CAMPERDOWN COLLEGE NEWSLETTER Term 2, Week 4, 8th May 2020
Camperdown
One of the greatest challenges during these times has been
learning how to be hands on whilst teaching remotely. Hands
On Learning staff Warren Attrill and Donna Scott have
created ways to overcome this to benefit our students. A small
bag of tools, a sheet of board and a recipe in a jar were
delivered to HOL students at home on Monday last week, in
preparation for class on Wednesday. Students spent their
HOL day building shelves to store tools in the shed along with
a laptop stand to make working on a laptop at home more
ergonomic. Students have embraced these challenges
extremely well and we cannot wait to see the finished
products in the near future.

Our Mission: Camperdown College will provide exemplary teaching and learning programs within excellent facilities which foster school pride,
aspiration and persistence to achieve high levels of learning for all students.
From the Principal’s Desk…
With week 4 of remote learning coming
to an end, it is highly evident that our
school community is bringing an
enormous amount of consideration,
determination, patience and goodwill to
the educational challenges that have
accompanied this global pandemic. All
of our lives have changed; the things
that are now our ‘everyday matters’
were hitherto un-thought of, while the
things that were once so heavily entrenched in our daily work
and personal lives have disappeared, either mourned or
unnoticed! While the challenges and pressures have been
considerable, a pattern is emerging of students, staff and
parents surprising themselves (and others!) with newly
discovered skills and personal strengths.
In the principal role it has always been an honour to welcome
students and families through the school gates and into our
inclusive school community. With stringent safety controls
now in place across Victoria to protect public health, my
position and perspective have had to change. Never had I
imagined a set of circumstances that would require our school
mantra to change from ‘It’s not okay to be away’ to ‘It is not
only okay to be away, but you must stay away if you can.’ With
the exception of students who meet the Victorian
Government’s strict eligibility criteria for attending school in
person during Term 2, I have been unable to accept parental
requests for children to be supervised on-site. Instead, our
teachers and support staff are working closely with students
and parents to tackle challenges together, alleviate pressure and
remove barriers to learning from home. I am aware that parents
are going to extraordinary lengths to support their children and
manage family and work commitments during this time, and
that school staff are working extremely hard to make this work.
I am grateful for your understanding and consideration of the
broader community health issues at play.
Feedback from our teachers paints an overwhelming picture of
students maintaining their dedication to their goals and studies,
and being resourceful, independent and resilient remote
learners. This is evident from Prep right through to Year 12.
Some students are of course missing the stimulation and
support of a busy school environment, while others are
enjoying the increased independence and self-pacing.
The small groups of students needing to be on-site are
undertaking the same learning program that their classmates
are undertaking at home, with an allocated supervising teacher.
Junior and Senior Campus teachers and support staff are
contributing to this Junior Campus supervision roster and on-
site students and their families are required to use the same
Compass processes to communicate with their regular teachers.
The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority last week
completed the task of revising Year 12 study designs to reflect
the interruption to regular teaching and learning programs. A
small amount of content has been removed from the second
semester units and the end of year exams have been pushed
back to December. Meanwhile, we are very proud of our VCE
students who have remained engaged and diligent in their
application to their studies. They are receiving strong support
from their teachers, who have rapidly and resourcefully
expanded their repertoire of teaching methods to adapt to
changed circumstances. It has never been more evident that
teachers are learners too. Students are also being resourceful
in remaining connected to, and supportive of, each other while
learning off-site.
Our Prep and Year 7 transition program and associated school
promotions will be altered to reflect our current conditions.
Enrolment enquiries for 2021 are welcome and prospective
families are encouraged to ring and speak to myself or the
relevant Assistant Principal: Vicki Angus for Senior Campus
enquiries and Jacinta Tolland for Junior Campus enquiries.
Please alert friends and family to this opportunity.
The extent to which our students and families model our
school values was brought home to me on Tuesday this week
when our Year 7 and 10 students earned the praise of the
Corangamite Shire Secondary School Immunisation Program
staff. In spite of the logistical challenge, our students and
families did a wonderful job of participating in the program,
social isolation style! I am always very proud to hear feedback
such as this, with our students’ manners noted and
appreciated.
I hope you have all had the opportunity to enjoy our Year 3/4
teacher Lewis Oborne’s beautiful rendition of ‘Memories’,
written and performed for his hard-working students and
parents. You can sing along to his song via our website or
Skoolbag app, the Camperdown College Alumni, Parents &
Friends or GSWC Network of Government Schools Facebook
pages or via https://fuse.education.vic.gov.au/?JBS52W.
This Sunday gives us an opportunity to pay tribute to the
wonderful efforts of our mothers who are presently taking
multi-tasking to a whole new level. I hope you enjoy this
picture of a pea-hen with her tiny baby, taken around
Christmas time. The little head poking out from beneath her
feathers belongs to the same little peacock featured in last
fortnight’s newsletter. From little things, big things grow –
Happy Mother’s Day!

