless they are absent from school.

Year 3/4 Camp:

We wish Year 3/4 students and staff plenty of fun as they travel to Camp Kangaroobie at Princetown on Monday for their camp. They

have plenty of fun activities planned, including bush walking, rafting, ropes course, hut building and night disco. Students must be at

school at 8.50am, ready to depart the Junior Campus by 9.15am. Students return to school on Wednesday by 3pm in time for school

buses. We look forward to hearing about their adventures.

Walk to School:

Our first Walk to School commences next Wednesday and all students are encouraged to walk, ride or scoot to and from school. All

students and parents are invited to meet staff at the Old Courthouse at 8.30am and walk to school together. Walk to School

encourages primary school students to walk to and from school every school day, to highlight the ways walking improves health and

wellbeing. By getting involved in Walk to School, Camperdown College can help students learn healthy habits, and achieve the 60

minutes of physical activity recommended for children each day. It would be fantastic to see as many students as possible getting

involved.

Supervision:

A reminder to parents that students are supervised in the yard from 8.35am before school and 3.15pm – 3.30pm at the end of each

day. Any students remaining in the yard after this time will be asked to come inside and wait to be collected from the Junior Campus

Office.

World of Maths landed at Camperdown College this week and Prep – Year 6 students experienced a world of challenging problem solving as they worked in groups to tackle a variety of hands on activities. The activities were grounded in authentic contexts such as music, farming, building and transport and covered a wide range of maths concepts including angles, symmetry, measurement, data and logic. Each group of two or three classes had one hour to explore the activities in small groups and many students requested more time. We know a program is a success when we have our students wishing for more time doing maths!

Michelle Norton, Numeracy Coordinator

Junior School Council organised and held a

Footy Colours Day to conclude Term 3.

Students were invited to dress up in their footy

colours and enjoy a hot dog for lunch. The

Year 6 students played in the annual Staff vs

Students Footy Match and as expected, history

repeated itself and the staff won!

Most students ordered a hot dog for lunch with

a fruit box and majority of students enjoyed

sauce with them. Thank you to Sheree

Horspole and Paula Regan who made sure that

our hot dogs were cooked to perfection.

We raised just over $600.00 which was a

fantastic effort. This money will be put

towards the new Sensory Play Area at the

Junior Campus. The JSC would like to thank

everyone who participated on the day and

helped to make it such a successful fundraiser.

Mathematics Challenge for Young Australians

The Mathematics Challenge for Young Australians is a national

competition conducted each year for students in Year 3 – 10 by the

Australian Mathematics Trust. Aims of the challenge include encouraging

and fostering a greater interest in an awareness of the power of

Mathematics, a desire to succeed in solving interesting mathematics

problems and the discovery of the joy of solving problems in

mathematics. Congratulations to the following students

During Science this term, Prep – Year 6 students

will be looking at how things move. If you have an

old toy that rolls, slides or jumps and would like to

find it a new home, the Junior Campus would

gratefully accept it! Also if you have anything with

wheels, even if it is broken or just an odd wheel

that turns up in the washing, we would appreciate

it.

Year 8 Geography Fieldwork

Last term, a group of budding geographers spent time in the

main street of Camperdown surveying consumers and retailers

alike about sustainability practices on a local scale. The students

should be congratulated for their efforts and bravery as they

approached people on the street and in various shops asking

questions specifically relating to the use of single use plastics.

The results will be collated and analysed to help answer the

question Is Camperdown’s use of plastic bags sustainable? The

group would like to thank members of the community and the

business’ surveyed for their time and their willingness to reflect

on these issues.