This time in isolation has provided the opportunity for people’s creative talents to shine. I am sure you have all
enjoyed listening to some of the parodies that have been written and performed to well-known songs (even Mr
Oborne has one to add to the list), watched in awe as creative garden adornments have appeared in neighbouring
gardens and listened to friends and family about projects that they have undertaken.
Our students’ creative talents have come to the fore as they have mastered remote
learning. They have found ways to create an environment to suit their learning needs
(even if it is from their bed), juggled the timetable to best suit their learning,
communicated with friends in the background whilst classes are running and offered
support for each other. Pictured right: Ally Collins working from home.
I am both amazed and proud of how well the students have adapted to this new learning. Although we might
be separated by distance, a click of a button brings us together. It has been wonderful to see students take their
learning seriously and meet their online commitments through WebEx (online meeting space). I have managed
to ‘drop into’ some classes over the past fortnight and it is refreshing to see the teacher/student relationships at
work.
Learning by doing is our motto and we as a staff have been doing just as much as the students. You will notice that we are getting more
proficient at finding the right ways to engage with the students. Voice recordings have been added this week and feedback from students
has been most positive. May I take this opportunity to thank all parents who are doing their very best to assist our efforts; we value your
support.
Vicki Angus, Senior Campus Assistant Principal
Remote Learning:
Once again, thank you so very much to all families for the wonderful work you are all doing in facilitating remote
learning. As I mentioned last fortnight, you are all doing such a wonderful job and we are so proud of the way
students and families are showing engagement, persistence and excellence each and every day. Keep up the
wonderful work and again a very big thank you to all families. You are all superstars!
Mother’s Day:
Mother’s Day is fast approaching and we would like to say a big thank you to all of
the mums of our school for the support and love you offer your child/ren and our
school community as a whole. This is usually a special time onsite where we show our
appreciation to all mums in a variety of ways. This year, to show our appreciation to
all of our mums during this time of remote leaning, a pack of craft materials was posted
to homes this week to enable students to create something special for their mum. We hope all of our students
enjoy cutting, pasting and creating something special for their mum, or special person in their house in the
lead up to this Sunday (just like Reagan Webb, pictured right). And secondly, we hope all mums enjoy and
cherish the creations constructed. Happy Mother’s Day to all mums!
Do It for Dolly Day:
Last term, we were treated to a talk and performance by Tom Curtain as part of his We’re Still Here tour. He performed a song titled
Speak Up that had a very important message about always being kind. We all enjoyed singing this song along with Tom and helping
spread his message. This message, of always being kind, is also a message that Dolly’s Dream hopes to spread like confetti throughout
Australia, and Tom talked to us a little about Dolly when he visited Camperdown College.
Today is Do It for Dolly Day. As a school, we marked this day with acts of kindness and by reminding our whole school community
how important it is to be kind to everyone. Doing something kind can brighten someone’s day. We encouraged our students, both onsite
and learning remotely, to take a moment to be kind to someone by performing a random act of kindness. We are sure there were many
calls made to someone to say hi, cards made to brighten someone’s day and chores completed today. Many students also chose to dress
in the colour blue today which was Dolly’s favourite colour. Please see some words put together by our school captains on page 6 of
the newsletter regarding what kindness means to them.
On the weekend, families are encouraged to walk past our front gates and see the kindness display our school has put together today to
remind everyone of the importance of being kind. Thank you to all families and students that decorated a blue butterfly for our school
display.
Sporting Equipment:
Mr Attrill has been very busy putting together some sport packs for families who may not have balls or basic sports equipment available
to them during this time of remote learning. If you would like to borrow a sports pack for this term to use at home to facilitate active
play and movement each and every day, please contact myself at the Junior Campus and we will organise a sports pack to be delivered
to your home next week.
Lego Challenge for Families:
Each fortnight, I will be challenging avid Lego users in our Junior Campus Lego Masters Challenge. The hit show currently on
television, continues to be part of many families’ routines and something that many students look forward to watching. I am sure many
household floors, like mine, are adorned with Lego and masterpieces that are looked at with pride by the children that have constructed
them.

This fortnight I challenge families to build the most magnificent treehouse they
can imagine. It can be inspired by a story you have read, a design you have seen or something you have conjured up in your own
imagination! Once your design has been completed, please photograph your masterpiece and send it through to me using the feedback
function on Compass within the Learning Task: Junior Campus Lego Masters Challenge. I will be awarding a challenge winner in
the next newsletter.
Remember mums and dads, this is a family challenge, so please remember to let your child do some of the building!

In these unprecedented times we’re all being asked to change the way we work and
live. Our tradition of putting books into the hands of kids isn’t going to change, but
for Term 2, we're doing things a little differently.

From our student Leaders
Dolly’s Dream on Friday 8th May is about spreading kindness and
not being mean or hurting other people’s feelings. It is about
joining as a community and taking a stand against bullying.
Kindness is shown in our world every day. It is as simple as
sharing or as big as standing up for each other. I encourage you to
participate in this day by wearing Dolly’s favourite colour, blue.
Be kind to each other. Stand up for each other and support each
other.
Oliver Clark, Junior School Captain
Dear Camperdown College staff, family and friends,
We know that this is a challenging and strange time, but we are
getting through this together. This is definitely not the way that we
thought our last year of high school would go; without the familiar
faces of our classmates, teachers and friends every day. Without a
doubt, Term 2 has been different, and at times difficult, but the hard
work of our school – in providing laptops and classrooms to students
who need them most – has made it possible.
We need to continue to band together to help one another through
our struggles, encourage students when they can’t find motivation
and be kind to parents who are trying their hardest to support our
learning. Although these times are tough, they will not last forever,
and have even given us the opportunity to appreciate more what our
teachers do for us each and every day.
So to all of you: our Principal and Assistant Principals; our Year
Level Coordinators and classroom teachers; our dedicated support
staff, office staff and welfare team, as well as all students from Prep
to Year 12, thank you! Thank you for what you have done so far;
the effort, care and innovation you are demonstrating, and please
continue to make our school a great place.
Your School Captains, Taylah Best and Charlie Tickner

‘My Life in Isolation’ & ’Stories for Strange Times’
Have you ever heard people talk about a memorable time in their life? Perhaps they can recall a particular event in history and
remember where they were and what they were doing at that time? Have you realised that you are currently making history?
For the first time ever we are all living in relative isolation and attending school remotely! This is a unique time in history and is a
period of time that people will remember and talk about for many years to come. Indeed, it will probably be something you will be
able to tell your grandchildren about!
To mark this strange and unusual period in our lives, all Camperdown College students are strongly encouraged to submit a piece of
writing which will be collated into an anthology of Camperdown College students’ work and published in hard copy (a book!) and
online. You have two options for your piece of writing:
Option 1: ‘My Life in Isolation’ In this piece you can share your experience of this time and how you have felt about it all. It will be a factual recount, reflecting the
events in your own life.
Or
Option 2: ‘Stories for Strange Times’ With this option you will write a short story inspired by and related to the title ‘Stories for Strange Times’. Your story will need to
relate and connect to this current period of self-isolation and remote learning.
With either writing option you may also choose to include one relevant photograph or drawing with your writing.
Submission of your writing:
If Mr Bennett is currently one of your teachers, you should be able to access a Learning Task through Compass entitled ‘Camperdown
College ‘My Life in Isolation’/’Stories for Strange Times’’, and you will be able to upload and submit your writing in this way.
If Mr Bennett is not currently one of your teachers, please email your writing to the College email at:
[email protected] with ‘Attention Mr Bennett’ in the subject line.
Please ensure that you have carefully proofread and edited your writing before you submit it.
Completed pieces of writing should be submitted by Monday 1st June.
Any questions you may have regarding this opportunity can be sent to Mr Bennett via either the Conversation Tab in the Camperdown
College ‘My Life in Isolation’/’Stories for Strange Times’ Learning Task or via the College’s email address (above).

rather a fun way for families to spend some time outside and have
fun in the garden.
All the details can be found on Compass under the Learning Task
tab. Click on the Learning Task tab and find the learning cycle titled:
'Gardening Gurus Challenges - One'. All of the details and
information you will need to participate in this challenge are listed
